We've always had good service with Charlie's Tropic, so I'm mystified with all the negative reviews. As evidence, we've had them do semi-annual service for our central AC/heat system for at least the past 15 years. We just had that service today, and our 18-year old system, though aging, is still going strong. FIRST - we're located in Jacksonville, Florida. Not sure why my profile is stating elsewhere. Charlie's team previously did great work with coil and duct cleaning for our AC. We gave them a 5 star review. We want to take that back. Because of this great experience, we used Charlie's Tropic for our home office. Chris Johnson came out, gave us the sales spiel. Assured us that what he could do what we wanted, an AC unit that controls humidity and leverages cool to dry capabilities. Understand, we are warranty fiends. EVERYTHING we purchase above a certain monetary amount must have a solid workmanship warranty, to include money back guarantee if we don't love it. EVERYTHING. If it doesn't, WE DON'T GET IT. MANY times during this presentation, we asked about this AND the humidity control, which is VERY important. He promised a money back, one year customer satisfaction guarantee. We've had humidity issues, leaky AC (they say that ALL ACs leak, it's completely normal, btw) They've been out 3 times to fix said issue, always finding something that wasn't installed correctly. The closet that they put the AC in doesn't close around it. They didn't measure the unit to fit, saying we can rebuild our closet AFTER installation, or have no door on it at all. As this is my workplace entry, this is an eyesore, not an answer to THEIR problem. SITUATION 2: This one's a doozy. On Nov 21 21, a worker was sent into our attic space to inspect the vents to see what was wrong with the AC. HE SAWED THROUGH 5 LOADBEARING TRUSSES, and cut into the wrapping on live electric wire. He provided Chris Johnson photos of the cut trusses. However, no one told US. My husband tried to find where the humidity was coming from himself, crawling around around 12/15, and discovered these cuts. He sent a video of this to Chris (our POC) immediately, to which Chris then replied "it is mindblowing that someone cut that." However, the next time that Chris & team came out shortly after this, he showed us the images that the man had sent him ON THAT DATE of what he had done and sent them to us via text. We finally involved the owner Charlie, also a bad experience. We had an appointment (solid time, no window) for Charlie and his contractor to come. Charlie was 45 mins late, while his contractor was an hour late. Again, we are not living at the home, so this is time away from work and life for us. No apologies for being late. Once his GC arrives, he went through the obvious structural damage in the suite, stating that the damage was already there. We have many witnesses that can confirm against this. We also had a structural engineer inspect. He went through EACH item, to include the attic, and said "cutting trusses alters the load path from the roof to the foundation of the structure which will result in structural damages such as moved walls, cracked ceiling and drywall, and possible structural failure of the home." Charlie's GC didn't even enter the attic, and had a plan without even attempting to survey the trusses. Charlie and his GC tried to minimalize the damage. When trying to get this issue handled effectively, Charlie told us to contact the dealer about the AC unit leak, and his insurance would handle the claim for the trusses. His insurance DID contact us-wanting US to pay the damages, then they'd pay us back, or use OUR home insurance to pay. We're done with this company, completely. AC still leaking, house still shifting. Charlie's answers to the humidity? Seal the air leaks into the home. THIS COMPANY is the reason we have more unsealed leaks. We contacted Beth, as we want to collect the money back guarantee. She sends us to Chris who states, "sorry, you don't have a warranty", and provides us a contract we didn't sign. We have asked Chris to send us all documentation that we signed. He has not, nor is he communicating with us any longer. We are now seeking legal counsel. read more

Did not fix problem and uttered comments of gender-based discrimination. Have informed info email line, and no response has come yet, in 5 days since emailing. There was a problem with the air conditioning making buzzing noises. Mother, who owns the residence, said I should make an appointment with Charlie's Tropic. Followed mother's advice, made appointment. Seems like mother has a plan where repairs are included in a prepaid cost. Repair began by serviceworker Randy. Did not fix problem; air conditioner is still making buzzing noises. In the middle of the repair, he made the following remarks: Do you get hot when the air isn't on or it's hot outside? I answered yes, as expected. He said to the effect of "In all my years of doing this, I've learned you can't cool a hot woman... do you get it?... I like to joke with my customers." I gave him a look of shock of disgust, which he read. He then said "I hope I didn't offend you with that joke...I'm a married man, I know what a hot woman looks like." He proceeded to show me a picture of his wife. Look, I've been raped, assaulted, and harassed in separate incidents in my own residence. His comment triggers flashbacks to those incidents and nightmares. He didn't ask me if it's ok to make that discriminating "joke" or to discriminate against me on the basis of gender. He didn't ask me if he makes the joke, then am I likely to have nightmares or other unpleasant