To be sure, a dentist office is comprised of ordinary people who deserve kindness and respect. Any normal exchange with the front office staff should center on patient care. So it's both disappointing and unsettling to find people entrusted with a visible role in a medical office who seem to operate with an inappropriately personal, almost singular motivation to intimidate and gate keep. I should have asked around or read critical reviews. I visited the office but would have preferred to inquire by email. I had no intention of engaging the staff beyond a brief introduction, was already exiting the office when I was confronted by the office manager. What followed was a bizarre encounter that had absolutely no place in a professional medical office. A sign of a professional office is when staff are conditioned to approach conflict, perceived or otherwise, with decorum and care. This is doubly so when office staff is responding to simple inquires, signing for packages or any instance where staff is not being verbally abused by a visitor or asked to act in a manner that isn't in the best interest of the office. The office manager asked me to reenter the office and incited a confrontation. I was an in-and-out patron, making no demands to be seen or heard. I am honestly not sure how I kept a measured tone throughout but I deescalated the behavior on the part of the office manager and staff. I was spoken to by the office manager with a mixture of loud over speech and condescension, likely with the misguided belief that I would simply concede and leave the office. The office staff communicated with contrived business tones and gestures to make a scene yet simultaneously led with a victim's narrative that my presence in the office was the sole issue. If you've ever had a unpleasant encounter in a fast food restaurant, then you understand. The office manager seemed guided by her own feelings of anger and insecurity; she incited a conflict, then refused to speak like a petulant child and abruptly stormed off. It's so odd. I think the staff try to operate at the level needed to support a medical office. I observed, firsthand, the staff making the effort (at first) to appear professional and competent. Therein lies the problem. While this level of service may be adequate for the fast food industry or DMV, it is disturbing and embarrassing to see in a medical office. I can only pity a staff who can so quickly abandon the simple mission- just be kind to visitors. Proper screening at the hiring stage, training, and accountability for front office staff whom are highly visible to patients truly matters. I am guided by the tact and judgment on display from the day I set foot in the building, to the moment I feel confident to sit down in the dentist chair. I cannot fathom how such a glaring misstep could go unchecked in a medical office. If given a choice to use this practice again, I would sooner tie individual strings from 32 knobs to every tooth and let bystanders slam the doors. THERE WERE SIGNS BEFORE THAT SIGN Convenience and proximity is not the same as personable professionalism. Most reviews boast the practice is close to public transportation. I think I need to demand a little more for myself, beyond proximity. And by just asking questions, I learned late that Champion Dentistry always seemed out of place in this neighborhood. The medical office hovers among private residences as a welcome anomaly because everyone needs a dentist, right? A provider providing services to an everyman community. Yet Champion Dentistry proves not every business strikes a healthy cord with the very neighborhood it should serve. Champion Dentistry is located on 63rd street but is not a member of this neighborhood. What do I mean? A core demonstration of good business practice is a business's ability listen to the people it serves (i.e. the neighborhood which surrounds it). The new sign. Allegedly Champion Dentistry lobbied passionately to erect the highly contested LED neon sign, requesting signatures- in large part- from people who don't closely reside in the neighborhood as a show of moral support. Despite the pleas of neighbors to consider how truly garish and disruptive the sign would be to the rest of the residents, it looms. What's more, I wonder if Champion Dentistry realizes the poor impact the signage may have on their brand? I drove past it today. Yes, I took issue with the practice's poor customer service but that sign is childlike and silly. Judgement and optics for a business genuinely matter. If you want to glean an understanding of Champion Dentistry at its core: tone-deaf, disconnected to the community, look no further than the sign spewing neon LED brightly on the corner of 63rd and Malvern. If this was an attempt to set Champion Dentistry apart from the rest of the neighborhood, bravo. You have the masses attention. After reading reviews on Champion Dentistry, I decided to give them a try. I must say I was not disappointed. The office itself offers a pleasant soothing ambience and family atmosphere. I received a warm welcome from Charmaine and Connie, who were truly awesome. Dr. Champion is truly a gem. He rakes his time to explain what has to be done and he has the patient's best interest. Terrible! I went there to get a teeth cleaning & xray. They told me how bad were wisdom teeth were & that they wouldn't even take them out. They told me to go to an oral surgeount immediately. Once I found one to go to they refused to send my xrays over. They told me it would be $380 to send them. Which I've now been told by other doctors how illegal that is to withhold my xrays from me. They also tried getting me to come in for 3 more cleanings before fixing a filler on my tooth. They total they wanted to charge me was $500 just to fix a filling on a tooth. BEWARE!!! Champion dental diagnosed me with over $10,000 worth of unnecessary work. 2nd and 3rd opinions were shocked by what he over-quoted. Very unprofessional staff used profanity and hung up when my current dentist attempted to obtain my records. The doctor's over-friendly and flamboyant demeanor during the consultarion is meant to distract you from the fact that he is ripping you off. EDIT: in response to the doctor's comment below, the prices for the services suggested were within a normal range. It is the fact that the procedures were recommended in the first place that is the issue. I was given a list of MAJOR surgeries and told while in excrutiating pain and not of clear mind that they were needed. Frenectomy (spelling?), bone graft, tissue graft, 4 crowns etc. After going to 2 other very professional offices it was determined all i needed was localized scaling amd a thourough cleaning...maybe $500...Dr. Champion tried to manipulate and take advantage of me for over $10,000. And he DID say they were procedures done in-office. This man is a liar and a criminal and I will be taking legal action. read more

