The night is quiet outside in Killington, but lively inside of Charity's. From the service to the food, my family had a wonderful experience for our first night in Vermont. Out server was super friendly getting our orders and letting us know when our food was going to come out. This was going to be our burger night of the trip and Charity's Classic Smash with fries was a great choice. Regular fries were decent, but I think the sweet potato fries (waffle cut!) were better. Charity's has a big drink menu. It was tough to decide among all the local ciders, but I went for the Mountain Water canned cocktail from the distillery up the road in Killington. It was so good! Disappointed I can't find it anywhere to buy around my area. They take reservations, so I recommend that if you want to get a table just in case you arrive on a crowded night like we did! It's a warm and casual atmosphere inside. I imagine it's quite cozy during the busy ski season. read more

This place exceeded every expectation imaginable for us. My wife and I were spending one night in Killington, and looked for places within walking distance of our hotel. We only stopped in here for an afternoon drink because our room wasn't ready. It was a Thursday, and once we looked and saw a $25(!!!) lobster special, we told the bartender we'd be back for dinner. We returned a few hours later and sidled up to the bar. The same bartender we had chatted with before quickly served us drinks and we ordered clam chowda --- we're tourists, we had to! It was phenomenal, and I enjoyed every bite. Once we saw that the lobster special is an actual, full, lobster --- not just the tail, but the entire thing --- we decided to split it. I'm glad we did because there was so much meat on that! It was a challenge to break through, but I'm glad we did it. And for $25, it was worth every crack. We enjoyed a couple more drinks and decided we could share one more item. We ordered the smash burger and subbed creamed corn for the side. It was an excellent way to close out a fantastic evening. Shortly after, we closed out and walked back to the hotel. If you find yourself in Killington and want a chill place, kind and patient service, and great food, I highly recommend stopping here. Charity's is the lodge with a fireplace for all of the aprés ski beer, cocktails, wine and non-alcoholic drinks before an awesome dinner kind of place. After a good day of skiing Killington - or surrounding mountains - you'll probably face crowds of folks at any of the restaurants in the area. There are a few restaurants which line the street directly leaving the Killington Resort. Charity's is one of those restaurants and it has good, old-fashioned character. It's a 1970's saloon with a kick-a** aprés ski drink list including 16 beers on draft, 16 canned craft beers and ciders, 10 mainstream canned beers, 10 seasonal craft cocktails and 24 bottles of wine. Charity's is renown for its Old Fashioned cocktail, according to a couple of locals. They even have 3 hot drink options, 2 with bourbon and the one I enjoyed: a Chai Me Now. It has Rumchata, Chai and a real cinnamon stick. Nonalcoholic drinks here are divided into two categories: there are 2 featured cocktails made with denatured spirits - ie nonalcoholic whiskey and nonalcoholic tequila - and there are 6 called, "Not-Tails," including hot cider. Not Tails include Green Machine, Cinnamon & Spice, Baywatch, Citrus Fuzz and a Shirley Temple and don't need to use the denatured spirits. The decor here is nostalgic and although the restaurant was opened in 1971, the bar itself was dismantled and rebuilt from Davis, West Virginia. So the bar itself was made in 1887. This bar was actually made in France by an Italian immigrant, so there is a ton of admirable history that goes along with it. On the menu: salads, burgers, tacos and entrees. When we were there, the Smashburger tacos looked interesting. Tacos look like the real deal here: with 3 proteins including carnitas, chicken and shrimp. Yum. We were there in August and the restaurant was half full with many empty tables. We waited 25 minutes, I guess they were short on staffing. My wife and the Lavender Bees Knees, which was really good. I had a berry drink with Tito's, which was decent but had too much ice in it. The porch was nice, with the evening air and live music. The outdoor chairs are uncomfortable and heavy enough to withstand a EF5 tornado without blowing away. The black bean burger was decent in that it didn't immediately fall apart and crumble. I give this place points for not using one of those home-made in the restaurant veggie burger monstrosities that crumble like mushy dried clay as soon as you look at it. My wife got the Buddha bowl, that I think even the bhikkhus would turn their noses up at. The Mexican street corn was decent, a big portion and filling. I thought it was overly creamy, without some of the sweetness, tangy, and spicy flavors of other elote I've tasted. The food was slow to come out of the kitchen. Overall, a decent middle of the road place to try for standard American fare. Kid and dog friendly. read more

