I love this restaurant and ordering their orange chicken. The workers are very friendly from just walking to the first desk to order and to its waiters. I also just love the buildings architecture, from the incredibly crafted benches to the fancy chandeliers. I do say, it is kind of pricey here but it is worth it. I don't think other places make orange chicken as good as Chang. Also the days they are open are kind of wierd compared to other places. read more

This was an impromptu stop on our way back from filming a movie in Menominee, WI. The food was hot and fresh and also very fast. The place was busy, yet we felt attended to. I've given this place multiple chances because people kept telling me to try it again, and after the fourth time, yes, fourth time, I can finally say I'm done. The sushi is some of the worst I've had. We've tried the Chico sushi, the Philadelphia roll multiple times, and even some of their signature rolls, hoping something would stand out. Nothing did. The quality and flavor were consistently disappointing every single time. We also ordered the sesame chicken, the General Tao, and their chicken and vegetable. The sesame chicken and General Tao literally tasted the same. Different names, same bland sauce, same overall flavorless experience. Even the chicken and vegetable lacked seasoning and tasted just as uninspired. There is simply no real flavor in anything we tried. On top of that, it's overpriced for the quality you're getting. The service is only halfway decent, and while the ambiance is cute, it does not make up for how awful the food is. After four tries, I can confidently say it's not worth it. One star. read more

I can't comment on the service because I got takeout while staying at the hotel across the street, but the Chinese food was the worst I have ever had in my life. The egg rolls were chewy and tasted weird. The fried rice was bland and might as well have been instant rice. The sweet and sour chicken was just okay. Need to update your hours to "closing at 8:30pm" not 9pm! Website and Yelp list closing at 9. Got there at 8:33 and was told the kitchen was closed. Lots of people still in the place still eating. I get it... staff wants to go home, but I drove a ways to get there and was really let down they wouldn't at least offer something quick or limited menu. The food here used to be delicious & rather affordable (pre-covid era). Not anymore. My husband and I were going to order drinks here & they are outrageously over priced. Just under $10 for a long island iced tea in an 8oz glass that is filled with ice. Same with a margarita. You could buy an entire bottle of alcohol for that much! Now, we can afford to pay, but there's just something icky about a place that will try an pull highway robbery on their customers. It explains why their very nice looking bar area is all but empty of customers. Now for the food. The 1st problem is the menu. There are absolutely no pictures to see anything. It looks like someone thought it was a good idea to condense their menu into 2 pages, ommitting pictures of food, prices of many items, etc. We had to look up pictures online in order to order because we haven't been in for about 2 years. The average entree price here is $17 per person, not the $10 they post online. The honey sesame chicken is bland and flavorless. We originally wanted fried rice, instead of regular rice- but the upcharge was $3 each! FOR RICE. The thing with the rice here, so people know too. If you place an order online for 2 entrees- every single time they will jip you on the rice. They will send 1 take out container to be shared. lol Anyway, with the entrees- this USED TO BE a delicious dish...but now it somehow has zero flavor. Next, they don't even add in any vegetables with the rice on the side. I with the latest experience, I think I am now over this place. $67 not including a tip for 2 lemonade, 2 honey sesame chicken & a take out of soup. that costed $15. With the soup, they give you a container that they claim is 5 servings- but it equates to 2 meager servings in the real world. Then to get it home and it sucks in flavor too...runny, no sesame oil flavor, and plain bland with barely any egg "ribbons". Thanks to this experience, I will learn to make it online. Thankfully Google has 5 recipes to ensure my success..I will never pay for this garbage food again. Keep your nicely decorated building- because you haven't much more going for you. I can only imagine that the only reason this place is still in business because they are getting the 2 hotels customers coming in across the street. This is a nice Chinese restaurant with great ambiance. I got takeout on Friday and wish we had time for a proper sit down meal! FOOD- it's not the authentic Chinese food I was expecting and the dishes were heavy on sauce as other places in the area. The Kong Pao shrimp was tasty but drowning in sauce. The sesame chicken and General Tao chicken looked almost identical in that dark tangy sauce. I thought for the higher prices they'd somewhat resemble the Chinese food I had in LA. SERVICE- the staff was all very polite and helpful in taking my orders and they even offered plates and utensils for my to-go order. If you're looking for authentic Chinese food, this is not the right place but you'll have a nice American Chinese meal. read more