[[TLDR]] Went to dentist for cleaning. Did not get cleaned. Did get an exorbitant $15,000 diagnosis-and-treatment plan with pressure to put this plan on credit. Got yelled at when attempting to reschedule the incomplete cleaning & decided I'm never going back. [[The Good]] The office was clean, professional, not too difficult to find, and up to date technologically. The employees were kind during my appointment, and Dr. Champion himself is up front and code-switches smoothly in conversation between patient and employees. I appreciated his detailed explanations of the suggested treatment plan and his patience with my questions. [[The Frustrating]] Champion was very highly recommended to me, so I am incredibly disappointed. I ordered a Groupon for a cleaning and made a Saturday appointment in June. At that time, X-rays were taken, after which I was examined and provided $15,000 5-Stage treatment plan. After asking a couple of times to ensure my teeth would be being cleaned during that appointment (because I felt that this cleaning was being intentionally delayed without explanation) I was assured that the hygenist would be in soon to clean my teeth. While waiting, the dentist encouraged me to pursue credit options through the dentist (this is actually a good thing, but a little pushy) as well as to consider CareCredit. Mind you, I came in to have my teeth cleaned..... After twenty minutes or so of waiting, I was informed that the hygienist was going through a personal matter and had to leave, and I was encouraged to reschedule my cleaning. The doctor prescribed antibiotics despite the fact that I am experiencing absolutely no pain in my mouth or gums, the receptionist asked me what antibiotic I wanted and how am I supposed to know that again? It's sitting in my pantry at my primary doctor's recommendation, as I felt that this was an unnecessary prescription of antibiotics. He did also prescribe a toothpaste and mouth rinse, which I appreciated, but decline to use until my teeth have been cleaned due to the warning on these prescriptions that they will stain teeth that haven't been cleaned. [[The Unacceptable]] I called back to reschedule for July, and they didn't know when they would be holding the next Saturday clinic. I attempted to e-mail regarding rescheduling this appointment in August, but I may have responded to an automated email. Today, I called to reschedule this cleaning for September, and the lady literally argued with me about why my teeth weren't cleaned in June "because you have cavities and if they clean your teeth it might cause a toothache" which is absolutely not what I was told at the time. I told her that as well as that I'd be happy to take an Ibuprofen before my cleaning, which needs to be done because I'd like to begin using my Rx toothpaste and rinse. She then proceeded to yell over me to "listen, listen, listen, listen, listen!" as I was explaining that I wasn't using the Rx toothpaste and rinse yet because they WILL STAIN MY TEETH IF THEY AREN'T CLEANED which is literally all I was trying to call to get done. [[The Conclusion]] To the receptionist's credit she did attempt to call me back after I hung up on her while she was yelling at me, but all I said when I answered was that I did not appreciate being treated like a child and would not be coming back. read more

Not only would I not recommend this dentist to anyone, I would like people who are reading this review, to know that the staff is highly unprofessional. I have a friend who stopped in, and had a horrible experience. She knew prior to going in that her insurance did not cover an appointment, but the receptionist persuaded her to come in anyway. So, reluctantly my friend went in. When she got there, the receptionist took her insurance card again and made her fill out paperwork where she had to put her social security number. The receptionist then, handed her card back to her and told her that her insurance was inactive. My friend knew this wasn't true as her insurance still worked elsewhere. As my friend got up to leave, feeling that this had been a complete waste of her time, the receptionist would not let her leave. The receptionist kept insisting that she was trying to be helpful, and asked my friend if she wanted to apply for a credit card so that she could still have the appointment. My friend told her very clearly that she did not want a credit card, and that she had already wasted enough time. She left annoyed, but what happened after she left was completely illegal. Two weeks after she had gone into Champion Dentistry, she received two notices in the mail saying that her credit card applications (which she had not applied for) had been declined. The receptionist had disregarded my friend's refusal to apply for a credit card, and applied for her, requesting an $8,000.00 limit per card. Under no circumstances is it okay for someone to apply for a credit card in your name. Please do not go to this dentist! read more

Yes that is sooo true. I put a premium on general wellness and a healthy body and a healthy mouth go hand in hand. You wouldn't believe that given the challenge I presented as a new patient. Missing teeth, progressive gingivitis: I was a wreck. At Champion Dentistry I was cared for in the most professional and compassionate manner possible: a family environment from start to finish. Everything I saw was so futuristic: laser surgical tools to robotic crown maker. Wow. Doctor Champion himself cools out any dental fears harbored by patients in his way of lightheartedly explaining some aspect of the treatment or maybe with the relaxing music thats on while he'sworking. he presents as someone dental professional that's immediately relatable. I trusted him instantly. Really knowledgeable and pleasant dental assistants.His staff guides you through options to fund your treatment plan which can include financing. I found the office work was the beginning of a program I had to practice at home to support my investment. After a bit others began remarking how great I looked smiling; maybe I grinned a little more. My experience at Champion Dentistry was and continues to be the best. Very unprofessional. Their groupon says they include x-rays in the package - they do not. You need to pay an extra $200+ to get x-rays done. Keep in mind when buying the groupon that it only includes the cleaning and exam, not the x-ray. False advertisement. The staff is not very accommodating either. read more

My husband and I went to dr champion while living in West Philly last year. Even though I didn't have insurance, he insisted on replacing all of my "old" fillings and burning off chunks of my gums without ever explaining why. This was all because I wanted a mouth guard because I grind and clench my teeth. It took about 6 months of work, all the while claiming it was so the guard would fit and protect my teeth properly. When I told him I was moving, he suddenly procured my mouth guard which had been ready for months. But wait, they took a mould of my mouth BEFORE replacing all the fillings and giving me a cap. They also persuaded me to take part in their "payment plan" which is a Citi healthcare card with 23% APR claiming I would pay "25$ a month". I will never pay it off, it's like my teeth have student loans. Also, I have cracked at least two of the teeth he "fixed"; one was removed and the other is infected for the holidays. Don't be swindled by the nice office and friendly demeanor of the staff like I was. read more
