I hate leaving bad reviews, but our experience was awful. We have ordered takeout several times and have been happy, so we decided to eat in on a Saturday night a few weeks ago. We were seated immediately, but service was very slow. I ordered a bento box and my partner ordered a chicken dish. When my box came out 20 minutes later, our server informed us that they were out of what my partner ordered. He picked something else and they left me with my food. His then came 20-30 minutes later. By that point my meal was cold. His was also sloppily put together. I saw similar things happening to other couples. There was no apology, or offer for a discount. I haven't been this disappointed with service or a dining experience in a long time. read more

This place! The sushi was amazing good. We had the Angry Lobster and the Mind Eraser. Both were unique and miles above the typical rolls you'll find most everywhere else. The boba, dumplings, and yakitori could use some work but the sushi absolutely made up for it. A must try. The service was fantastic, I wish I got the girls name so I could ask for her next time. I came from California where there are so many excellent sushi places so when I moved to Wisconsin, I was worried I would not be able to find another one. But thankfully, we found Masa, which is absolutely amazing. I love all the rolls, and everything is very fresh. I was in the area and stopped by for lunch. I was pleased to see they had lunch specials, and they were priced reasonably as well. I came in on a Monday afternoon, and there were a lot of people. If there are a lot of people, you can guess that the food is good. I wasn't disappointed after the visit. Service was quick and food was tasty. If you have a degradation kink, this is the place for you! The staff couldn't loathe you more for walking in! Coming from Seattle I was really missing sushi restaurants. I was excited when I found this one and very hopeful going in. However, the sushi quality is pretty terrible. I feel as if there is not one dish that isn't overpriced. It's egregious in some cases, considering I've had better sushi from the grocery store... If that weren't enough, the staff is ALWAYS rude. They make you feel like a burden when you come in and the interactions are extremely off putting. Also, I miss eating otoro as it's my favorite cut. They have had it on the menu for years but each time I ask for it, they don't have it. Once, they had it as a special written on the chalkboard when you come in. I was so excited! Then I asked for it and, you guessed it, they didn't have it. Take it off the friggin menu--PLEASE. I've tried to give them grace and visited several times, just because I'm desperate for sushi. But I won't be visiting here any longer. I refuse to spend $100 to eat gamey fish and get treated like dirt. read more

Ugh - wasn't expecting the same level of quality as I get in Seattle, but this was so lackluster it was barely edible. Our party of 10 got served piecemeal over the course of 30 minutes, so that some were done with their meal before others even got served. I ordered chicken teriyaki, and I was served like a fajita - on a sizzling platter over a bed of onions???? The chicken breast was flat and overcooked - almost no seasoning at all. I enjoyed my solo trip to this place. I had a slight language barrier with an obviously young server, but I chose two vegetarian options that were great. I also had cheesecake for dessert. I was less impressed with that but it was fine. I watched a guy make a beautiful tray of rolls for some sort of celebration- it would have been more impressive with real flowers. But I understand that. Anyway, for a small town this was nice. I have no idea how the actual fish is tho. lol. read more

Actually horrid. Came here to celebrate our wedding and were greeted by a very impatient staff and dreadful food. The sushi was bland and basically just hot mush. The teriyaki chicken was so incredibly bland with a MASSIVE mountain of onion on the bottom of the dish. Side salad was just wet romaine with a couple slices of cucumber on top. Spent $70 on glorified cafeteria food. Came on Mother's Day, in which the waitress ran around passing out flowers to literally every table but ours. Our gift was just some mean side-eye lol. The Wausau area is in serious need of a higher end sushi bar. When I was in high school, there were a few spots in town to grab a California roll, and the sushi scene in Wausau has not evolved much since. Enter Masa - formerly Cherry Berry frozen yogurt and Cold Stone Creamery before that. Masa has remodeled the space nicely. It feels dark yet warm with its blue tones glowing from the suburbs bar throughout the restaurant. The concept of Masa follows the formula of many suburban/small city Japanese restaurants - it is a sushi bar and hibachi grill all in one. I tried their sushi lunch special which comes with either a salad or miso soup. You choose two different rolls with the lunch special, and I chose the chicken tempura roll and avocado peanut (I was not in the mood for fish that day). I took my food to go, and while the drive was short, the sauces smeared all around the container to make for a less than beautiful presentation. Nonetheless, the chicken tempura rolls were tasty and the salad comes with a delicious orange dressing common in American Japanese restaurants. My one suggestion for Masa is to swap out he honey roasted peanuts they use in their peanut avocado roll in favor of plain salted peanuts. This flavor combination was not for me. My boyfriend tried the spicy salmon and tuna rolls, and it looked like the fish was ground up like minced meat. He said the rolls tasted ok, but they weren't very pretty to look at, and were not spicy. So, Masa isn't exactly filling that void in the higher end sushi scene in Wausau in terms of food quality, but I do think it's a step in the right direction for those looking to upgrade from Chang Garden. Next time I will certainly return to Masa to dine in, and will choose a different roll :). At $10, this is a filling lunch at a great deal. read more

I haven't been to Masa in a few years so I went back in 2021 twice. Went in for lunch and found a piece of hair in our food. Had them remake the dish and the dish came out extremely fast. So we were unsure if they took out the hair and gave us the food back or if they made a new dish. Another time went in and ordered their udon noodle soup dish. Broth was super plain. Probably the worst udon I've ever had since I'm a big fan of udon noodles. Would I go back? Probably not. read more

Server was sitting down eating while I was waiting to order, my friend was unable to make it on time so I ordered for her- the waitress served the soup as she was not there and served the entree prior to the friend arriving. Her food got cold. She could have offered to keep it in the window to heat up, but did not. Did not ask how anything was. Pretty great place, the sushi is pretty good and there's plenty of other options for those who don't like to get down on some sush, which is great for me becauseuae I only know maybe 2 people who also enjoy it. Of the two times I've been there once the server spoke fluent English and the second there was a bit of a barrier. Prices are pretty reasonable, the only thing that's truly a negative that I can think of is that it's pretty dimly lit, and not in a warm and cozy way.
