I really want to love this feed store. I have tried to shop there for over a decade, off and on again, but every time I stop in, I am so disappointed. The staff is not particularly friendly, and while helpful, they leave one feeling as if they are an inconvenience or just plain dumb. The last time I was in, I had some questions regarding specific food for our puppy who needed, per our vet, a food that was more grain-forward, and the girl kept showing me high protein brands. When I questioned her again, she looked at her colleagues and rolled her eyes. It is not unreasonable to expect a feed store to have alternative diet options than just grain-free dog food and treats, especially at the price range they in which they are offering their products. What's more, puppy foods do come in more than just chicken, even in brands than what they offer. I went to another store, who offered to help me order it, and when I reached out to the actual company, they sent me my first bag for FREE! To be a local, small business owner is hard, I get it, but if you continually reject your neighbors, who want to shop at your business, we will just choose to go somewhere else. On another occasion, I was in line behind an older woman, presumably in her late 60's, who was inquiring about a job, she had completed an application, and had some questions. I was not in a hurry, was not upset, and had not expression to indicate that I was bothered - quite the contrary! The young girl at the service counter was so incredibly rude to this woman, snapped answers to the applicant, rolled her eyes, sighed loudly, and showed very visibly her impatience. The applicant walked out, hopeful. The cashier then handed the application to another woman who had walked up, who just slid it into a folder under the desk, and filed it. They both apologized profusely to me for the inconvenience and "bother," to which I replied, it is not a crime to seek employment. I explained that I was not in a hurry, and that we all should show kindness to those who are desperately seeking employment at this time of year. I did note that day that there are no older folks working there, and really no one of diverse background. It is all young girls. Strange really. Anyway, I realized that day, that this is not really a place I feel I want to do business, especially when every time I go in, I do not feel welcome to shop, to ask questions, or think they even appreciate me as a consumer. We love Prairieland Feeds SO MUCH!! We have two doggies and three cats, and we find everything we need there. I get happy the moment I enter the place. They greet you right away, and they always offer assistance if you need guidance. I like to go there for my wild bird needs as well. There's a nice assortment of feeders, feed, suet, and bird baths. Today I purchased a cooling mat for my outdoor cat, a toy for him, and some treats and biscuits for our dogs. I love that they use old-school paper grocery bags if you need a bag. Prairieland Feeds is my favorite place to go to get supplies for our animal friends. read more

5/5 stars. I've been interested in visiting Prairieland Feeds since we moved to the area a few months ago. We finally stopped in today, specifically to check-out their dog supplies. Wow! There's so much more to Prairieland than pet supplies. I'm sure I squealed a little when I saw everything. Beautiful Adirondack chairs lined the outside of their building, giving it a Cracker Barrel-esque feel. Upon entering they had some amazing BBQ grills on display, as well as BBQ utensils and supplies. Great Father's Day gifts! It was sensory overload for me as I wasn't quite sure where to look. They have a plethora of gifts items in stock; for the pet lover in your life and even those who don't have pets. They had a nice little JR Watkins display and many other cool items that were wonderful to look at, but sadly not it my budget. We slowly made our way over to the dog beds and dog supply aisles. You really have to look everywhere because they have tons of awesomeness all over the place; especially around the checkout area. I found the prices on most of their dog treats to be pretty competitive and they had a nice selection of the brands I always buy. I purchased several bags of treats that I know our dog has never had the pleasure of eating, as well as stocked up on some goodies that I know he eats. Great price on Pill Pockets for those pet parents who use them. Their prices on dog crates were fair, too. They seem to sell the iCrate brand, as does Amazon, but Prairieland's prices are just as good. I spotted some nice higher-end dog food brands like FROMM and lightly browsed the dog food. Our pup is on a vet prescription diet, so there's no point in us buying some of the fun, high quality varieties sold here. Dog supplies that aren't edible are also varied. They sell a little bit of everything from toys and travel items to meds and grooming supplies. A small number of items from many of my favorite brands are in stock...this must be a sign. Nice cat department. Many, many bird supplies. All of the bird supplies made me think about taking up a new hobby---birdwatching, perhaps? We didn't even venture over to the other side of the store where the equestrian items are sold, so I can't recall what else that side of the store has to offer. I'll be back to investigate. I primarily buy our dogs necessities online, but I'm totally coming back to Prairieland to browse around. Some of the items in the store have "CCHS Wishlist Item" on them. An excellent way to give back to the community. Kudos to whomever designs their floor displays. They have many attractive things to look at. Really, Prairieland reminds me of everything I love about a specialty pet store (think Kriser's or Bentley's from the Chicagoland area) and Blaine's Farm & Fleet/Theisen's (if that makes any sense). You certainly aren't walking into a Petco or Petsmart which I really appreciate. They also carry my favorite greeting card brand of all-time: Avanti. Very friendly staff working. We were welcomed right as we walked in. If you're looking for unique visit Prairieland---they aren't JUST for pets. IMO, Prairieland is one of the best speciality stores in the Chambana area and the BEST pet store. read more

