First let me say I have used Chambliss on a couple of different occasions at my own house, but it has been quite a while since I needed their services. They were excellent at the time, and still have good reviews, so I called them to get a plumber out to find the source of a very slow leak within an exterior wall going to the hose bib. I called at 7:59 AM (their hours are from 8-5) and was greeted by the assistant who schedules appointments outside of working hours. She wanted me to describe in detail what my problem was, and I said there was a leak inside a stucco-clad exterior wall. I also asked if they had leak detection equipment, and she said they had moisture meters and camera equipment to pinpoint the source of a leak, so I scheduled the appointment, and I was told that the charge is X dollars for the first 30 minutes, and 'Y' dollars for every additional 30 minutes. The appointment was scheduled for between 1 and 3PM, and I received a call shortly after 1 from the plumber saying he was about 15 minutes out. Good so far. I had already cut out a small section of stucco, and determined that the leak was coming from above the cutout. He wanted to cut into the sheetrock inside, but I was hesitant to do that out of respect for the tenant, who was out of town that day, and I did not want him to come home to a mess in his master bedroom. I stuck my hand as far up as I could, and felt what appeared to be a connection, possibly where the PEX coming down the wall mated with the copper hose bib assembly. We decided to cut about another 10 inches up on the stucco to see if it was leaking at the connection. He had a battery operated oscillating multi-tool with a very dull blade. He didn't get very far, when the battery died. The backup battery was also dead, so he said 'well, I guess we wait'. I said, no, we don't, I have both a corded mini circular saw and a corded oscillating tool in the back of my car. The saw very quickly cut the stucco out, and the oscillating tool cut out the OSB behind the stucco. There was indeed a PEX-to-copper transition there. He had me go to the front and turn the water on, which had been turned off since early morning. When I came back, we weren't seeing any leak at all, and after just a minute the plumber wanted to cut into the wall. My wife even watched for a leak for about 10 minutes, and never saw a drop. After they left, we got to talking about it, and neither of us saw whether he bled the air out of the line. Anyway, I asked him to use the moisture meter or camera to see if there was moisture farther up the wall on the inside (this was a home with blown-in foam insulation, and it was saturated in the vicinity of the hose bib and had made the carpet wet inside by the baseboard). He laughed and said they don't have any of that equipment. I told him what the assistant said, and he said 'Oh, that was our AI assistant', as if that was a decent excuse for presenting a prospective customer with incorrect information. At this point, I told him to just cut the pex line in the attic and cap it, and we would figure out what to do later. I also asked for a quote to replace the line before he left. The quote came out to what amounted to about 8 hours of labor to cut the sheetrock to provide access (the wall and part of the sloped ceiling, and run a new line. It did not include doing any sheetrock or stucco repair. In my opinion, the work should take a few hours at most, since they wouldn't have to 'fish' anything from the attic, just attach and secure the pex line. I was very disappointed that they were unprepared (tool-wise) to do a job that I had described in detail. The plumber was even fascinated by the mini-saw and how quickly it cut the stucco (and incidentally would also make sheetrock cuts in seconds). When charging by the half-hour, one would think they would have the tools to do the job efficiently. It made me wonder how they would've cut the sheetrock all the way past the top of the wall and into the ceiling. And who uses battery-powered tools for a residence, where AC power is readily available? The most important point I'd like to leave you with is that Kevin Chambliss no longer owns the company. The plumber told me he recently sold it. Apparently the new company is riding on the excellent reputation that Chambliss has built over decades of service. I'm sad to say that based on this experience, even though the plumber and his assistant were very nice and polite, I can no longer recommend them. UPDATE: After reading the response from the company, I am adjusting my rating because of the professional and concerned response from the company. I am relieved to know that wasn't just some corporate takeover of an excellent company, and that it was just a series of unfortunate events (AI issue and dead batteries) that left me with a bad impression. Given the information they provided, I will continue to use them for future plumbing needs. read more

