So what happen was we have alot of stray cats in my neighborhood and my girlfriend and I put out food for them and this black and white stray running around one day. So I put out some tuna and sat next to it and waited and he slowly came out and eat a little bit then let me pet him then we sat there will he ate but he ran off because a truck was passing really loud. But one cold wet night on December 17 I saw that same black and white cat hiding under my car and I managed to catch him because his back leg was hurt so I brought him in and nursed him for three days and fell in love with him and my kids fell in love with him. I'm an army veteran and I got mental problems and this cat just made me calm and happy.Even tho he was in pain and couldn't walk he still meowed happily. So I never caught a stray so I was going to call animal control and asked but waited til December 19-20 because they were closed anyways I called and talked about the cat and didn't know what to but I was interested in adopting after so animal control guy came and we talked. Told him what happen and he said he would let us know what happen to him and his hurt leg. So from December 19 to January 11. I called every other day to check up on the cat. He at first just had a broken leg but then they looked and it was too damage to fix so they had to amputated the poor cats leg. So he was in recovery for 2 weeks or so but I would still call to check up on him. And on January 9 I called and they said he was good to go and recovering well and will be sent to a recuse. And I asked what recuse so I could get the paperwork start for the adoption and tell my kids the kitty coming home. But they said it's in their policy that they cant tell me which recuse he's going to. I'm like wtf I'm interested in this cat and been calling every other day to check up on the cat. And you telling you can't tell me what shelter he's going to? That's crazy. And it's not animals control policy it's who I guess is in charge of sending out animals to rescues. I checked their policy bunch of times and didn't see anything so I went in person with my girlfriend and we talked them and asked them who made this policy and why can't you tell us. Then they go get the lady who's in charge of the recuses and who's name is Heather Soder says it's her policy and she's decided that without including in the policy or should at least inform people or have a sign. And then she says she did that because she doesn't want people harassing her workers and I'm like okay that sorry for that but anyways we are interested in this cat for almost a month.They didn't let me visit the cat entire time he was here so now we are here in person and my girlfriend broke down crying because she just wants her cat back. Even then the lady stood there heartless and said it's my policy and I said well what shelters you go to and she said all of them and list off bunch of cities like that wasnt any help. Well thanks for the help I guess then she goes off saying there's plenty of cats out there to adopt and need love why don't go look at them. Really now? that's why we are trying to adopt this cat that's now a tripawd. Who's going to need more love. read more

I adopted one of my dogs from the CCHS, and I can't say enough wonderful things about this facility. I imagine they are working a shoestring budget but they nonetheless take wonderful care of the animals who unfortunately find themselves here. They have a rather involved screening process to make sure that the animals they adopt out really do find their proverbial "forever homes." When we adopted, there was a brief waiting period to avoid any impulsive adoptions, as well as a requirement that we bring in our other dog to meet our adoptee to make sure they got along. All of the staff were very friendly and you could tell from the way they interacted with the animals that they really care about all of the animals. Personally, I don't think I could do such heartbreaking work and maintain the kind, gracious, and dedicated demeanor that I have observed in the workers here. I adopted a dog a few months ago. She is a 3 year old border collie lab mix named Lily. I know when the dogs are given up the humane society relies on the former family being honest about the dogs behavior. I was told she was a friendly, sweet lap dog that has never had issues with other animals. She gets along with my cat great, but when other dogs come along on walks she flips out. She even attacked one recently. I'm positive she was abused by her previous family. Cchs didn't take great care of her either. Her pads were all torn in her front paws, which had her limping for the first few weeks, her gums bled like crazy and her teeth were in awful condition, and she was too skinny. We were ready to give her back because of the strain it put us through. We have since turned her around with training and gotten her back to full health, but it took hundreds and hundreds of dollars. read more

I have adopted three dogs from CCHS, and each one has been a great pet and addition to our family. I will say the adoption process is a little much. Having also adopted human children, this process was almost harder. (sorta just sorta kidding). I totally understand as a animal lover that the dogs need to go to homes that will care for them and be able to keep them long term, but it is a lot. Meeting the dog. Walking the dog. Walking the dog with your other dog. The other people in your family meeting the dog. The dog coming for Thanksgiving and meeting your in-laws. (kidding... But am I?) It was just a production which made it pretty complicated. We enjoy our pets but ultimately ended up going elsewhere for our last two dogs because of this process alone. I need for the humane society to trust me when I say I can be a pet owner. I know that clearly some people cannot handle the job or CCHS wouldn't exist - but responsible people also look elsewhere when the process is frustrating. read more

