Wow! One day I downloaded the Amazon Prime delivery app and I found this place and I'm SO glad I did! All of their food is amazing! Probably some of the best food I have had in Richmond. The OMG Tomato salad is...OMG. The slaw is incredible. We ordered all different dishes and it was very affordable ( it maybe because we had a $10 off coupon it seemed that way). There also was a LOT of food so maybe there is a chef one night that serves more food than another based on the reviews I'm seeing? I will definitely be ordering from here again! What a gem! I really want to like and support Charles' Kitchen and maybe I just haven't chosen the right items, but I can't say I've been impressed so far. I've ordered take out twice when I was really pining for West Indian cuisine. Each time the staff has been pleasant and friendly, but the food was underwhelming. The first time, I ordered chicken roti and the second time, just a curry chicken lunch. The roti was not what I was used to from Trini spots in NY but it wasn't terrible. The curry chicken lunch was dry and lacking flavor. My cabbage didn't taste completely cooked and was pretty hard. But the coconut rice and side of plantain were good. I can see why Richmonders like Charles' and I may give them another try in the future, but not getting the chicken. read more

I placed an order for pick up and was asked my pick-up window which was ten minutes. I arrived five minutes after my pickup time (just to allot a cushion) and had to spend an additional three-five minutes looking for parking (not typical). But if I knew then what I know now i would've saved my time and money and just left but because I assumed my order was fulfilled I was left to endure the following: Generally when you place an order for pick up it's ready when you arrive, that was not the case here. I had to wait additional time for them to prepare my carry out that I CALLED AHEAD and ordered. With all the time they had to prepare my order it STILL wasn't complete, It was missing the side sauce. To traci (the hostess) and some others it may be minute but it's not; the sauce makes the meal in this instance. I contacted the restaurant about the discrepancy and was-encouraged to come back at which point I shared that it wasn't possible as I didn't have MORE time to spare. According to traci it was fine because she'd just make sure I got my sauce next time which I highly doubt bc she didn't make sure I got it this time & she's the one who prepared my order. So yea no it's not fine, ESPECIALLY NOT WITH ALL THE TIME THEY HAD TO GET IT RIGHT! & there won't be a next time for me. I dislike for my time to be wasted and to add insult to injury the incident was brushed off as no big deal. read more

This place is awesome! I had the stewed chicken with spinach rice and cabbage. The chicken was full of flavor, extremely tender and very juicy. My wife had the curry chicken which was also very good. He also gave me a super spicy sauce on the side to try and it was delicious but extra spicy so I only used a tiny amount. I wasn't crazy about the cabbage so I'll probably get the beans next time but that is by no means a deal breaker for this place. The staff was also very friendly. I ordered the curry mango dish with spinach rice, side of curry chicpeas and a side of cabbage and carrots. I also ordered vegan banana bread. To be honest.. the cabbage and the dessert were the best thing. The cabbage was really delicious though! I had wished I ordered all cabbage. The banana bread was tasty as well and it was a big slice. you certainly get your moneys worth for that piece. As for the curry mango, the flavor was good. I liked that it was a little spicy but I didn't like the fact that the skin was still on the mango.. I've had mango dishes before and it wasn't like that, It was kinda unexpected but I guess that's just how they do it. Also, there were pieces of the seed on 4 out of 5 of the mango chunks.. that sucked too. Oh and yeah the portions of the entire dish were small. it was like 5 chucks of mango with some seed on some of the pieces and skin.. not much mango. The amount of rice was alright. The amount of curry chickpeas was a little surprising. I wish I would have took a picture but I was so hungry. It looked like about 2 TBS of cooked chickpeas.. =/ As for the flavor, it was good but in my opinion I've had better. it tasted like how when I make curry chickpeas and I'm not even from the carribean. I was hoping it would have more of a gravy or a coco-nutty flavor. It may have been dissapointing for me personally because I was expecting another type of flavor. It was very flavorful though! And for the spinach rice.. it tasted alright. I can see how one would love that flavor but I wasn't really feeling it. I think the way it is seasoned would go well with something like a stew or gravy. [My gut said to get the coconut rice but I didn't] I also noticed after looking at the reviews for this restaurant, I noticed that the portions for the meat options and stuff like mac and cheese were reasonable/ good sized portions. I've ordered takeout here multiple times. My first time I had one of the chicken entrees, and that was pretty good. Since then I've gone with the spicy shrimp - pretty spicy while also having great flavor. The curried chickpeas and plantains are both very good side options. Would definitely recommend. read more

