Food is amazing, service is good. We would definitely return as we are local and this is better then the other lakefront Mexican restaurant.

Food was decent but not worth the price and there was multiple flies circling my table for the entire time I was there.

I moved to Sparta during the pandemic and this became our go to take out for Mexican food! We were impressed by their portions (they give you a lot of food!), and even with that, the quality is still great. I've eaten there (outside) quite a few times now, and they recently renovated, so it's a super cute back patio area. they also have a live mariachi band some weekend nights (i'm not sure which nights this is). We've had several flavors of frozen margaritas (all yummy!), queso, fajitas, combination plates, enchiladas, salads, etc. and everything has been very good. i definitely recommend getting the churros (chocolate filling inside) that come with vanilla ice cream! writing this review (after being there last night), is making me hungry- luckily i have leftovers! i also just wanted to touch on the service (and manager/host), which has been wonderful. i came in during june for my birthday dinner, and they didn't have the outside set up bc it was a little chilly. i'm immunosuppressed and can only eat outside, so i was going to leave disappointed, but they very kindly (and without making it feel like an imposition), opened up the back patio and i had a great birthday dinner. thank you! read more

The busy crowd on a Friday night was a good sign. Cocktails were very good, though a little pricey at $20 a pop. Service was friendly and fast. Much too loud to enjoy a conversation with your company and I really liked the vibrant decor. All the elements were in place until the food arrived. Paella was weak, flavorless & sparse on seafood. Tostones were under cooked briquettes and don't recall the other appetizer we ordered, (that says a lot), but do remember final bill. $165 for two and felt totally fleeced. This is some of the best authentic Mexican food I have had in ages. Service prompt and very friendly. As this is being written during the pandemic...will say that the decor is comfy and plenty of social distancing between tables inside - and a nice outside area too. All servers and staff wear masks. The chips are fresh and the salsa is great, the sauces and seasonings in the meals are sophisticated and layered. If you like it hot and spicy they won't disappoint with several really spicy dishes. Their home made habanero hot sauce is fantastic. If you are into hot sauces you will love it. It was so good I asked if they would sell me a bottle of it - and they did! And hands down the best low calorie margarita I have ever had. This is not your typical bad imitation of Mexican food. It's the real deal. I will be back again. read more

They are NOT FOLLOWING Covid 19 Rules. nobody in the Kitchen is wearing a Mask! Nobody!!!! one server had his mask hanging down around his nose. (nose all exposed) I asked him. aren't you suppose to be covering your nose? The one woman server, would pull her mask down to talk to us. they sat a big party in the table next to us. (not six feet apart) as if that is not enough. the Food was terrible!! I had quesadillas. (requested shredded beef) there was so little beef on the quesadilla that it was laughable!! not very favorable either! My friend ordered tacos (skirt Steak) the most sorriest looking Tacos I have ever Seen!!! steak came out cubed (which was okay) Steak was Stringy. Tacos came out Naked and very dry. nothing on them! no lettuce, no cheese, no tomatoes, no salsa, no sour cream, nothing!! when my friend asked for some sour cream. they obliged. yet charged her $1.50 for a little thing of cream! unbelievable!! sure do miss Smitty's that use to be there. this place needs a lot, lot of improvement. I doubt we'll ever be back. unless they come under new ownership. Geez, even Taco Bell has better food than this place. I don't know what's going on here, but another restaurant near Sparta is off our list. I've had friends tell me they got their bill and were SHOCKED at the cost of the drinks (and then had management fight with them about it) but I didn't have that experience............ Until the other night, since our take-out was taking forever, I ordered a Paloma at the bar while waiting. It was in a TINY 5-inch earthenware vessel, tasted like crap, and cost SIXTEEN DOLLARS AND 47 CENTS. That's utter bullshit. (For scale, the small wallet next to the drink is 6 inches across - and it's taller than the drink). We will never be back again. read more

Very sad to be writing this review. My family and I visited Chapala on Wednesday to enjoy outside dining. As soon as entering their outside dining a large rusty nail went through my shoe and punctured my toe. Blood was everywhere. Associates of the restaurant were notified and seemed like they could care less. Didn't offer me a bandaid, alcohol ... nothing. Didn't even comp a drink on the bill. As we were sitting there we noticed another nail in the rocks. Hope this doesn't happen to anyone else bc guess what... they don't care. Also had to go to CVS to get a tetanus shot. So our relaxing outside dining didn't go as planned. I understand things happen but TRY to pretend you care. Won't be going back there. That's for sure!! read more

