Big disappointment for a 3 star hotel. Get ready to pay parking and have them tell you "Self parking " isn't considered paying parking no microwaves, coffee pot was missing main part. The whole thing was set up for the guest to pay pay pay. The front desk clerk couldn't barely speak English. The customer service after the stay was no help at all. My wife and I stayed at this hotel for a week. It was nice having a Publix Grocery store around the corner from the hotel. We felt safe there from the looters and rioters that have devastated the area after the peaceful protests. The staff was polite courteous and always able to assist in answering our question and meeting our needs. As a loyal Bonvoy member, I was excited to pick this hotel over one of the "courtyards" and other chains, boy what a let down. The first day, starting off with breakfast in the Concierge Lounge. Eggs, no sausage, no bacon, no meat. Eggs... and some breads you could put in the toaster. OK, that was lacking and disappointing, but off we went to enjoy our day. We got back to the room after a day of walking several miles in Charleston, only to find the room was as we left it. The maid forgot to do our room. We had to call down and request more towels just so we could take showers. Day #2, headed up to the Concierge Lounge again for some snacks and a drink. LOCKED!?!? Checked the hours on the sign to make sure I wasn't mistaken and confirmed, they closed the lounge more than a 1/2 hour early! WHY close it at all, but at least, why close it early?? I don't ask for much, but paying the premium to stay (only) at Marriott's, I've "earned" the Lounge access/perks. The Lounge experience really put me off and this was NOT a "full service" Marriott experience. read more

Very nice Marriott hotel on the Ashley River side of the peninsula. Walking distance to Brittlebank Park, the Citadel, the Riverdogs stadium, and the WestEdge development which includes a Publix. It has a very nice lobby and the front desk staff is very helpful and friendly . But the rooms are old smells musty . The bathroom are old and very small smells like mold . I am a titanium member! I have been traveling and staying in Marriott property for years! Our bed had BLOOD stains on the sheets. We arrived Friday, I didn't notice the stains until Saturday night. They were at the bottom of the bed. The only reason I notice the stains is because, I just happen to flip back the comforter to retrieve the remote. I was horrified! I couldn't believe I just slept in someone else's blood. I immediately called a manger and they were not present. So the night auditor moved us to a room on a different floor until the next morning. The following morning I go down stairs and speak with the manager (Sid) who agreed to comp one day of our stay and move us back to another pent house suite. We get the room keys and it's our previous room. When we walk in you, can that the room had been sanitized which made me feel a little better. I head straight to the bed and to check the sheets. I go to look and I see ANOTHER BLOOD STAIN! At this point I'm livid, however I'm still composed enough to handle this situation in a professional manner! I call Sid and he personally comes up with sheets to change the linen. At this point I asked him what can you do to rectify this situation. One free night is not acceptable and we are here until Monday. He goes to tell me that's it's a rust and that it came from the washing machine. I know the difference between rust and blood. I told him there shouldn't be any stains on sheets period, there's not excuse especially not human blood... that's disgusting!! At this point want to talk to someone over his head! He told me to give him a few minutes and he would call up with the information. This was around 11am. By 3pm I walk down there myself and ask him what was taking him so long. He stated that he was just waiting for the manager to come in and he would brief her on what was going on. I waited 45 minutes and called back down to the office. When Jenelle got on the phone all she did was offer an apology and 20,000 pts! I did not want that! I asked to speak to a general manager! What she fail to realize that this is a health hazard and it didn't happen once but twice. As a person is the healthcare field it made me sick to my stomach. Housekeeping and management needed to be held accountable! I was giving the titanium members number which I already had. Hugo and Izzie was a big help. They were able to help me create a case number. We attached photos as well. She reassured that the GM would reach out to us as soon as possible. She gave me more hope that then other managers . read more

The location is sub-par. It is common to run into homeless. The area around the hotel isn't maintained very well and that isn't the fault of Marriott but the city of Charleston. However, if you don't mind driving versus walking to things then it is a good jumping off spot. It worked for us. The bathrooms were too small and extremely dated and in need of TLC. The view over the river was nice but no balcony. The top floor seem to have balconies and I am not sure why they didn't include all rooms with balconies. The elevators were efficient and fast, which made for a better experience. The lobby is wonderful. The outdoor space is ok. The pool is listed as heated and was the reason we chose this hotel. It was not heated and in fact, it was ice cold. So overall it would be a 3 star in a different location. read more

