They were very good with my anxious girl dog - they tried their absolute best to make her comfortable! She's a lab mix, 6 years old, and they showed extreme patience. She has a history of chronic ear infections and I used her same ear flush medicine I have but it didn't work this time. They asked if it would be alright with me if we sent in cultures to see which specific strand of bacteria it is and I said yes! As a nurse, I don't want random antibiotics given that guess at what the bacteria could be - this could build up antibiotic resistance when she might already be struggling with this. I liked that they gave different options and always let me know what the price would be at the end. They let me help with her care as well which helps a lot. I found everyone extremely patient and helpful! read more

Went in for an annal gland expression for my dog and got overcharged for $100+. Then I was informed I was booked for a doctor even when i called they say a nurse will express it. The whole appointment lasted 15 mins and this is really bad that they charge so much for it. I would not recommend this place. read more

We have been using this clinic for over 4 years. We mostly needed minor things for our Cat. He was getting up in age and we noticed his life changing for the worst fairly quickly. The care we received from everyone at the business was exceptional. You can tell the love what they do and also your dear pet. We knew that things were not getting better for our cat but had a trip planned to be in Florida last weekend. Our Son stayed home with our sick cat and had to bring him in for some help and advice. This is always a tough time for families. I must admit they are caring and very sensitive to the situation. They helped us till we lost him and also after with our final plans. Can't recommend them enough! We are so so grateful for them! A few months ago, we had to let go of our golden retriever. We had an at home vet scheduled for euthanasia for a Tuesday, but that Sunday she really went downhill and we had to do it THAT day. Central Texas animal hospital took us in instantly, and were SO compassionate. Then today, unfortunately, we had an unexpected emergency with our chihuahua. She randomly couldn't use her back legs, and was making terrible "I'm in pain" noises. With her in the car, I called 3 different vets explaining the situation, but they said they couldn't help. As we were headed to the ER, we decided to pull into central Texas animal hospital since we were close. Once they heard emergency, they dropped everything and took us back. Everyone was beyond amazing. Although the outcome was unfortunately a bad one, the experience couldn't have been any better for the situation. They will now become our primary vet. Do not take your pets here, they're using dangerous, recalled vaccines. Took my cat in for a routine round of vaccinations, as I've done with all three of my pets, I could hear her making low meowing sounds in her carrier on the way home. When I let her out she starts violently seizing writhing and screaming. Took her back, she was sedated until they closed (an hour before their posted time). Coming back to collect the cat I was shocked to see that they were charging me for the sedation for the seizure they caused with their basement brewed inoculations. This is a former street cat who gave birth in an abandoned garage and watched all her babies killed by hawks. This vet spayed her, no problems. They tried to say it was "stress" causing the seizures. Bullshit. They know what they're doing. "So you're going to lose 3 patients because you refuse to take responsibility for the harm you caused?" They literally walked out of the room without answering. Go to a reputable vet, there's a reason this place is the lowest rated. Nobody here cares, it's the equivalent of the clinic at a veterinary school without the passion or oversight. read more

A rescue pup found me and my friends recommended the hospital here and my friends were spot on correct. My rescue pup had many of the common intestinal issues that just needed meds to remove. I also got him fixed here and a regular check up scheduled. The staff here is very friendly animal lovers and all of their recommendations helped more than any place else I went to. My pup is healthier and better now after getting treated here. I understand people are passionate and sensitive about their animals, but Dr. Hill has shown nothing but correct treatments for my pup and care with concern. I read other negative comments but this has been my personal experience and it has been great. read more

During an already very difficult time working as hard as possible to make the end of our senior, disabled dog's life as joyful as possible, we were shamed by the vet (who only met our dog once) when trying to access anxiety medication. Without knowing his day-to-day life, she denied us the medication and said that if a dog needs anxiety/pain medication like our dog does, are we really making the kind decision by keeping him alive? While we're already in the heartbreaking place of knowing we'll be saying goodbye to him soon but also seeing him enjoy his walks and naps and fetch and playtime, this insinuation that we are selfishly keeping him alive while he suffers was the last thing we needed. After all these hours of lovingly taking care of him, I walked away from this vet feeling completely judged and ashamed of myself even though I know we are doing what's right by him. Update: I called to discuss the situation and provide my feedback, and they said that no one by the name of Cristian works there. read more