The lasted issue occurred last night when we discovered that our upstairs water heater was leaking from the bottom and had overflown the reservoir pan. We finally decided to replace our old worn out carpet with wood flooring. We did our research and chose a company with very high ratings. They came in and put down some really nice floors. I will not go into details here, but I will just say we had to have plumbing repairs for 3 huge mistakes the floor company made. We hired Chambliss for each of these repairs. The first visit came a couple of weeks after the floors were done. They took off some of the sheet rock and found a nail in the right sink water line. They did a great job fixing it, and we thought everything was fine. Then during the Labor Day holiday another leak showed up. Can you say $$$$? They checked the original repair, and it was fine. They took out more sheet rock and found another nail in the left sink. They fixed this one also. Prior to the sheet rock being repaired we found another nail. This was in the PVC drain pipe. Another call to Chambliss. When they came back, they found another nail in the same pipe, so we now had 2 nails in the PVC. Because of where the nails were, the job became complex. After getting some additional supplies that they did not carry on their truck, they fixed the problem. So why not 5 stars? It was some small things. They should have spotted the nails in the PVC in searching for the leaks. Also, they should have had all the parts on their truck. Will I use them again? Ugh, Water heater giving us issues. Momma likes her hot water bath so what Momma wants Momma gets. The wife had been complaining for a month or more about our hot water. There wasn't enough for both of us in the morning and it was taking a very long time to reheat. I assumed one of the elements had gone out. I called Chambliss and they got me on their schedule. Joe and Jesse arrived as planned and got right to work. Joe was excellent in explaining things. They were prepared for any situation that might arise, i.e. not meeting code and the upgrades that may be required. Since it was an older water heater I decided the best route was jsut to replace the water heater instead of the element. I've known Kevin Chambliss since he started... out of his garage right down the street from my family's house at the time... literally, a few houses down the street. While he was working out of his garage, just him and his single van, he replaced a water heater for us. His work, and his work ethic, was superb. My family has used his company for all our plumbing needs since he started. Now that he's grown the company into a company with many employees and vehicles, the work ethic and philosophy has remained the same throughout the past 30 years. I know this reads like it's an ad, or a PR write-up for the company, but in all honesty... every review of a company is exactly that. It's either good PR, or bad PR... but PR all the same. Chambliss Plumbing isn't a good plumbing company... it's simply the best plumbing company in San Antonio. They charge a little more than the average plumbers in San Antonio, but you get what you pay for... and for the quality of the work, they charge a fair price. I recently, thought I'd try a different company for a small plumbing job that I thought was beneath Chambliss, I won't say which one, because this isn't an ad for their pink vans/trucks *wink wink*... but nevertheless, they didn't show up at the scheduled time... and when I called them, they had failed to put my appointment on their schedule. I can only say my experience was not all that pleasant. Cleaned out tree limbs from pipe from house to curb. Wanted $4500 to fix pipe!! But the whole problem was not fixed. Commode still would only flush twice then stop up. When I talk to owner, he was not very friendly. They also charged me almost $400 to come out and do what they did. Troy would never all me back about why commode was still not flushing. I feel they are excessively expensive. And, they never completed the job!! Finally had another company come out - what I needed it turns out was a new commode!! (My house was built in 1984). Things have been fine since new commode was installed. We were referred to Chambliss Plumbing from a friend who had great praises for them. The Chambliss plumbers Roy and Justin (Son of owner) came by and looked at a leak on my water heater. Luckily, they had said that the tank was still good and was not leaking but found the leak at the top where the main water line was feeding the tank. They also noticed that the pipes were corroded and changed that the fittings & pipes to the proper ones that resist corrosion. We had a previous company come take a look earlier in the week prior to Chambliss and was told that it may be a major overhaul and they quoted a high amount. Chambliss was very honest in their estimate and explained what they were going to do and they had the parts to do the job in their truck.
