Apparently, they operate almost entirely via text, which seems to be a post-COVID communication adaptation. I explained the situation via text with "Taylor"--though to this day, I'm still not sure if Taylor is a real person or just the automotive equivalent of Siri. I let him know we were only in town for a short time and asked if they could get us in ASAP. The response was quick and honest: "We don't do ASAP." Fair enough. That said, they did manage to get the vehicle in within 24 hours, which all things considered, was pretty ASAP. Unfortunately, the part we needed wasn't available through their usual sources. Fortunately, we sourced it ourselves through our dealer and had it overnighted. When it comes to car repairs, the old saying goes: You can have it good, cheap, or fast--pick two. Somehow, Taylor and the Hoffman's team managed to deliver all three. They got us in as fast as realistically possible, the work was solid (as evidenced by the fact that I'm typing this 1,000 miles later, well on our way back to Reno, NV), and the final bill came in nearly 15% under the original quote. That's a rare trifecta. Dealing with Hoffman's does come with a few quirks, but in the end, they're a small price to pay for honest, competent work--especially when you're far from home and just trying to get back on the road.

The problem was a bit of a mystery, after Ray had tried all the basic stuff (fuel pump, relays, etc) and took a lot of work to resolve. Ray showed up very quickly, brought parts, tried some stuff, bought a few more parts, tried a few more things and... after some more parts-buying and stuff-trying (keeping us in the loop the entire time about why he was doing this or that thing and giving us the option to not keep going) he was able to fix the problem, explain what he fixed in simple terms, and give us "things to look out for" as my partner drove home. He made it home with no issues! Ray's prices were super reasonable considering he was doing the work on a Sunday afternoon in the road in front of my house. He was tenacious about getting to the bottom of things and his knowledge of cars is encyclopedic. I've seen Jerry's posting on line, at town hall meetings and the man reeks of common sense. Needless to say he's consistent too. On my first visit he fixed something my FORMER mechanic wouldn't even address. He could have at least said, he it's too complicated to fix. Jerry replaced my manifold, showed all the parts he had to replace went over my vehicle and also mentioned my sensor for the abs brakes was making sounds and movement, a sensor is going wonky, I'd forgotten about that. How nice is it when somebody cares about their work, what a complete treat. We are getting both vehicles up to speed for the winter, he's a complete pleasure to work with,. Reasonable, fair, competent and cares about his work, does it get any better? When I first spoke with him, he mentioned he has more work than he can take care of, I can understand why.