Stayed across the street while traveling on business and decided to get some Chinese food before getting back to a long night of work. I looked on Yelp and saw that there was a place right across the street that looked OK, so I went for it. I had no idea these guys had sushi when I went in, and it just so happened I was hankering. The bartender told me they had a special new item called a "Sushi Burger" which consisted of chopped sushi tuna in a "patty" on a "bun" made out of sushi rice with seaweed salad and yum yum sauce. Sounded strange, so as usual I got it. I also got the Miso soup and a spicy salmon roll. The Miso was good and the Sushi Burger was tasty and also very reasonably priced for how big it was! I really dug their sushi rice and while I don't have seaweed salad enough to know for sure, it seemed fresh and gave the burger a nice crunch. Their yum yum sauce was super good and really kicked off the other high quality ingredients just right. The Tuna also tasted very fresh. But the star here for me was the humble Spicy Salmon roll: the roll was your standard size or just slightly bigger, and it was nothing but rice, wrapper, a dollop of spicy sauce, and oh yeah - a giant piece of super firm, super fresh, super delicious salmon. I was really surprised when I first bit in at how fresh it was, and how much they gave me. I mean, this is Wausau for goodness sake! It really stole the show from the Sushi Burger, where the tuna was chopped and therefore just couldn't compete. During my meal, every employee in the area asked me about the sushi burger because it was a new thing for them and I was apparently their guinea pig. I had pleasant, sushi-related conversations with the bartender, the manager, a server, and the Sushi chef himself. It wasn't a perfect day for an example because I was early for dinner on a Wednesday, so there wasn't too much else for everyone to do but make me feel welcome. That said, I would give high marks for service as well, at least in off-peak times. Great sushi in Weston. Who knew? If I'm ever back in town, I'm going to beeline straight here. We went for lunch and got to look through both lunch/dinner menus and the sushi menu. First impression was a very nice and clean establishment. Nice dark colors class it up. * Silverware was dirty, upon alerting our server she made some weird comment about it being an extra that she wouldn't charge us for. * The ice...is so bad. Get no ice in your drink. It tastes so strongly of chlorine and chemical. Got many different drinks and only the most sugary drink could hide the harsh unappealing taste. *Phoenix sushi roll - supposed to be cooked shrimp in it but not only did it smell like funky fish, it tasted like funky fish. Promptly spit out and informed server. Server said "wish I owned the place so I could take it off your bill, but I don't so..." * General Tso Chicken - very tasty but not spicy at all. Excellent breading on the chicken! *Chicken Lo Mein - wish we ordered more to share, noodles perfect and chicken was nice size * Chicken Bento Box - this was so much fun! The dumplings were superb! Crispy chicken strips were delicious! Even the fresh slaw concoction and cabbage mixture under dumplings was amazing!!!! I could order a whole bowl of just that!!! We can't wait to try all of the Bento boxes (except for the sushi one)! * Egg drop soup - honestly it was so different than any egg drop soup we've ever had. It was way thicker with egg but the broth tasted like straight up chicken broth from a can. Fine but not great. * Won ton soup - excellent broth, we're suckers for green onion in our soup so this was a win in our book! Yum! Highly recommend. We ordered takeout on a Friday (9/27/19) 1. Hot & Sour Soup -- 4 1/2 stars. Nice job. 2. Orange Chicken -- 4 stars. My two dining companions and I all liked it. 3. Two pork egg rolls -- meh. Maybe they lost their flavor in transit. 4. The primary reason for my overall 2-star ranking is the 1/2 star for appallingly uninspiring Bourbon Chicken. It was gray in appearance and tasted like, literally, ... nothing. It clearly wasn't fresh. Unseasoned chicken pieces cooked at home would be far more appetizing, I commented to my spouse, "We ordered this from a place that specializes in food preparation?" It was something a restaurant ought be embarrassed to serve and charge money for; consider calling it "Day-old Gray Chicken" on the menu, so we at least know what were getting. read more

