Fantastic customer service and wide stock selection. As a Scottish guy, over in Boston for the World Cup, I needed an alternative to a sporran belt for my kilt. Counter staff helped direct me downstairs. The guy (Carrie?) was super helpful, and cut a light chain to size and attached a magnetic two sided key ring to hold together. He was great, particularly as I had lost my voice and it was clearly an unusual request. I've lived in this neighborhood for years, and this has been my go-to not only for products that work in the Hill's quirky old buildings and that I need in a hurry but also for the handyman service. Customer service has always been very good. Recently, the store recommended a handyman, Mick, for a couple of my small jobs, and he was by far the best I've found. He showed up the same day I called him. And, although one job took much longer than either of us expected, he solved the problem quickly and efficiently, with no added charges. Here is where one will undoubtedly find helpful service within the cheery walls of a small (read: manageable) non-chain hardware store much like the ones many us remember in our neighborhoods growing up. Given how many times I pop in this place you'd think I'm the handiest person in the world but I'm not. That title goes to my husband. Nonetheless I love roaming around hardware stores but the big box versions can sometimes leave me uninspired and overwhelmed. I come here now and again, to have keys made, for some kind of gadget, for advice on projects and to find just about any kind of household supply. Lately, I've been in paint sample mode since the 3 season porch is on the list for spring re-painting. Things can sometimes cost more than they would at Lowe's or Home Depot but the personalized service and the desire to support local businesses keeps me and many others coming. For those living right here on Beacon Hill, some of whom don't have cars, this place is a god-send as they'll deliver locally. It's packed to the gills with good stuff and good people. read more

Stopped in on our way to the July 3rd Pops on Esplanade. So hot, needed umbrella for shade knowing full well they would take it at the gate. The nicest gentleman came out of the store after us and gave us another one someone left behind. Umbrellas are a best friend standing in line in near 100 degree weather. So very nice of him. These folks are excellent! My kitchen table had a screw that was beyond stripped, and Jack mentioned that I could bring it by for him to take a look. He was able to get a screw out that 5 of us couldn't and I was able to finally move my table into my apartment. They've got everything you need and are extremely helpful. This is my first time leaving a Yelp review, because my experience at Charles Street Supply was outstanding. I was in desperate need of solutions to deal with completely stripped furniture screws (the rubber band trick only goes so far!), and the owner helped me through the entire process. He helped select an ideal replacement screw set, and he walked me through a more sophisticated method for removing the stripped screw. He even let me borrow his own screw extractor drill bit for the weekend to get the job done. The owner truly goes above and beyond, and I saw him interact this way with other customers to troubleshoot their problems throughout the store. The store itself has a good selection for quick repairs, as well as home goods perfect for someone in the neighborhood. Definitely worth stopping by! read more

It's really, really nice to have a local hardware store here on Charles Street. Surrounded by antique shops, boutiques packed with expensive clothes, jewelry, and gift items, this hardware store provides a spot for those practical things you often need in an emergency situation. Like flashlights. Batteries. Rat poisoning. Bug spray. Those sticky things that roll away the cat hair on your black pants. A new set of front door keys. A plunger. Their sidewalk displays feature really cute door mats, planters and tiny seating arrangements, perfect for that little balcony space in the summer. When it snows, they have rock salt, snow shovels, sleds and those little electric heaters that keep your toes warm. Yes, it is pricey. Yes, it is old fashioned (a quality I approve of). Charles Street Supply Co. is small but great for any nitpicky annoying repair needs. There's just enough selection as to not overwhelm a naive customer trying to pick out screws and washers (read: me). They're also very efficient and not super-expensive when it comes to replicating keys. Not like I really know how much keys go for these days, but the copies were functional, so that was enough to make me happy. People who works here are really rude, not friendly at all. I asked them to make copy of keys and half of keys do not work at all. It was not even the right size. When I went back and mentioned that keys did not work, they simply told me that "It should work". Well, keys they made was larger than my original keys and it is clear if you look at them. Why you think "it should work???" Overall, I will not go back to this place again. It is not worth to go there because they are not nice and give you attitude. Economy like this, they should know that if you want business, maybe it is time to learn costumer service? I would like to support small businesses around Boston, but I rather go to Home Dept instead. read more

