My sister and I visited Chashni Cafe for Sunday brunch. You order at the counter and get a number to take to your table. I managed to snag the last table near the door, but while waiting, I noticed a spot further inside open up where the pastel décor could really be appreciated. I asked a staff member if I could move, and she explained that section is usually reserved for larger parties but offered to check with her manager. A few minutes later, she let us know we could switch to the frankly cuter, quieter area. The café has a cozy and welcoming vibe. I ordered an iced matcha strawberry latte, which good, though it could have used more strawberry. The huevos rancheros were hearty, flavorful, and spicy, which I didn't mind. My sister had a burger with cubed fries. She forgot to ask for the chipotle sauce on the side, so it was spicier than she expected, but she still enjoyed it. The cubed fries were a pleasant surprise, light and flavorful. She also ordered an iced blueberry coffee, which she liked. Overall, I'd recommend asking about spice levels when ordering. The place is so cute and nicely decorated, plus a lot more spacious than it looks like from the outside! The girl that helped me was really sweet, but I do have to point out that it takes them a while for the drinks and food to come out - our fries came out 10 minutes after our burgers and the drinks took 15 minutes to come out. I got the spicy burger and it was okay, a bit below average even, but what I really liked was their sauce, I dipped the fries in them and it was sooo good. The fries were a nice surprise as they come in cubes (like home fries) which I wasn't expecting, but I really enjoyed them! I also got their green iced tea which was good and minty. This place is so cute!!! I really love the drink that I got which is a summer seasonal drink. Essentially it had mint, sparkling water and matcha in it. This was so refreshing! I downed it so fast. My favorite part of the drink was that they used definitely ceremonial matcha. Since the matcha was rich and did not taste earthy. The masala home fries was actually a side! So I feel like I got a decent amount for it being only a side. I liked how crunchy it was and it wasn't that spicy. I just started sweating after the fifth bite because I'm sensitive to spice it was still tolerable. The blueberry donut was super fresh! I also did not feel disgusting after eating which I normally do after donuts. I think because it's home made and fresh it was super satisfying since it wasn't sweet at all. A much needed addition to the Montclair breakfast scene. We came here for breakfast and I was really impressed by the creativity of the menu. They offer traditional American breakfast dishes and drinks with a Pakistani twist. I got the Desi Omelet Parantha, a honey cardamom latte, and the Pakistani Chai. The honey cardamom latte was a standout, and is definitely my new favorite cup of coffee in Montclair. The omelet was very fresh and flavorful and came with dahl, parantha and spicy pickles on the side. Overall this is much needed break from the repetitive Montclair breakfast lineup. The service here was also excellent and fast. The gentleman behind the counter was the one who convinced me to get the honey cardamom latte, and as I mentioned above, I was not disappointed. He even made a seahorse latte art. The inside of Chashni is also very cute, and reminds me of a trendy (but still relaxed) NYC cafe. I definitely want to come back and bring some friends! read more

Absolutely loved this place! The girl at the counter was super sweet when I placed my order. I ordered the desi breakfast bowl, which was delicious. Something was spicy in the dish,I want to assume the masala potatoes? But not overly spicy, just enough. I also ordered the oatmilk chai, which was so comforting on the cold and rainy day. I wish it was refillable haha I wanted to order the gulabi waffle but it was just me eating so I didn't want to over order. However the family next to me got 2 waffles and with no shame I asked if I could take a picture haha not only did they say yes, but turned out the kitchen had accidently have them the extra one and they gave it to me! Another great addition to the Montclair food scene! This is a very inviting cafe on Bloomfield Ave. The decor is bright yet soothing with white and soft pink decor. The cafe is counter service, and if you order to stay, your food and beverage will be brought to your table. All of the staff were very pleasant and friendly. I ordered the Date Salad with Avocado and Grilled Chicken. This was a beautiful dish, packed with a variety of fresh ingredients. I polished it off happily. I also had a Chai Tea that was probably the best that I've ever had. Lastly, I had a Gulab Jamun Cake which was cardamom heavy in the best way. The reservation before us ran very late (they came 45 min late) and instead of turning them away, they made it our problem ! And when we said this was not acceptable they said all they'd give is 10% off but we'd have to wait over an hour for a table. No apology or anything. I had brunch at Chashni Café in Montclair with my girl, and I'll be real, this spot surprised me in the best way. It's creative without trying too hard, and everything we ordered actually hit. We started with these drinks: She had the Strawberry Matcha ($7.75) -- smooth, not too sweet, and blended clean. You could taste both the matcha and strawberry without either one overpowering the other. I got the Honey Cardamom Latte ($6.50), iced with oat milk. It was everything I didn't know I needed -- subtle spice, smooth, refreshing. One of those "glad I ordered this" moments. I ordered the Breakfast Burrito ($12) and added beef bacon -- and that instantly took it up a notch. The bacon had the right crisp and flavor without being tough. Add in the ranchero-style home fries, black beans, scrambled eggs, cotija, avocado, and that chipotle aioli... every bite was locked in. That aioli brought everything together. She had the Desi Breakfast Bowl ($13), which had a real depth of flavor -- masala home fries, eggs, mint chutney, pickled onions. It was bold, fresh, and flavorful without being heavy. We wrapped it up with the Gulabi Waffle ($14), and I'm not gonna lie -- that thing knocked me out. The waffle was warm and soft with gulab jamun vibes, and the kulfi ice cream on top was literally the icing on the waffle. Sweet, creamy, a little floral -- but balanced. This place is extremely unfriendly toward dog owners. It's not just that dogs aren't allowed (which is their policy, and that's fine)--it's how they communicate it: with an attitude that treats pets as if they're dangerous or disgusting. There was no basic courtesy or kindness--just condescension. We ordered two items here--one cake and one drink. Although the store wasn't busy at all, the drink took an unusually long time to make, during which we got tiered standing so sit near the entrance. Just as we finally got both items and were about to leave, a female staff member suddenly poked her head out and snapped at us with shocking rudeness, saying "dogs are not allowed"--as if we had committed a crime. Our small dog was just calmly standing near the entrance the whole time. Her tone and attitude were incredibly unpleasant--eye-rolling, condescending, and completely lacking even basic courtesy. This place treats dogs like a threat and customers with total disregard. To all animal lovers: Absolutely would NOT recommend. My boyfriend's drink (rooh afza iced matcha) came out nearly immediately but then we proceeded to watch multiple tables receive their drinks that ordered after us while I waited almost 20 minutes to receive my iced matcha latte. I was then advised they had run out of cold foam and caramel syrup (which is an extra cost that I had paid for) and no apology for the delay or offer to reconcile. We came here for a quick bite before our trip to the city, the interior is small but well curated for a calm catch up setting. The ambiance is modern cafe with its pink walls and booth seats. I suggest some paintings or tapestries to make it feel more like the "cultural cafe" in its tagline. I went late morning on a Friday, the restaurant was about 30% full with 1 person behind the counter so it took a few minutes to be served. Unfortunately, they were out of the namesake chai, which was the reason I went. I was able to get an oat milk chai instead and it was good. I'm not an oat milk fan so I added some vital proteins to thicken it up and I could really taste the cardamom and spices, which was what I came for! If you have only had Starbucks Chai, please try REAL chai... you will notice the difference! One suggestion to the Chatni team: move the milk/ sugar station to eye level. I wanted to add some sugar to the chai and could not find it. Another woman had the same problem and asked and it was on a pillar above eye level for the average woman! I also ordered the mint and Tamarind smash burger and the masala fries. Both were very flavorful and well spiced. I tend to want a bit more heat, but that's because I'm Indian and used to it! When I arrived the tables hadn't been bussed, so I moved some plates and got a table towards the back. I must have arrived when staff was on a break, as more help arrived after I sat down and things were quickly cleared. Overall, I recommend stopping in to Chashni Chai. If you are in Montclair and want to decompress a little with a nice, flavorful cup of real chai and some tasty food, stop in. They recently opened in Montclair and will likely iron out the minor inconveniences mentioned above in coming weeks. I will be back next time I'm in town to try the namesake chai and some desserts! read more

