We've typically gone to Charlies about 1-2 times a year, basically when we need something our local grocery doesn't carry (or is out of). However I'm becoming convinced this is akin to a 'big box store' among meat markets - great if you want bulk cuts at moderate prices - the common denominator cuts if you will. They don't appear to be a true 'butchers', as the term is normally used and can't compete (speaking of quality/variety) with the upscale markets available nowadays. Today I went for veal. I'd swear I'd gotten it there before, but was told they don't carry it. I found it as well as many other fine cuts at one of these markets. The venerated local staple that is Charlie's meat market. In the words of Otter from Animal House, "I'll be brief." (No need to be verbose when the point is self-obvious.) Friendly staff, great prices on the meat, for the most part. Their side items and add-on are moderately priced (the twice baked potatoes are a steal), though I've found some items less reasonable. The filets have been and are what you'll write home about (or, more appropriately, be driven to write a Yelp review about); quite simply: BUY THE FILETS. I was also pleased to find an authentic line of Düsseldorf mustards on my last jaunt. I'm not sure where they source from, and that would be appreciated. I don't need to know that the cow's name was Margaret, or that she was a Capricorn, or that one of her herdmates chews cud WAY too loud when in the pasture; but if I knew if the filets were grass fed, local, etc., etc., (all that stuff really conscientious people need to know) it'd be appreciated (but not at all necessary, given the prices and the relative quality are unmatched anywhere else in town that I know of)). I've been going here for 23 years and my family for close to 40 years!! But lately, they have 1/2 the inventory (and coolers), steaks are considerably more than Costco's Prime and not near the quality. It's a decent size meat market with a lot of product and cuts that looked pretty good (I was eying their flank steak, for sure). Charlie's is an old fashioned meat market that's been around for years in Memphis. Both the high quality of the meat, plus the extremely reasonable prices, makes this one of my regular stops on grocery shopping day. They have a great selection and very knowledgeable and friendly butchers who will wrap up your cuts in crisp, white paper and hand it to you with a smile. Always liked Charlie's for their filets, tenderloin, charcoal and seasoning selections. Called today and asked if they sold sirloin caps. Any butcher cuttting primals and subprimals should know what I'm looking for. It's sold all over the world. Sirloin cap, picanha, rump cap or culotte depending on where you're from. First the guy said "We don't sell sirloin". When I pressed him and explained what I was looking for he said, "We sell sirloin tip roasts." When I explained further what a sirloin cap was and asked if they could cut me some he said they don't do that. I guess Charlie's either isn't a butcher shop or I got some kid that knows next to nothing about butchering. Glad I didn't ask if they could cut me some teres majors. Probably would have hung up on me for speaking some foreign language. I think the lesson here is Charlie's apparently isn't a butcher they are a meat market- like Kroger, Costco, Sam's, etc. I was expecting more of a butcher. I can buy cryovac subs anywhere and cut them myself. read more

Stopped at Charlies for some meat to put in my red beans I was cooking and as I walked around I was disappointed in the selection of meats. Most of their meat is frozen with only a small fresh meat case with limited items. I settled for the unsmoked andouille that was good but would have been way better smoked. Overall I thought it would be a good shop to order specialty cuts, etc but their ready case I was very disappointed. read more

Charlie's Meat Market is the only place that my husband will buy his steaks. And I don't blame him. Charlie's is an awesome meat market with reasonable prices and top cuts of meat. The butchers are super-friendly and experienced, and there's just something about the cuts being wrapped up in that white butcher paper. Back in the seventies my parents always purchased steaks on weekends from Charlie's Meat Market; I personally never liked the place; some people was treated different. Yesterday a group of us decided to have a steak cook out for Oklahoma and Oklahoma State game tonight. After all these years I made the mistake and stopped by Charlie's Meat Market 4790 Summer Ave. When I arrived that morning two people were behind the meat counter and one was wiping down the counter near the cash register; no one said a word as I walked around the store. I stopped over by the counter at the cash register; the one wiping the counter never looked up. I said excuse me, he never stop wiping. By then I knew I wasn't buying any steaks from them; I asked for some breakfast sausage; he pointed to the corner freezer. We love Charlie's meat market. It's always spic-and-span clean and their customer service is above and beyond. One of my special dishes that I make is bone-in prime rib (I use Paula Deen's foolproof method and highly recommend it, should you want to make it yourself) and Charlies is where I get my roast. Of course, they have your everyday staples as well, like steak and ground beef. If you need anything special, call them and they will make it happen. It's just a pleasure to shop here. read more