I bought a cute little hummingbird feeder from Praireland feeds...but when it didn't attract hummingbirds, I tried to take it back..but they would not take it back since they do not take anything used. I only used it a few times..and washed it up...but they said I had to contact the manufacturer for a return, but the manufacturer said to go to the retailer first. So..just be careful if you want to buy anything there, because even though they say a thirty day return,,,it really isn't that. I understand in theory why they wouldn't want to take back a used hummingbird feeder, but I found out Lowes' doesn't have that policy, so next time I shop for something there I am going to be very careful...or go to one of the big box stores or amazon instead. read more

Dis place is the best. They got all the healthy, super premium foods to keep my dog looking so shiny, fit, and fly, and the prices are much cheaper than chain retail stores, like petsfart. Sometimes you will catch domesticated wild animals in the store that owners bring in. My dog got to met a pet raccoon and squirrel here once. read more

Great selection of dog toys and treats for dogs who are heavy chewers. My black lab can take apart any toy in seconds but the hard plastic Kong that dispenses treats when you knock it over just the right way has been barrels of fun for my pup. The gorilla stick hard wood chews that won't splinter are good for hours of gnawing entertainment. They leave a little mess but my dog loves them. There are some other hard plastic chew toys that he can only dent but not get any pieces to swallow and that are flavored to keep him interested. We always get our dog food here. Been going here for years. Employees are exceptional. Super nice. The price of food is actually cheaper than Amazon for most products that we buy and we like to pick up treats for our dogs when we stop buy. Pay attention to their annual pet fair that is normally in the fall. You can load up. I think you can also buy gift cards that week and then use them for the future. Its incredibly important to support local businesses like this place. read more

Praireland Feeds is a million times more pleasant than PetSmart--simply walking in the door will tell you this. I find the Champaign PetSmart location somewhat...depressing. It's like walking into a warehouse. That's no fun. Walking into Praireland Feeds is like passing through a magical portal to a lovely shopping-land where the potential to totally spoil your pet is present around every corner. Ok, so competition aside, Praireland Feeds is a nice store. There are big signs hanging from the ceiling, so it's easy to find what you're looking for. The shelves are densely packed with all manner of goodies (I have a dog, so I pretty much just wandered around the dog section). They have a diverse selection of dog foods, ranging from chow to premium. Prices seemed reasonable, about on par with the big box stores (mainly comparing to PetSmart, since places like Wal-Mart definitely don't carry premium brands such as Wellness). I was specifically looking for Spot's Stew, which they don't carry, but they have many other high quality brands to choose from. My dog is a crazy chewing beast (at only 10 pounds, you'd be surprised by her destructive abilities) so I also checked out their selection of chew-toys while I was there. They sell antlers by the ounce! Pretty awesome. I bought a small one for my pup and it cost $1.27 ($1.99/oz.). She loves it--and actually has not been able to destroy it yet. Overall, I like this store...the staff were friendly, the shop is brightly lit and cheery, and they have a nice selection of pet products. I love this store! They offer a wide variety of high quality products for very reasonable prices. I live a fair distance away and with six dogs and a cat, it's definitely worth the drive! The customer service is amazing! They also sell a variety of gift items that range from Doug and Melissa items for small children, to items for Papillon fanciers, to people who love horses, and even for people who like to camp/grill out. Your leashed dog is welcome to visit, and if you have questions about products, they don't just say "I don't know " (with a tone of "I don't care "), they spend the time to find out whatever you need to know. As you can see from every other review on here, a dissatisfied customer simply doesn't exist at this business, which is why I drive so far out of my way to support them!!! read more

Not cheap, but best selection of wild bird food. Only place that carries millet by the 50 lb. bag and striped sunflower (that I have seen, anyway). Bought shelled peanuts and a really nice Droll Yankees feeder on sale. I also ride, and I checked out the equestrian section. It was very limited, but could work in a pinch. It doesn't look like any of the other reviewers are horse riders, so that might be part of why I disagree so strongly about how great this place is. The staff was very nice, but the selection for riders wasn't very great. They have a wide variety of types of items (horse feed, boots, saddles) but very little variety of brands and prices within each type. I went to Prairieland to get a pair of English paddock boots. They only carried a few brands, but do carry Ariat, which is what I was looking for. They had four different Ariant paddock boots--two in the lower price range (zippered and laced) and two in the upper price range. I found some boots that would work for me at a reasonable price, but I was disappointed that there weren't more brands or variety to compare. That being said, as far as I know this is the only store in town that still carries English gear, so I'm grateful for that! Just don't go expecting a lot of variety for English riders. read more

