Recently went to try some Indian chaat and appetizers at this place. We ordered hara bhara kabab, chhole puri and dahi papdi chaat. Of all items I loved dahi papdi chaat as it had good amount of tang and spice to it. Hara bara kabab was good and the chutneys given on side went well with it. It could have been more spicy for spice lovers. Chhole puri tasted good too and the pickle given on side definitely added to the flavor. Service is quick and staff comes and gives you food at your table. They had good amount of seating available and had baby seats also. They play some music on tv but it's not over the top. Definitely satisfies an afternoon craving for Indian street food. I enjoyed the bhel, sev pani puri, and plain puris. The sev was on the sweeter side and I would have preferred more savory than sugary. I was pleased that they had plain puris which is what my kiddos prefer. The tea & mango lassi were cheaper than the South Bay. The cashier was patient as we stumbled over food decision making. Otherwise there is not much interaction with the staff. You first place order upfront (pay same time or later). In all of my visits, I've been greeted by two ladies at the counter who are sweet and will take/process the order fast. Ambience - ok, mostly 90's bollywood music in background. Now coming to the gem- it's there "homemade carrot pickle". I haven't eaten that since leaving my hometown in India and it was my first time seeing it at a restaurant in the bay area. A little amount is served with Thali but you can get more if you would like. I liked it so much that I even asked them if they could sell but sadly they are not. Customer service plays a huge role in return business. If I had any faith in humanity, it has completely disappeared after this. I walked into this establishment because my 5 year old son needed to use the restroom before his covid shot next door. I told the greeter: "I'm so sorry to ask this but my son really needs to use the restroom." as my son was standing there clutching his pants about to #2 himself. The response- "Restrooms are for customers only." For me, that is not a problem. I will buy something. I didn't care for the assumption that I wasn't going to buy something while my son almost soils himself. I told him that it wasn't a problem and rushed my son into the bathroom where he barely got in on time. We exited the bathroom to make our purchase and then was proceeded to be asked if I had cash. Apparently if you make a purchase less than $10, you NEED to pay in cash. I don't like carrying cash with me, especially NOW during covid. My credit cards and debit cards are legal tender too but I guess I need to pull out cash on top of all of this inconvenience. A word of advice... probably should be a little bit more understanding and empathetic to your customers for repeat business. If I ever were to want Indian cuisine, I would never return to this establishment based on this experience and probably would go out of my way to give someone else my money. For the price, the portion sizes are huge but there was this one curry that was pretty spicy (noted: my spice tolerance is not that high). I wasn't the biggest fan of the dessert. - Dahi Papdi Chaat - I think this restaurant really lives up to its name, Chaat House. The Chaat was delicious with just the right onion flavor as well as various textures throughout the dish. It's not the prettiest looking dish, but is tastes pretty good. I love this place! It's a no frills authentic restaurant (at least according to my Indian friends) where you can grab a quick snack for cheap or spend a little time to fill your belly. The bf and I shared Bhel Poori, Chaat Samosa and a House Thali. We weren't starving so this was the perfect amount for 2 people to snack on. The food was flavorful and satisfying. Not to mention, Chaat House's pricing is super reasonable! My only complaint/feedback is they use a very very strong-smelling detergent spray to bus the tables. It is SUPER STRONG and basically made it hard to enjoy the food. While I'm sure it probably does a great job disinfecting the tables, the smell is so strong, you can smell it a few tables down. It reminded me of Pinesol and a heavily chlorinated swimming pool. If you aren't sensitive to strong smelling chemicals, you'll be fine. Just a heads up! read more