Local resident, we only order Chinese food from Chang Garden when desperate because it is over priced Panda Express on a good day but closer to us than Panda...whatever Sysco products they can use. Have been sick often from sushi and will never trust that menu again.  Ingredients are pushed to expiration date standards and when questioned management doesn't care.  If you want good sushi go to Wasabi in weston and if you want better Chinese try Peking downtown wausau read more

Pros: Comfortable atmosphere (not your average Chinese place), yummy food, good for groups Cons: Service was good, but slow at times I stopped in here with family for an early evening dinner on a recent Sunday. Seeing as it was 4pm, the place was understandably quiet. We were seated promptly by a friendly hostess, and our server was with us quickly. He was friendly, and made some good recommendations for food and drink. If you're interested in sake, buy a bottle instead of a glass. Our party of 6 started out with 2 pu pu platters. These were great, and fed 3-4 people. Then we each ordered a main dish and ended up slitting them up between everyone. With appetizers, one dish per person ended up being a lot of food! We all left stuffed to the brim with yummy Chinese. My personal favorite dishes were the beef and broccoli and mango chicken. All in all, this was a great place to have a dinner. My only criticism is that our waiter was not as attentive as I though he should be for how empty the restaurant was. My glass sat empty for a while several times, and he didn't notice it when he came by. Not a deal breaker by any means! read more

Why five stars? Taste, quality of ingredients, variety, ambiance, service. Overall, very satisfied with the experience...... A Chinese restaurant (American Chinese) with good service, unhurried and pleasant atmosphere, and great food! These three things aligning for a Chinese restaurant is like the eclipse happening...OK, maybe not that rare. My friend and I had the hot and sour soup, honey spare ribs, sweet and sour pork-shrimp, and the Mongolian beef. Everything looked and tasted delicious. They did not slack on the ingredients and the soup had an abundance of the wood ear mushrooms. The portions were generous and definitely could've fed at least three people. (Aside: the bathroom is really clean-always a good sign). And just across the way from our hotel, A+.............. Good for a quick bite to eat or for out of town guests. Will be back! read more

I was in town again over the holidays and have been meaning to write this review. First off I just want to say BRAVO to the owners for their deco choices. I absolutely did NOT expect to find such a grand looking restaurant in such a small town. I have been to their downtown location and already thought that it was beautifully decorated, but this new location is hands down the nicest Asian themed restaurant I have ever dined in. I actually ate there twice on my visit, once for chinese and the second for Teppenyaki. The Chinese food was very consistent with the downtown location. I had the General Tsao's Chicken. The sauce was tangy, slightly spicy but not too overly spicy, and not too thick and gooey. Very tasty. I am not sure if their prices have changed but I didn't pay $14.00 like a previous poster mentioned his costing. The General Tsao Chicken I ordered cost $9.95. I actually thought their prices were surprisingly on the low end. My dining companion ended up ordering the Hunan Shrimp which was also excellent. It was served with jumbo shrimp, and the Hunan sauce was very authentic tasting compared to what we are served at most Chinese restaurants. My second trip I came solely for teppenyaki, a very pleasent surprise to see that they offered this. We made a reservation for this and I would recommend doing so. I have always loved Teppenyaki (AKA Hibachi), and lately I have had problems finding a good one in my area. It's pretty much like having a show attatched to your dinner and it's fun to experience with a group. I ordered the filet and it was very tender and yummy. The teppenyaki chef was quite skilled. Fire volcano, and a few tricks with the veggies. The amount of food they give you is impressive, way more than I could ever finish myself. Final verdict, great all-around restaurant experience. Great place to take a date or group, but stick with the downtown location if your looking for a place to take the kids. Weston is lucky to have such a grand dining establishment with such a variety of cuisine. I will be looking forward to my next trip! read more

