In my opinion, since switching management or ownership chants has lost its authentic feel and taste to the food. I remember years ago when the older Asian gentlemen use to run it. He was very nice. It's almost like a generic version of what Chants use to be. The manager has a very off putting disposition. He's rude, not customer friendly and lord forbid if you're not satisfied with your food or cocktail. He'll go on & on how he know is right because he came up with the recipe. He's very combative. With all the new restaurants and stores this area is really coming up and I tend to come to Hyde Park a lot now. Service was a little slow, but we weren't in any hurry so it was all good. I went with the Piña Colada Martini (delicious), friends went with blue moon beer and the other went with moscule mule. Everyone was happy with their drinks. We only had apps. Tried the Lobster Rangoon and the Lamb somosas. Both were good and we liked the sauces. I enjoyed the live band. Made me feel like we were in New Orleans! I went here for the first time last month. Chant is a really cool spot, and i would visit it again. Ive been there 2 times so far. The decor is beautiful! The first time i went was on a Friday, and there was live music (r&b) and it sounded great! I ordered an Apple Martini and it was strong, so i was impressed!! It was a great time! It was very crowed, and the people were classy. The service was great! The second time that i went, it was on a Thursday,there was no live music, it wasn't many people, and i went for dinner around 9pm. The food was bland with no flavor, so i will never eat here again. Simply a terrible experience. Service was horrific. Food was microwaved from frozen. I live near Chant so wanted it to be good. How wrong I was. When I walked in, my girlfriend and I were greeted by cold servers who asked us to seat ourselves. When we asked to move inside, we were forced to move our glasses and menus ourselves. Service: I had to wave over the servers for even the bare minimums. When we asked for the check, they brought chopsticks instead. When we asked for the check, it took over five minutes to get and at least ten minutes of waving over the server to pay. Horrible service. Food: this was the worst part. The lobster Rangoon had no lobster. The sauce was disgusting. And the calamari was rock hard. Both tasted like they were microwaved. To clarify, the calamari snapped. All of them snapped. And not in a crispy way. More in a wow this is disgusting kind of way. We expressed our disappointment to the server and she offered to order us a new one for takeout. When we expressed displeasure, she never offered to take this off the check even though we barely even touched the food. I've only been here one other time and I feel bad for never really having anything nice to say about this place, but I just don't like it and I won't eat here again. I ordered the Chant Pad Thai with tofu which is listed on the menu as "Chant's version of Pad Thai, with tamarind, ground peanuts, bean sprouts, green onions, and egg with your choice of chicken, beef or tofu." It doesn't have the little icon indicating that it's vegetarian or vegan, but I assumed *that's what you get* that was because there's egg in it. So it comes out and this nauseating smell slaps me in the face, which I thought was my boyfriend's food because he ordered the catfish *something something*. I didn't eat any of it, but I was suspiciously eyeing it, lifting it up and smelling it until I was sure that smell was coming from my own food and not his. I waved down the waiter to ask him how the food was prepared and finally he tells me there's fish sauce in it *what the frack is fish sauce*.... so I had to send it back. The waiter quickly brings out another plate this time prepared with the vegan sauce......naturally the rushed order wasn't cooked properly and the noodles tasted like rubber. I wanted to send it back again, but my boyfriend was complaining about me "complaining" so I just had to sit there and choke down my rubberband pad thai.... Surprisingly good. The menu is mostly standard Thai, and the fusion aspect seems to be getting lost based on the kinds of dishes I see cited in the other reviews. The drink list is way biased towards the super sugary end. It's nearly 2020. The apple"martini" should be dead by now. But, what they do have is pretty good. The house mojito is entirely drinkable. The food does have some spice, ave the black beans are to kill for. I'd eat here again for a full meal and probably like it. I am saying that Chant is just ok, simply because when my mom and I went for dinner, we weren't expecting much. It's Hyde Park, being long time residents who moved away and probably will return at some point, decent dining is also a plus. I am a fan of the ambiance, the bar. The service and the menu could use a little help, and is why I give three stars. Ordered an appetizer (shrimp and veggie tempura) that never showed up. However, the drinks we ordered at the same time and the entrees shortly after, did. After eating my pad thai and my mom nibbling on her tiny portion of duck, my mom was still hungry. (This is where that appetizer would have come in handy.) So she ordered another app instead and seemed to be happy. The waiter did apologize for the loss of the tempura, but did not offer anything else OR at least give a discount of some kind. The place wasn't even crowded to justify it. There was some kind of potato that came with my mom's duck, in a cake form, and it was gross tasting. There are really no other words I'd use to describe it. Kind of like when someone takes days old produce and tries to recreate something better with it...no matter what, though it still tastes old. We passed on the items shown on that odd looking dessert tray and were grateful to have visited Chant on a day where there was no live music. The only music we heard was the screaming cries of an infant who probably should have been in bed. We probably will return once and again, but on my end, it'll be for the drinks. Mark your calendar, bring your mother here next year for mother's day. I have been here for mother's day brunch the last 2 years, and it was awesome. The food was exceptional, which was surprising for an all you can eat buffet. For $26 you got to go to the unlimited buffet and got 1 champagne & lemonade cocktail. I was really impressed with the food because there was a nice range. There was an omlette station, 2 kinds of pancakes, 2 kinds of waffles, sausage, fruit, and strawberry crepes on the breakfast items. There was an incredible salad, amazing salmon, crab rangoon, shui mai, fried rice, scalloped potatoes, green beans. And for dessert there were brownies, cupcakes, yogurt parfaits. This was a nice surprise coming from a visitor from San Francisco. We had the chicken wings which were deep fried then glazed with a sweet sauce for $11 for 9 pieces w slaw. The slaw had no flavor no tang just color. But it was still good. Slaw was totally unnecessary unless they had better flavor contrast. My wife had the fried rice which was a huge portion with about 6 good sized shrimp. Great flavor almost worth the price. But not quite. I had the chicken mole. 3 thighs atop of baked potato slices. We went for dinner before heading off to the Robert Glasper concert. I ordered the wings which were very tasty and had a great tangy taste. I would recommend them as a appetizer. You get 8 wings and your fingers need to be licked when done due to the sauce. I had the Chant salad which I completely destroyed in less than 10 minutes and it wasn't because I was hungry - it was just excellent. It just had a nice crisp clean taste. While I visited from California, the drinks were superb, but the welcoming atmosphere (with the exception of the cool bartender) there was an immediate notice of a 90% disparity in who lives in the community opposed to who worked there. Chant is definitely among the best restaurants in Hyde Park. Although from the outside the place does not look much appealing, the food was a very gratifying surprise! They offer a rather complete menu, mainly Asian-based although the do serve some Jamaican cuisine (or so they claim). Everything we order was delicious and decently priced: 1. Mango-Shrimp Salad was generously served and had a great taste! Definitely worth suggesting! 2. I ordered Thai Chicken Soup and Chant Curry Chicken (Thighs) dish. What I (begrudgingly) ate could be described as fast, safe, suburban American cooking. This felt like mess hall fare. Carrots and potatoes boiled until cuttable, no spices. The chicken thighs are actually bland chicken breast chunks. The entire meal seems rushed, crunchy and unimaginative. While it has perhaps one of the best ambiances in the neighborhood (live music on Fridays nights, comfortable seating, intimacy, no annoying U of C undergrads, great décor), Chant suffers from "53rd St. Syndrome": the overpricing of what is, at the end of the day, hit-or-miss food. Unfortunately, this is a recent development, as the prices used to be more reasonable here. Citing "Bidinflation", perhaps, the entrées now are all over $20, for which you'd better be getting a veritable gobsmack of flavor. My catfish mac-and-cheese was excellent; my companion's drunken noodle, however, was allegedly "something I could've made at home." I tried it: I can confirm this somber diagnosis. I also ordered a mixed drink, the "Chant" Old Fashioned: this, too, was just OK. On top of this, service was decidedly lackluster: we waited for about 15 minutes before our order was even taken. I suppose now I know why they made 18% tipping compulsory... All in all, it is really all too bad, because although I've had pleasant evenings at Chant, the mismatch of the quality of the food and service with the cost now dissuade me from returning. read more

