One word... WOW. The Corner in Upper Montclair has that rare mom-and-pop feel that immediately makes you feel welcome. It's cozy, genuine, and the kind of place where you can tell there's a lot of love going into what comes out of the kitchen. And speaking of that kitchen--you can see it from pretty much every seat in the house. Watching several cooks navigate what looks like an incredibly tiny space is almost mesmerizing. Somehow, they move around each other seamlessly, and the best part? The food comes out FAST. My wife went with the hummus, and it was creamy, flavorful, and delicious. But the surprise star on the side was the salted dried kale chip--such a simple little addition, but ridiculously good. Then came my pancakes. Out of this world. Small in diameter, but super thick, with a beautifully crispy exterior giving way to an interior that was fluffy, light, and airy. I've tried making this style of pancake at home countless times, and I still have absolutely no idea how to get that texture. The syrup and berries were the perfect finishing touches. Everything just worked. I've made and had soooo many pancakes in my life, and this is easily top 3 best. I ordered my omelette to go, so I didn't get the full sit-down experience and I'm keeping that in mind with my review. I customized it with cheddar cheese, bacon, and onion. Unfortunately, something about it didn't sit right with my stomach, and the cheese tasted a little off to me. I also ordered a chai latte, but it was pretty plain. It mostly tasted like tea and milk rather than the spiced, flavorful chai I was expecting. The racist owner, Jeff Munoz, grabbed me at the door because (in the middle of pouring weather), my umbrella had the audacity to be dripping. I'm literally running in to grab a drink that I called in, and to head out to my toddler's gym class. When I told him "hey, I'll be quick, I'm just running in to grab a drink" and I'm legit in a hurry because my car is idling outside, he raises his voice and yells at me and THEN instructs his staff not to serve me. Disrespectful. And I won't be back. I'll also make sure that Montclair's council hears about my experience, and everybody in nearby towns. It's not my first time hearing of their trash treatment of Black & Brown people, but I now know what those who have reported before me, experienced. The place is small, but cozy. Our server was nice, informative, and attentive. The beverages were delicious and meals were flavorful. It was priced and portioned well. Stopped in for lunch on a Friday while in town and loved my experience. Had a short fifteen minute wait and was seated at the bar near the window. The service was super attentive + the ambience felt like a true neighborhood spot with a cozy and hip interior. Started off with a DKA pastry and then followed up with one of their specials which was their take on a chicken Milanese paired with a buttermilk ranch topped salad. Love this place for brunch and a coffee. There's usually a wait but if you're flexible about seating it moves pretty fast, they have tables, counter and outdoor seating. They usually run some different specials for both food and drinks. They also have a really good juice list in addition to all the breakfast and lunch foods. Was in Montclair and it was time for a late lunch so I decided to finally stop in to The Corner. Whenever I've driven by in the morning there's always a line outside as they're supposed to have great coffee and breakfast, however, it was almost 2pm so there was no line and it was time for lunch ... but I still had this awkward wait time just sort of standing there waiting for someone to greet and seat me. Once I was seated I was given a carafe of water with a filled glass (& the gentleman continued to ensure my glass was never empty which was a nice touch). The menu itself is pretty breakfast heavy but they have daily specials which seem to capture mostly non-breakfast items and I decided to try the Roadside Burger & Fries ... but I literally sat there waiting once again to be acknowledged by a server and place my order (& it was a good 5 minutes). Once my order was placed the meal arrived pretty swiftly. The burger was decent but nothing to write home about and the fries were literally potato sticks because they were so thinly sliced ... if they had been advertised as such I would've opted for a different side if possible. Overall it was a true mid experience ... but I will say the buzz in the restaurant is pretty nice as they had the door open, outdoor seating and it was a beautiful day. read more

I was most impressed by the pancakes which are, in fact, as thick as they appear but also maintain the crisp edges that I absolutely love. I asked for extra crispy bacon and they delivered. I also had a chai latte although my colleague ordered the seasonal cider and I kind of wished I had tried that. This spot is cozy and even has a number of fresh juices you can order. And the display was full of pastries that looked yummy but I just had to resist. My sole qualm with this place was that I was told I would have to wait to be seated until my full party of two arrived. I had been standing and was wearing my work bag. I get it, but lord let me sit down. Not much will change between a party of 1 vs 2 and also the other options (bar seating) wouldn't have been very comfortable for me anyway. When I look up hugely popular, busy restaurants that do not take reservations like The Corner on Yelp, the thing of utmost importance to me is my expected wait time. So: The wait for 5 people on a cloudy, brisk fall Sunday at noon - 1 hour. The wait for 2 people on a freezing winter Tuesday at 11:45 AM - No wait for the counter, 5-10 minutes for a table. By the time we left around 12:45 PM, there were free tables. The menu is overall very simple, but the preparations are very well done. I ordered the brisket taco which I felt was the wrong thing to order. It tasted good but very standard. Seriously, I should have gotten the salmon toast, the breakfast sandwich, or those huge fluffy pancakes. My wife ordered the Corner burger with shoestring fries - that was juicy and delicious. I added on a Kouign-amann pastry to our order at the end which was delicious and just the right level of sweetness, and partially made up for it. We will probably be back on another cold Tuesday at 12:30 so I can order those pancakes. read more
