I really have to give it up to the shop owner, Darl. He reached out to me, really wanting to make it right. I'd have to say that customer service is something that makes or breaks business and I'm glad that Charmed Life takes customer service seriously. He offered to touch up the tattoo himself (for free), which I really appreciate. I had to regretfully decline the offer since I live in San Francisco. Maybe I can arrange something if I visit again (who knows when that'll be!). Really sad since no one wants to fix it over here, even with pay! :( Anywho, I've added an additional star for Darl and his customer service. I have had 2 tattoos done at Charmed Life and I have never been disappointed with the final product. The parlor is clean, the artists are welcoming, and the work is phenomenal. Fair warning, they charge $200 hourly for medium to large tattoos, so it can get pricey depending on what you are looking to have done. Trust me when I say you are paying for quality. My artist, Tony, specializes in black and grey realism. I wanted a black and grey waterfall with a rainbow shooting through the middle. He was honest with his opinion (he didn't like the rainbow idea), however he gave me exactly what I wanted and it turned out beautiful. He usually doesn't work on Sunday's but he made an exception for me when I scheduled the tattoo, so he is relatively flexible if he can make it work. I first got work done here a few years ago by an artist who is no longer at the studio. He did a really awesome job and the price was very reasonable. I have been back twice since then and worked with Joe on both. He does amazing work with color, and is super honest if you suggest something that he thinks won't look right. There are a few artists here, and in addition to their awesome tattoo work, they are all artists of other mediums. They all have work on display all over the shop, which is great to look at while being tattooed, and they are happy to answer any questions you have about their work. The atmosphere is very comfortable, the music is great, and the prices are fair. If you are looking to have anything done, one of the guys here can handle it. read more

This shop is totally boss. I'm in the process of getting a neotraditional half sleeve/coverup of some decidedly ugly tattoos. Mike drew up the design and actually listened to my rather vague requests. I went in early January for my first appointment and he finished the outline like it was nothing. Granted, I have small arms, but this is the first shop where I've been able to sit as long as I did and I feel like I can attribute that to being comfortable. It's a very friendly and clean shop. Mike also did my Orioles tattoo, which is pretty much my favorite (until this huge piece is done, of course). It's not cheap, but good tattoos never are nor should they be. Charmed Life is by far one of my favorite finds in Baltimore. One of their artists there,Wolf, did a tattoo that was very sentimental to me and I can honestly say it's overall one of my favorite tattoos. By that I mean, not only is it an amazing piece of art, everything thing was. They have amazing artists at Charmed Life, Wolf did an amazing job. I didn't want it line for line and I asked if he could keep the key elements from the original but do his own style on it which is why I came to him in the first place originally. Shop was very clean, has a killer gallery up front, everyone was super friendly. Wolf made me feel very comfortable, we chatted basically the entire time and it was the nicest tattoo to deal with healing wise. My friends and I called ahead to see if they had any openings for us. We were getting a single word done, nothing complicated at all. They were very accommodating and told us they'd be happy to fit us in and were amazing through the whole process. We ended up keeping them open past 8 and they didn't say a word about it and were incredibly friendly. I wrote the word out and Joe did an awesome job replicating it 4 times on us. It was true to my handwriting, the line work was precise and clean and all 4 were identical. We were all very happy. He was quick, didn't go too deep or too shallow with the needle and his care instructions were clear and helpful. Joe is really funny, great people skills, fun to joke around with and overall made a slightly painful process a lot more bearable. My only complaint is the tape that they use to secure the wrap when the tattoo is done. Holy crap. Guys, please get something that doesn't feel like you're tearing flesh off when you're removing it. Taking it off was probably 100 times more painful than getting the tattoo. It's been two days and my tattoo is healing perfectly while my arm still stings and is inflamed from the tape. Tip: If you want to leave the tip on a credit card, please let them know how much before they process it, there's no tip option when its done. read more

