Okay....so it is a nice place, (the one on 29th is older), with a welcoming pleasant staff, and the best salsas ever ! But the food is, well, so-so, though the menu is great. This is the only restaurant I've ever been to, which doesn't give you a spoon, unless you ask for it ! The drinks are more water than anything stronger. Bring your own hip flask ! All in all, I would continue going there for lack of somewhere better that is close by...but it would really help if they could work on improving the food, which is, after all, why we go to eat out? I think there are better Mexican options in Eugene. We were seated in a dark corner of the restaurant without the lights on (likely due to being a table of 6), and it took them a while to turn on the lights for us. My fajita quesadilla was overwhelmingly loaded with cheese. The beans and rice were good. I'd recommend getting fajitas, not the fajita quesadilla. read more

I went here for lunch since they have a nice patio on Oakway Plaza and the weather was gorgeous. I ordered a lunch special: enchilada and tamale with shredded pork. Unfortunately it was bland and very mushy. The tamala had a weird taste and was quite unpleasant to eat. The enchilada was not much better. It came with refried beans. And all those were overloaded with melted yellow cheese. And a side of bland rice. Not my style of Mexican food. Service was attentive, no complaints there. Oh my gosh! Do not sleep on this place. The food is 10/10!! Flavors, amazing. Portion size, large!! Quality, great. Look at all this food! We were both overwhelmed again with how much we got!! Tons of chips and salsa, complimentary with order. Best size I've received from a Mexican restaurant with a to go order. Made such a nice touch. Can never have too much chips and salsa! Pollo fundito is always soo good! This time was no exception... delicious! Lots on the platter with enough for leftovers. The other dish we got was also huge! Lots to pick at. I'm a native Eugenean, and up until tonight I had somehow never made it to this place. It's been around forever, I had heard good things in years past, and it always seems busy (as it was tonight). My husband had a hankering for Mexican food and a margarita, so we decided to give it a go! My husband got the three taco plate with rice and beans. He had one word: bland. He loves Mexican food and in the last year we have been very lucky to sample some quality fare on trips to Arizona and San Diego. He requested habanero sauce and they brought out some green concoction that bore no resemblance to the spicy, fruity sauce he adores. Rice? Bland. Salsa? Bland. Margarita? Pre-mix with marginal tequila. I wasn't in the mood for Mexican and wanted something simple, so I opted for the cheeseburger and fries. Mistake. To be fair, one of the best burgers I ever had was at a local Chinese restaurant, so I figured I'd take a chance on their American style fare here. I don't like to assume that a Mexican food place that offers hamburgers would, by default, be bad at making them. It was bad. Really bad. A tiny frozen patty on a smushed, stale bun...reminded me of the ones they served in our high school cafeteria. Fries were nothing terrible, but nothing special; obviously also your basic frozen option from US Foods or wherever. I didn't even come close to finishing the plate, and that hamburger will haunt me. The only reason I'm giving this restaurant more than one star is because of the staff. The servers were kind and attentive. It's really too bad they're serving sub par Mexican food that is terribly overpriced for what it is. The decor and music is basically your cookie cutter Mexican restaurant vibe, nothing special. When i came here the 8 oz skirt steak was really good, the warm chips were also quite good. The service was good but not perfect (it was quite crowded i dont blame them). The ambience was not great as you can expect with the giant groups but before the group arrived it was quite nice. Only problems i have with it is that the beans were not good, and the guacamole was a bit strange tasting but other than that its a relatively good restaurant. read more

I've always enjoyed Chapala's for many years. My husband and I recently visited this location when I was craving Mexican food, which I could totally eat every day of my life and be completely happy. I adore the tortilla soup. It's chicken, cheese, and avocado, in a dark, rich, flavorful broth. It's amazing. Both my husband and I constantly order this every time we go. The salsa is delicious as well. It's not one that varies by who makes it. It's consistently the same each time, which I like. It could be hotter, but that's simply my own personal preference. The flavor is delicious either way. My husband and I both love the fajitas. My go-to is the carne asada. His is the arroz con pollo. The flautas are amazing as well. My favorite, the carne asada is the most perfectly cooked skirt steak. It's so easy to overdo and destroy it. Nope, it's tender, flavorful and quite simply amazing. The service is always good. The waiters have been there for years. There's not much turnover there. They are always efficient, enjoy their job and are good at it. They take orders and check them before they come out. I typically order my food without beans, just rice. It's a basic request, but there are many Mexican restaurants that screw this up. Not here. They know what they are doing. It's a tad expensive, being around $40-45 for my husband and I. But that's with soup, entrees and sodas. I typically have enough to take some home for another portion. I think it's worth it and have no problems with the prices. Parking can be a pain in the ass. It's a fairly small, cramped lot. I typically back into my spot when I come in, to make it easier to get out at the end. It's also quite a drive to get here, being almost 30 minutes from my house. But long drive and parking aside, it's worth it. It's a restaurant we've been coming to for years and will keep returning for many years to come. read more

I moved to Eugene from Arizona many years back, and I liked Chapala. It was one of those drive by things, oh look a Mexican restaurant that doesn't look bad! I took my other Arizona-Oregon transplant friends there, and they liked it too. Yes, they do that "hola amigos" Oregon Mexican restaurant thing ( what IS that), but not too badly compared to some other places I've been. It's not FANCY Mexican food,or regional authentic for Mexicans Mexican food, it is definitely gringoized ( and Eugeneized, tofu carnitas, WHAT?) but it was clean, the service was pretty good, and I have admittedly liked the vegetarian options, including a veggie quesadilla with mushrooms and squash in it. We went recently with the father in law, who is super picky and still lives in the Eugene area, and he liked it a lot. They have brown rice and black beans, and he is something of a health nut, so that made him happy. My kid was satisfied with her food, too, which is always a good sign. Went there on Monday and ordered Carne y mas with the enchiladas and it was good so I went back two days later to get the same thing only to receive 1/4 of the serving of Carne than I got 2 days before. I brought it up to the server and he just said maybe they tenderized longer and that's why it looks little. I understand how portions work with different sizes of meat but this wasn't the case. I had the most tiniest piece of Carne about 2 oz worth of meat. We've been going there since moving to Eugene 4 years ago. In the past 3 months we've stopped going there altogether. Some of the food is very good, but the burritos are uniformly tasteless and bland inside. I guess the sauce they put over the top is supposed to provide the flavor. I would give them 3 stars for the food. The service has been miserable and getting worse over the last 6 months. We have a 3 yo and every time we go in I ask for a booster seat, and every time they never come back with one. Getting a refill on your water is like pulling teeth. It's obvious that the supervision has been going down hill. The wait staff just doesn't care. To put a cherry on top, the last 3 times we ate there I had gastrointestinal issues the next day. Finally tried out this Mexican restaurant since it's walking distance from my place. Warm chips and salsa brought over quickly. Wish the salsa had more kick. Water glasses were refilled without delay. Got the mucho combination plate with a taco, chalupa, and chimichanga (all with ground beef). Food came out quickly as is the norm at Mexican restaurants. The taco and chalupa had to be eaten quickly due to sogginess factor. However, both were flavorful and disappeared fast. The refried beans and rice were pretty bland which is a shame.
