We had tried this place when it first opened and weren't overly impressed but since we live so close decided to give it a second chance. Came in on a Tuesday night and were the only people in the restaurant. I know week nights are probably slow but would've thought there would be some more patrons. My husband got the taco Tuesday special (2 tacos and a margarita for $14) and I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas. They also bring out chips when you first sit down. I thought all the food was very tasty and they've definitely improved since our first visit. Also helps that they serve alcohol now. This year-old spot in Wharton is such a gem. The vibe inside is vibrant and colorful, with walls full of character, while the outdoor seating looked inviting too--we chose to sit inside and soak it all in. Our server, Camilo, was fantastic! Super attentive, friendly, and on top of everything all night. Even on a quiet Monday, the margaritas were flowing. I tried both the passion fruit and strawberry versions, both super refreshing, flavorful, and not too sweet. Food came out looking as good as it tasted. The chicken flautas special arrived golden and crispy, topped with fresh lettuce, tomato, and a sprinkle of cotija cheese. My date's chicken quesadilla stole the show--cheesy, loaded, and absolutely delicious. The fish tacos were another highlight, served in a generous portion that could easily be shared, and packed with flavor. With four drinks and three entrées, the bill came to about $100, which felt really fair given the quality and portions. Really enjoyed my lunch at colossal. To start, chips were served and the sauce served with it is very good. I love me some queso fundido I ordered that as an app. I dipped the cheese in the chips and ate it with the tortilla chips. I enjoyed it. I then had the Al pastor tacos. It was not great, but still good and I enjoyed it. Big kudos to the decor inside. The art is very nice. I've driven by this place countless times and finally decided to try their happy hour that was advertised outside. Happy hour is offered from 12-6 Monday to Thursday and offered a variety of food for $9-$11 including flautas and appetizers. We tried the yuca fries and platter which included a taco, cheesy chorizo, and cheese quesadilla. They were large portions for happy hour specials and tasty! They also offer taco Tuesday special for $13 which includes an alcoholic drink and two tacos with a protein of your choice excluding tuna and Baja fish. Unfortunately they don't allow you to mix proteins. I had the mango margarita which was strong and steak tacos which were very flavorful. Tacos were a decent size and filled. I can't believe I forgot to write this review right after. This place is exactly what Wharton needed. Food: Mexican fare with some cool additions, we started with the Colossal Calamari which might be one of my favorite calmari's to date. Light, airy, but the sauces were excellent. I also got a burrito bravado which is hearty and delicious. Service: our waiter Ali was exceptional. He was on top of everything and he was super nice. Aesthetic: sometimes restaurants have too many things up on the walls that are contrasting and make the room noisy. This place has a lot up, but it is the right style and right feel that makes this place such a beautiful location. I love the "traditional" pieces that they have hanging and their use of neon signs is cute and tasteful. read more

The vibe in here is incredible. Sharp day-of-the-dead artwork, on-point neon lighting, colorful flowers at each table... the owners had fun setting this up, and they want you to have fun too. You'd never know that Pop's Chicken used to occupy this building. I was tended to by Camilo, who I gather is part of the family that operates Colossal. He's bilingual and talks super fast in both English and Spanish. I had to ask him a few times to repeat himself so I could understand the specials. They really have a huge menu, and unfortunately it's on an iPad, which is a turn-off. There were entrees over a huge range between $15-30, and I gather that the more expensive ones are far larger portions. I went with a coconut lemonade (perhaps a little too sweet) and fish tacos. I'd eat these fish tacos again: cooked to the right temperature, crunchy yet moist, slathered in mayo, and with shredded cabbage for texture. That said, they were messy to eat. The tortilla was just packed. My real cloth napkin (!) was just covered in sauce when I was done. I was disappointed not to find a margarita on the menu. In fact there were no alcoholic drinks. Maybe they'll get a license? This place has lots of ambition - you can see it in the playing, the decor, and the way the owners asked on my way out about my experience. The chips were served with some kind of sauce-- not salsa-- but not sure what. And very different. The Colossal Margarita was good- but a bit of a disappointment-$15 served in a rocks glass mostly full of ice-- certainly a misnomer given its name. The Fajitas were very good; but the side of rice was about an 1/8 cup and dry. Black beans were authentic but again very small side portion- same 1/8 - 1/4 cup. Server was a little over enthusiastic- pointing with both fingers taking an order and every time he checked in- he meant well but it was a little awkward. This BYOB Mexican food and themed restaurant allows you to bring your own wine or beer to be consumed