We switched to Central Texas from White Rock a few months ago, and are very happy so far. They are much more reasonably priced, and we feel like their level of care and concern for our pet is higher. They spend more time during examinations and aren't constantly trying to up-sell you. More importantly, we trust Central Texas with our animals' lives. Our cat went in for dental surgery today, and the doctor detected an arrhythmia in his heart before proceeding. If they hadn't of checked, our cat probably wouldn't have come out of anesthesia. The Vet took excellent care of my mom's elderly cat. (sorry, I forgot her name). I made an appt., and was able to get kitty in just a few days before the hospital unfortunately had to close to "in-person" visits (due to the Covid-19 virus). Prices I was quoted were reasonable. (I've done rescue, so have experience with at least 8 vets in Austin, RR, and now Pflug.) staff and the doc provided very good care and suggestions for kitty. I was afraid she might be developing CKD due to her age, and her not eating, but opted to go ahead and do bloodwork. I was SO glad that we did this, and they called me back just 2 hours later with her results. The vet called me personally, and explained that the results were "good" (no kidney failure). The staff was also very concerned and caring. I will definitely continue to bring Kitty to her "hometown" vet. read more

Oh my, I have to give a 5 star on Yelp so let me explain why so you are not mad at me if your opinion differs. My 14 year old dog has been going here since she was about 6 months old. Two stars for experienced doctors. Staff - two stars for exceptionally patient staff. Facility - two stars for trying to keep the place clean and modern - well - oops - I only have one star that I can use so I guess one star will have to do. That's five stars. So what else? Well I have dogs and cats that I have inherited from young folk who did not believe in spaying and neutering their pets. When a dog gets old and needs more care, a whole lot of people dump those pets into city animal shelters. Central Texas Animal Hospital is not the cheapest choice -- but its not the most expensive either. Its worth it to take my pets to Central Texas Animal Hospital so they have a doctor on record.I know that I would not have the knowledge base to keep my 14 year old dog comfortable in her last stages of life. Like other people, I take my pets to profit organizations for shots, spay, or neuter. But many shelters don't use enough anesthesia or even give pain meds after surgery. No wonder my pets returned to me so traumatized and clearly in pain. Central Texas Animal Hospital makes sure my pets are comfortable during and after surgery. Perfection - we are trained to believe that 5 star means perfection when it doesn't. Five star means that a business met specific criteria of the reviewer. If knowledgeable doctors, patient staff, and a clean modern facility is important to you, then Central Texas Animal Hospital might be the place for you. If the staff seems a bit out of sorts the day you visit, keep in mind that they have pets and have lost pets too - pets that "Cross the Rainbow Bridge." Maybe they had a traumatic case arrive right before you arrived and they are gathering their strength to keep going through the day. To me, Central Texas Animal Hospital is a hidden gem in the USA. Yep, they are that good. Now listen, you won't get high tech at Central Texas Animal Hospital but you will get good old fashioned hometown care with high tech research and experienced-based care. They can and do take care of expensive pure bred and the most beloved mixed bred dogs and cats. They have a payment option using CareCredit which I use for dental care - yep Care Credit can be used for human dental care at many local dentist offices. So what are the cons? Well, its not free. Its not a luxurious 1-star hotel for the rich and famous - but the rich and famous would be wise to choose Central Texas Animal Hospital for their beloved dog and cat friends. He is very common sense and doesn't charge the owners to death. He really cares about the financial burden on the owners and give excellent care to your fur babies without putting you into debt. Dr Hill claimed the same thing that was wrong with my pomchi was wrong with her chihuahua as well, yet I walked out spending a fortune with no diagnosis. My fur baby walked out of there worse than how he was brought in. I'm absolutely infuriated. Do not recommend at all. They do not have any compassion or concern for you animals, they're just worried about getting them out of there before closing time. One of the Vet Tech's also has the nerve to tell me the reason why my pomchi was sliding around and had no balance (the whole reason I brought him in to get checked) was because of the hair in his paws. Stay away! This place used to be the best vet clinic in the greater Austin area. Used to. Roughly three years ago they switched gears from being a customer care oriented clinic to be a business focused on selling products in house. Every time I bring one of my pets in the first thing the 'vet' (Banks, Modac, etc) will do is try to sell me a special type of food, or unnecessary test. If you refuse THEY WILL NOT TREAT YOUR ANIMAL. Also, and this is quite odd, they will take your animal away after you arrive and not give them back until after your consultation. While this is not uncommon for vet techs to do in administering fluids, vaccines, etc it is highly suspect that they now refuse to allow you to watch.. how am I to know that they even treated my pet at all?! Not to mention how stressed my animal was without me there for comfort. They no longer care for animals, they care for money. Such a shame, as I genuinely loved this place enough to bring nearly a dozen critters and spend over $10k since 1995. Modak and Banks are BAD NEWS. Stay away! read more