The Charleston Marriott is one of my favorite hotels in Charleston. I really like the way this hotel was remodeled and transformed into its current form as the Marriott. I like the interior of the lobby with the marble, open space, natural light, plants, and all of the other decorations that it contains. I really like the views from the rooms as depending from the room location there is a view of the water or of the city that is very unique to the hotel. I like the swimming pool here as it is located perfectly in the hotel and easy to get to from the rooms and the fitness center. This place is excellent for business and meetings and has a great location that is easy to get in and out of. The staff here is wonderful and knows how to take care of their guests. read more

This really should have been four+ stars but... The room was spacious and the bed comfortable, a typical big chain big hotel. Location was ok, a little out of town but the half-hourly shuttle dealt adequately with that minor issue. The fact that there was a huge wedding on in the hotel and it seemed the wedding party was colonizing the floor we were on with noise and door slamming all night could not be blamed on the hotel. However, there was no functioning WiFi for 24 hours and the fact that the concierge lounge closed for the weekend at midday on Friday was inexcusable. Clearly, they cater primarily for road warriors and weekend guests are less welcome. Not cool especially as we had probably paid extra for the concierge level. read more

This is the worst Marriott I have ever stayed in. Checked in, received 2 rooms, and both smelled like cigarette smoke. One of the two rooms had a mold smell that just hit you in the face as soon as you walk in through the door. The receptionist put us in two different rooms 3 floors below our original rooms, and those ALSO smelled like pure smoke. I thought Marriott was a smoke-free hotel in the US! It isn't here. Even the hallways wreak of smoke. The view is also quite awful. Don't be fooled by the "courtyard view". If you are above the 2nd floor all you will see is an ugly rooftop with fans. Everything outside your window is all concrete. This hotel is supposed to be waterfront. It's not. Don't come here. Not worth the $339 I was paying a night per room. read more

Convenient location to MUSC and the Children's hospital. They have a special rate as well for ppl doing business or with family in the hospital, ask about it. The staff is very friendly. The hotel is clean and what you would expect from a Marriott. They have a sundry shop, concierge lounge, bar, restaurant and coffee/pastry counter. It appears they just renovated. There is a great outdoor area by the bar with fire pits and comfortable seating. I was not there for a meeting, but they had a good amount of meeting space. They have free parking as well. They are not far from the hustle bustle, restaurants, history of downtown Charleston. If you are a Marriott Reward member you can get free wi-fi in the guest room and you can sign up at arrival if you are not a member. read more

We decided to splurge for a weekend getaway. We love the Charleston area and the waterfront property sounded great. We loved the waterfront which was not Marriott. However, the property of Marriott was a huge disappointment. The property was showing its age inside and out. The Bistro was awful in quality of food, speed of any service and friendliness of staff. The cleanliness of the facility was good for a Motel 6 but for a Marriott property it was not good at all. We were overcharged because at check-in we were given a coupon for the Bistro. At check out when I asked why the coupon had not been taken off I was told that I did not qualify as a platinum member. My response was that I qualified because a member of the Marriott staff gave me the coupon. As much as they charged for the rundown, dirty and lack of service to argue with me over $20 tells me a lot about this place that I will not go back to not would I recommend to anyone. read more

Came to town for a baseball tournament. I was super impressed with the ground floor - it was beautiful and smelled heavenly. But, I was disappointed when we got to our room. The rooms are very outdated. Bathroom was super small and there was mold around the tub. The HVAC was horrible - even though we had the thermostat down to 66, the room never got below 70. It was hot, muggy and very humid. The "rooftop" bar is basically on the roof of the lobby - on the 3rd floor. The view is still nice and it was nice to get a drink on the property. The outdoor seating area was nice and they kept it straightened up during the week. The pool was a comfortable temperature, but the grounds around the pool were very dirty. There were beer cans at the edge of the pool that eventually blew in the pool when my son and I were swimming. There was also trash and broken chairs near the pool. It worked for our trip this time, but I don't know that I'd stay there again. read more

