The lifeguards are too young and uneducated and disrespectful and I do not trust my children with them. As a Y member in Minnesota, I visited the Central Y in Spokane in Aug. 2024. I was led to believe that 2 visits was very possible. However, when I showed up for the second visit, I was told I was not welcome and that prior information I was given was wrong. The staff at the YMCA had my cell phone number recorded in at least 3 places but NO ONE called me in the 48 hours between my visits to tell me that they had changed their mind and I was not welcome. I walked/ran there from my hotel only to be turned away. I believe this Y branch failed to hold to the 4 pillars of the Y: responsibility, caring, honesty, and respect. While the facilities/machines are reasonably good, the communication is very poor. I do not recommend this facility. read more

So tired of driving into the Central Spokane YMCA to find the pool, the hot tub and steam room closed! The steam room's been closed for seems like a year. The pool has been closed for 2 weeks, a pump needs replaced, they don't even know if it's been ordered, yet. Drive in this morning 10:45am (45 minutes after they open on Sundays) and the hot tub is closed, due to chlorine in-balance. Lifeguard says that they don't know if the engineer is going to come in today. I drive in from deep West Spokane, not worth my time and gas to play Russian Roulette on what's open for use, not to mention the money we pay per month, then to walk into the pool area and 75% of all the activities are closed. You'd think one person might open the YMCA an hour early, and be sure the chlorine and pumps would be working properly, before normal opening hours. DONE! Canceled our membership, today! read more

Poorly run YMCA. Very unresponsive to customer requests and attempts to make changes to our membership and account. Upon deciding to cancel our membership, the Central Spokane YMCA would not cancel the membership or respond to repeated submissions of the online membership change form. Despite reaching out via email and leaving numerous voicemails in addition to the online membership change form requests, we did not get a response or any action on cancelling our membership. In two weeks of trying multiple times, I only reached a live person on the phone twice and each person said to submit and resubmit the online membership change form (and that they couldn't do anything). This simply created an endless loop of submitting and resubmitting the online membership change form and then calling to have people say the account was still active and they couldn't do anything about it .... then reverting to "try submitting the online form again..." It is hard to say it it is simply poor systems and/or incompetence, or outright fraudulent intent to keep charging your bank or card once they have it. Regardless, in the end, that was the main experience as a customer - i.e., dealing with a fruadulent business/organization. I had to report the charges as fraudulent to my bank to end the charges since the YMCA wouldn't respond. Unfortunately, as of this writing, the account remains active/open despite all of my best efforts to close it. I have to continue "freezing" the charges or submitting them as fraudulent. I now just keep screenshots of my cancellation submissions and copies of all the emails I've sent. Shameful. read more

I love the YMCA. I have one close to my house in the Valley. And I have one close to my work downtown. So I never have an excuse to not exercise. I haven't really used this one as much as the Valley one, but I have never had to wait for a treadmill. So that's a bonus. The Valley one seems to get packed and I often have to wait 5 minutes or so for a machine. One annoying this about this one though (even though it *is* good for the planet and all) is that the showers automatically turn off after like 20 seconds. So if you want to get REALLY clean, you have to turn the shower on about a dozen times. I get it ... but I would prefer to dictate my own water consumption! Anyhow, kudos to the YMCA for offering a cheap and very accessible gym with lots of classes and machines to choose from. I love the YMCA. I had a membership for almost two years before taking a hiatus due to kids (difficult to wrangle multiple toddlers out into the world) but I just signed up again and am so glad I did. The Central Y is a great facility. It's always clean, the staff are welcoming and I love that they have towel service. Their childwatch services are the best in town. No TV in sight (thank heavens) and plenty of staff members who are dedicated to caring for your kids in a loving and engaged manner. When I returned with my 2.5 year old after a year break some of the childcare team still recognized her! One of the biggest perks of the Y is that it's so much more than just gym equipment. The pool and play structure are wonderful in the winter months when it's too nasty outside to go to the park. Their class schedule is FABULOUS. There is something for every one. I am currently in love with the Barre classes they just introduced this fall. Support this quality organization and burn calories at the same time. It's a win-win for every one! read more