I can gladly say this is thee best Mexican food I've ever had in my life!!! I absolutely love this place and recommend it every time I go out with friends etc. My go to is the sour cream chicken enchiladas, they are to die for!! I haven't had something I haven't loved from this place yet. The service is fantastic, if you need something any of the servers are there to help. I recently ordered food to go from this relatively new Mexican spot! I was pretty satisfied with my order. The guacamole was average but the mexican street corn, el pastor tacos, and steak burrito surpassed my expectations! And this was for actually for my 21st birthday the strawberry frozen margarita was the first drink I ordered for myself and it was very good perfect balance of sweetness and tequila. The sangria was a pitcher for the table everybody loved it. I got shrimp fajitas and fajitas are some of my favorite food so I have high standards and it was pretty much top-tier. The desert was not what I expected but it grew on me a lot and it was quite tasty everybody else liked it as well who tried it. Stopped by on a Friday for breakfast or lunch and found out that breakfast is only available on Saturday and Sunday. Not so good. $17 for a mediocre strawberry margarita. Table side guacamole was $15 which was 1 avocado, 1/4 cup of onion and tomatoes mixed, and a squeeze of lemon juice. My Carne Asada was very tough to cut and chew. Also, they add a processing fee on your bill, tax you on it, and then remove the processing fee if you pay cash, which I'm pretty sure is illegal. Don Jose in Netcong is 100% better for both drinks and food. Sorry we celebrated my daughters birthday there on a recommendation. read more

I tried the chicken quesadilla 1 time and it tasted like my Caucasian mother made it. (She can't cook and doesn't use seasoning). I decided to give them another chance and found the fajitas chapala. I ordered them almost every other day for a while, they are delicious. The price was always $18 for the chicken. It comes with only 3 small tortillas and the sides I could care less for. The price was increased to $23. OVERNIGHT. An increase by $5!? In my opinion that's absolutely crazy. Hit or miss and overpriced. read more

We went for outdoor dining a couple nights ago - the oudoor setting was lovely and the food did not disapoint. There were 3 of us, and we all had something different. My son had the fish tacos - which he pronounced amazing! They were served with rice and refried beans which also disappeared. My husband had the Pollo Oaxaca - chicken with poblano cream sauce served over a combination of sauteed mushrooms, onions and peppers, with oaxacan cheese on top. It was served with rice and blackbeans. All was delicious. I don't remember the Mexican name of the dish I had but it was red snapper fillet with garlic sauce served with sauteed spinach and rice. The sauce was perfect and the dish was delicious. The prices for dinner were moderate and the food was definitely worthy! We'll be back to try more for sure! read more

The food, ambience and service was great. I can say that normally when you go to a Latin restaurant you get a lot of food this is not the place. I ordered a steak fajita and there was barely any rice and beans. They tried to spread a very thin layer of it. It was not enough to eat with my steak fajita. The drinks are very very overpriced which doesn't make sense especially when your not in Northern NJ or New York City. I was happy that I ate outdoors in the patio because the inside was very smoky. If you have lung issues this is not the place for you. The mariachi band was a good added touch. read more

I never write reviews but I was so thrown off by my experience with this place I just had to. We ordered takeout on cinco de mayo. When the food came the ground beef was completely raw in both our meals. I totally understand it was extremely busy there so I wasn't even mad. Figured I would just call and ask for at least a partial refund or something. When I called the man I spoke to told me he didn't have time to deal with it because he was too busy. So I called back the next day. I could barely understand him and all he said was to come to the restaurant and show him the food and he's give me a credit for the restaurant. Are you serious? Also he didn't even apologize or care that he gave me raw ground beef. I never complain about restaurants or give reviews but this was so bizarre I just had to. I'll never go back to this place and that was my first time ordering from there. read more

This is now our second time having Chapala's. This time we did takeout and we really noticed an improvement. The food had a lot more flavor. Both the Chapala burrito and Fiesta enchiladas were really good. The guacamole was much better than the first time but we wish they offered mild, medium, and hot so we could kick it up even another notch. We also had the jalapeno corn dip appetizer. The flavor was very good but it needed to be thicker so it stayed on the chip. All in all a good experience with excellent customer service. We will be returning. read more

Decided to come here because Lola's was closed. The Hopatcong Facebook page swears this place is better than Lola's too. Well, the guacamole wasn't fully mashed and it barely had any taste. Had to ask for salt. Then I get my food (veggie burrito) and as the plate is placed in front of me, I notice TWO gross dark hairs on it. When I point this out to the waiter, he PUTS HIS FINGERS IN MY FOOD TO SCOOP THEM OUT and then looks at me as if to get my approval. I was so turned off, I sent the plate back. Whatever. Now, I'm looking at my debit card balance and I see that they took out the $14 tip I left TWICE. I call them, and they can't help me until tomorrow. Lol this place is horrible!!!!
