I love CSE! I just switched to them for all my eye stuff- contacts and glasses. Their selection is small but broad- they have frames for every price range, and a lot of great styles. The best thing about them though, is the service. Dr. Geoff White did a thorough exam and he really knows eyes. He and the staff I met are knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and honest. This place is absolutely horrible. I walked in on a Saturday and booked an appointment for the following Week for an eye examination. I asked them to call me first thing on Monday if they couldn't find my insurance details. That way I could chase with my insurance provider. Im making arrangements from work so that I can be at this place later in the afternoon. There was no call so Im happy that everything is sorted. Its now 4pm, and im driving to this eye care. Now I received a call from them. TheyTe saying that that cant find my insurance details. For God's sake, tell me early morning, instead of waiting until past 4pm. I had to cancel this appointment. On 11/04/14 I agreed to pay in advance for a pair of frames that needed to be special ordered. I paid $140 upfront to George. When I arrived to pick them up a week later, it turned out that the company (Legre) had discontinued the color I had ordered/prepaid for. However, George/Central Square Eye Care refused to refund my money. I was told that my only option was to find another pair in their stock. I spent weeks trying to sort this out with them (going in in person on several occasions over the last two months and even trying to find another pair of frames that fit me), but have had no luck, and am still out $140. read more

Don't believe all of the high ratings. Went to see Dr. White. Found him creepy and unprofessional. Wanted to opt out of dilating my eyes, and he asked me to leave. Very derogatory and condescending. Actually told me that it is "his office" and if I don't want to get my eyes dilated, I should leave. Unprofessional and rude. When a beloved pair of frames needed repair and my local optometrist was reluctant to work on them- I called Central Square Eye Care to see if they could help, as they are the only place in New England who carry the brand of frames I need to fix. After sending a photo of the frames, they mailed me the replacement part I needed, at NO charge. In a time when customer service is hard-to-find, I was really impressed with just how helpful George was. I have never been patient there and am not likely to become one as I live out of state, but they still treated me like I've been their customer for years. 5 Stars for Central Square Eye Care! read more

They service was good, but I realized afterwards how they screwed everything up for me. They billed me for a contact lens fitting exam that the doctor did on me without telling me that it would cost extra. Only when I saw the bills did I realize that it wasn't covered by insurance. In addition, the prescription for the glasses that I got is not as clear as the my old pair of glasses. I do not intend to come back here. read more

After calling Custom Eyes in Cambridge, LensCrafters in Brookline and some similar places in Boston, Central Square Eye Care was the only place that could book me a same-day eye exam appointment (this was a random, non-holiday Thursday in June). The location is great, the waiting room is clean and comfortable, and the waiting room personnel were friendly and accommodating. Dr. Lewis, as previously mentioned, was incredibly calming and professional. Her voice and demeanor were on par with people who lead meditation exercises. I have never had such a peaceful medical-type exam! She also took care to explain what she was doing, which I certainly appreciate when someone is going to approach my eye with strange-looking equipment and assorted eye drops. The price for a basic eye exam (glasses, no contacts) was $79 with NO eye insurance. The frames available were all really attractive, and the staff member who dealt with frames was the perfect blend of helpful but not overbearing. She explained that frames were arranged by price and brand and suggested I check out the less expensive ones first since I mentioned my lack of eye insurance. The cheapest frames I looked at were ~$150 (there may have been cheaper ones that I didn't try out) . The middle range frames were ~$250. I didn't get to the high-end section, but they were most likely over $250! Overall, I will definitely come back to this place next year given their high degree of friendliness and professionalism! read more

I've been a customer of Central Square Eye Care since they opened and have followed Dr. Lewis from her previous position at Sears Optical and George, the optician, too. That makes over 11 years of complete satisfaction with their expertise, selection and ease of ordering my glasses and contact lenses. Dr. Lewis is very professional and also very personable. She strives to make sure you have the correct prescription and that they are comfortable. George knows my taste in eye frames and can easily recommend several and which makes the selection a breeze. George is also very knowledgeable about frames and anything an optician does. Also, I moved to the Bay Area three years ago and I still see Dr. Lewis and George every year for my exam and optical needs when I am in Boston. read more

