I showed up here last Tuesday (you know, the day it snowed a lot before it rained and froze and all those roofs fell in?) in the hopes that they would save my ass with their shovel supply again. City Paint & Supply - Paint Stores Near Me - Cambridge, Massachusetts

Went on a Saturday at 1:30pm, and they were closed. No sign on the door or anything. Online hours and the hours in the window advertise they are open from 7:30am-4:00pm. Also their Sunday hours seem to be mixed as well as yelp says they are open on Sundays, but google maps says they are closed on Sundays. read more

I'm with STEVE B and Christopher M: This place sucks (but I disagree with STEVE that they're better than "those cocksuckers at..." because we gays would never give such atrocious service.) I went here yesterday to buy some Ben Moore paints. Like Christopher, I had to block the path of one of the three non-working employees in Paint to get him to acknowledge my existence. When he finally did, it took him about 5 minutes to figure out the paint color (despite me having the exact number and name.) Nevermind that most of the shelves have no prices and the place is a hot mess. I then go to check out and the whole time, the staff are loudly boasting about calling Hispanic women "munecas" (dolls) and how hot it is to cat-call them. Uhhh, yeah, they REALLY think you're hot, especially with that ponytail! I went outside, Purell'd, and vowed never to go back here. UPDATE: If you're looking for Ben Moore paint, drive to Allston and head to HW Foote - Amazing place, very knowledgeable, and... wait for it... professional! Utter crap. I don't know what would be worse, getting ignored by the staff or getting service. When most people say they got ignored somewhere, they usually mean that someone at least made eye contact and walked away. Not here, they literally went on about their business swearing and making really inappropriate comments as though I wasn't there. not even a nod, or a walk away. Although that's better than the customers who actually got service. Two asian guys with thick accents and broken english with spray bottles in hand asked "How much these?" To which the "salesman" responded "how much these?" in a poor mockery of their accent. Guess what buddy, that doens't make you funny, that makes you a jerk, and as if your attempts to ignore my existence weren't enough, that little episode will not only cost you my business but I'm writing to Benjamin Moore about you. As for the rest of the store - Bedlam. I had to gingerly step over/through the pushbrooms and other assorted merchandise that was taking up the entire floor to get to the paint chips. To get to the other paint chips I had to turn sideways between buckets of spackle and some motorized thing. Needless to say, I didn't explore, but from a quick survey from where I stood, the entire store was a similar disaster. Only because there is no "no star" button do they get a single star. I have been in the painting industry for 14 years and happily hold the title of Best of Boston Home and just dread going to this place. I don't ever expect preferential treatment just because I'm a painter. In fact I'm extremely polite and always happy to patiently wait my turn in line. Every time I go to this place I am treated a few ways ... Consistently. First off, the staff is rude. Not not helpful, but rude and always seemingly irritated that they have to wait on people. Secondly they are unhelpful. "Excuse me, can you tell me where ______ is?" ..... Silence or avoidance. Clearly the people here don't want to wait in people, they don't like working and they get a kick out of treating people like its a huge imposition. My best solution is to avoid the place like it may give me an STD. If you want good customer service and a helpful staff, go somewhere else. This place needs to be shut down or someone needs to open a can of whoop ass on the staff there and get new people in there. I'm done.... For now. read more

Stopped in when I was new to the area and needed a broom. I walked into the middle of 4 guys hanging out, sitting around just inside the entrance. I answered the "sup" greeting (the "what do you need" variety) and was led to the brooms. K. Got one. Took a while to ring up with 3 of the 4 guys now sitting directly behind me. Nothing inherently wrong with the merchandise/physical store that I could tell (not that I looked around), but when you contrast it to Inman Square Hardware just down the street, it deserves the two stars. The guys at the other place always seem knowledgeable, very friendly, approachably busy, and make you feel good about buying there instead of resenting your presence. read more

I had a great experience at City Paint. I get the keys to my new rental unit in Union Sq next Friday and the wifey and I want to paint it up, so we found City Paint because they carry Benjamin Moore. We had our colors picked out online, stopped into City Paint mid-afternoon on Saturday, and received great service. We walked in and actually approached one of the guys for assistance rather than expect to be helped by merely standing around (shocking, right?). When we told him we were painting our rental, rather than try to upsell us to the "Regal" grade paint @ $38/gallon, he suggested we just use the commercial grade @ $26/gallon. He took our colors and gave them to the guys in the back to mix up, and then proceeded to usher us around the store to help us find all the supplies we needed - trays, brushes, rollers, drop cloths, etc. As we were being helped, several other people walked into the store, and the guy helping us was quick to whistle to the back to get other employees out to the front to assist them. After the paint was done mixing, he rang us up and had one of the other employees box everything up and wheel it out to our car on a dolly. read more