As a veteran member, I feel like I am qualified to comment on Dee Y.'s review, ranking the central YMCA as sub-standard -- Claim 1: Downtown YMCA lacks quality and sanitary environment for a healthy work out: No it doesn't. There are multiple, easily-spotted stations throughout EACH workout area equipped with hand sanitizer dispensers, disinfectant/anti-fungal spray and paper towels for wiping down machines. All that to say: there is one near the grouping of cardio machines, one by each grouping of weight machines, one by the free weights, and each studio has a station. I've never found one empty. Or low, for that matter. Claim 2: First of all, just to get to the building you have to enter through a toll parking lot because it is inside a park: No. The lot is protected, and you DO have to take a ticket and pass through a gate to enter the lot because it's adjacent to the Spokane Arena (where parking is not free, and as a result, event parking is frequently monopolizing street parking in the immediate area. The YMCA facility is not inside a park. It is three full blocks south of Riverfront Park, further separated by the river. Parking is free for members. There is 2 hour time limit for free parking, but I have never actually been asked to pay. Claim 3: Once you get to the YMCA parking lot you'll find it very difficult to find a spot. I visited during the weekday and it was still full because there are less than 20 spots.: FALSE: I actually looked at the parking lot on Google maps and counted 94 spots. I am here EVERY DAY by 5:30, and have had minimal trouble finding parking. Usually when I show up after a class has started. There is a rush at that hour, and you have to time it carefully to snag a spot. The closer to 5:30, the easier it is. There is also additional free parking at the Spokane Arena if you ask for a pass. It's very easy. Claim 4: Once you enter the building the stench of mildew, like Goodwill, will overwhelmingly disturb you and prevent you from enjoying the guided tour: Are we talking about the same YMCA? This facility is bright, fresh, breezy and airy. I have never experienced any such "stench" here, with the exception of entering a toilet stall too quickly after someone else. Claim 5: All the facilities are "hidden" and we were lead around the stairs and dungeon like hallways. Again, Are we talking about the same YMCA? The one with the two-story, vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows? The 50,000 sq. foot facility? (not including the 30,000 sq foot YWCA) If you look at ANY pictures of this facility, I'd challenge you to point out even ONE 'dungeon-like' hallway. Just one! Claim 6: Despite the various offerings of facilities none of them are beyond mediocre: Did you actually attend any classes? I'd be interested to find out which offerings you experienced and who the instructors were. EACH class (Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, TRX, body Pump, the list goes on.. the schedule is on the website) has several instructors to allow members to find the best style. I didn't love all the teachers, but don't fault the facility .. instead, I kept working to find a great match and ended up in classes I LOVE and the body to prove it. Claim 7: the pools are especially hard to digest. They were kind of green colors instead of Olympic-blue: ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME YMCA?!? The aquatic facility is nationally renowned for being state-of-the-art. There are FIVE options in the aquatic building: Lap pool, therapy pool, a children's play-structure with lots of fun climbing and splashing activities, a hot tub, a dry sauna and steam room. Claim 8: I can't imagine working out here on a regular basis: Evidently not, since your profile photo is a cupcake. Claim 9: initial start-up is $97 and monthly draft is $47 if you're a single adult. $104 if you're a single parent with kids, monthly is $54: Current (2013) starter fee is $108.00, and includes your first month's fee. The monthly draft is $58.00 for a single-parent family, including all children at no additional cost. Membership fees cover access to all scheduled classes AND free child watch. It bears mentioning that they also offer a sliding-scale to allow everyone equal access to the facility. The fact that fees have increased by three dollars in three years is a testament to their efforts to keep costs low. Conclusion: "There are many local gyms who offer cleaner facilities for a less fee and I'll take my biz over there." Good. You sound like a self-centered jerk. Based on previous reviews, it seems like you are always looking for the worst experience possible. I gladly pay $105 monthly, because it's the Y. I am proud to support the outreach efforts of this great organization and all they do. Evidently, you don't care to contribute to improving OUR community. We are sooooo fortunate to have 3 new Ys in Spokane. These clubs put The Spokane Club to shame. Yep, I said it. Really. Go check out the valley, Central and North Y. This is not your Grandfather's YMCA. Climbing wall, guitar lessons, recording studio... The facilities, staff, classes and reasonable monthly rates make the YMCA a clear choice. As a new mom and as a girl getting back her fitness, the Y allows me to be both. The Child Watch is awesome! The attendants are very genuine and love my 6-month-old (even if he is quite possibly the cutest one there!) They have a 10-minute cry rule but they come fetch me right away as soon as he's fussy because I exclusively nurse, which I greatly appreciate. I've had my share of gym memberships, including EWU's new one, and I can say it is great for being a YMCA. Although I'm not impressed with the free weights area as it can get cramped and offers little to no room to walk between old guys in elastic sweats and free-ranging benches. I've never had to wait for cardio machines. Ever. I've gone at all times of the day... 9:00, 1:00 pm, 8:00 pm and never remember having to wait for the texting girl to walk off the treadmill because there's always, like, 10 more. Parking isn't THAT bad. There's always somebody coming out as you're driving in. read more