I have a new one year old pomeranian "spirit". He broke his leg leaping onto our coffee table 5 days after we got him. I rushed him into the vet. They were courteous and saw him immediately. The doctor had an x-ray taken and explained that he had a clean break on his ankle. The doctor recommended a specialist who quoted $3500.00. I called the doctor back asking what other options I had. He said he could not recommend any. I paid $250 for this visit. So, I called a vet referred by my assistant, great doctor in business for 30 years. Spirit got into surgery that day and it costs us $400 total. No charge for follow up taking the cast off and getting splint on ten days later. I think the doctor should have given alternatives to a $3500 specialist. I suspect a referral fee was involved. read more

I'm surprised to see such a low rating here for CTAH. I've been taking my dog here for about 8 years, and I'm extremely pleased with them. The health of my rescue dog has been "persnickety" at best. They've kept me both calm and informed every visit, and I've always left confident that my little guy is getting the best possible care. The ladies who work here are extremely friendly, and seem to really care about the animals who come here. In a perfect world it wouldn't matter, but -- they always make sure I know the cost of every option, and if it's essential for the health of my pet. I wish I could always afford the most expensive treatments, but that's not realistic. I've never been pushed to purchase anything unnecessary. I've actually moved two cities away, and still make the drive here for my vet needs. They're worth it. read more

This review is primarily for Dr. Sherry Hill, but I also want to say that the entire staff at Central Texas Animal Hospital is great. I've used Dr. Hill in 2 locations because no matter where she goes, I go. She is my vet, nobody else will do. Her care and compassion are remarkable. As a fierce dog mama, she knows how to handle me and her primary focus was my dog. I say "was" because I've recently lost my sweet Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Unfortunately, Dr. Hill had to give me the bad news that he was in congestive heart failure. That news can't be easy to deliver, but she had a way of softening the blow-- which was the biggest blow of my life. I live in far south Austin, but drive to Pflugerville just for Dr. Hill. I recommend her to EVERYBODY. When you meet her, you will have no doubt that she is the vet for you. Thanks to everyone in the office for being so great, and to Dr. Hill for being my rock during the most difficult time in my life. read more

Another way to tell an excellent veterinary clinic is how they handle things when your animal needs to be euthanized. We had 9 cats, several of whom were elderly, and one of whom had extraordinary physical problems. We unfortunately lost three of them in three months. The sensitivity and caring we were shown during such difficult times and as we made hard decisions just cemented my love of this clinic. Dr. Banks and Dr. Coleman both went above and beyond the call of duty for us. They cared about our cats and about us, and spent a lot of time going over our options and making sure we had a clear picture about our cats' health. Just about any clinic can do a good job with healthy animals. A great clinic does an excellent job with sick and dying pets. I cannot recommend this clinic enough. read more

I have been a customer of Central Texas Animal Hospital since before covid made its impact. I understand that restrictions during the pandemic were put in place to keep everyone safe. However, restrictions have been lifted and they still do not allow customers to enter the building. They make you and your animal wait in your car until they are ready to see him. It was 100 degrees outside and they did not even have any water available for my dog to drink while we waited. When asked when business operations would go back to normal they told me "who knows". I asked for a recommendation list of other local vets in the area and they told me they could not make any recommendations for other local vets. To be fair the employees seemed nice. However, I will be taking my business somewhere else that values professionalism and its customer's experience. read more