Go here, they are that rare breed of experienced pro that seems to genuinely like human beings, even dumb ones. I sometimes attempt small DIY projects, mostly for home decor purposes, which means I have shamefully overspent and embarrassed myself at every hardware store and Home Depot in the state while experimenting (none too intelligently) over the years. I was trying to create neck notches for wine bottles in a small piece of unstained oak that would then be installed in a dresser I was repurposing as a kitchen buffet. Thought the neck holes would be the easy part ... but I was WRONG. I just needed the notches and didn't feel comfortable sending such a small job to a custom pro. Spent weeks pathetically carrying my sticks around to stores and carting home (expensive) crap solutions, trying to figure out how to achieve the half-circles I wanted. I rent in the city, so major equipment is out of the question, and my little house drill with various hole saws and bits was quite literally not cutting it. Be ye not so stupid: oak is the WORST wood possible for "experimenting". JV moves, and they all (rightly) laughed at me. At my wit's end, bearing a noble artistic refusal to compromise shape or quality of my neck holes, I finally wandered into Charles St Hardware a few blocks from my house, asking for ideas and bemoaning the devastating lack of a drill press in my apartment. With no hesitation whatsoever, these goddamn American heroes instantly offered the use of their drill press, conveniently located in the store basement. Not only was there no charge, the manager spent thirty minutes cutting my wine neck holes to spec for me, as I was clearly a liability. I brought him a sixpack for his trouble and my lifetime's undying devotion. Maybe they shouldn't enable idiots? Whatever, I'll be back. read more

This store does not have the most thorough stock of hardware (pretty light on electric supplies) but the staff have been nice and helpful for some emergency hardware situations I've had in the area. First there's all the obvious stuff: prime location, quaint space + terrific staff. I just went in to try out the Xootr Scooter, and Charles Street Supply is THE ONLY SUPPLIER in all of Mass. The gentleman on staff was not only helpful, he pulled down the scooter that I want to try, allowed me to try it on the sidewalk and street. This was a critical experience for me to decide on whether I'd buy this $250 scooter or now. His patience + practical nature was very appreciated. I wish these guys were in my 'hood. read more

Ok.... So, I don't live anywhere near this place, but I ALWAYS stop in when I come into the area. It is EXACTLY what I WISH my local 'hardware' store was/is, and they always seem to have that 'something' I've been looking for or thinking about. And another huge incentive, for me, beyond the truly wonderful staff, is the ubiquitous 'shop cat'. Just today, i went by and saw 'Totes' for my mid-tour 'kitty fix'. Adding to the chorus: I really like this place. It is not just a hardware store, it has EVERYTHING. For urbanites like me with no car, having a place like this within a 5-10 minute walk is a godsend. Yeah, it's expensive, but not outrageously so. You're paying for the convenience of being able to walk in and buy that random item without having to go through the hassle of a 90 minute round trip to get it at the silly South Bay Target in Dorchester. People are complaining about non-working keys here, but I've gotten keys made here multiple times and I've never had a problem, so take that for what it's worth. The guys in here are pretty cool, often joking around and stuff, which is nice. It's a nice homey, mom and pop-type place that you feel good for patronizing. read more

These guys are absolutely awesome. I bought a screen replacement for my iPhone 4 in amazon. It came with a broken screwdriver that made me broke one screw in the phone. I come to this store and I not only got the perfect screwdriver that I needed for just 4 bucks. They also helped me remove the broken screw with other tools (took them some time and patience to do it). Simply amazing how you can care so much about someone that is just spending 4 bucks in your store. read more
