I'm very disappointed. For starters whoever answers the phone to take orders is not friendly the customer service was not there and it made me want to just cancel my order overall. However, I continued to pick up. Once I got there the service was better. The food is where I'm really disappointed.... Mac and cheese was not soul food like or like your grandma made it. There is barely any cheese and it tastes and looks like it was put together quick with no seasonings. Everything else on my plate was a 6/10.... The banana pudding was terrible. Excellent. I found Charlenes by searching on Yelp while traveling through the area. It is tucked away in a unit of a small building off the road. So glad that I listened to the reviews. This is one of the best "meat and 3" or soul food restaurants I have ever tried. It's not just fried chicken (although that looked good too). They have lots of options ranging from beef stew to grilled fish. Veggie options were also pretty varied -- yams, fried green tomatoes, turnip greens, mash potatoes, etc. I really enjoyed everything I ordered. Flavored perfectly and not overcooked. The also have a kids menu with several options for children. Excellent cornbread, rolls, desserts too! The owner, Charlene, really makes sure you have good service too. All the servers and employees were on top of making sure the orders came out quickly. Very friendly people. Anyone would feel welcome here and enjoy the food/experience. Overall: Highly recommenced. Super friendly people here and every single entree is cooked to order so plan on sitting and chatting a bit. They have some amazing cakes for dessert, definitely try one. I had the fried pork chop dinner with blackeyed peas and fried okra and I'd definitely get it again. Plenty of parking out front and they can take credit cards as well. The bathroom is sort of in a weird spot and it's strange you wash your hands in a sink in front of everyone, but it's no big deal. They also have a salad bar. Another jewel we found while traveling through. This is a family owned and operated restaurant. The food reminds you of Sunday dinner at Grandmas and the owner is so down to earth and friendly. She introduced me to her entire family. She runs the establishment with her husband, daughters, and a host of extended family, even the great grands were there. The food was hot and tasty. The cabbage and yams were some of the best I have had. The decor is not five star, but the love she puts into the food definitely is. We ate here on a whim after reading the great reviews. It's hard to find good soul food in Iowa, so this was a treat. We were not disappointed. The fried chicken was amazing, but so was the baked chicken as well. For sides I recommend doing Mac and Cheese, but the potato salad and fried green tomatoes were awesome.