We were in the area after the Spartan Race and needed to grab an early dinner. This seemed to be the only one open that had standard American fare. There was a group of hungry Spartans with me and the menu was vast enough to pique everyone's taste buds. I loved the old style look of this place; it really looked like an old saloon from the 1800s but it was built in 1971. However, the bar was from France and shipped to the US in 1887, hence the name. The parking lot was spacious. There was an outdoor patio that looked great to dine in. On the front lawn, there was a game of Cornhole. Our server was great. The food came out quick. Great outdoor seating with room for kids to run around, a stage for live music, large menu including kids, and good value. Went here on Christmas Eve, no reservation but seated right away which was great. Live music also great! Our server was friendly and attentive. Food options were good for our party and spanned a wide variety from burgers to seafood. I had the salmon which was cooked perfectly. Two in our party ordered tacos and we had one jerk chicken sandwich. Everyone was happy with their meal. The fries were extremely salty. Like dude chill on the salt!! My biggest gripe and the main reason for 3 stars and not 4 is the cc surcharge. It was on the bill before they knew if I was paying with a cc or not. Like what? I did ask the server if it's removed when paying cash and she said yes but I have no idea if that's true or not. Honestly just increase your food prices by 3% and then don't charge a cc fee. It pisses me off to the point that I reduce my tip by the percentage you charge me. You hit me for a 3% cc processing fee? Well that 20% tip just went down to 17%. You could argue that I'm taking it out on the server and you wouldn't be wrong but maybe the owner will see this and say "I love my employees and i want them to be happy and work hard and if the consumer is taking out my bad decisions on my staff then I need to fix that". One way or another the customer is paying. So sneak it in my bill by raising the prices by 3% so at least I don't feel like you're screwing me with this stupid surcharge, or let your waitstaff deal with thr fallout from people like me. We made a reservation two weeks in advance for a party of eight to celebrate my birthday. We arrived on time and waited to be seated, but the hostess was immediately unwelcoming. She told us it was "not her problem" that our party would be split into two separate booths far away from each other. When we politely asked if we could sit together, she turned around and began bad-mouthing us to her coworker within earshot. After we were finally seated, our food took over an hour and a half to arrive - and when it did, it was not what we ordered. To make things even more uncomfortable, the manager sat alone at the table directly behind us and watched us eat the entire time. She repeatedly stared at us and tilted her head whenever we picked up our food, which was extremely unsettling and inappropriate. We asked for compensation due to the excessive wait time and strange service, but instead received condescending remarks and no compensation at all. To be fair, the food itself was good. However, the service and overall atmosphere completely overshadowed it. I usually don't write reviews, but this experience deeply unsettled me. Overall, the service was rude, disorganized, and uncomfortable from start to finish. What should have been a birthday celebration turned into a miserable experience. I would strongly recommend not celebrating a special occasion here. read more

This was a lovely place for some lunch during our visit to Killington. The waitress was so helpful in giving us recommendations and so nice overall. She recommended the french onion soup and their smash burgers, which was what we decided to get. I ordered a french onion soup that was not only delicious, but it looked amazing when it arrived -- I almost didn't want to eat it. My husband had a smash burger and was very happy with his choice. The Banana Hammock, the Painkiller, the margarita and local beer. The French onion soup was truly, really good. Had the Cabot's tacos- decent. Let's start with the food--or rather, whatever barely edible excuse they call food. The undercooked chicken was the real star of the show, though not in a good way. Nothing says "welcome to food poisoning" like a meal that still clucks. If you enjoy dry, flavorless, or downright unsafe cuisine, this place will feel like home. The drinks? Hope you're not thirsty. The cocktails were miniature, as if they were designed for a child's tea party. If you're paying premium prices, you'd at least expect a full-sized