After some major struggles and a not so friendly welcome to Spokane, this YMCA was the restart we needed for our trip. We walked in Saturday morning feeling pretty defeated but felt so welcomed by the two girls working at the front. We feel that they went out of their way to help us feel welcome in the Y and set us up with our day passes and towels. There was parking on site that was free if you were utilizing the facilities. While there was a great gym, we chose to spend some time in the pool area, before hitting up the showers and getting ready for a great day. The pool area features a kids' play area, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, deeper pool and four lane lap pool. Two lifeguards were on duty while we were there. Children's swim lessons were just starting in the pool so after a dip in the hot tub, we enjoyed some casual lane swimming. It was quiet in there at the time so we felt no pressure and enjoyed the facilities. Families can get ready for the pool in the four family change rooms, which are also handicap accessible. There was also both a men's and woman's change room. In the women's there were three showers, lots of lockers and counter space with nearby plugs which was perfect for getting ready and plugging in your hair blower and hair straightener. All in all, it was a clean facility that provided a great experience. Like anything though, it often comes down to the people. Seriously, I'm sorry I didn't grab the names of those girls but they made my day and I'm really grateful for them. They were great ambassadors both to the YMCA, as well as the City. read more

I. LOVE. MY. YMCA. Seriously. I have made many attempts to get in a work out routine at a gym. I succeeded at a gym maybe 25 years ago, but it was just running on a treadmill and lifting a few weights. Which was great and the Y definitely has all that! But what Iove is the group classes and the fab instructors! I mix it up with yoga (they have a few levels) and body conditioning (no impact FUN workout with weights, every class is different and fun even tho you are working hard!) and Core. Again, the instructors are so nice and mix things up so it is super fun. I'm addicted and am probably in the best shape of my life - at 54! And so many other options, two pools, a splash pad (all kinds of great options for kiddos), TRX, you name it. And they have a sliding fee scale so everyone can join! Oh and also they give lots of options for every exerciser - so I can work around my knee issues and occasional other joint problems. Yup, obviously I am a huge fan! read more

This review is coming from a single adult, so I can't really speak to the quality of opportunities for kids. Pros: - location. Very close to downtown and the lower south hill and it is really easy to get to. - newer building. The facility itself is newer and pretty well kept in my opinion. - equipment. I mostly just used the treadmills and they were all pretty good quality (better than other y's I have been to in other cities) and most had their own TV's if that's your thing. - a lap pool that was never too busy (though always a bit too warm), and a basketball court - a large selection of free classes - you can try the gym for a few days for free before deciding to join Cons: - Parking. Don't expect to find a spot in the lot if you come between 4-6 during a weekday. I often would have to park a few blocks away. - Crowded weight area. I work 7-4 and found that going after work was terrible. In the dumbbell area it was shoulder to shoulder while the benches and machines were always full. Lots of waiting. The stretching area was also really packed and if you wanted a treadmill you'd sometimes wait for that too. - Cost. I think the standard monthly fee is $50 (though it seems like most people can get done sort of discount) and the day pass is $15 which is flat out ridiculous. All in all it was a decent gym. The biggest problem is the size. Certain parts of the gym should by about 3x as big which would mitigate the busyness problem and make it more appealing for the price. read more