results. He didn't ask me if I've been raped, assaulted, and/or harassed in my residence before. I had no idea to expect he was going to make those comments and call it a joke. I needed a repair on the air conditioning done; I didn't expect it to cause me to be discriminated or relapse into nightmares from the abuse I've already endured through. I had just worked through nightmares in counseling; now I've relapsed, been awake through wee hours of nights, and I'll have to work through it again. Wouldn't you expect the management to at least respond with an apology? Well after almost a whole week since I reported to the info line, they still haven't made any response. Do not use this business. Even if you haven't been raped, assaulted, or harassed before, save yourself from your first harassment with Randy's so-called joke. If you haven't been raped, assaulted, or harassed, please stand in solidarity with those who have been and don't support this discriminatory business practice, calling you out un-wantedly and un-called-for as a hot woman. For years we had ongoing problems with our aging combo/package unit. It used to freeze up regularly until Charlie's installed a temperature sensor on the coil. Explained that i had what smelled like an ELECTRICAL FIRE due to a faulty operating heating system, obviously an EMERGENCY. Was assured by rep answering phone who spent endless time taking down all my info, that she'd "pass the msg onto ownership right away." wait. wait. wait... no call back, nothing. I have to admit I was concerned at first I could not locate much for recommendations online. Thought I would try them because they serviced our unit in the past before we bought the home. Randy was super, Fast and Deanna was friendly. Their service charge was $59 and excellent in my mind but... I Would have given them 5 stars but.....the 30amp relay contact they replaced, I was charged $199 for and in this day and age I found them online for as low as $42.35 including shipping and that is me buying just 1. I am sure they have local vendor who sells them in bulk for a much cheaper price. So although the Service Charge was reasonable the parts expense I Believe was raised to keep the service reasonable. I compare it to E-bay and you may pay $59 for an item but they charge you $200 for shipping. I Understand the concept just makes me feel taken to some small degree. read more

We've had them for 2 years after installing one system and performing twice annually servicing and checks on both. Now they come in and tell me how bad one unit is due to rust, leaks, etc. and it should be replaced in near future. I don't believe all this has happened in six months and if they were doing good inspections and servicing it should have been caught on last semi- annual servicing. Paying almost $300 a year to detect and prevent this type of damage and they take absolutely no responsibility for anything; but want to be one to replace system. Amazing! I think they are dishonest. They quoted me 460.00 for a fan motor and then ended up charging me $1260.oo I complained to the owner . He said it was bad communication and the company had a meeting to work on this and he was sorry. I told him for that kind of money I could have almost replaced the entire inside unit and probably would have if it was quoted correctly. Two months latter the 7 year old unit died with multiple leeks and had to be replaced. This company performed a bait and switch and the owner didn't seem to care. I will tell everyone I know not to do business with Charlies Tropical heating and Air. They seem professional but don't let them fool you. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Brent and the team that installed my AC. From the beginning Brent had wonderful communication, even up to this morning making sure that I knew that they were on their way. Brent showed up to make sure that the crew knew exactly what needed to be done and put in some sweat equity of his own. This company thrives in a boom Northeastern FL economy in spite of itself. If the job is relatively uncomplicated, I imagine they can get it done satisfactorily. But when things don't go right, look out. Shame on me for taking issue with shoddy work. I was subject to insult and a lot of "attitude." Eventually the issue was resolved, but not before I got someone else in to correctly diagnose the problem. I "inherited" this company when I bought my house two years ago. I have been in the facilities management business for over twenty years and I can tell you that service is the most important factor in choosing any vendor. When my HVAC unit died back in January of 2011 on one of the coldest nights of the year I started calling AC contractors. After leaving messages with several I called Tropic heating & Air. They answered the phone and had a service person out that same day, the unit was DOA. The next day I met with their sales person and we found a system that would replace my old unit. Installed the next day and got the service contract (you want that) There service people are great and I would recommend Tropic Heating & air to anyone. I have a Bryant unit and it works great. We've used Tropic for over 12 years. The service is professional, knowledgable, thoughtful, prompt, and considerate. I find them to be fair and pretty reasonably priced. They offer advice, but do not do pressure sales. They've done regular maintenance and replace our main unit. They have recommended replacing our air handler which is obviously on its last legs, but we haven't had the money. But when the time comes, Tropic will be the only company we'll call. read more
