AZNA is such a great salon, I'm so happy to have stumbled upon this place! It's the new go-to not only for myself but for both my daughters as well. I've been three times now for haircut and blow-dry services with multiple of their stylists who all have been excellent. I'm new to coloring my hair and tried to for the first time today with Jasmin. She was so sweet and patient in answering all my questions, clearly knew what she was talking about when explaining the different options, and ultimately guided me to do a toner, which I love! I already booked my next appointment which says volumes because I've never had a hair salon that I loved so much to do that before walking out the door. Can't recommend AZNA enough! read more

I should have walked out when I saw clumps of hair across the waiting area. I was very specific with the person that cut my hair about not layering the face pieces too short because then they would 'wing' out when not styled. The hair cut I received has harsh layers in the front that not only wing out but have a serious step from one layer to another. Should have trusted my gut. read more

I was very satisfied with my hair cut by Nelo-- though she didn't take off as much as I asked it looks chic and otherwise is great. I would have wanted more off as I originally asked for 3 inches and she then proceeded to reduce it to 1 1/2 inches and ask me by showing me visually without discussing the inches more precisely. Nelo truly is a magician! When I came to her with a tragic hairdo of a botched blonde/green/orange and an uneven cut, she cautioned me that she might not be able to fully redeem it... but I think she was selling herself short! I am so happy that I put my trust in her because she did not give up trying different mixtures to correct the color and it looks amazing! I can tell that she truly value in her work, but also, was so sweet and sympathetic to me the entire (long) visit. I also got to meet the owner, who was very friendly and kind! I wrote the following review in 2017 of Azna Salon and thought it was time for an update. I still love seeing Anita, the owner and manager, every week to have my hair washed and blown dry. She still does an AMAZING job. She blows it so silky smooth every week that no one believes that my hair is wavy in some parts and ringlet-curly in others. Best of all, I never have to touch it all week except to brush it a bit at night and in the morning. By the end of the week it looks as good as it did the day of my appointment. As I mention in the 2017 review below, she took me from dark brown to blonde, blonde, blonde. People stop me and ask who does my hair - usually they are referring to the style and the color. The appointment system is great. As soon as I make an appt, I get an email and text reminding me of the appt and then again the day before and/or the same day of the appointment. Zai, the person who handles the scheduling couldn't be nicer, more personable and more efficient. I like the products she uses on my hair - they never feel heavy or stickly and there is no fragrance, which is my preference. All the rest from my first 2017 review remains true but I have amended the last paragraph as follows : Anaieta stays abreast of all the latest trends, techniques and products so you always feel fashion forward. I really can't compliment her and the staff highly enough. I always feel relaxed and look great when I leave. Three added bonuses: there is 1 hour free underground parking so I dont have to go outside and lots of good magazines [but Anita is so fast, I barely have time to thumb through them] and [ALAS fresh baked chocolate chip cookies are a thing of the past, but not having them is much better for my figure!] FROM 2017 Hi- I have been going to Anaieta (pronounced Anita) the manager of Azna Salon (formerly Backstage) for the past 7 years on a weekly basis for color and blowouts. I saw that the owner recently responded to my review and I feel obligated to respond back. I want to set the record straight: -They are misattributing things to me. I never said anything even close to "I will destroy you". I have no interest in destroying a hair salon. I told them that I would leave a review online (so that others could make an informed decision). A good business should not view leaving a review as a threat. -In another review site and the BBB website, they ascribe malicious motives to me and claim that I only review negatively to get back at businesses. Obviously, as you can see through my Yelp history, I have both positive and negative reviews based on my experiences. I think it very revealing that a business responded so viscerally and personally to a bad customer experience, but of course I leave that to your judgment. -My original review included a picture of the haircut that I got at the salon. It speaks for itself.   That is an objective data point on the quality of the cut. -Unsolicited, they contacted me via text ~2 hours before they posted this Yelp response (not sure how they had my number). I was on vacation and before I could respond to anything, they posted the response without hearing back. My final thoughts: I am a strong believer in consumer advocacy and the use of sites like Yelp that provide consumers data points for informed choices. And I believe it is the mark of a good business to react to customer feedback professionally. That is the only purpose of this review. I want others to decide--based on the picture of my haircut that I shared and my overall experience--if they want to get a haircut here. That is all. I don't want anything from the business--please don't reach out to me or text me again. I don't seek or want compensation--after they stood by the quality of their cut and refused to give me a refund, I rectified the situation by getting another cut elsewhere, at my own expense. read more