I can't vouch for the eye exams, BUT- this place has the BEST selection of designer eye frames you will find anywhere in the city, including Boston. I also find the staff to be very nice and helpful. They not only carry the common designers that everyone has, but sexy, chic European designers that you won't find at every boutique in the city. They also carry exclusive lines like Oliver Peeples and Alain Mikli. The frames arrive quickly, too. This is my most FAVORITE place to buy frames, and I am a snobby frame collector! I've been a customer at Central Square Eye Care for the last three years, ordering glasses, prescription sunglasses, and my first pair of contacts. Dr White helped me with my prescription glasses and sunglasses, while Dr Lewis helped me get contacts for the first time. Both are fantastic. You can't go wrong at this place. The front desk staff are really great, and can help you find a good pair of glasses. They're really friendly too. Second time around for these guys, and not pleased. Service was good and fast, but the lens are below horrendous. They scratch and are difficult to clean, as if they have oil on them (they dont, if you are asking). i have a very busy schedule and dont have time to pick up the pieces of faulty products, trek across the river, wait, and then get the product i paid for (and too much compared to other places). there are so many places to get eye care in boston, and its really not worth it to waste your time when both service and product are so below the mark. The lenses are of very poor quality, unless you upgrade to an even more expensive version. the first ones smudge, are virtually unable to be cleaned, and do scratch even though they say they are scratch resistant. update. i went to get my eyes checked by an actual honest, professional doctor. she said that they doubled (!) the magnification on my left eye, that i didnt need a prism, that i needed a specific type of bifocals... so mismanaged it isnt even funny. not only that two principle and MAJOR diagnoses were MISSED. lets see the dilation? thats suppose to be prolonged, meaning they put it in your eye, you hold for thirty seconds, then you wait thirty minutes. you cant just drop it in and do it, fellow. the place i went had the lenses at 100 dollars cheaper than central square eye care. the frames were HALF off where i went today.. I used to be a very loyal client, and I had my eyes examined 3~4 times by Dr. White. The first two pairs of glasses were made, when Dr. White worked at Lechmere Galleria Mall, and another 2 pairs of glasses made at Central Square Eye Care. The most recent eyeglasses service was horrible, and I will stop going there again, unless Dr. White changes. The story is that the right lens of my current prescription glasses was cut chipped and mounted on my eyeglass frame, and I did not notice the defect when I was in office, until family member told me at home. I went back to the office a few times for replacement. Each of the lens replacement was disappointing. The final resolution was to use thicker lens, not 1.69x condensed lens. I did not get any refund from using cheaper thicker lens in the replacement. Two years later, the Crizzal coating on the replacement lens peeled. I don't think Crizzal coating was actually used on the thicker replacement lens. I sent emails to ask for my the prescription information, and Dr. White refused to provide my prescription information. In the reply, Dr. White said my prescription information expired, and I must schedle an appointment for another eye examination. This is ridiculous. I paid for my eye examination, and my current prescription is still good. I don't need another eye examination. I sent multiple emails to urge for my current prescription information, and the office of Central Square Eye Care just does not respond! Dr. White is hungry for more money! Dr. White runs a bad business and service. So, stop going to Central Square Eye Care. read more

Your mother wouldn't approve of Central Square Eye Care. Why not? Let me count the ways. Mother always said: 1) If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it. A customer was in a hurry and didn't buy a pair of glasses, so the people at the front desk started talking smack about the customer after she left. Mother doesn't like smack. 2) Always do your best. I've had glasses since I was a kid, so I've had at least a dozen eye exams. This was the first time that the prescription was so bad that the glasses made my vision blurry. 3) Take responsibility for your mistakes. No big deal, right? People make mistakes. I went back to Central to fix the prescription. I'll give them credit for repeating the exam, but they refused to replace the lenses, saying that the industry doesn't work like that. Well, OK, but they made a mistake that will cost someone $100 to fix - shouldn't it be Central since they made the mistake? So now you know that Mother doesn't approve of Central Square Eye Care. Mother also wants to remind you to eat your veggies. Listen to your mother. read more

Disappointed with this place. Dr was friendly but I had some issues with my eyes tearing and all he said that they were dry and didn't give me any solutions (other than to wear sunglasses) to help the problem. I'm still having issues with them being sore and bloodshot. The main issue I had was when picking out new glasses as the man in front was very unhelpful. I had picked out a pair of glasses I was going to buy but as I was checking out the price for glasses that he had told me more than doubled. I was a bit unsure and said I would think about until I came back for my follow-up contact apt (btw I never asked for a contact fitting and only suggested that it could be a reason for why my eyes were bothering me and then I got charged extra!). Even without buying the glasses, the bill was high as my insurance wasn't taking into account until I asked them again to add it. The assistant started getting annoyed at this stage as I wasn't buying the glasses but added my insurance info in. Then I asked to schedule an apt for the additional contact fitting that was included and the contact solution that the doctor was supposed to give me and he got even more inpatient. Overall I was really disappointed in this place and decided not to return for my contact fitting even though I had already paid for it. read more