You spend typically 15-20 min looking for a parking spot when you could be in the gym working out. Nice facility near downtown. They have the typical assortment of work out equipment and free weights and a pool for lap swimming. A variety of work out classes are available. Locker rooms are clean with showers. There is a dry and wet sauna located by the pool. Imo the best time to go is early early... as in before 7 am. Can get overly crowded in the morning after 8 and evenings to where you have to park across the street. read more

I did a few classes here over my vacation with my sister who is a member. Two of our classes had the same instructor, Katrina and the other we didn't catch her name. First up was Cardio Express. You pack in a pretty intense workout into a thirty minute class. Katrina was warm and welcoming and the other regulars told us the deal: you can use a typical exercise step or a bosu ball to do the coordinated mix of cardio pumping moves. Let's be real. We're not that coordinated or fit but the class was a fun mix of death-defying (some of the moves were really hard to do for even thirty seconds) and energetic dancing. We both did our first class with the bosu ball and it was really fun! I really liked how this class felt progressive, that is, you had room to grow into it over months. If you couldn't do everything she asked today, great! It's a goal for next time, to do ten more seconds or five more jumping jacks. We definitely worked up a sweat. The next morning, my calves were sore from spending so much time on the balls of my feet. I like that feeling, it makes me feel like I had a good workout. The instructor did a good job encouraging us and also not being a drill sargeant and saying stuff like "if you need to just walk in place, that's okay!" We didn't feel outfoxed or like we were surrounded by tough meatheads. It was a really amiable atmosphere and I think I would have felt totally at home coming to this alone. Next day, we started with Beyond Barre and Katrina was our instructor again. She playfully checked in with us and remembered us from the day before. Beyond Barre uses a yoga mat (they have them on site to borrow) and few hand weights (you choose your weight, 2, 3, or 5 pounds). I feel like there might have been one other prop but I can't recall now. You do it barefoot. I really liked this class!! The moves all felt good, I like moves to make me feel like I'm lengthening my muscles and spine and not too fast paced like Insanity or P90X. This wasn't for old people but I definitely got a sweat going on. There were planks, ab work, squats and just a good mix of strength training moves. It wasn't like jazzercise or zumba where there are long chains of moves. You all basically hold a move at a time and then switch sides/arms. The thirty minute class went fast, but not as fast as Cardio Express. Lastly, we did a Zumba class with someone who wore a tutu and glasses and had reallllllly long hair. She had a TON of energy and enthusiasm but we were so out of our element. Of the three classes I sampled, this one felt like it required home work or pre-gaming to be ready to last. The moves were so fast, we didn't really feel like we were A. keeping up B. getting a workout or C. Blending in. Basically we laughed the whole class at ourselves and lack of coordination. It wasn't hostile by any means but yeah it wasn't really what I'd say was beginner friendly. We left early on that one, which was probably rude. My sister said when we left, I could've burned more calories doing anything else in the gym. It's kinda true, we just couldn't keep up with the moves and the fast music so you do kinda just wander and your heart rate doesn't stay up. So my #1 recommendation for this facility would be Cardio Express...I felt the burn and felt welcome and at home. I also loved Beyond Barre and could see making this part of my weekly routine for sure. The staff were nice and the facility was clean. I do have one complaint, though, checking in as a guest, there was only one person (perhaps a volunteer) at the check in desk and she was on the phone. Not her fault, but we stood for at least ten minutes waiting to get checked in. There was a line. We asked the towel clerk, is there anyone who can help us? And she just said, "No..." Oh. Okay. Cool. That was kind of a bummer. I'm in customer service and just thought that was botched. Everything else was cool though! Oh and the parking lot sucks. It's too small for how many people were there both days we went. Fun place though and I'd def join if I ever move back to Spokane. read more