We decided to give Chant another shot after not enjoying our meal a while ago. We've lived in the neighborhood for over a decade and want to do what we can to support good businesses here. We liked the idea of small plates to try a lot of stuff, but were surprised at the prices for them, so we went with the shrimp (in wonton) app, the curried cod, and the salmon. For the price, the food was just not very good. The curry had limited flavor, although it was a big piece of cod. The salmon wasn't particularly tasty either. The shrimp app was as good as I expected, although it was dripping with oil from the fryer and when i bit into it, it squirted all over. That was probably just a fluke. Both entrees has some soggy pieces of asparagus on top that lacked flavor or texture. We wont' be going back any time soon. For that price, i expected a lot more. read more

Maybe a definition of Asian fusion was needed to reset my expectations. Moving on... My sister had the Spinach and Tofu and she loved it! I ordered the Beef Bibimbap. When I ordered I asked the waiter to say it 3 times - really fast. Now you try. :) I was left unimpressed with the Chant's version of the traditional dish of BBQ Korean beef, fried egg, shaved cucumbers, shredded carrots, green onions, bean sprouts, steamed rice, served with a Korean Chili Paste. My fried egg was cooked to the point where it no longer had a yolk. The egg arrived overcooked, dry, flat, slightly crispy and lifeless. The yolk in this dish is one of the best parts that allows it all to blend in. The service was pretty good, but food didn't quite do it for me. I hate to write a negative review given how few dining options are in Hyde Park. However, this is the second subpar experience I've had at Chant. We ordered the Mango Shrimp Salad and got the attention of our waiter after noticing the mangos were frozen. The waiter claimed that they are "fresh", but took the dish back. A few moments later, the general manager, Aldo Rojas, came out and immediately states that we ate more than half the dish, which was not close to the truth (we thought he mustve seen the wrong dish). Aldo then disputes everything we say or suggest and states that the mangos are stored at 30 degrees F (which explains why they were frozen). He also went as far as bringing the dish back out as though he was trying to prove some moot point. As a manager, whose supposedly been there for some time, I would expect some intent to resolve a customer's negative experience, but that doesn't seem to be the case. He also claimed that there was no one to complain to above him. We dediced to pay our bill and leave, since they weren't willing to remake the salad, with or without mangos. After this experience, I definitely won't be returning and dont recommend Chant at all. read more

HOWEVER I came back today with my whole family and every single one of us commented on how bad the food was, especially the Pad Thai. The service was also poor today.