The Presentation was great and my food was a perfect hot temperature but unfortunately there wasn't any flavor whatsoever in the dish I ordered . I ordered the oxtails, Mac n cheese and rice and plantains ... my oxtails were a bit tough/dry ish , and the gravy was too salty for my liking. Mac had hardly any flavor. The plantains were the only decent part of my meal. I am from Ny and also am West Indian so this was very disappointing as I love to support westie restaurants . I hope it will be better ... I went during lunch and got the curry chicken and a chicken patty, very digestible didn't seem like a large amount of sodium. The owner came out and shook my head and spoke to my, the lady at the register was super polite and brought my food out to me, double checked the receipt to make sure I got everything. Tried for the first time. Overall it was great. The food was fresh and abundant and very authentic. Had the spicy shrimp with coconut rice and mango slaw. Was so good, and everything the other reviews said about the Mac and cheese were True, it was fantastic! The place has been many different restaurants over the years so the layout and atmosphere was bland yet functional. There is no wait staff... It's counter service only so nothing fancy. We have been here a couple times and I haven't really been impressed with their food. We normally order the stew chicken and curry chicken and I do appreciate how they have both spinach and coconut rice. Coconut rice always wins with me, but thank you for having a different option. There was nothing special about the the curry chicken or the stewed chicken, but the plantains were yummy. The chef came out and chatted with us and gave us some mango slaw which was also tasty. We decided to give this place a try because a few family members highly recommended it. The food was only available for take out. I ordered the small ox tails with red beans and mango slaw. This dish came with coconut rice. I thought the ox tails could have been more flavorful. When I ate the ox tails with the rice, red beans and mango slaw, it was much better. I am not usually a fan of coleslaw but I enjoyed the mango slaw. My wife ordered the curry goat with red beans and plantains. This dish also come with coconut rice. She said the goat was just as good as what she enjoys from a local Caribbean food truck that she has ordered from in the past. I also enjoyed the goat but we would have loved to have more sauce to go with the rice. The hostess was very friendly and while we waited for our food, we had a good conversation about football. I will definitely go back and try the curry shrimp since the curry goat was really good. Went for lunch with a co-worker. Line was LOOONG and with only one cashier, we wondered - should we go somewhere else? As a restaurant person, I know lunch rush can be a test of everyone's patience, but we did wait 20 minutes in line and then another 15 minutes for our food. That's the bad news. The good news? The food is absolutely delicious. Curried chicken was moist and flavorful, coconut rice was good, and the asparagus & mushrooms were on point. My black beans had a little bit of an olive flavor that I couldn't figure out, but they were still good. We will definitely be going back. I wish there were pictures of the food on the menu, or at least descriptions. I really really wanted to like this place. I gave three stars because I'm hoping to go back and try something else, but the macaroni and cheese and the salt fish patty was not at all good. The macaroni has great potential the flavor was good but it was cold I had to reheat it, which is not a big deal but it was very clumpy I had to try to break it down to be able to eat it. The salt fish patty should have been a bread patty, because really that's all it was, there was barely any salt fish. I was expecting the patty to be flaky and crispy like other patties I've tried, but this patty kind of reminded me of the bread at Subway. OMG!!! Being from New York, I've always been a little skeptical to try any new caribbean place in Richmond especially after all of the other ones disappointed me. But trust me, when I tell you, Baaaaaby!!!! This meal I ordered to go for lunch never made it home. I ordered the oxtail bowl, cabbage, mac n cheese and Sorrel. First taste of the Sorrel made me feel like I was on an island, I think I was ready to kick up my feet and almost forgot that I had to get back home to work. Next the oxtail, maaaaan, fell off the bone, the BEST taste ever. I'm quite sure I created a new song in my head from that first bite. Hands down this is what the West End needed, this is what Richmond needed, and this has to be the best Caribbean food I've ever had while living in Richmond. Congrats and much success to you! I have been to Charles Kitchen several times and find the food fresh, flavorful, and delicious. I love the Oxtail/Goat combination with Coca rice. The sides are so good sometimes I just order them because they are plentiful. Chef Charles makes everything fresh from scratch everyday! He also has a hidden secret, he makes the best macaroni and cheese in Richmond I am originally from Brooklyn and previously gave up on Jamaica House when they gave me my meal covered in sauce with Tower Isle Beef Patties and tried to say they made the beef patties on the premises! Or how some of the other places try to cover up the lack of fresh ingredients with a whole bunch of sauce. When I go to Ruth Chris, I don't put ketchup on my steak because I know it's prepared properly People who like good food, not just Caribbean food and have a decerning palate will enjoy his food. I had been wanting to eat here for a while. I decided to call in an order to pick up. The woman on the phone was very nice and thorough. They gave me about ten minutes. I arrived and added a curry chicken patty since they were already out in one of those warm boxes. I ordered large oxtail with spinach rice, cabbage and carrots, and Caribbean Mac and cheese. The total was $21. The food was amazing everything was delicious especially the Mac and cheese. The only issue was the portion to me was not the value of $21. It was a lot of food but I think I'm comparing to Jamaica house where I can get a regular size of oxtail for $11 and my boyfriend and I can share hat with some leftover where with this I could have eaten the whole thing alone. My wife and I decided to try this establishment. My wife being of Jamaican descent wanted to give it a try. We love some of the other places in town so why not give it a shot. DISAPPOINTMENT. The Curry Chicken and Goat were extremely dry and bland. Both lacked the " LOVE" you can taste in the more traditional restaurants around town. The Black beans tasted like seasoning was added to canned black beans from the grocery store. There was zero gravy served over the goat and chicken which took slot away from the dish. For people who have never been exposed to traditional Jamaican cuisine this will be a good version of " fast food" meets the islands. I give it a 6/10 . Ordered through grub hub, and anticipated on coming in to do takeout but ended up staying and sitting in because it was very clean and nice on the inside. I ordered the Chicken Curry Bowl and a side of macaroni and cheese. Both were amazing! The curry was seasoned amazingly and the flavors were very distinct. The macaroni and cheese gave me a soul food vibe which is very good considering this is a Caribbean resteraunt. The chef came out and talked to me and was charismatic and smiled the whole time and asked if everything was great. I wish I could give this place more stars.
