We went here to celebrate a special occasion and were pleasantly surprised with the good food and courteous, prompt service. They have a bright and airy space, although the fake plants at the entrance make you wonder if this really is an upscale place. They also have an outdoor patio where we saw a group dining with one of their furry friends. For appetizers, we ordered the Kerala chicken fry - well seasoned and crispy with a delicious dipping sauce. For the entrees, we got a potlam goat biryani - a delicious biryani wrapped in a banana leaf served table side. We also got the Fish Pollichathu, a fish grilled with a tomato based topping that was wrapped in a banana leaf and served with a tapioca mash and rice. All the dishes were delicious. The portions are generous and we ended up with leftovers to take back home. We also received a complimentary gulab jamun creme brulee since I was part of their mailing list and a pistachio tiramisu to celebrate our special occasion. We tried the Onam Sadhya at Anantara Fremont, featuring around 30 vegetarian dishes served as part of the traditional festive spread. There was a great variety, and it was a nice way to experience the flavors and spirit of Onam. Service was quick , and despite not having a reservation, they were able to accommodate us. The ambiance is very pleasant too. That said, we enjoyed our meal but my folks found most of the dishes to be spicy which may not suit everyone--especially young kids. We asked for yogurt which the restaurant provided without hesitation. My toddler found almost everything too spicy, but happily enjoyed the sweets, banana chips, payasam, which was definitely a highlight! At around $60 per person, it is on the pricier side for a vegetarian meal, but for a special treat and to celebrate Onam, it may be worth experiencing. Anantara was great! We came here to celebrate my grandma's birthday and it was a pleasant experience. Service was good and the ambiance is nice, pretty decorations and vibe. It's just a little cold in there for some reason. We started with a watermelon spritz and the inji-puli lotus appetizer since we'd never tried anything like that, and it was very yummy and had such a nice crispy but soft texture. It was also a good portion for all four of us. We got the goat curry and the chettinad spice vegetables, and a few parathas to share. We were afraid it wouldn't be enough but the parathas are actually very filling, and also have a really great texture of both crispy and soft, and delicious flavor. The curries were good, could have used a bit more salt but good spice. The stars of the show were the desserts - this deserves its own section because omg I'm still thinking about the desserts!!! We got the gulab jamun brûlée - an amazingly well done take on creme brûlée with a perfect top, easy to crack and beautifully flavored. The filling was amazing and sweet and so so yummy. They also were kind enough to give us a complimentary chocolate cake which was absolutely amazing. I'm generally not too impressed by chocolate but the quality of this cake was phenomenal with perfect sweetness and richness. I need these two again !! A little pricy, a little noisy, and some slower service on a Friday night, but we were able to get in without a reservation and our meal was absolutely delicious. I'd recommend everything we ordered: Karuveppilai Shrimp (to-die-for-good) Kal Dosa Malabar Black Cod Grandma's Goat Curry Malabar Porotta (naan-like but way better) Although the interior of the restaurant is very pretty, we plan to eat outside next time to avoid some of the noise which was probably our only real complaint. We get it though -- this is a more upscale restaurant, the type where families go to celebrate special occasions. Anantara is an upscale, Indian dining establishment in Fremont. We found the food to be very good, offering many items we don't typically see at Indian restaurants. We started with the crab podimas, which is a crab cake, $20. It was pretty good, flavorful and not oily. We would order this again. Then, we tried the karuveppilai shrimp, which is a grilled shrimp for $19. This was our favorite appetizer of the evening. The shrimp were large and had a good smoky flavor, but were not dry. We followed this with inji-puli lotus root, $17, which is deep fried lotus root in a tamarind sauce. We've never tried lotus root prepared in this fashion. It was good. Our final appetizer was the thattukeda chicken fry, $18. They were good, too. The pieces were crispy and not oily. It was a large portion that could feed many people. Our entree was the malabar black cod, $38. We enjoyed that, too, with one malabar porotta, which is type of bread, $6. It's like naan, but different. It seemed to be very popular item there. The interior is nice and it feels elevated and romantic. However, the service was really lacking. For the price point of $20-30s+ for entrees and adding a bowl of rice for $7, the bare minimum should be water refills and asking how the food is/if we need anything. I was mid sentence saying my order and the waiter suddenly attended to the table next to us instead (they were putting two tables together). It felt odd and a little rude. Once more people came, it got really busy and the service got worse. They only have the fancy water at each table and they took it away earlier so we were really thirsty. I'd recommend putting self serve water jugs on each table to alleviate this issue. The food is flavorful and yummy, but I wasn't blown away. Maybe we didn't order the right things? Overall, the price doesn't justify the quality of service. The taste was authentic, very flavorful, and extremely well-spiced! I want to go back and try the thali, which is only available on weekdays. I also want to try other items on the menu because everything looked amazing. Just delicious The appam, the fish starters, the prawn curry, and the biryani damn, everything was better than the last. We had very few leftovers and felt like pandas walking out, but it was sooo worth it. Celebrated a friend's birthday here and was surprised by how much we enjoyed the whole experience, from the ambiance to the service to the food itself. It was a very memorable meal for both of us. We made same day reservations for dinner at 6 pm on Friday and it was pretty easy. When we arrived, the first thing you notice is that it's beautifully decorated inside, with high ceilings, painted walls, and nice light fixtures. Most of the Indian restaurants I've been to are super casual, so it was nice to see a more upscale spot for once. To start, I got the watermelon fizz ($12), which was super refreshing. