A gem in the New Haven dining scene, largely for its versatility. I've been to Florian for dinner, brunch, and happy hour and have enjoyed myself each visit. While I've enjoyed all of these experiences, my favorite time to come here is happy hour. My date and I were in downtown New Haven on a Friday night and decided to stop at Florian for a drink and small bite to eat. It was cute inside, but since it was a nice night, we decided to sit outside on their little patio. I ordered a lavender martini which was very tasty and my date ordered a maple bourbon old fashioned which also was very good. We ordered the crab cake and the mariniere moules frites (mussels, Belgium fries in a garlicky broth). The crab cake was decent, but the mussels and the Belgium fries with the lemon aioli were plentiful and delicious. We were served by Kevin who made us feel very welcomed and had lots of enthusiasm. We also were served by Trinity who was amazing, answered all of our questions and she is the reason why we will definitely be returning! Atelier Florian will always have a special place in my heart so perhaps this review is slightly biased. I first came here in 2016 and had a really great time. I went back in 2017 and 2018 but that was the last time, until today for brunch. My friend made a 12pm reservation but we got there at about 12:11pm and we were seated with no issues. The host grabbed us some still water and our waitress came over. She was very polite and patient as we sifted through the menu. I grabbed the Avocado Benedict and a peach mimosa. They have several flavors for the mimosa, you just have to ask for it. Our food came out within 12 minutes but they actually gave me the wrong order. The server immediately noticed and rectified it. I hosted a small party at Atelier Florian recently. The ambiance is that of a small bistro and bar. Most tables were full and I was happy I had thought to reserve ahead. The menu tends toward Belgian seafood. There was an entire section dedicated to mussels served on a variety of broths. We started with a few appetizers: arancini, vegetarian risotto balls, breaded and fried; crispy Brussels sprouts and a few raw oysters (tonight there were Wellfleet and Blue Point). All were well received. Entrees varied. I tried the Mussels Provenciale. It was served in a stainless pot, well seasoned and ample in serving. Others in my party tried the salmon, served over a squash risotto and another tried the squid ink pasta. Everyone's meal was delicious. Service was prompt, efficient without being intrusive. My family and I were traveling from Philadelphia to Maine for our annual ski trip and found this gem in the heart of the Yale Campus in New Haven. Since it was Christmas break, it was absolutely dead since all the college kids were back home for the holidays. This place is a French Bistro style restaurant with high quality ingredients and a small, well executed menu. A little pricey for a lunch spot but all the food was really good. Our waiter K was attentive and extremely kind. He was playful with my kids and gave them a piece of candy after they ate their lunch. The clam chowder was absolutely delicious, fried calamari was Ok. I would recommend the arancini, and the Croque monsieur. Only reason for not 5 stars, I think for the price, the food should've been more elevated than what we got. Both still and sparkling water are on the house (and they told us upfront) which we appreciated. Onto the food! I visited Florian for the first time a couple Saturdays ago for brunch. I decided to sit at the bar and it was great! Although I wasn't really drinking alcohol, but I did have a mimosa. The brunch was good. The Belgian waffle was a little soggy but tasty! Justin, the bartender was AMAZING!!! He was soo sweet and kept checking and making sure I was good and we had great conversation. The only thing that I wasn't fond of was the PESTERING FLIES AROUND THE BAR! I was so enjoying everything until the flies were just ruining my experience because I loved the ambiance, food and service. But thankfully Justin did what he could to appease me. Service was good, direct without being pushy, brasserie style. We just disliked that the waiter never hesitated to interrupt our conversation. Food was OK, fish and chips offered a delicious, well cooked fish while the French fries were very disappointing. Maybe it was the quality of the potatoes, or the chef's interpretation of how to cook fries the Belgian way, just not my thing. The mussels were surprisingly big, less refined than the smaller ones. My cousin found this lovely location when searching for a brunch spot in New Haven. It was so cute inside, and the staff was so friendly and patient, especially to my two-year-old son. We started with lobster muscles which were very yummy. I wish we'd been given a spoon to eat the broth, but we took it home to enjoy later! The eggs and cheese were perfect for my son, as was the fruit bowl since it was his two favorites: strawberries and blueberries. Our meals were delicious. We were giving options on where we would like to be seated. Our server was Justin would said it was his third day but I would