OK... first up... I gave the new Chang Garden in Weston 5 stars, when it really only deserves 4 1/2 for now... but they've only been open for a couple of days and the establishment will be considered the best in the entire Wausau area shortly. Chang Garden Weston, is the sister establishment of the main restaurant in downtown Wausau. But it is by far the chicest, most elegant restaurant in the area. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful! From the beautiful sushi bar, to the hand carved wooden booths, to the Japanese style grill tables. The food is also extremely delicious and the sushi is the freshest in the city. The only area where they have a few bugs to work out is the service, which is to be expected in such a large, new restaurant. Food was a little slow coming out of the kitchen, but they will have it worked out I'm sure in a week or so (I visited on their 3rd day open, on a Friday, around 5 pm.) On my order was the Sashimi Dinner ($26.00) and it came with more than a dozen types of Sashimi, Miso Soup, Rice and Salad. For the grade and selection of Sashimi, it is an excellent bargain. My table also had the General Tso Chicken... it was cooked perfectly and enough to serve more than two (around $14.00). I also tried the Steak Bento Dinner (around $17.00), there was no Bento box, but it did come with a bento steak roll, soup, salad and rice. Chang Garden Weston, will be considered the Gold Standard when it comes to Asian restaurants, and one of the top two restaurants in general, in the Wausau Metro area... call ahead to make a reservation. read more

DECOR: Creative with a vintage feel despite the new exterior. SERVICE: Chris was fantastic, some of the best restraurant service I've ever had. SUSHI: Try the Ocean Delight. Creative and so flavorful. Make we wish we'd ordered more sushi instead of that other dish. ENTREE: Don't have the Ginger Chicken from the Chef Specialists. Bland doesn't begin to describe it but i don't want to knock the restaurant for my inability to pick the right dish. TEA: Get the oolong, it was yummy! LOCATION: If you're at the hospital with loved ones and need an alternative to the cafeteria, be sure to get on Hwy X and go north. Quick drive and well worth it. I agree with TH, first to review, that this place is the most elegant restaurant in the area. It certainly has the biggest "Wow!" look in the area. It may be that the Wright Place on 6th has more of what I would call "refined elegance". Oh well on to my review. I have been there twice now and I do love there Sushi and Sashimi. However I consider there fare to lack a little spark or uniqueness. I think that the Mandarin has more interesting, tasty specials, than Chang Garden at this point in time. One of my favorite dishes is General Tso's chicken. I give it 4 stars at the C.G. I will not argue however with the person who gives Chang Garden 5 stars or says it is the best. It certainly has an elegant, friendly, relaxing atmosphere. I suspect that a survey of children would reveal that the atmosphere there is a little intimidating to children. read more

I stopped into Chang Garden for lunch over my Easter holiday. I was pretty excited because I've heard so many great things about Chang Garden from others on Yelp, Twitter and my friends who live in the area. I can easily say Chang Garden is the most beautiful Chinese restaurant I've ever dined at. The decor is truly wonderful. Wooden tables, very open and light atmosphere. The entire decor just oozes quality and attention to detail. This is something I'd expect in Chicago or Minneapolis, not Wausau. If you're looking for upscale, this is it. I ordered up some hot and sour soup to start with some Asian ribs. The hot and sour soup was excellent. Seemed like a good quality mixture and proper melding of ingredients-- The Asian ribs came glazed in a sauce I can best describe as part sweet and sour sauce and part sweet barbecue sauce. Excellent quality meat and the bark on the ribs was bursting with flavor! My entree' was the schezuan beef extra spicy with steamed rice. The vegetables were grilled perfectly and the beef was filled with flavor. It was definitely spicy as I requested. The rice was done perfectly and mixed well with the dish. Chang has quickly become my favorite Chinese hot spot. I love a good hole in the wall joint like you find in many cities, but for flare, class and outstanding food... Chang Garden is a home run!