I do not like to Yelp. I see that others have had to do the same. I feel like it is important so no one else sees their money go down the same hole. and much more importantly, endangers the life and comfort of their pet. We have had several horrible experiences with Dr. Hill and will not be coming back for more. She has: a. Misdiagnosed. b. Sold us products we didn't need. C. Tried to push us into expensive surgery for specious purposes. D. Humiliated us by telling us we "didn't understand" what our elderly dog needed. In fact, she blew off the fact the dog was filled with cancer, which she had previously diagnosed and told us would take the dog's life in about four months... this all happened about ten months later... and told us we were making her life hell by not offering her a comfortable life. If anyone knows us, that is never in question...our house and lives are devoted to our pets. The outcome: One elder dog all night at ER vet nearly dying and the other living with an out of control staph infection that she could have stopped but didn't bother to even look at. Instead, she was too busy sending a sample of a little cyst to pathology (after she made a big show of looking at three slides herself and saying they were just unclear) and telling us "it might be cancer." Our new vet diagnosed it quickly as a 'doggy zit.' This is shameful behavior. I have known a few of the Doctors and much of the staff at CTAH for many years. I think they are great people. I just cannot understand how this could be so out of control. I don't know if there is just one renegade vet or the problem is systemic. However, at this point I am unwilling to find out: I am done. We have taken our 1.5year-old dog for medical issues occasionally and had no problem. However, their grooming service is AWEFUL!! Like other reviews posted here and there, my dog got totally terrified when returned home after their grooming. Nails got clipped way too short, hair got shaved very unevenly, with lots of nicks and cuts. Poor little dog was behaving like a different dog - seemed very sad and scared. He was a happy, romping youngster until he went there. For $43, you can find someone else who treats your dog nicer. Definitely NOT recommend them for grooming services. read more

If I could put 0 stars, that would be great I will never be going back to this place they do not care about my pups well being they only cared about the money they kept offering me all kinds of stuff he did not need . They also ignored i was there and started talking about how something can be a big problem to my dog, to try and get me to do it when i clearly before said i did not want to because I had already an appointment somewhere else for it. They covered my pups mouth with such force that his eyes looked like they were going to pop out, not only did they do this but when I tried to checkout they had me waiting 10 min when it wasn't even bussy, they were so unorganized and they didn't even give me my pups medications said they "didn't charge me for it" when it was clearly on the receipt they gave me ?. They are so good with my pets! My cat is kinda mean, and they gave her a shot and she didn't even hiss. They use some kind of plug in that's supposed to calm the cat and I was shocked how good they were. They are straight forward about the cost of services and their employees truly are pet LOVERS. My dog pees every time he goes in there and they are so nice about it. (what can I say, he knows he's at the vet). But when he had a surgery they offered to text me throughout the day on how he was doing. I got a text on his blood work, a text that he had finished surgery, a text with a picture showing me he was waking up ok. THAT is customer service. They are great. I have referred others to them too. I had considered cheaper neuter services that didn't call back and I decided to go with the experts. read more

Stay away!!! Can't diagnose simple dogs issues. Overpriced for the expertise they provide. They referred us to a specialist, that specialist was shocked to hear the instructions that were given to us. 1 cat put down and we almost put down our dog when all she needed was a medical change. They are also extremely slow, sat in little room with a post epileptic dog's episode for 45 minutes. After seizures dogs just wanna move around, that little room had her crying the entire time. Then I stood there for 10 minutes trying to pay, why? The old ladies are rude and slow, docs are amateur with no bedside manner. Techs/assistants are great though. Dr Ussery is great, I wish we got her every time! Unfortunately we can't request her care. read more

I have been bringing my personal pets as well as my foster rescue dogs here for several years. The office has been very thoughtful in helping me get the dogs the care they need within my rescue budget. They have been compassionate and caring with my rescues who come to me often with very little history so we are unsure of their reaction to being poked and prodded. They take thorough information on what we do know about them as well as getting their previous vet care. My dogs have had multiple surgeries, office visits and grooming care over the years and I have been very happy with every pet (personal and rescue). The pets can't tell us what is wrong and sometimes we have tried a 2nd time to treat a problem, but they call to check on the pet to be sure the issue is resolving. I moved out of the neighborhood, but continue to bring my animals here because I trust them. read more

Since moving here a year ago, we choose this vet because we needed dog boarding and central tx animal hospital had the best rates. We continued to use them for routine vet care and they have always been kind and it seems like the staff really cares about the animals. My dog decided to tear her ACL equivalent and we just recently had it fixed here. The surgeon was awesome, the vet was awesome, and the techs were awesome. We are very happy with the results. Hopefully Onyx will learn that she is not a real super hero and that flying off the back porch at full speed to chase rabbits is a a fruitless endeavor. One can only hope, I would prefer to not have to pay for any more surgeries. Sigh. read more