We had an unfortunate incident with some shelves. Bought the cute kind that look just like the kind you'd find at Pottery Barn - you know - the ones that look like crown moldings. Anyway, so I bought the cheap knock-offs at Target. My poor husband tried to install them and they wouldn't go up! When he took them down, they had horribly scarred the gorgeous wall of our brand-new townhouse. So we looked at the 15 cans of left-over paint sitting in our basement. We tried 4 of them and none matched. Ugh. So we went to Home Depot and got some color sample swatches and found one that matched. Bought it, painted it and it was wrong. Ugh ugh. So THEN we took a chip from the wall to City Paint & Supply on Cambridge St. They computer-matched it and shook up a quart for me. AND they were super nice! The guy there even asked me when my baby is due (which was cool since I'm 4 mos along and no one has yet been bold enough to ask me if I'm pregnant - given my awkward shape, I could just be chubby). Long story short - these guys were super nice and they solved our ugly wall problem. Thanks City Paint!! read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!! I have been going to the Somerville location for multiple interior painting projects. The two young men that regularly work at this location frequently treat me like I'm an idiot. When they messed up my order (they gave me completely the wrong color, which I discovered mid project!) they showed no empathy for the huge hassle they caused me and showed no desire to make it right. Instead the guy yelled at me and told me "go shop at Home Depot." There are other paint stores in town and I will be getting my Benjamin Moore paints at Modern Hardware in Medford from now on. read more

They were really unhelpful. Ignored me for a while and then when I went to buy something, asked the salesperson's (a man) advice and he said, "yes for ladies". Will not be going back there. Great paint and supply shop. You can not buy Benjamin Moore paint at the big box stores, so we started to go to City Paint when we had to tackle painting our entire house. There selection is good and I also had a good experience with the service. They were fast to mix up some samples and were helpful to point out a tool that was good for trimming. LET ME TELL YA...I am in love with this trimming tool and it's all thanks to the handy staff at this store. During our first visit to this location, we had an issue with a price that rang up on their machine wrong and they kindly corrected the issue. read more

I've been here many times to get paint for projects, and they're always perfectly civil, and helpful. I usually wander around the paint chip aisle for a while until I decide what I need. While it's true that they don't exactly run up to request what I need - usually a polite, "Hello, can you help me?" works just fine, once I need something specific. It is after all, a paint store. read more

I've made two visits to this store since moving to Inman Square. The first was an emergency run when I ran out of the paint I was using for my bedroom mid-wall. The guys at the store were courteous and quick about mixing up my special request. On the second visit I was exploring colors for my living room; they have a great selection of small test-size paints and even threw in the test brush for free! It's also a huge plus that they carry Benjamin Moore. read more

My experiences are with the City Paint Store in North Cambridge on Mass Ave, not Inman Sq. I have been into the the store 3 times in the last several weeks. Each time, I felt that the staff was utterly indifferent. I agree with previous posters who said that it was hard to even get the attention of staff. I know that they must get the same questions over and over about paint from home owners. But that is no excuse. I also felt that because I was a woman, I was treated as a know-nothing (in fact I am an architect with 40 years of experience in fairly complex paint issues and the project for which I was inquiring was a large commercial one). I gave up and went down to Johnson Paint in Boston. (They have another store in Waltham apparently). The excellent and responsive service I was night and day from City Paint. I have instructed the contractor in this case to purchase the paint and materials (at least $2000 in this case) at Johnsons preferably...anywhere but City Paint. In summary...rude help and not all that great an understanding of paints. read more

Always find what I need, and someone to help me find it. I've been here a few times, since I gave up in disgust on City Paint North Cambridge, who are horrible. I've always received pleasant, knowledgeable service. The one time they messed up mixing a paint color (the same color name can mean completely different colors for different paint manufacturers), they immediately mixed it another paint to proper color, and they were nice about it. read more

City Paint used to be an efficient and well run paint store very much focused on customer service. Today, the store is staffed by people with no concept of customer service, and minimal competence. As an example, I have been a customer for about 25 years. With 8 apartment buildings, we use a lot of paint. Today, I needed a quart of mixed paint. I waited 45 minutes, without explanation or apology for the delay, and then they produced the wrong color, having refused to write down the formula I gave them, insisting they could remember. You will, believe it or not, get far better service at Home Depot ( although no Benjamin Moore paint!) read more

i recommend this store for anyone that is doing a diy or having someone paint there house. i love to come to both the cambridge stores. I found that when i have a question about a diy project the guys are really helpful & friendly. They all make you feel welcomed when you walk in. i love the interior designer on mass ave she is very kind and helpful when trying to match colors.she has a great eye to match and combined colors. i think that the small sample sizes are awesome too! read more

Me And my girl friend needed paint for her grandmothers house in somerville so she said that there is a paint store down the street. So we get there and this man I think his name was flavio asked us if we needed help. We asked him some questions about what paint we should use and he was very knowledgeable. I think he owned the place or was the manager because he knew were everything was And knew the prices of everything. He told his staff what color he needed and they got it right away. They also put it in our car. He was very friendly and ill recomend it to anybody anytime. read more

City Paint & Supply is never good. I've gone three times, only because it is next to my apartment and easy to access. It always takes a long time, I'm always made uncomfortable by the oggling employees while I wait, and the customer service is in general poor. I recently had an especially bad experience, where I pointed to a yellow color I wanted, named it, and read off the two numbers next to it. When I went home I found myself with a completely different color than I had asked for-- purple! I called them up to ask if I could come in the next day and exchange it, and the employee got really mean and defensive. I kept saying, "Hey, it doesn't matter whose fault it is, I just need to know I can come in and get the right color tomorrow," but he was determined to make me feel bad about a mistake that he made. He ended up telling me that if I came in the next day, he would refuse to help me. What happened to "the customer is always right"? read more