Non-profit? Christian organization? YMCA just raised their day pass fee from 10$ to 20$ in an attempt to coerce people into getting a membership. They also raised the membership rates. I am not feeling the community love, as I have asked them before about a solution since I only come in twice a month for about 2 hours to play volleyball. 8 years later they not only won't accommodate, but also double the rates. I have to downgrade the downtown YMCA in this update. This morning for the second time in three weeks, I was unable to swim when they first open on Saturday mornings first thing. After getting inside the building today we were told we could not swim yet. I am thinking this has something to do with staffing people not showing up, based on a similar experience about a week prior. We have been told we can't swim unless there are 2 lifeguards. Some of us can't wait around too long for staff to show up as we have other things to do, so this is, a big inconvenience.With that said I hope they can get this issue figured out. I will be contacting Member Services on Monday about this issue. read more

I primarily use the water features for my workouts. I have gone during all times of the day and days of the week and never found the pools crowded. The hot tub, sauna, and steam room all help me wind down from a hard swim. The staff are always very friendly and accommodating, as are the patrons. I wouldn't work out anywhere else. read more

I have been a member of this gym for several years but these guys suck more and more all the time. Recently they raised their rates then a month later they closed the south parking lot then a couple weeks later they say they are changing their hours to "better align their hours with member usage" what does this mean for you? It means less hours and closed altogether on Sunday. As if these things weren't the only things to gripe about, the showers are filthy and so is the pool and the hot tub. Did you know that they NEVER change the water. I know because I asked and I asked because it is always murky. Let's hope you aren't there to swim laps anyway because there is only two lanes available for you ever, unless there are a lot of lap swimmers then there is only one. They are always using three lanes for some water exercise class and they aren't afraid to ask you to move even though you pay your dues too. Who's idea it was to put the kids water slide in the lap pool I don't know but its stupid considering that they already have two other pools dedicated to the kids. But there goes two lanes that can't be used except maybe on Sunday which no longer is an option. If I were you I would think twice about going here unless you are doing it exclusively because you have kids. Because it is basically a daycare center. read more

I have been to both the north and central y. They are gross. Gross people, gross locker rooms, gross equipment. Not to mention they are overpriced. There are nicer, cleaner and cheaper gyms in Spokane. What really sucks is they charge you more if you have a good income then they beg you for more money for donations. I have been going here for a year. It is a good deal if you're a student like me because they base it on a sliding scale income. It does get crowded and sometimes you have to park on the street but 90% of the time I have been able to find a spot. I usually go in the afternoon or evening. My only complaint is they pull from your account monthly for the membership fee and you cannot change the day when they draw from your account. It just happens to be the day before I get paid so I'm usually broke by then. All in all this is a good gym for a good price. read more

YMCA is awesome. They have a huge cardio area where I've never had to wait for equipment to a large strength training free weights room, as well as multiple studios where they hold all kinds of group training or private trying classes. Their aquatic area is incredible ... Their lap pool is 25 yards. They have a lazy river, a recreational pool, sauna and jacuzzi. They have a great gym for a variety of sports, a great family center, and a great teen center. Check out their list of classes for all ages and you'll see all they have to offer. Something for everyone! I used their free health and fitness consultation which helped me focus on my goals and how I can reach them. We held a great birthday party there for our kids and they have other rentals and meeting rooms. Our kids also attended their day care in the facility as well as the care they offer at elementary schools. All around they run an impressive organizations and offer something really wonderful for this community. read more

This is an okay gym. Has a fair amount of equipment, but at peak hours there are not enough cardio machines. The main problem with this gym, and all of the YMCA's, is the lack of ventilation. None of the cardio machines have fans, and they only have a few low powered ceilings fans. Definitely need some industrial fans or personal fans in a closed area like this. read more
