We really wanted to love this place, but didn't have a great experience. They were out of the entree we wanted to order, but the food we had was mediocre and the wait was LOOOONG for no apparent reason (it took right at an hour to get our food). Our daughter's entree was completely forgotten, so then she waited an additional 15 minutes and had to eat after us. A manager never stopped by...and they didn't even take the forgotten entree off the check. Very disappointing. :( read more

My dear friends Avery & Amanda came to visit us at our new lake house in Cowpens, SC. We went online searching for a soul food restaurant and Charlene's came up as one of the best in the area. Well let me tell you, don't sleep on this place!!! Hands down the best soul food restaurant we've been to in a long time. Service was excellent and Mrs. Charlene is a doll, her entire family works there and they are Awesome! The Crack Cake is addictive, we had fried ribs, baked chicken, beef stew over rice, fried okra, Mac & cheese, fresh turnips, corn bread. It's so affordable, you want to take everything home with you. I tried the turkey wings, macaroni and cheese, yams and the poppa smurf cake. The turkey wings had a good flavor but they were very fatty. The macaroni was pretty good as well. I really liked the yams. They were fresh but not overly saturated in a syrup. The poppa smurf cake was really good as well. It had a great flavor and it was nice and moist. Driving home from the NCAA Tournament, we got off I-26 in Spartanburg and found this little treasure of a restaurant. We were welcomed in by Charlene herself. The food is delicious. I've never seen my son devour a chicken breast so fast. My grilled shrimp platter was amazing. I finished everything. You can't be wrong for stopping here and enjoying such wonderful food. read more

I was visiting from Portland with relatives from Texas. We wanted to have some good southern food and we found it here along with some southern hospitality! At our table we had fried chicken, fried ribs, okra, collards, yams, fried green tomatoes, "cornballs" (get some) and cornbread. All delicious. The food was absolutely amazing it's all cooked from scratch it's served hot and incredibly delicious my husband actually said that it was the best fried chicken he'd ever had. We both had the fried chicken dinner he had potato salad and macaroni and cheese and a corn bread and I had fried chicken macaroni and cheese and greens and I have to say both were absolutely delicious. Chicken was fire and the food is definitely worth the wait. The price was ridiculously low as in Chicago our meal would have been in the upper $60-$80 for 5 ppl here we barely hit $40. The people were very friendly and checked up on us multiple times . Highly recommend stopping . read more

While visiting Newberry from California we came to Moore for Miss Charlene, it was definitely worth the approximate hour drive. We had an incredible Sunday dinner. Everything we ordered was delicious!!! I had the fried pork chop, so good. I sampled many sides but my favorites were the Mac and Cheese, AMAZING!! Broccoli Cheese Casserole, OMG! Don't forget the cornbread!!!! (Also, start with the veggie sticks!! Life changing)! Miss Charlene is truly a treasure! You can feel the love that Charlene has for her guests, greeting the each by name and asking personal questions about them. We too also felt her adoration as half our group had discovered Charlene's earlier in the trip. By the end of our dinner there were hugs all around. Great choices of meat and vegetables, I had a hard time deciding, but eventually chose the fried chicken, green beans, yams and strawberry lemonade. WOW, it was great and I couldn't eat all of it. I have visited Charlene's about 3 times within the last week and a half. Every time I've visited, the food has been great! It is a meat and three vegetable style restaurant. The desserts are amazing too! The staff members are wonderful! They are friendly and have excellent customer service!