Great location . I would stay here again . The hotel restaurant offers a breakfast buffet for $15.95 . I ordered two eggs off the menu for $6! Thought that was pretty pricey for eggs so needless to say I did not eat there again . Pets are allowed , AAA, military and senior discount offered . Really nice place to stay. The lobby is really nice. Lots of people are hanging out inside and outside. The pool is clean and the towels are well stocked. The rooms are large. The beds are comfy. We had no issues during the stay. The only thing is the parking lot is far from the actual hotel entrance. Wifi is a bit confusing as well. Mixed feelings about the hotel and not sure we'd stay again. I was a legacy Starwood member and though Marriott's were the equivalent of Westins but I think they are more Sheraton. Hotel lobby and bar/restaurant area were nice. New Wine bar in lobby is a great touch and good idea. Even though we were given an upgraded room due to my gold status, the room was just oK. Very small tiny bathrooms, no robes (this is a difference from a westin) but overall the room was clean and comfortable. Are issues for our weekend stay were, the concierge lounge is not open on weekends? This is the second Marriott I have stayed at over a weekend and been told this. The roof top bar this tout as a highlight of this hotel was not open on Friday night - no reason given. The line to get a table to eat breakfast at 10am on saturday am was 10 people deep although there was ample tables. We decided not to wait 10-15 minutes for a table and went to the 'starbucks' line, which itself was 10 deep and had taken 20 minutes to get a couple lattes. They had 1 person working the coffee bar - making all the drinks and cashing people out. All the people working seemed nice enough and overall service was good - they just seemed very understaffed. Not sure if we'd pick this hotel again. We felt it was very overpriced for the experience. read more

If no Stars was an option - that's what this location would get. Without turning this into just a remarkable, and lengthy, rant - suffice to say that not only was our recent stay tremendously disappointing, but it also had a dramatic effect on the group we were there to see and spend time with - a wedding party. This location was chosen specifically for two reasons; location and on-site amenities to support a large wedding of over 320 guests. Rooms were asked to be blocked and set aside for what would be a very large contingent coming from as far away as California, and in addition the wedding party booked a top floor suite to act as a hosting and welcoming location...and were also told that the rooftop bar would be perfect for hosting large numbers of guests. Well to keep it brief - when the wedding party attempted to host the very first night of festivities as guests arrived; the suite they had paid for just for this purpose was immediately told they had to empty the suite and would have to use the lobby bar. When the party asked if they could bring the supplies that were pre-purchased just to handle the guests and not have to spend the outrageous $$ that is found at any hotel bar - of course they were told no. So the following day the wedding party went to the front desk and reminded them to have the rooftop bar open that evening so as to avoid another instance as the night before. Of course you guessed it - the wedding party was informed that due to first, cold weather, and then only after a lengthy discussion due to staffing - the hotel could not open the rooftop bar that night, or ANY night during the course of the stay. When the hotel was reminded that the rooftop bar was a selling point specifically mentioned to them during the selection process, the wedding party were told, "well it's not an option now." So, off to the already booked and of course more expensive suite, and of course, yet another knock on the door asking not only for the wedding party to once again use the bar downstairs (notice a trend? $$), but upon this visit it was suggested that the police could be called because the wedding party had "brought alcohol from outside the hotel" into the suite. Which, of course, is just ridiculous. Believe it or not, I could go on and add to the list if debacles and shortcomings, but I think I have put together a firm enough warning. Avoid this hotel - especially if you are planning on using them for a wedding or other large event. read more

It also smells very musty. For such a pretty and grand hotel I was really disappointed. It's in a really under construction area (not their fault I know) but stayed her for a work conference and choose to walk to campus. They also offer free shuttles. It's an older property, centrally located to historic market and beaches with an excellent view of the river. Top floor conserge service offers snack bar, drinks and afternoon meals. Lobby restaurant bar is well appointed and served a dandy thanksgiving turkey buffet. Bar pours a stiff drink. White marble lobby offers a hint of what's to come upstairs. Great beds made for a very refreshing nights rest. read more