I am so upset. I called Charmed Life last week to see if they had room for a walk in and they took me. I had two small tattoos done and they were done by Antonio, "Tony". He joked around with me before starting saying he just finished his apprenticeship.. with the work he did on me idk how he ever finished one!! I went to him with a small but simple picture of a scale and I had it done just under my elbow. The other tattoo was on the inside of my arm. He finished my scale in about 15-20 minutes and rushed it. A scale is supposed to represent balance and he couldn't even draw a straight line!! The scale wasn't even colored in correctly and you could see the stencil of where he was supposed to tattoo me! I left and had to turn around so he could fill in my tattoo more. I honestly was scared to have him touch me with a needle again bc I didn't want him to fuck it up any more. I've attached pictures to show what I wanted, right after he did it (before I turned around), and to now where it's almost healed. Now I'm going to have to spend more money on my simple piece and make it thicker than I wanted just so I can fix this. Very disappointed... read more

This is for professionalism courtesy to a non-customer in distress. My daughter got a huge tattoo this past weekend and I was calling different tattoo parlors for advice on how she could get it removed. Darl answered, responded with understanding for my concerns, not biased judgement for his field, and took down my information and said he'd call me if he could find out anything for me. Less than an hour later, he follows up with his promise and gives me contact information to help me in my search. I am not into tattoos, but if I were, I would def go to this place because that kind of caring and courtesy says a lot to me about the establishment. Other places I've called seemed either disinterested or annoyed that I called. I went here because of all the rave reviews and I was not disappointed! All the staff there are really friendly and helpful-and the artists are crazy talented. Darl did a coverup for me that is absolutely amazing. I went to him with my awful tattoo and told him I wanted it covered with a flower and he took it away. I came here based not only on the reviews but also on the tattoos I viewed on their website. My tattoo turned out awesome and I really love it, however, I couldn't give higher than a three because the customer service was just so terrible. I called ahead and asked to set up a consultation but they told me I had to do that online. So I filled out the form online and they told me I should just come in. I said that, based on what I saw online, I wanted to speak with Daryl or possibly Tony. They emailed me and said both would both be there on a specific day so I should go then. I did and when I got there it was really awkward. We walked into a room with t-shirts and artwork but no human beings. We didn't know if we should wait or keep walking. We called out a few times but no one came so finally we just walked in to the back room. There were a bunch of people sitting around and when I told them why I was there they said Daryl wasn't there (even though I was told he would be) but Tony was. I was already a little nervous before I got there, this would be my first tattoo and it was a memorial for my brother I had lost a month before, but our entrance had me even more on edge. When Tony noticed I was nervous his first words were "don't be so nervous just because you walk into a room full of black people". I was incredibly offended, and that should've been my clue to leave right then, but I really wanted this tattoo so I went on with my explanation. I showed him pictures of what I wanted and he took my deposit, told me to email him the pictures, and said me he would draw up four different options for me. Four. When I returned on the day for my actual tattoo days later Tony had only one sketch for me and it was nothing like what I asked for. It looked like he did a google search 30 seconds before I walked in and hadn't even looked at my email. I had a friend with me and we were trying to explain what I wanted and what I didn't like and he was unbelievably rude. He talked to me like I was a five year old idiot and basically told my friend it was none of her business and she should shut up. I wanted to leave but I'd been planning this for months and I really wanted it done that day. After a half an hour of awkward silence, my friend ended up finding an image I liked better than his sketch so she sent it to him, he made a few changes, and that ended up being my tattoo. Before we got started I had to sign a form with a lot of information. Part of it said that I had received an "aftercare sheet". I never received one and when I asked about it he just said "I'll just tell you what to do". His brilliant instructions at the end were to just "leave the bandage on for about an hour. Wash it with soap. Then put lotion on it, any unscented will do". This was my first tattoo but my friend who was with me had a few and as soon as we got in the car she said she was always given detailed information. I went online later and saw recommendations that I wash it several times a day for weeks. That I should be using a healing ointment not lotion (I tried lotion anyway since he insisted and thought my skin would actually burn off). It also said the bandage should be left on for several hours. A lot of the information was conflicting but, as I had next to none from him and following his advice burned my skin, I decided to go with my friend and the Internet over him. I think this place might be good for men who have lots of tattoos and are just adding to their collection. This place is not for a girl getting her first tattoo. The biggest disappointment of all is that for me this was my final closure after the death of my brother. While the tattoo, which I do love, will be with me forever so will that experience. I thought it would be a chance for me to feel connected to him but instead Tony left me feeling stupid and small. I will be getting another tattoo but I will never go back here. read more