never have been able to tell. He was beyond great. My coworker and I stopped visiting for Florian never had a consistent, educated mixologist with an awesome personality. We are bar flys. However, the bartender, Ariel, is great! Even my 70 year old parents enjoy her company, and they are extremely high maintenance, picky customers to say the least! Thank you for hiring an employee who sincerely loves their job! She was very knowledgeable on the menu- explained the difference between the local oysters and the ones of the day. Also, made great recommendations that were perfect based on our palates. To our surprise, when presenting the dessert menu, she made a point of mentioning that the cheesecake was made the day before, which again was an extremely great recommendation. Oh dear, this wonderful place has not recovered yet. Concerns started before arrival when we tried to confirm an NA beer option and was informed that there were none. After pressing the issue we were offed the option of bringing a bottle of NA beer and being charged a $10 'corking fee'. When this was appealed to the manager the fee was reduced to $5 which was still a bit hard to understand. We ordered the 'oysters of the day' which the server described as larger and sweeter than their regular offering but found them to be fishy, small and better listed as 'oysters worse than our usual'. The Shishito Peppers also suffered a not-fresh feeling. We are used to blistered ones with a bit of the pepper flavor remaining in the meat inside but these were over sautéd, oily and limp without the charring. Mussels were fine, bread wasn't offered and the frites that came with were limp and soggy. The Seared Tuna was perfect. It was a fairly thin piece so asking for it rare was essential. The black ink pasta with seafood and the salmon also seemed fine though did not elicit any comments from our guests. However, we noticed after the fact the our guest's second beer was not the one ordered but this was noticed too late to correct. Throughout the evening we liked the wait staff but feared she was stretched way too thin as she struggled to serve us. We also felt bad for the table next to us that had to ask for their salad order after their entrees were served. An odd ending to the meal was noticing that the chocolate desert on the restraunt week menu was not offered to us since we didn't do the three course meal and the standard desert menu lacked anything chocolate. The other people in my party ordered garden omelettes also well done. Their omelettes arrived and looked ok. Mine arrived and was the barely the size of the palm of my hand was barely cooked. The waitress never came back to check on us. We asked to have our coffee refilled and the guy came back and filled one out the four coffees at our table. When we asked him to come refill all of them, the response was "Well they didn't look empty." (Mine was empty) No additional milk was offered when we did finally get refills. The restaurant was not crowded when we were there but the staff was so lackluster, I felt like they all needed a nap. Needless to say we won't be returning. read more

This was across the street from our hotel so we came for a drink. They have a long bar in the front where we sat. It has a decent ambiance but I wouldn't consider it a romantic wine bar. The menu has hand crafted cocktails, a solid beer selection, and a few different wines. They also had some high end liquors too if you were looking for the good stuff. We stuck with red wine and enjoyed the two we had. We had the malbec and the temperillo which are some of my favorites. We didn't try the food but it looked good coming out of the kitchen. It seems like a mix between italian and french. The bartender was very nice and let us have a drink even though it was 45 minutes before closing time. I used to come here all the time when I lived in New Haven, and I returned after 6 years and still loved it! The inside is beautiful and reminds me of places in Europe. Kevin was our server and he was friendly and attentive. My favorites to start with are the Crispy Brussels Sprouts and Blistered Shishito Peppers. We always get some Moules Frites, either the Red Curry or Mariniére. This time we got squid ink pasta with seafood which was amazing! We also tried the lobster roll and the one of the fish dishes (I can't remember which), but they were both great. They were out of the ceviche, but we have tried it in the past and loved it. My partner got the short ribs which were fine. I got muscles and they were sandy, chewy, and way fishier that muscles should be. I really wish I said something in hindsight, but I felt bad because our waiter was so nice. The broth was tasty but there was very little served in the bowl. I also wish they provided you with bread for dipping, like most places that serve muscles. The muscles also come with fries, which were fine but kind of limp. I ate them because I couldn't stomach the muscles after a while. The lemon aioli that came with the fries was tasty. We did get the crème brûlée for dessert which was very good, and made up for the rest of the meal. I am hoping it was just an off night.