The hotel rooms are tired. Need a refurb. Nice though. Great views. The outdoor Aqua bar has no seating and no table service. Fail. The bar and beautiful patio off the lobby- they do not have table service outside. Fail. Why? The best thing going is the concierge lounge and Ms Lilian. Best meal and conversation. And you can sit outside and eat. Very civilized. Not sure I'd ever stay here again or recommend it. Really far from downtown too. Oh and you pay for the hotel shuttle bus to downtown. This hotel was absolutely beautiful. I was a little concerned about it, when we first arrived. Maybe it was the cheesy yellow exterior paint color. But I had nothing to be concerned about. The hotel is beautifully decorated, the colors are bright and warm. The staff is very friendly. The beds was firm and the linens were fresh and crisp. I also love the lamp style that Marriott is using in their hotels now. The lamps actually have electrical outlets in the base, for plugging in your cell phone charger or i-pod. It's very nice not having to stand on your head looking for an outlet! Nice hotel, I would definitely stay here again. read more

We were duped by Hotwire! I chose a 4-star hotel in "downtown" Charleston and wound up with the Marriott which is located nowhere near downtown. At the very least, the downtown area should be walkable from the hotel. Unless 2.5 miles each way is your idea of a convenient walk, you will likely be disappointed. The hotel is convenient to absolutely nothing except a VA hospital. Every time we wanted to go into town, we had to drive and waste a bit of time searching for parking. I know they offer a shuttle from the hotel at $6/person, but it is fairly infrequent and doesn't make sense to take considering there is a free city trolley that they fail to mention, and if we really were downtown, we wouldn't need a trolley in the first place. The hotel itself was fairly charming in its lobby and common spaces, and doubles as a small convention center. The rooms were a different matter. Walking the hallway of our floor, it smelled of shampoo. There is no circulation at all, so the smell of cleaning fluids lingers about. In our room, because there was no circulation, our window was beaded with water drops. It always looked like it was raining outside. The only time we could get the water drops to clear up was if we kept the room at a very low temperature. It was all rather inconvenient. The tiny bathroom that required a maintenance call didn't help matters much. The downstairs coffee shop had some rather delicious coffee and sold sports drinks which was great, until I saw that the price for 1 coffee and 1 sports drink cost over $6. Ouch! The parking and internet were free, so that was cost effective at least. Breakdown: (room rate) $125/night + (fees) $27.30/night = too much money for the hotel. We actual stayed at the Mill's House via Hotwire for less money than this and had a much, much grander time in the heart of downtown. read more

this marriott was not within walking distance to downtown, but we were unable to move closer. there must have been a convention or something going on. but we did find perks to this place. if you are a gold member...free wi-fi and there is a concierge lounge that we took advantage of. the lounge had nibbles, coffee and a free breakfast. you can order drinks, which get charged to your room. during my stay, there was a super friendly hostess, who was able to point out some places to hit during our stay. she gets the 4th star for this hotel. the rooms were clean and spacious. my view wasn't much to rave over and the windows fogged up with condensation. still, it was a pretty good value. read more

This Marriott is the worst I've stayed in. From the get go I had issues with guest services. Refusal to honor group rates despite big Marriott's assurance there were rooms available at that rate. I was just told a Guest Services manager would have to call me back. A manager finally called me and left a voicemail saying she couldn't honor the rate as it was sold out (not surprising since it took a week to get a callback). Prior to arrival I used the app and asked to use suite night rewards for this stay. Big surprise, no response. Get to the front desk, they say they can't do it and I'd have to talk to someone from Guest Services the next day. Also, my Marriott credit card doesn't work because they don't have a chip reader... The beautiful check-in area only built up enough hope to set up the further disappointment when I got to the room. I was immediately greeted with a smell of mildew and room straight from the 90s, complete with carpet pulling up and dust on the lamps collected high enough you can see it from the doorway. I love Marriott. I have 100+ nights this year alone in Marriott brand hotels and I travel for work. If I wasn't here for a conference I would have left immediately. read more