The gallery in the front room rotates with an impressive review of local artists, and the spaces in the back are warm and friendly, with a creative abundance of artwork. The process of getting my piece done, from the initial consultations to the four sessions for which I've currently sat have been enjoyable and professional. Got my first tattoo here a few weeks ago. Of all things to get my heart set on for a first tattoo, I chose a repeating geometric bicep band. It was a very difficult layout, but Joe figured it out in the end and I have no regrets whatsoever. As a Register Nurse I was impressed with the how clean the shop was and the attention to sterile and clean technique. I had a concept of what I wanted to have done for my first tattoo. After a short consult with Darl my thoughts were turned into an amazing piece of art not just a tattoo. He was able to do this for the second piece also. The color schemes and placement of the work is truly more then I could have ever conceived. I have had profession tattoo artist ask where I got my work done and then they admit that they hope to be that good someday! There is a certain professionalism that one should expect from a business. Professionalism isn't something that is hard to do. When you set up an appointment with a company that only sees clients through appointments... You would expect to be seen at that time. I talked to the tattoo artist for about 6 min about what I wanted( which wasn't much. Just a birthdate in Roman numerals which takes at the most 10 min) and he said no problem. He said he was the only there, but as long as I am there at 4 he will have me in and out. I get there about 5 min early and I am greeted by no one. So I wait and the tattoo artist says hello and he will be just one minute. 10 min have already gone by but, I'm not making a big deal of it. He comes out a few minutes later with a client and goes outside to take a picture of her tattoo. Again I don't mind. So after he takes the the picture he goes in the back with the client for a few more minutes. At this point I am a little irritated. So they come out and he introduces himself to me. He then proceeds to tell me that he can't see me today, because he forgot he had another appointment. He then tells me he might be able to get me in next week. After informing him I don't live out here ( for the second time since we had a nice conversation on the phone about it) he then proceeds to point me to another tattoo shop up the street that is closed... as if he didn't hear a word I said about me not living out here. At this point I'm so irritated that I just leave. I thought because they had such a good rating on Yelp that this would be a great place to come, but I was wrong. I have never had a bad experience at a tattoo place before, but I think the part that bother me the most was the guy didn't even have the decency to apologize. As promised he got back to me and we set up my session. Darl took his time with me, making sure I was happy with the design and asked for my input making me extremely comfortable and like I was being listened too. I just got a small addition to a preexisting tattoo done by Jeff today and it was wonderful! He was super flexible-- texted me and I went in half an hour later to get it done. He took the time to make sure it was sized and placed right. He asked me if I was doing okay pretty regularly throughout the process, which was nice. I wish there was a way that I could rate Wolf and Charmed Life Studio as MORE than 5 stars because of my amazing experience. I was especially appreciative because I had a not so great consult at another tattoo studio in Maryland. I was feeling doubtful that I would find my dream artist to work with because the first person I saw (at the other place) made me feel like my ideas were "too much" and "not possible". Luckily before I gave up, I saw Wolf's art on the Charmed Life Website and thought he might be a great match. Sure enough, in less than 24 hours, he emailed me back with an excitedly detailed response inviting me to set up a consult with him. I was already pleased at that point without even meeting him, because the last place I went did not show NEARLY the same amount of enthusiasm. So then I have my consult with Wolf...and any frustration or doubt I had from my last experience was immediately alleviated. Wolf was everything I was hoping for from a Tattoo artist. That is WHY I wait to get tattoos, because its more than just ink on my skin for me....its about finding a person who creates art that matches my aesthetic and connects to art in a way that I relate to.
