Recently purchased a used Subaru at Charlie's. The sales pers was new but seamed knowledgeable. We were handed off to the sales manage, this is where the deception started. After securing financing we were then handed off to the financial person. He had his own agenda, pushing the expense extended warranties. Keeping us distracted never discussed the price and deposit. Later we were bothered by this and looked over the paperwork. We found the window sticker that had never been applied to the car. It was $8000 more than the sales person told us. Actually it was the MSRP of this vehicle. When we went in to discuss this, we were told the sales person was no longer there. Also, the financial person was let go for his deceptive methods. When we asked about the difference in the price we were told used cars were often more. My research showed that the price we were told was the average for that car when we purchased it. NEVER, EVER Purchase a car from any of Charlie's franchises. I don't care how many free car washes I get it'll never make up for the money that I feel they stole from us. read more

If you want to buy a car from a dealership where you can also feel good about getting it serviced- this is it! I bought a 2014 crosstrek this spring and they were great- I worked with a sales manager before hand via email to figure out what I wanted and what was in my price range so that they day I came in (I live 1.5 hours away) I only had to test drive two cars. The whole process was painless. The free car washes are awesome too. Today I brought the car in to be serviced and they did a great job, gave it a full lookover (no extra charge) and explained everything they did very clearly. They also keep excellent records so you can see areas where you might need repairs in the future (brake wear, under carriage wear, etc) so you can prepare (i.e. Save up $$). They use an automated service to send you reminders about making service appointments and even have a reward points system- I got $20 off my bill and after 4 more oil changes will earn a free oil change! The biggest thing was the customer service: they have a shuttle service to take you somewhere while the car is being worked on. I was starving and was hoping to grab a bagel before going to TJ MAXX. When the service manager called the shuttle they said they can't make multiple stops, so the manager ended up taking me himself! They called once the work was done and came and picked me up. Funny side note- literally EVERY guy in the service department has a beard. And not some trimmed lumbersexual short beard but legit long-a$$ beards! read more

When we decided to replace our 17 Forester XT with a 21 Forester I called literally every Subaru dealer in the state. Out of the dealers willing to sell for under MSRP, Jay at Charlie's quickly provided me with a quote that only one other dealer could get close to. Not only did Charlie's stick to their pricing during the ordering process, but they bent over backwards to make the experience one we were pleased with. Further, the trade value for our car was $7k over what the Saco dealer was willing to pay. Worst dealership in central Maine. Rude, uncaring receptionist....unprofessional, zero knowledge of Subaru automobiles and from a "sales supervisor", on hold for twenty minutes waiting for service tech... and the ads while waiting on hold say " over forty techs available for immediate answers to your question! All the hassles you could imagine and you just want an easy answer to a sensor question...and during an emergency that required some attention. Grrr...Last vehicle I will buy from Charlies. And that includes Toyota even though they have good service! Strongly recommend you buy from anyone but Charlies Subaru! They do not care and just want your money. I will go to Lee's! read more

They were able to work us in and got us back on the road quickly and for a reasonable price. We were thankful for the shuttle to take us back to our hotel while they performed the repair. I was very impressed with the service I received at Charlie's Subaru. I told them what I wanted and what I was willing to spend, and they helped me find the perfect car at the right price (for cheaper/used cars, go to the public wholesale lot). Everyone I interacted with was a great mixture of friendly and professional. I was encouraged to test drive any car I wanted to consider, and ended up finding one I wanted. Although they tried very hard to get me to buy it that day (can't blame them), I went home and waited a day to consider and to get my finances in order. Since it was snowing by then, I figured the chances of someone else coming to snatch up the car were slim to none; besides, they would have called me in that case. One thing that stuck out as being very helpful is that if you cannot get a ride to Charlie's, they will have someone come pick you up to bring you there (of course this makes sense for them to get people there to buy their cars, but it also is a nice service if you, like me, have unreliable transportation which is probably why you want to buy a car that doesn't suck). The next day, I came back to finalize the deal (I got a ride; I felt this was a more empowering move than having them come pick me up). I ended up spending quite a bit of time waiting because they were rather busy, but since it was a snow day, there was pizza from the Pizza Stone to munch on while I passed the time. Yum! What a pleasant surprise. I finally walked out with keys in hand, a smile on my face, and a lot less money in the bank... but it was time to upgrade so it was definitely worth the chunk of change I had to give up. A few minor issues presented with my new used car, including seat belt locks that don't quite function properly, and they agreed to have these issues fixed at no cost to me. Definitely a great place that is obviously highly concerned about keeping up their solid reputation. My only gripe, and it is minor, is this: they boast about their free car wash, but from what I can tell, there is always a huge line for it on nice sunny days. Maybe in the future I'll just have to get my car washed on cloudy days. :) read more

I had done my homework and contacted 5 dealers in Maine. I new from TrueCar what the car I wanted should sell and and from Kelly Blue Book and USAA what my trade-in was worth. After an initial offer, they asked what I would do. I told them, and they met my demand without further negotiations or having to walk out the door. Their price on my trade it was better than I had seen away; I believe that they could meet it because Charlie's had a dealership for that make as well. I was frankly surprised that I could get my price without having to walk out of the dealership on the first visit. They took the time after sale to go over the vehicle for delivery. I like my Outback Limited; the eyesight electronics are terrific. read more

This was a bad experience. Throughout our 44-yr. marriage, we have owned 8 Subaru's beginning with our first in 1978. I was trying to turn in my Forester, which I leased to see if I liked the car. I did not. They were misleading in their approach, rude in their attitude, failed to allow us to turn in the car that day, and wanted to charge us for 4 tires, which over the length of the lease should have been normal wear and tear. The rep was so keen to sell us the car, he just glossed over the two issues we raised as not really there (poor acceleration and limited rear vision, which were both true in the long run). It was all charm and sweet-talking. He glibly told me that yes, that car was the color I wanted, until I pointed out it didn't look like the photos. I was stranded in Augusta without an oil fill tank cap (dropped it in the engine...oops), and all the auto parts stores were out of them. The parts department of the dealership had closed, but I begged someone from sales to help me out. They initially didn't think they could because they were from a different department, but then one of the employees took pity on me, my husband, and my baby, and gave us a cap for free. I can't think them enough for their kindness. We would have been totally screwed without them. Shows you the kind of people they have working there. I wish I'd gotten the employee's name!