We booked this hotel for a wedding over the 4th of July weekend. The hotel wasn't located downtown, but there was a free shuttle that ran every hour for guest would wanted to venture out. Unfortunately, we arrived in the afternoon so we did not get to take advantage of this service. The hotel nice and the rooms were clean and spacious! We had a 2 year old and needed a pak and play and the staff accommodated us quickly. The bed was really comfortable and I really liked that the thermostat was really quiet. Nothing worse than coming into a hotel with a separate air conditioning unit! We ordered room service for dinner and breakfast the following morning- the prices were very reasonable and delivery was very quick! The food was surprisingly really good. I dared to get the crab cake and it did not disappoint! I like that the standard egg order came with orange juice and coffee! The pool was great, it was clean and not over crowded. All in all, it was a nice overnight stay and I would recommend it to anyone. I wish it was downtown as it was a little hassle that I couldn't take my son to walk around, getting him in the shuttle and down there would have been tough especially if he had a meltdown and I was stranded without a way to get back to the hotel- in hindsight, I guess I could have gotten Uber to get me back... read more

We held a four-day event here in their Opal and Topaz ballrooms and were very very pleased. The banquet staff was all wonderful, the servers and bellmen were some of the friendliest people I've met, and everyone we encountered did whatever they could to help us with what we needed. I even met a very kind bellman who, when I couldn't find a bicycle rental shop who'd accommodate me, asked his friend's girlfriend to lend me hers so I'd have a chance to explore the city on my break from work. Talk about going above and beyond the call of duty! I'd give it 5 stars if the box lunches we were provided daily weren't so grody. Almost all of our participants mentioned how bad they were and it reflected poorly on us. Also the whole "pay $9.95 per day for your internet" thing, but we got around that with the help of a very obliging salesperson. read more

Not your typical Marriott experience. Unsafe environment and unprofessional management make this a hotel our entire wedding party would not recommend. Several doors were left ajar. Our room had someone who enjoyed our bed and bathroom just moments before we entered. The stairway door was also left ajar, allowing the occupants of the next door detention facility to help themselves. When management was asked about this major safety concern, as well as a multiple of problems with the 12 rooms we blocked off, they pointed fingers and were argumentative. Additionally, one of the bar/restaurant employees went through the facility yelling "we are closing! I'm going home! Everyone needs to leave now". When management was address on this, the guest was again dismissed. read more

Charleston Marriott, you suck. You were oversold and couldn't offer me another room when I wanted to switch. You gave me a musty room without a bathtub. Your desks are too high to sit at comfortably and I never got that desk insert you promised me. Your bathwater takes too long to heat up. The entrance to your terrace bar is ghetto - it looks like an emergency exit with a sticker on it. Your stairs layout doesn't make any sense and you elevators are slow. And lastly, you charge a fee for a shuttle downtown when there is a free trolley that stops right by the hotel that you don't tell anyone about. But you have lovely outdoor seating areas with firepits and a nice view of the water. Peace out Marriott. We had enough and checked out early. read more

We booked this hotel as it offered the most reasonable rate over a major holiday. The level of service was excellent - from the registration desk, bellman, shuttle driver to the bartenders. The décor in the lobby area was very attractive. There is a spacious patio with comfortable furniture to enjoy also. Our room was nicely decorated and comfortable. The bathroom décor had been updated but the tub area appeared to be original. Seems they should have updated that too when upgrading the rest of the room. Also, condensation appeared in the windows but neither of these interfered with the comfort of our stay. A little out of the way in terms of the historic district but they have a complimentary shuttle that runs every 1/2 or so and the drivers were great about accommodating you. read more

I recently stayed here and was quite impressed. This is a category V Marriott and it felt like it. The staff were extremely friendly and the building itself was very clean and well maintained. There is a nice outdoor pool area with several fire pits and outdoor seating. This restaurant has a concierge level and has both a cafe and restaurant onsite. The parking is free and is all around the location. The hotel is conveniently located on the west side of town so the traffic is nice and light. The next time I visit Charleston I'll certainly be stating here again --a very pleasant stay. read more