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nonalcoholic drink. My friend got the saffron lager ($8). It was his first time trying it but he said it was as good as Taj, which he really likes. For food, we shared a couple of items and everything was a hit, which is very rare for me. We started off with the chicken fry ($17), which was perfectly flavored and fried just the right amount. Honestly I think this was the best Indian-style fried chicken I've had. I liked it much more than the typical chicken 65 I've gotten at other places. For our entrees, we had the chicken potlam biryani ($32) and the nizami paneer ($25), with a malabar porotta ($6) and kal dosa ($6) on the side. The nizami paneer was really good, but it wasn't too different from other good paneer curries I've had before. What really stood out was the chicken biryani, which is cooked and served in a banana leaf. Portions are MASSIVE and every bite is chock full of flavor. It was good because restaurant was busy on Sunday afternoon and we got the last lunch slot. We sat outside and tables were good and service was good too, considering festival season. Mutton Elumbu Soup: I did not taste this but hubby said it was yummy. Chicken 65: Probably the best we have had in the recent times/ in bay area. Crispy, crunchy, juicy on the outside and well cooked on the outside, perfectly seasoned, spicy OG of the OG Potlam biryani: Whoaaaa absolutely loved it. Must try dish here. The ambiance gives upscale Indian vibes and it was definitely very crowded when we were there. We ordered the mushroom pallipalyalam and thattukada chicken fry for appetizers and both were really tasty and portions were also good. For the mains we ordered Telangana mutton curry, chettinad fish curry, Madurai chicken curry, goat biriyani, chicken biriyani, and malabar parota. That said, the pricing didn't match the overall experience. Paying $6 for a small Dixie cup of chai was disappointing. I also ordered the cashew paneer dish, which was tasty, but for $26 I expected much more than what amounted to about eight small pieces of paneer. It just didn't feel like a good value. The chicken fry was the highlight of the meal. It was flavorful and came in a generous portion. On the other hand, the mini idlis were underwhelming and didn't stand out. I appreciate that the restaurant is aiming for a more elevated, high-end take on Indian cuisine, and everything was presented beautifully. We visited this Indian restaurant for Saturday lunch. Reservations were open, and while the place wasn't full, it had a decent number of diners. We were warmly greeted and seated promptly. A server quickly came by to offer water (tap or bottled) and handed us menus. Shortly after, another server stopped to see if we had questions or were ready to order. We ordered the lotus root inji pulli, alleppey shrimp curry, egg roast with ghee pepper rice, appam, and Malabar parotta. Service was quite slow. The appetizer arrived first--it was hot, tangy, and nicely spiced. However, the lotus root was quite chewy; not sure if that's how it's meant to be. There was another long gap before the mains arrived. The shrimp curry was hot, but everything else was lukewarm or cold. The flavors of the shrimp curry and egg roast were decent but nothing memorable. The appam was very thin, and the ghee pepper rice lacked fragrance or the flavor of ghee--we could see pepper, but couldn't taste it. They also forgot our parotta and only brought it when we asked, and by then, it was cold too. No one checked in to see how the meal was or if we needed anything else, which added to our disappointment. read more

I was here on a date night with my hubby. Being from Kerala, we were curious about their menu. We had made prior reservation for 7 pm and we reached around 6:45 pm but we were seated after seeing our reservation online. The ambience is very much green with artificial olive trees and banana tree / coconut tree wall papers etc. It's a bit small seemed but was crowded by the time our food started coming. Our server was very polite, and helpful with everything. We ordered two cocktails, one Madeira mimosa and the other Coromandel flame. The later one is very sweet that you don't want to drink it anymore. We ordered, inji puli lotus root- loved it, karuveppulai shrimp - delicious, they had one named kalan, which was a surprise as Kalan is one of the side dish we have in Kerala. I was not very impressed with this one. It was okay, seemed like a mix of cauliflower or something with garnishing cornflakes. From the main dishes we ordered, Grandma's goat curry- it was okay! Alleppey shrimp curry which was delicious, a Kochi style of cooking enjoyed it with malabar parotta. I couldn't finish the parotta as it was so heavy with ghee/oil. We did take home the left overs. Perfectly crisp without being overfried, and with light batter that allowed for the taste of the okra to come through. Gunpowder Idli Bites (4/5) - the challenge with gunpowder idli at most places is that the spice overpowers the taste of everything else. Not here...it had just enough spice that you know it's spicy without overpowering your palette Inji Puli Lotus Root (4/5) another star dish thanks to the