06/29/2024 If you're hesitant about visiting Azna Salon, don't. My hairstylist, Zayia, did not disappoint. As someone with long, thick hair, I asked for a butterfly haircut with curtain bangs and left the salon with the most significant security in myself. Zayia is super friendly and gentle with your hair and gives the most excellent advice and support regarding haircuts that shape your face. Zayia made this haircut experience worth every penny, and I will visit again. The community in this salon is lovely! read more

I thought about this long and hard and I just really couldn't help it but leaving my honest review. I understand this salon gets generally good reviews and that's why I decided to go with them after not being able to tend to my hair because of a newborn for a year. I went in with an outgrown waist long balayage hair to get a face framing hair cut and partial highlight to hide my grey. Not only my haircut was definitely the worst I have ever received in my life the color is also all over the place - unevenly toned mess. I have Asian hair and I am aware that requires some skills. The hair dresser had casually mentioned that her mentor is Chinese and that's how she learned how to cut Asian hair. I had no doubt in her ability in the process until it really went downhill to a devastating disaster. I know it's dramatic but I literally cried in my car driving home. Frankly I really enjoyed my conversation with the hair dresser. I wanted to support her as a single parent but this is not personal. We reviewed my hair cut vision and she didn't show any signs of concern that she couldn't make the face framing trim work. She first began to cut the bangs to a length that has the face framing length then she started using this "texturing technique" attempted to blend it. This technique has completely failed. It made my hair choppy and uneven length and she continued to try the same technique to attempt to fix it and ended up taking more and more length. At the end the choppiness is still extremely visible and the length is much shorter than we discussed. She eventually has to apologize that this is not going to get better I may lose even more my length if she attempts to fix it further. She said it's choppy and obvious because of the hair color. I would admit a lighter hair color may make things more obvious but the cut is extremely bad and you can see chunks of short hair on top of long hair all over the place. The highlights also are in different colors and the division of the new highlights does not blend with old at all. A day later I also developed a rash behind my ears and my scalp is inflamed with itchy bumps. I was there for 4 hours. From what I see the clientele of this place is all 60+ caucasians. It was my fault not to stick to my old hair dresser who knows really how to work with hairs. And after $230 later I'm devastated. I wish no one experience this kind of disaster, especially right before the holidays. read more

I had my husband cut his hair here and first time. The cut is quite uneven and it almost look like "chopped". There are some stray hair in his bangs and I had to cut them short so it does not bother his eyes. I used to cut his and my kids' hair although I'm not a professional. I was surprised to see "make it shorter 1 inch" came back with 2inches off. I have to take the business to somewhere else unfortunately. read more

I read reviews of this place and wasn't sure, but pricing in the Bethesda area is absurd, so I decided to take a chance and still check out AZNA. I had my appointment with Anaieta and she is wonderful. She chatted with me the whole time and I could see how loyal her clientele is by how warmly she greeted others who came in while I was in the chair. My cut and color turned out great. I got a lot of compliments on my cut. In fact, hair dressers always fight with me over dying my hair black, which is my natural color. Anaieta took one look at me and asked if I wanted to cover the grey and go my natural color, black. THANK YOU, the argument is skipped and I will be back! read more

Backstage is a wonderful salon for all age groups and is very convenient with free parking under the building and easily walkable from the Bethesda Metro. I've been going here for years along with my husband and teenage son. We all love Veronica who has a knack of dealing with anything from my fine hair to my son's thick, curly and unruly hair. Everyone loves Veronica's English humor and look forward to seeing her and catching up (I sense ALL of her clients feel this way!) I've been coming here for years and have yet to find a better balance of quality and price. Even after leaving Bethesda I still drive back for Backstage once every 5 weeks or so. The prices are low and the service is excellent. Veronica is my stylist, and she's the best! But everyone who works there seems reliably good. The place is tucked away a bit, and they could use some out-front signage on Old Georgetown Road, but it's worth finding -- you won't find a better combination of service and value in Bethesda or in DC. read more

Downtown Bethesda is not known for its bargains, but the AZNA salon is easily the best value in town. Veronica is the best hair stylist I have ever found, and at my ripe old age, I have had perhaps a hundred haircuts with many different hairdressers over the course of my lifetime. Every time I walk out of the salon after a session with Veronica, I feel like a million bucks, even though her prices are quite reasonable. So many stylists I have encountered give you what THEY want, but Veronica really listens to what YOU want. She found a way to style my thin, straight hair that gives it much more body and zing. Veronica also has an amazing memory. Many years ago, before I discovered Veronica at AZNA, I had a traumatic scalp massage with an unskilled stylist at another salon. Veronica ALWAYS remembers this and instructs the shampooer to "go very gently" on me. With her charming British wit and upbeat attitude, Veronica makes the trip to the salon fun and relaxed, like having coffee with a good friend.