drink, but here, you're basically getting a shot with garnish. Service was equally laughable. Our server disappeared for such long stretches that I started to wonder if they had left for another job. No refills, no checking in--just a whole lot of waiting and wondering if we had been abandoned. Overall, Charity's 1887 Saloon is a great place if you love disappointment. Here for the off season on a Tuesday so very quiet with some new Englanders holding down the bar (I can tell by logos on their shirts and license plates I nthe parking lot). Which means people did their homework such as I. . I made a simple order of a Von Trappe beer which was decent, a little warmer than I would like on hot day. I ordered their signature French onion soup, steak and mashed potatoes. French onion soup was truly one of the best I have had and I have consumed plenty. Not too salty and packed with marinated onions from the broth and a healthy cost of seasoned cheese. Medium NY Steak and garlic mashed was a good portion and hit the spot for dinner. Reasonable amount of menu items and decent prices for the market. Service with a smile. Stacy was my server an knew her menu and recommended options on beer when asked so I took a leap for a second beer and choose another Vermont beer with Green State Zero Gravity Lager (Colder) to have with dinner. read more

Great place!! We stopped in for late lunch. We were glad they opened at 3. We are not skiers and it was hard to find anything open before 4pm. Employees were super friendly and polite. I would return here again based on the employees alone! The food and cocktails were also awesome. We started with the large (very large) pretzel and cheese sauce with a nice country Dijon mustard (yum!!). Our cocktails ranged from Marguerita's,to Bloody Mary's (with bacon) and various wines (all good). Two of us ordered the smash burgers with fries which were excellent. A few Cobb Salads which were pretty big and looked so good. The fried chicken sandwich was also enjoyed. Looked messy but my friend said it was delicious! We skipped dessert because we were full but closed out with cocktails and really enjoyed a few hours here.. What a cool place! The inside seating is historic, and the outside seating is beautiful. Make sure you check out the bar with the beautiful marble rail. Thursday nights are lobster night: 1 1/4lb steamed lobster with a half ear of corn and baby potatoes for $24.99. Our server was so friendly and cheery. Though it was a bit busy, all staff were helping each other out, and we didn't wait for anything. I had the Zorba the Greek salad with a black bean burger (feta and burger are locally made and sourced, both incredibly tasty). It's a good sized salad that left me full. Which was fine because we were able to have a drink at the bar while we waited. Once we were seated with our menus our waiter came out and gave us a few suggestions for their best sellers. I went with the Julio Loco. The burger was quite amazing with tons of different flavors and the fries were fresh and crispy! I also had one of the specialty adult beverages and while I can't remember exactly what the name of the drink was it was pretty tasty and the bartender made sure to use a bit of a heavier hand. Our waitress was a saint. I wish that I could have packed her up and taking her with us. I started off with the chips and queso which was very delicious. I then had a scrumptious burger served on a excellent gluten-free bun. The people around me had the mac & cheese and other burgers, and everyone was ecstatic with their food. The service was amazing. We had informed our waitress that we were going snowmobiling and she was very prompt and hurried everything along as per our request. Ordered the special (rib eye and fries), my wife ordered the turkey pot pie. Waited for almost a half hour. Server never checked on us. Finally went over and spoke to one of the other servers (couldn't find ours) and asked what was going on. Other server apologized and went to check on the order. I sat down. Other server then arrived with our order (our serve r was still a no-show). Steak was cold, with frozen (yes, FROZEN) chunk of steak butter on top. Wife's pot pie was tepid. Server had said it "just got hidden behind another order". More likely, the first Server just didn't pick it up. And now they're out of the Special. Replacement food was nothing special. Nice old decor with an interesting burger focused menu. Sadly we chose some of their specialty entry's a spicy noodle bowl and a buritto Filled with steak and French fries. Ugh. The noodle bowl despite the waitress claim it was a bit spicy was beyond hot and returned. The steak in the burrito was in large dry chunks and marginal. The French fries were soggy. Ugh. Shame on us for dieting these two items. Shame on the saloon for offering them The Union rings were good although the sauce was again very spicy.