ginger tamarind sauce. I've had this at a number of other places (Inchin's once upon a time) and the magic is always in the sauce - Amantara nailed it. Right mix of the tangy with the ginger strips Angamaly Mango Curry (2.5/5) Frankly, after the amazing appetizers this dish fell a bit short. Somehow the combination of mango and coconut didn't quite do it for us. Sadhya (4/5) : this was a new dish recommended by our server Ganesh. It consisting of rice, 3 curries, 3 veggies and 3 chutneys with a side of papad. Filling, flavorful and with a ton of variety. Gulab Jamun Brûlée (2/5) - the rabdi that came with the brûlée was waaayy too sweet and could have been less sweet for a more enjoyable taste. Fremont truly deserves a fine dining spot like Anantara. The ambiance is warm and tastefully decorated, a refreshing change for the area. We visited for Valentine's Day lunch and the place was packed, with a special menu just for the day. We tried the cranberry rasam, banana blossom kola, and parottas - all of which were standouts. It is a lot of effort to make Banana Flower Kola, I really appreciated this one. The rasam was tangy and refreshing. The chicken over rice (dont remember the name they had on spl menu), though, was a bit of a letdown. The rice lacked the depth or aroma you'd expect from a biryani-style dish, and the chicken felt more like seekh kebab, not quite what you'd expect from a South Indian specialty restaurant. Our friend took us here to experience some Tamil cuisine. I dont know what it's called but we got some bread in curry wrapped in foil and it was very good! U can add raita and curry sauce to it. My party of three managed to snag a reservation for lunch on Thanksgiving Day, and thank goodness we did. The place was bustling, but the service was incredibly attentive and top-notch, even with the holiday rush. The interior is beautiful, spotless, and nicely decorated, setting such a great, comfortable vibe. Starters That Stole the Show: We started strong with three appetizers that were seriously delicious. * The Railway Cutlets were adorable heart-shaped perfection, perfectly spiced and incredibly tasty. * We devoured the super yummy Gunpowder Idli Bites served with a coconut chutney that was dangerously good. * The Crab Podimas was a unique and flavorful dish--a new one for us. My only thought was that it absolutely needed a side of fresh roti to complete the perfect rainy-day meal at home! Mains That Felt Like Home: Nothing we ordered was overly spicy, which was lovely. Every single item on the plate, including the two desserts, was delicious. * But the absolute star of the day, my favorite dish we ordered, was the Halibut Pollichathu. The fish was perfectly cooked and gorgeously spiced. It came with a side of what seemed like mashed cassava with coconut chutney, which was such a unique and inspired pairing that complemented the fish flawlessly. Passing the Ultimate Test: They passed my crucial test: the Cha. I firmly believe a perfect cup of cha is the tell-tale sign of a great Indian kitchen, and theirs was absolutely spot on. My dining companions also enjoyed their nicely presented mimosa. The fact that the food and the cha were both flawless tells you everything you need to know. We visited this place on Sunday afternoon. It was super crowded. I would suggest go with reservation. We ordered veg paneer and chicken fried starter. For main course ordered chicken curry, fish fry with appam, paratho and ghee rice. I would say overall the food was ok. The restaurant carries more of kerala taste. Every dish had pepper flavor which quite did not go well with paneer starter. What truly elevated this place is their ambience. So will recommend this place for a cozy dinner or a special celebration. read more

My experience at Anantara did not leave me impressed nor satisfied. Overall, it was not a good value for what they charge in terms of experience or quality of food. I was in a party of four who ate there on a Tuesday afternoon. The kitchen was slow sending out our dishes which was disappointing. The Karuveppilai shrimp was scant. There were six pieces of shrimp. The dish is $19. Good value? I don't think so. The chicken fry was well fried and very good. It had a lot of chicken so it was good value. On the point of value, they charge $5-$6 for a single dosa or porotta. How stingy. At other indian restaurants, you would get multiple pieces of bread for the same price. When you order multiple, the price adds up. We ordered the house fish curry and the chicken stew. The curry was quite thin and watery. There were only a few pieces of fish or chicken in it. It was not worth the price. We ordered 3 diet cokes which totaled $18 and two buttermilks which were also $18. The drinks alone costing that much is crazy. *** BEWARE *** They charge an automatic 22% service charge for parties of five or more. If you are a family, proceed with caution. The biryani was mid. I was not pleased that I had to spit out bits of chicken bones. When you charge that much, you better make sure everything is edible so I don't choke or have to pick out bones. The bill was $231.53 before tip. Not worth the price in my opinion. It didn't even make up for it in experience. Suggestion: Go to Charminar instead. It's 10 minutes away and far better experience and costs 1/3 less than here. read more

We ordered the gunpowder idli, tender jack cutlet, Sri Lankan devil cauliflower, appalam crust paneer, Vazhaipoo Kola Urundal, injipuli lotus root, Malabar paratha, vegetable potlam biryani, kadale gassi with sannas, veg kothu parotta, gutti vonkaya with coconut pulao, Madurai chicken curry, and Malabar Parottas. Everything was excellent. Appetizers arrived quickly which I appreciated because I was hungry. Veg Biryani wrapped in banana leaf was the star. Service was on point and no issues. Ambiance and decor is nice and sets a good dinner time mood as the sun sets. read more