I came in for lunch on a cold day and enjoyed the "cozy salad" which consists of so many different components that are all full of warming spices and great Indian flavors. I will start with the positives: great food, pleasant atmosphere. I visited today (Sunday) and all the empty tables, except for one had a reserved card on them. My partner and I arrived before the rush started. My partner's dish (waffles) came out about 20min after mine, after we asked about it and were told the order ticket didn't print. We also ordered an affogato and the espresso had a significant burnt taste. I love espresso and can take bitter but this was beyond that. We asked for a refund and one of the staff on the floor said she would issue it. We then had to ask numerous times for the refund, to the point of going back to the register area where the young woman taking orders asked the other customers in line if it was ok she take a moment to issue us the refund! She issued less than the amount paid. Then we asked for the manager's business card and the person working the espresso machine told me they didn't have a business card but that he was the manager on duty. I asked him how to get in contact with the manger and he directed me to the cafe's website. He never asked if he could help with anything or resolve the issue. Also to note, many people seeking to sit were turned away because the tables were reserved. As a small cafe with order at the register and no servers, you should not be accepting reservations, especially on his traffic days, such as a Sunday. There were limited staff working for Sunday brunch. Hopefully they resolve these issues quickly. read more

I've been wanting to go to their original location in Chatham for so long and was so excited to see that they opened a second location right in the heart of Montclair. The vibe of this location is really cute and clean, with elements of pinks and neutral tones. Great for a quick stop or to stay and work (which is what one of the customers was doing there with her laptop and notebook). The hot chai is one of the most fragrant ones I've tried, and it was literally a magical experience to sip on as I watched the snow come down outside. The gulabi waffle with kulfi ice cream exceeded the hype - it was so light and fluffy with the perfect aroma of rose. So heavenly! The mint tamarind smash burger and masala home fries had a fresh take of Paki fusion. They also have a cute back wall of merch(andise) that include candles for disaster relief, tote bags and sweatshirts, hot sauces, and more. We've been to the location in Chatham and were huge fans of everything we ate there so we were so excited to learn that a new location was opening closer to us in Montclair! Honestly everything is so good from the toasts to the waffles to the burgers that you can't go wrong, and we love the chai so much that we'll get a pot to share. I ordered an iced masala chai latte with simple syrup and whole milk. I couldn't taste the Chai flavour which was really disappointing because I was really craving the Chai flavour. And then I couldn't taste sweetness either, even though I asked for simple syrup. I could mainly just taste milk with a hint of masala flavour. And there was so much ice to the point where I felt like my cup was mostly just filled with ice. And then I ordered the desi breakfast bowl with bacon bits. The bowl was pretty good. The flavours were good. I liked the mint chutney. I liked the flavour on the home fries; although, they were a little soggy. I did think the bowl was overpriced for what I did get. I felt like I didn't get enough food for what I paid. Presentation of the food was very nice. The two of us sat on the corner table which was furthest inside because it was the only available one. The privacy was nice but being situated in a spot where people were constantly passing by to go into and exit the bathroom threw off the experience a tiny bit.
