I have had the pleasure of working with Carlos for almost 20 years. Think about what you might want in a hair salon, and almost certainly you will find it here. Friendly staff that always seems welcoming in a clean, happy environment. Most importantly, the owner genuinely CARES about the clientele and I have seen him--time and time again--make extra effort to make sure that people are happy. I know he gets great pleasure from a job well done, and his attitude shows that. When we moved to California for a couple of years, I would find myself arranging trips back to the Boston area timed when I needed a haircut. I am not saying EVERYONE will like Charles Joseph enough to fly 6000 miles to get their hair cut, but I suspect I am not the only customer to feel this way. I've been a client of Carlos (Charles) for many yrs. He listens to my needs and knows how to work with my semi-coarse Asian hair. I have a lot of hair, so I need layers. Layers are tricky when it comes to Asian hair. Over the years, Carlos has perfected my hair by giving me the perfect amount of layers my hair needs. As a mom, a great cut is I need NOT to spend more than 10-15 mins on my hair after I shower and NO need to use products but still looks fabulous! My routine involves blow drying my hair after I shower then put on rollers (NOT hot rollers). The layers flows magically after the rollers are removed. Like another reviewer, I've moved out of MA but still visits Carlos whenever I can. It's worth the trip! Life could be challenging at times but managing your hair shouldn't be one of them. I love this salon. I had been looking for a place that felt right after I had to leave the last hairdresser (whom I actually really liked) but I just can't do business with the spa owner so I was delighted to find this place. Everything about this place is super professional. I saw Elaine (whom I love!) and she was great. She is a good conversationalist plus this woman knows hair--particularly my hard to deal with hair. I went in for a color, highlight, cut, blow dry---with a little curling iron to tamp down the last of my frizzies and I looked like a brand new person. My husband (who never notices anything) took one look and said, "I'm married to this beautiful woman--your hair looks fantastic!" He always tells me I'm beautiful but this time he actually noticed my hair! I'm bicoastal (San Francisco and Boston) but I will only have Elaine do my hair, which means I'll have to get one of those crayons to fill in my roots in between times. Charles himself is a gracious owner and makes each guest feel comfortable. Every single woman who walked out of the salon looked FABULOUS!!! I highly recommend this salon and especially Elaine. The first time I went to Elaine, I was so impressed with her sincere interest in what I wanted and her determination to deliver just that. I had her do a color correction after a rushed color session at another salon. I left feeling like a million bucks and didn't have to spend a million bucks either! I'm new to the area and stumbled upon this salon via yelp. My first visit to this salon was a good visit and my hair dresser John made me feel comfortable with making it my go to salon. I unfortunately had to cancel my next appointment because my sitter canceled. I felt guilty about it because I NEVER do that but as a new mom and someone new to the area with no sitter it made things very difficult. I went in to my next appointment aware I had canceled my previous appointment and prepared to compensate the stylist for the trouble. His entire demeanor had changed. He was cordial but I felt truly like I was a burden to him. I still did the respectful and elegant thing by over tipping due to my previous cancellation, despite the awkward energy. Upon arriving home from errands I find that he colored my roots jet back. My hair is a 3 which I'm sure an experienced hair stylist can easily tell the difference especially since he noted that it was not jet black at my first appointment. I feel very disrespected and annoyed that he would challenge the integrity of my hair out of spite. Now, if I want to lift my hair it's going to be a nightmare and will cause greater damage. I am not rating the salon a one because the owner is very polite, courteous and professional but I will not be returning and am quite appalled by my experience with John. His behavior doesn't reflect well on the salon and I wouldn't recommend going to him as a new client. read more

I am so glad that I found Jon at Charles Joseph! I had basically the same hairdo for years, but didn't trust anyone to make changes to my hair. He really listens to what you want, and is also great if you are stressed, he is understanding and also very funny. I love the first style he gave me, it took 10 years off my whole look and I am constantly getting compliments on the new style he has done for me recently. He puts a lot of time and energy making sure that you walk out of the salon looking fabulous. I always feel great after seeing him and highly recommend him, everybody I have sent to him has loved him too and sent their friends. I do not get my hair cut very often and found out about this salon through Yelp. Overall great atmosphere in the salon, very clean and comfortable. I love the way my hair came out and Carlos gave me some pointers on blow drying and using the flat iron. This salon is fantastic! It surpassed my expectations. I booked my first appointment there a few weeks ago and had a haircut with Noreen. My stylist was very attentive and easy-going. The whole experience was super relaxing and tailored to my needs. I came back there to buy a few products and everyone was very helpful and patient. I ended up buying Morocanoil Hair Spray after testing a dozen of products. I'm definitely coming back! Update 12/6/16 I went back to Noreen last week and she gave me the best haircut ever. I'd been wanting to try a short layered bob for a long time but was afraid that I would get a sub-par result since my hair is very fine and flat. Noreen listened to my concerns and then executed impeccably. I love my new do! It now has so much body, it's incredible. I used to have to use products to give my hair some volume but I don't have to do that anymore. I'm thrilled! Everyone is also super efficient and kind too... From the minute you enter the salon, you are in a welcoming atmosphere. I was greeted at the door, offered coffee, and treated like an old friend. But I was there to get a good haircut. I was not disappointed. Charles is a skillful and talented cutter. He works on your hair as one would create a sculpture. I am bad at Yelp review writing even though I read them all the time, but had to put this one out there. I have gone to Carlos (now the owner) through all phases of this salon for about 20 years for haircuts. I left the area and the salon for a little over a year. After a few bad haircuts I realized the 45 minutes each way is so worth it for me. Carlos is the best stylist I have ever had - hence the 20 years with him. He's a great person all around, always consistent and very talented. He is also engaging with everyone who walks in the salon which I find awesome as an owner. The salon is gorgeous and clean, the staff warm and welcoming and the prices are on point. Today I tried a new woman who joined his staff named Juli. I am very picky about my highlights and Carlos recommended that I try her and wow, just WOW! She seriously knows her stuff and I was THRILLED with how my highlights came out. I have found my way back to CJ Salon and am thrilled not only to be back to cuts (he does a mean blow dry too) with Carlos, but to have found a new hairdresser who knows how to do highlights the right way.