in the premises. They also advertise Sunday brunch. Most dishes in this restaurant were priced between $16 and $30. The virtual menu is an iPad. I was friendly greeted with a basket of colorful delicious tortillas with a mild salsa which had a unique savory umami flavor balanced with the sweetness of onions and a hint of Chipotle sauce. I started with a Tuna Tartare with Ponzu sauce, Chipotle aioli, circularly sat on a layered base of corn and avocado as the appetizer. This dish had an amazing taste and fine dining qualities including in terms of presentation, plating, and complex delicious taste. It is probably the best tartare served in Wharton, New Jersey. This was the best dish of the evening. For the main course, I had a Molcajete Ranchero bowl that went not above, but somewhat beyond expectation. This Molcajete had beef, chicken, chorizo, cheese, yellow rice and black beans on the side. The bowl was garnished with a beautiful and delicious onion. The meats tasted somewhat bland. This is probably because they were immersed in liquid, so you must use a bit of salt and pepper. The rice and beans were simply delicious and were well seasoned and tasted great. The juice inside the bowl also tasted great and it was more seasoned than the meats. You should ask for a spoon and try it or dip the meats into the juice before eating because this will add flavor and seasoning. You will enjoy combining the individual meats, rice, beans, and the juice, making soft shell tacos. This was the second best dish of the evening. For dessert, I ordered the Coconut Lemonade, which is a must have, and a Tres Leches cake which comes with ice cream. The Coconut Lemonade is delicious. It has an incredible balance of sweet, milky, nutty, and sour flavors all deliciously packed in the same mocktail. The Tres Leches cake was disappointing. The portion was great, but the frosting was insipid. The overall taste of the cake could be greatly improved. Unfortunately, the best tasting part of this cake was the ice cream that comes with it (not cake.) In an authentic Mexican eatery, this dessert should have been to die for. Your real Mexican "Abuela" would be flummoxed and embarrassed. Yet, the overall quality of the food was good, the overall taste was also good, it seemed to have been passionately cooked, felt overall freshly made to the palate, and the experience with some exceptions was good. Service at Colossal was a hit and a miss. Service was very friendly, but the real service could be improved. For example, a glass of house water stayed empty for a very long time, and the server had to be asked to pour more water into it. The server blatantly allowed the dishes to accumulate on a relatively small table for the size of the plates. Merely quickly busing the table could have improved the service. The server seemed to be overwhelmed by a large family table with several customers. She was without the help of the manager or an owner or even the help of another server. This is a managerial issue that could be solved. I gave the server a 22% tip on a $71 bill for one person, which the server absolutely did not fully deserve, but again it all comes down to the manager or the owner. In addition, most of the dishes served at Colossal used sauces and foods which are stewy like beans; yet, no spoon came with anything except a fork and a serrated regular knife. Colossal also served a lot of steaks there. I had ordered a dish that came with a steak without a proper steak knife that could properly cut the steak. The purpose of service is not to be asking all the time, but each dish will come with proper silverware, the table cleaned without the need to ask, and glasses refilled just the same. Ambiance at Colossal could use more light and better acoustics. The sound of a large family in a relatively small place could have you shouting and trying to talk to the person across your table, specially when people can bring their own booze and may become louder than normal. The bathroom was clean and well lit. I still recommend Colossal because the food was overall good and the prices were not too expensive, considering all other aspects of service and ambiance that could be improved. Normally this experience would be a max 2-star review, but I believe this place has potential. read more

The food is excessively delicious every bite has so much flavor and it is my families favorite mexican restaurant that we have tried so far. The menu is very broad and you can also get drinks from the very complete bar. The service is excellent as well the waiter was so nice and gave us recommendations in addition to checking up on us. Their only issue is the location because it does not seem to help their clients that come in but there is plenty parking. Inside it is very pleasing and calming the environment and energy is so nice and it is colorful and mexican but at the same time very modern and calming to the eye. I didn't feel like this one was smoky enough and there really wasn't much seafood.. I didn't realize that this restaurant had a bar. On their website it mentions nothing about alcoholic drinks. I ordered a spicy margarita. It did not really contain much alcohol and although it tasted decent, I had to ask for extra jalapeños on the side to spice it up which they charged for. I don't think I'll be returning because I felt like this restaurant was very pricey for a Mexican restaurant in this area.