I love this pet store ! They are extremely helpful and offer wonderful foods for your pets there . It's always clean there and they have a great selection ! All of the employees are very nice and as soon as you walk into the door they are greeting you . I use to go to petsmart till I started coming here . I don't think I will ever buy pet food from petsmart ever again because this place offers great foods for a great price ! My friend adopted a kitten from the Humane Society, and on their rec. we went to Prairieland to get him fully accessorized. I'd always gone to the big-box stores, but this place flat-out rocks. The staff are not only friendly and knowledgeable, but easy to find and available when you need them. The prices are great for a locally owned store, and they even have some helpful "test cats" to try out the toys on. I'm never going back to Petsmart again! read more

5 stars for the store itself. I love it and we are very lucky to have it in the 217 area. Minus 3 to the rude girl with a pony tail and dirty blonde hair working 11/5/2014 in the dog food section. Came in to inquire if they *by chance* had kittens for adoption and to ask if they would in the future as my grandmother recalled seeing an ad about in the News Gazette a few months back. It was a simple question and I got a smart ass look and comment and she reacted as if I was an idiot. Of course, referred me to the Humane Society, which is obvious, but how dare I ask or inquire about something to someone who works there?! /sarcasm Now I don't feel like I can ask *any* questions there knowing that I'll be treated that way. I went here on a recommendation from a friend. Right when I walked in the door, they greeted me, which was nice. The atmosphere is also cute and cabin-y and pleasant. Definitely a big step up from Petsmart! I went there on the sole mission of buying two cat carriers. It was nice that they had the carriers on display, then you could get a brand new one from the back. I actually saw the same carrier at Meijer, but I never would have bought it because it was all collapsed and looked way different not put together! The staff was actually the best part of my trip here. I felt kind of bad because I was being the cliche annoying customer who asks a million questions, but they were amazing and stuck with me the whole time. They even offered to carry my carriers to the car, and called the manager for me over a price question. They showed me how things clipped onto the carriers and walked all over the store with me. Yes, I really was that annoying haha. Anyways, I just wish I had visited this place sooner since we are moving in a few weeks. I don't know why I go to Petsmart...must be a comfort/familiarity thing! Well I've changed my tune, and I will visit local pet supply stores from now on :-) Prairieland Feeds converted me. Also the location is great compared to Petsmart. You don't have to deal with the annoying/terrible/worst-traffic-of-your-life like that part of town!! They do need a website though...it redirects to the News Gazette which is kinda weird. read more

My girlfriend and I came here after adopting a cat at the Champaign Humane Society. The staff is great, they are very helpful and accommodating. There are only a few of them though so you may need to approach them for help. The selection is not so great compared to Petco, Petsmart, or Amazon. They have the major brands, they just don't have all the varieties those major brands provide. However, their selection for dog food is on par with the major stores. Pricing is close to the major stores. While maybe half the items are more expensive, it's only by a few bucks. But it does help to buy here at a local store instead of a chain. Plus they have coupons. read more

Great Store! Thorough and varied inventory... I can always find what I'm looking for (and usually some things I'm not looking for). They have a good program where depending on the number of bags of food you buy, you can earn free bags. I have 3 dogs, so that is a big win for me! At one point, they even had a dog trainer on staff and I would occasionally ask her questions. All staff is knowledgeable and friendly. A tad overpriced on SOME things, which is why I say 4 stars. I've been going there for the past 10 years for all of my dogs needs. They have great customer service that area very knowledgeable. I am convinced that the stock they carry is always rotated (unlike the big box stores) and if you do have a problem with their food, they will return it for something different. I wouldn't consider going anywhere else but Praireland Feeds. I drive 35 miles to get there and it's always well worth the trip. read more

And same thing again tried to order some supplement for my horses and i never recieved a phone call and i called and talked to them and of course oh yea we will order it for ya and never got a call back! Staff is always extremely friendly and willing to go out of their way to help customers. Will custom order food and other products if they do not carry it normally. When you walk into the store things are clean and orderly and people are always available to help. They sell some of the freshest and most inexpensive products in town. They are definitely a place anyone in Champaign area should visit if they have pets. read more

Great customer service. Every time i come here someone greets me as i walk in the door and asks if i found everything ok. I mainly by my dogs food from here. Some brands have a rewards program with them so if you buy x amount you get one free. :) I believe the cost of the food is very reasonable if not cheaper than your standard pet store. The girls that worked there seemed very snotty. Anytime I asked any of them a question, they acted as if I was a burden. I used to order my dog food from there, it was never there when it was promised. There were two times when they had forgotten to order it and suggested I tried one of their other in stock foods. My dog has many of allergies and her tummy only tolerates the food I have been given her, so obviously trying another food wasn't worth the risk of making my dog very sick. Every time I came in there it would be one excuse after another. Finally I came to my senses and started to order my food online (It was way cheaper and always delivered on time!)