I can only speak from a perspective of adopting exotics from here, and not dogs or cats. All of the employees there were wonderful, helpful, nice, and patient with my husband and I as we came back on two occasions to meet with multiple rabbits. I didn't feel rushed and we were given all the time we needed to make a choice (we ended up getting 3 new friends). The adoption process was perfectly reasonable and straightforward and involved them contacting our landlord and us filling out brief paperwork. We decided to get another (older) kitty after losing two elderly cats that were close family members. The CCHS people that I interacted with were very professional and helpful. They were able to provide a lot of information about the cat, and their records reflected exams, shots, nail trims, etc. while she was there. She is a perfect fit for us, and I wouldn't hesitate to adopt from CCHS again if/when we decide to. read more

I've adopted two other pets in the past from other shelters and it was quite a pleasant experience. I wish I could say the same about The Champaign County Humane Society. The process of adoption was rather painless. However they need to train people at the front desk interpersonal skills. It is quite possible to be professional and pleasant. I adopted an older cat in the fall of 2005, so I will say this is an older review. However, I was incredibly upset with how I was treated afterward. My cat's adoption papers indicated that she had some tartar buildup on her teeth. Nope, not quite. Her teeth were rotting and disintegrating so badly that she often sat with her tongue out. Mind you she had been at the Humane Society for months so this should have been identified. $400 and a dental cleaning later, she only has a few teeth left. The CCHS response when I wrote about how upset I was--I could bring her back if I wanted. I'll never support--financially or otherwise--the CCHS after that response and the care my cat received while she was there. read more

I think it's great that they work toward getting animals adopted, but they make it way too difficult. Especially for first time owners. I get that they don't want to send an animal to an unfit owner, but the adoption process takes like 10-14 days. It's ridiculous. read more

We got a cat here. We liked it because the employees and volunteers were clearly commited to animal safety and welfare, and it was very clean. They even had empty kennels, so the animals can stay longer than if they were in larger cities with more strays. They stand a much better chance of being adopted. read more

This was the first animal shelter I ever went to and it was truly a wonderful experience. The staff is very good at what they do and they are very attentive to your needs. I went onto their site first to see a general list of cats and dogs. After I got there, I was immediately helped by a volunteer that explained the adoption process to me. They let me view where the dogs were and they even let me go outside to play with the dogs. They also have very helpful information papers on the dog cages so you have a good basic understanding of the dogs. After you decide on if you like the dog or not, you fill out an application and they go over it with you. I cannot believe how awesome this place is. The place is really clean and the staff are very very very helpful! I wish all other shelters were like this :x read more

Adopted a 2 year old cat. Process was simple, came in, spent time with some of the animals my girlfriend and I were interested in, we decided on a cat. Filled out 2 pages of paperwork and scheduled to pick up the cat 2 days later after a medical checkup. We could have picked her up the next day but we were going to be out of town. The medical records were accurate, in this case, where they identified some tartar(which the vet said didn't warrant a dental cleaning until her next appointment) and that she needed a rabies shot(was $15 at the vet I took her to). Just some things to note: you are required to take the pet you adopt to the vet within one week of adoption and you get a 15% off coupon at this local pet store along with a bag of food, you also get a small bag of science diet from the shelter itself. read more

I went to Champaign County Humane Society to take advantage of the promotion they ad to adopt an older cat. My son (who is three years old) was very excited to go pick out a cat. I wanted an older cat because my son is use to cats that are older more so than little kittens. My son was so excited to see all the cats there. He got upset because of something that had nothing to do with the animals. As soon as he started to act up, I took my son outside and had a talk with him letting him know he could not act that way or we would go home with no cat. My son understood and went back inside and continued looking at cats. He was calm and asked me if he could take a cat out. I told him we needed to ask at the front desk. My son went himself and asked Kate M. (Adoption Leader) if she could please take a black cat out for him to look at. He was very excited but when this Kate lady turned around and told me that she did not feel comfortable doing so. She said that she was nervous about taking a cat out because my son was "wild." I was so floored I could not even respond. She then said she would do it only if I kept a close eye on my own child. I just told her never mind since it seemed as though it was too much trouble for her to assist us. My son started to cry and we walked out into the parking lot to calm down. I ended up crying myself. I wiped my tears and went back in to speak with a supervisor/manager. Of course when I asked for one, Kate M. said she was the only one to speak with. I then calmly told her I was very insulted, offended, and even hurt by her unnecessary comment about my son. I felt it was very inhumane to call any person, let alone a child, wild. Never once did she apologize, all she said was that she didn't know what I wanted from her. She then proceeded to state, "That based on the way your son was acting, we probably would not have felt comfortable allowing you to adopt any way." She made this statement speaking on behalf of Champaign County Humane Society, though it seemed more like a personal opinion. I feel it is wrong of her to make an opinion and judge my son and I without even speaking to us or knowing us, and then allowing that opinion to interfere with her job. She was not going to allow me to adopt a cat because of her personal opinion of my three year old son. This was my first visit to Champaign County Humane Society and all I can say is I hope they do not condone their employees and volunteers to treat customers this way. I will also be filing a complaint with the shelter manager and board of directors. read more