I have been Dr. Lewis patient for 10 years! That should be enough for anybody to consider going to her for their eye care needs. Dr. Lewis is sweet, informative and I always had a great exam with her. The staff there have always given me excellent service. They are very patient and informative during the whole process. Especially when it comes to picking out new glasses. Their cost of glasses vary from budget-friendly to expensive. They never push the expensive glasses , but instead let you glance and try on a few before they make suggestions. They explain everything and the cost before you purchase. I would highly recommend taking suggestions from the staff when it comes to picking out glasses, such as anti-glare, scratch resistant, etc., Yes, these suggestions cost extra, but your glasses will last longer. For a billing oversight made on their part, I was scolded for an unpaid "contacts fitting" that was already completed. A contacts fitting is a shame for people who already wear contacts. I was told one thing and they did another and now want to retroactively bill me. This place provided mediocre service at best. The Dr. maintains no level of professionalism and actually threatened me on the phone for receiving free services. I will never go here again and you should strongly consider opting for a better place that provides a higher level of customer satisfiaction. read more

I was extremely cautious when picking an optometrist b/c I had such a terrible experience the last time I got glasses. My last optical gave me a pair of glasses that made me feel nauseous and my eyes bloodshot. I was not able to make it back within the 30 day return period and so I was stuck with those glasses for two years (until my insurance covered glasses again). Two years later, after a great deal of research, I decided to set up an appointment with Central Square Eye Care. The staff was extremely welcoming and helpful. Most importantly, the doctor was very nice and thorough. I told him all about my nightmare experience with my last set of glasses. He was sympathetic and assured me that he would be very thorough in the examination. The examination took about 30 minutes and I never felt rushed. My glasses feel great and I haven't worn my contacts since I got these glasses. I was very happy with the service here at Central Square Optical. The last thing I should mention is that it was a bit expensive. I have VSP insurance and it covers a regular pair of glasses, but if you want designer glasses or extra thin/light weight lenses, then you will pay for it. My eyesight is terrible so to make the lenses thinner it cost me almost $200. In total I ended up paying about $300 with my insurance. I'm not saying don't come here, but I am saying that there may be cheaper opticals depending on what you need/want. Hope that helps. read more

I have never gotten my eyes examined here (yet), but I have been going here for high-end eyewear since 2006. The staff is very friendly & honest, and they will help you find glasses that look right on you. If you want people to stop you on the street to compliment you on your glasses, I highly recommend the Lafonts. And, if you have a tricky prescription like I do, you'll be happy to know that there is a new (thin) digital lens which helps to improve your peripheral vision. (The difference is AMAZING!! ) Some of the frames and lenses can be expensive, but I'd say even a blind person would see that this is a wise investment... :) read more

I really like the doctor here which is most important to me. They also accept my insurance (VSP) which is a must for me. The people working out front are great at helping you select frames or making adjustments as necessary. Turnaround time from ordering frames/contacts is very reasonable and generally much shorter than the time frame they quote. The selection is relatively small but they carry two brands I really like - Salt and Oliver Peoples. They've custom ordered frames for me that weren't already in the store as well. Both of those brands tend to be expensive but the prices are consistent (or sometimes even fixed by the manufacturer) across all stores from what I can tell. read more

I love Central Square Eye Care. I have terrible vision and need a strong contact lens, Dr. White is awesome and always gets psyched when we are able to get me to see better. This year it was "wow, that is the best we have done in that eye!" - which is my left eye which has astigmatism and always sees somewhat blurry. They never guilt me if I wait too long to come in, am wearing old contacts, etc. He also gave me a discount for my yearly exam this time because I am unemployed. Super nice! Dr White is excellent. I was very happy with his service and professionalism. However, I am very disappointed with the sub - par collection of frames at the store. George is the guy in-charge of the frames section. An otherwise nice guy, he is challenged by his own unprofesionalism and lack of courtesy. He ordered my frames and promised me the glasses would be ready in a week. After a week when I was at the clinic for a contact lens fit exam, he avoided me at the store. Dr White told me the frames were in transit and George would call me as soon as they arrive. George never called me even after 4 weeks. When I called the clinic myself, he once again avoided me and had the lovely receptionist lie for him. Apparently, George got her to tell me he left me a msg a week ago saying the manufacturers suddenly decided to discontinue those very models, blah! read more

