I hired Charles Stewart for exterior painting and deeply regret it. His team painted my garage door shut without telling me. When I came home and opened the garage door, it buckled and jammed. He initially admitted fault and said he'd pay for repairs, but when he realized it'd cost more than expected, he changed his story and blamed me for opening my own door. Worse, his painters told us to open it again the next day, causing more damage and breaking my motor. Now the door is permanently damaged. He left paint stains on my driveway, didn't finish the job (no trim or tube painting, even when he said he would return), and ghosted me after I paid in full. Now I'm left needing a new door, repainting, and additional labor. I knew people like this existed, but I'm still surprised. He knows that people open their doors. He knows I did not know he had sealed it shut. (He should have told me BEFORE he sealed it shut, but I don't think he knew. I think his team did it without him knowing.) Regardless, he knew it was his fault and told me so when he offered to pay for the repairs. He didn't like that the door would have to be replaced. He even offered to pay for *some* of the door because it was his fault. However, I am not paying for any of what a business is responsible for. Shame on him for even suggesting it. We mistakenly hired Charles Stewart (son of Henry Stewart, owner of company) to paint the exterior of our house. He seemed fair and reliable. We paid 50 percent up front, he delayed the job two weeks and was never on-site to oversee the job or do a walkthrough. His crew was careless and splattered paint on every surface, including our new travertine, roof tiles and window screens. All of our brand new hardware was painted over, an exterior light fixture was destroyed by overspray and paint thinner, there were no clean lines or painters tape used, and the tops of our stucco pop-outs were left unpainted. The crew left cigarette butts in our yard. Come to find out, based on their licensure, this company cannot charge more than $5k for any given job and their contract states $6,500. We should have reviewed this company further before hiring them to do the job. I highly advise against using this contractor for your painting needs. read more

So I went to Angi's List to get some quotes on my roof repair. I had a couple asphalt tiles slip and one break. They showed up the next day looked at my roof and identified a second area of concern. They gave me a reasonable quote and left. I called around and got similar quotes but was very happy with.their professionalism and had them return to our house to finish the repair. Ive wanted to write maybe 20 reviews in my life and never made the time. this one i am compelled to. I contacted Charles Stewart Painting a few months ago as my home remodel was underway. i contacted him because of the great reviews, which seemingly were on an older yelp profile with many more reviews. also his ability to paint interior and exterior. Now there are only 18 reviews, and no mention of interior on his yelp page. what happened here? Charles came to my project to give me a bid, in which i was not present. this bid was for Interior and Exterior paint. he text me the bid all inclusive of both. we agreed on that price. I told him i had doors to stain as well as my vaulted timber truss patios, he said he will throw those in with the price. I then wanted to meet him in person to review the project details and he came then and confirmed his quote, assured me the project would turn out great, assured me he can stain and prep wood, even gives me names of stains he prefers. advised me that he uses dunn edwards paint and that he did not want to start that week on the exterior of the home (which was ready) and said he wanted to do it all at once. Now that my home is complete, i call him to schedule his services and he sets an apt with me the very next day to bring the contract by. 30 minutes later he texts me and says "sorry friend, i spoke to my crew and they are not comfortable doing your project." frustrated, i call him out and he says the text was meant for someone else (which was not true). to save face, and likely try and avoid a bad review, he still came by the home, and after walking the home, again tells me he is not going to do the project and kept saying "honestly, i'd be better going with someone else." "telling me about all the things he is not good at doing, like priming." His argument is that he doesn't know how to prime and/or paint fresh wood or drywall. he only paints pre-existing paints???? what painter does not feel comfortable priming wood or drywall. that is ridiculous. Clearly Charles must have not liked his bid and wanted to renig on his offer. He came to the house 3x, knew the entire time that it was fresh wood, fresh stucco and fresh drywall. why now is he not comfortable painting? this home should be a painters dream. There isn't even any masking or covering areas that need protection. i would not have cared if he retracted his offer the 1st couple days, but now i have turned down or away my other 3 bids, i have let my unfinished cedar wood beams fry in the sun and rain on his advisement, because he didn't' want to stain them and coat them until the inside of the home was ready for paint as well. so i let it sit the last 3 months getting weathered. I have also spent hours at dunn edwards choosing paint colors for him to start next week, because dunn edwards is who he uses. (I dont even prefer dunn edwards). and now he is not doing my project, i am supposed to move into the home in 4 weeks, and have to chase down now 3 more bids since i blew off the last 3 i received. Sure have loved all of the storms our valley has been getting this summer, but the wind finally took its toll on the roof of my patio and needed to be replaced quickly before any rain got in. Charles and Henry were quick to respond and were able to come give me a quote the same day as my incident. Materials were acquired very fast and the job was started within a couple of days. One of the guys from their crew was supposed to come back the following day for some final details and didn't show -- Charles was just a phone call away and fixed the issue immediately.