Charlie lost a customer today. They only sell flank steaks in large amounts. I'm single and asked that they cut a 2 lb flank steak into 4 half pound steaks so I could freeze some. They refused. Stated they're too busy to run a knife through the steak three times. I'll get my meat elsewhere. I like Charlie's Meat Market. It's one of the few places in Memphis to buy fresh meat besides Kroger. The ground beef is very good. There is a good amount of fat in the ground beef, which makes for some juicy burgers. Charlie's supplies the ground beef to Tops BBQ, and is ground fresh daily. A lot of people in Memphis love this place for steaks to grill at home. The appeal of a meat market is not lost on Memphis---- we like our grills here, although steak is an afterthought in a town that celebrates Pork. The steaks at Charlie's are a good value. They're not particularly good beef----fresh, but below the Choice and Select in chain Grocery Stores. There is a reason they're so cheap. I'm not sure where exactly these steaks grade, but I suspect they're Select minus or Standard plus ----not bad, but hardly marbled enough to be my go-to steak for a special meal. What I like at Charlie's is the interesting stuff for grilling that you might find here. They switch inventory here a lot, and their prices are good. Marinades, Sauces, Natural Lump charcoal, etc.-----you can count on Charlie's to have something interesting that you didn't know you needed until you walked through the door. The service here is very good. The meat guys will cut steaks at your direction, and they have all of the popular cuts. I shop here for the ground beef and for interesting sauces. You will find a reason to like this store also----- just don't go thinking the steak here is high-grade beef. It's not bad, but clearly a lot of people on Yelp lack steak-sense. read more

I have been coming to Charlie's Meat Market for awhile now, this place never disappoint at all. Their meat are always in a highest quality. My family and I loves their filets and the prices are very reasonable. Also love the chickens, ribs and some of the rubs and spices they offer. As for customer service, they are great! They're always willing to help and will do special orders and cuts of meat. Let them know what you want and they will make it happen. Again, just good people working behind the counter. Charlie's is a great meat market, best meat for the price in town. While you will find a little better quality meat at the Folk's Folly shoppe- you won't find a better cut for the price than Charlie's. They are also so nice here. I have been going here for years and it's been in the same location off Summer Ave. My ballet studio was located right down from here when I was a teenager and we would go get sliced cheese and meat and crackers for lunch every Saturday. Got ribs and chicken last weekend and got the bacon wrapped filets tonight and they were great. I got 3 filets, seasoning, and marinade for 30$. Not a place in Memphis you'll find that deal. This place may be OK to find the occasional deal especially if you need large quantities, but if you desire and know real quality, then you should pass or at least lower your expectations. I think this place holds an allure to locals simply because it is likely one of the last, if not the last, shop that even comes close to resembling the old fashion butcher shop. On a Saturday, this little market is a constant stream of traffic. From burgers to filet mignon and big bags of fresh-frozen veggies, this market has quality product...and at prices far better than Kroger (I hate the stranglehold Kroger has on Memphis). And for dog lovers, this is a great place to pick stew bones. I throw them in the freezer and give them to my dogs like ice cream treats (they chill out for hours). I was at Charlie's meat market today. I bought a sweet potato casserole in the refrigeration section. I didn't realize that it was thawed when I purchased it. After I got home and was ready to put it in the freezer to use tonight for dinner. So I realize that it us thawed and on the box it says KEEP FROZEN.. (there was only 3 or 4 in the compartment.) I called the store and they said that they compartment turns off every 15 mins. I told the man that if it was frozen it wouldn't have thawed completely in 15 mins. I said how long has that casserole has that casserole been thawed out. I don't know was my answer. So back in the car.. I got my money back but I questioned why this was not in the freezer department. With that the man who was smug attitude and look and said it goes in that compartment and point as the compartment. I've been buying my meat from Charlie's for several years now. Customer service is consistently great & the quality of meat is excellent. I even though its a 30 minute drive to get here, its worth having my ribs or Boston Butts prepped the way I like it (try asking Kroger to pull the membrane off your ribs, it won't happen). Good if you want to buy a really cheap piece of meat. Not great if you are looking for nice quality. That alone would be fine. I have bought meat their for my whole adult life. However, the folks there don't seem to know anything about meat quality. I specifically asked one time about the grade of meat. The employee emphatically told me that all their meat was USDA Choice. The next time I went in I asked if they ever received in any Prime or if I might be able to special order. First, the attendant literally had no idea what I was talking about and had to get someone else. He told me that everything they had was Select, except for the things labeled 'Premium' which were Choice. Given all the different answers, I am not confident anyone there knows anything. Since it is a meat market, you should be able to answer very simple questions. It is a fine place if you simply want something cheap. Not really impressed anymore. read more

If you want freshly cut steaks at a reasonable price, this is the only place in my mind. Fresh ribeyes are around $8/lb, with bone in ribeye options available as well. The meat always tastes great and is far cheaper than Kroger. They have quite a few fixins to go along with the different meat options as well. I usually swing by and grab two basic ribeyes and two potatoes on the way home. My cost is around $15 usually. You can't beat a fresh ribeye dinner for two for just $15. read more