I went there got my eye exam for the first time. The eye exam went well but when I want to pick out glasses , I asked the receptionist what kind I could have( which it that my Insurance paid for- I thought). She shown me a few that I liked but didn't tell me what option that I have- Finally, she help me pick one out that She thought it looks best for me, then She bent the fram to fit my face(that was just the one from the show case,it doesn't have the lens that I ordered).Then She told me that I need to pay a balance of 149.00 Dollars after insurance & Co-pay. I went home& asked my husband- did he had to pay for his as much as mine, he said that his insurance paid for his glasses, he paid co- pay only.So I try to call the Receptionist lady the next morning ASAP when the place open at 10 Am.I want to negotiate for difference glasses but she refused to change the order, said that the order already had been processed. We called our Insurance & check with them& also asked them for help. After the Insurance spoke to the Lady, They advised us not to go there, because they caught the Lady lie, ignoring & be difficult to us. They cancelled the Order in my favorite but they couldn't help me with the charge on my credit card. I have to dispute to the credit card Co. my self & I did it. It's ridiculous to get charge for the frame that they tried to fit it to your face before the Len 's inserted or the Len 's not even made yet. Or the Order 's not even processed. read more

I went for an eye exam because I was getting headaches. Dr. White record 20/20 for my vision in the computer. When asked about the clarity of my eyes, I was told it was a minor off set but still need glasses. I did not make a fuss since my family comes to this office. When I went pick out glasses, I was push to the most expense racks. When I moved back for to the frames of lesser price because I liked a style, I was almost escorted back to the premium prices. I was told that my insurance would cover them. Turns out I have perfect eye site. And the headaches are caused by something else. This place is all about the money. Dr. White is really good at his job. You can tell that he's super knowledgeable and knows eye care. He did a great job with my fitting and eye exam. He was honest and blunt, which I appreciate in a doctor. I feel very confident that my prescription is correct. And he didn't give me a lecture about buying my old glasses online (so much cheaper!), which I really appreciate. However, he isn't the most friendly guy out there. And he definitely isn't a hand-holder kind of doctor. I don't think abrasive is the right word, but he'll definitely tell you if you're wrong (which is fair). He's also not interested in small talk, which can be a plus if you're not into that either. He did say that if I left a message on the office phones that he would likely call back immediately (he gets the office messages on his personal cell phone) even if it was after hours, which I definitely appreciate. So excellent customer service in that respect. Also the front desk was super helpful in helping me understand my insurance and my benefits. I also got an appointment within a week of calling, and you can't beat the central square location. In short: Dr. White is very knowledgable and great at what he does, but not a friendly/chatty guy. But really, would you rather have a doctor who knows his stuff or a chatty/useless doctor? Edit: I have put some thought into it, and I think that I will take my business elsewhere. I prefer a doctor who has a little bit better bedside manner, but if that isn't a make it or break it thing for you, I still recommend it as a solid place to go. read more

Bad experience, won't go there again. I had an eye exam plus contact lens fitting exam. The first day I had to wait for about 30 mins while the receptionist sorted out the insurance details. She gave me wrong information about what the insurance covers and what it doesn't. The eye exam itself looked rushed to me, and the contact lens fitting happened in a jiffy!! I was going to try out contact lenses for the first time and the doctor (Dr. White) didn't even tell me how to pluck them out of the eye - as a result, I was trying to snatch them out of my eye in various horrendous ways. Anyway, I gave the benefit of doubt to them as they were obviously running out of time and the receptionist could be ignorant. The next time I went there was for the follow up contact lens fitting exam. My insurance benefit covers for contact lens fitting exams. However, when I told them that I don't want to buy the lenses right away, but want to use the insurance benefit for just the lens fitting exam, they said it's going to use up all of the benefit -- which worked out to some 270$, for just lens fitting! This was confirmed both by the Doctor and the receptionist - and was wrong! I think they were trying to pressure me into buying the lenses from them, whihc were more expensive than at other places. They were pretty unpleasant and rude when I said that I want to check up with the insurance company. I'm glad that i did it in spite of it and not fall for the sham it was. Must say that my first medical appointment in US hasn't been a pleasant one! Don't know if it's usual rather than an exception. Eye exam + contact lens fitting was 160$. read more

Central Sq. Eye Care are absolutely terrific. They have a superb staff and doctors -- they set up an appointment very quickly, helped me find a nice pair, suggested a super bendable set that my toddler would not be able to snap like a twig etc. and were very reasonably priced. As an added bonus, 6 months later, I'm back in sunny CA and have lost my sunglasses but they quickly mailed me the prescription so I can get a new set. Fantastic all round. I moved to Boston fairly recently and was reluctant to find all new doctors at the same time. I went home for Christmas to get an eye exam which was completely screwed up. I didn't have time to get my glasses before I flew back to New England, so they came in the mail and were the completely wrong prescription and my contacts fit poorly. Talk about frustrating! I found CSEC because it was near my house, and the doctor was really sympathetic to my situation and kvetched with me about my old doc's mistake. Dr. Lewis was patient and thorough, and helped me choose a very comfortable lens. We went to all the chain stores and were so disappointed about the selection - in addition, the customer service was just terrible. We were so happy to come across Central Square Eye Care.
