Nice small dishes like the shredded potato and grilled sausage. For the amount of food you get, the prices are pretty inexpensive, so you definitely feel like you are getting good value. Back in late July, I was fortunate to have won a gift card to dine at Chat Bar's Scarborough location. There were restrictions on this gift card: - I had to specify a date between July 22 and August 5 (Civic Holiday) - I could only specify dropping by its Spadina or Scarborough location - Once this gift card was configured for the date that I wanted, I couldn't change it. I needed help. I asked two friends to join me. Sadly, one couldn't make it. Despite missing that person, we had a great time enjoying dinner here on a Wednesday night. One friend is a colleague. The other one was our intern. She has since completed her work term and we all ended up being friends. We left work at around 4 pm. Highway 401 was busy, but it was surprisingly not as horrible as it could have been. This Chat Bar location is roughly a five-minute drive from my home. My friend also lives in Markham. It was nice to drive northwest to drop her home after we had stuffed ourselves silly with yummy food. There was lots of parking in this plaza. It was fairly busy at around 5:30 pm. I backed into a spot and walked in. We were greeted by two women. I indicated that I had a gift card. I had to show it to them on my phone. They nodded and got us a cozy table to sit down. We liked the large chalkboard with art. This lighting provided a warm, cozy ambiance. It was nice hanging out with good company. We got water to start. Ordering consisted of scanning a QR code and ordering online. You don't pay online. Our rather long list of items consisted of these items: - Black pepper kalbi beef - Grilled sausage - Pork belly - Mini cuttlefish balls - Honey wings with garlic - Enoki mushrooms - House special potato slices - Grilled pineapple - Lychee nigori We originally wanted to try the Japanese peach sparking wine. Sadly, the LCBO strike had just been lifted, but this eatery didn't have a chance to replenish its stock. Instead, we got the lychee nigori. It worked out, as its price managed to get us over my gift card's value. Staff were extremely attentive and helpful throughout our stay. They deserve top marks for making our experience memorable and great. The table had warming tray for the skewers. There were two tea light candles that kept everything warm. We loved everything that we had consumed. Some highlights: - The proteins on skewers were so tender and flavourful. We both felt that the black pepper kalbi beef and pork belly were exceptional out of the batch. - The enoki mushrooms were delicious. They came in an aluminum foil packet. Anything in aluminum foil had lots of chopped garlic. Specifically, the house special potato slices were divine. They were so garlicky. Love! - Get the wings. The honey wings with garlic were done well. We enjoyed them immensely. - The grilled pineapple felt like dessert. If you love fruit that gets even sweeter grilled, get these skewers. If you feel like splurging on booze, I highly recommend the lychee nigori. It was fantastic. It was saki with the perfect lychee flavour in each sip. The bottle looks large, but it's not. We had no problem downing it. We polished everything off, except for the sliced potatoes. I asked my friend if she wanted them to take home. She let me take them instead. I got them boxed up and they were even better the following day! My friend felt the need to grab the remaining $10 that we owned. She paid with a debit card through her phone. Done! We got white rabbit candy before we left. I hadn't had some in years. It was a nice touch. I highly recommend dropping by. We had fun and waddled out just fine afterwards. I've walked by several Chat Bars but you can't really tell what they're hiding on the inside. All of them have a darker interior. This one, you walk in to a wall of wood medallions scrawled with doodles and signatures. The seating is a little eclectic with booths that have stools and high tops. There was a huge chalkboard wall on one side that had different hand drawn characters on it including Snorlax and Rick and Morty. The menu is more than just skewers but that's primarily what we came for. The table was already set with a warming tray for the skewers and was kept warm by two tea light candles underneath it. There are a lot of skewers that feature more niche ingredients like innards which we mainly steered clear of. The regular meats were really good! The wings were super juicy. The Chinese buns don't have anything inside of the but are very similar in texture to the white steamed buns (on the inside anyways). Most of the skewers are seasoned the same way so if you love it, you'll pretty much like everything here. It's a little spicy but it's the kind of spice that builds up in your mouth. Each order came in 4 skewers, while the mini sizing ones (yes, they have a few of that) came in 10 skewers. They were all fully cooked before bringing it out to you and placed on the stone plate that was meant to keep the food warm (not that it's really doing its job as I can touch the plate easily). All skewers were seasoned really well, with the perfect kick in spice. Another good point about Chat Bar is that it is opened until pretty late, so you can go there when everywhere else is already closed. The only parts that I don't like about Chat Bar are that it only accepts cash. And you have to pay for water. We came to have a gathering with some former colleagues. First of all, the decor was very different from regular Chinese regular. It feels more like a lounge than restaurant. There was a huge dragon drew on the big wall on the right hand side. Menu was really simple with a variety of BBQ chicken parts, lamb, pork, pork legs, white Chinese buns, spicy hot pot, seafood, etc. The seasoning was a little spicy and sweet. There was even a slate plate heated with candles to keep the food warm. The food here was amazing. The staffs were also friendly and patient. She kept asking for seasoning preferences and if everything was up to our satisfaction. I had a good time eating here. It is one of those places where you can have nice conservation with a normal background noise level. It was kind of on the pricey end if you want to be full. First time coming here. It is located on the southeast corner of Silver Star Blvd and Steeles Ave. The place isn't big, in comparison to other skewer joints. Their target customers are teens to adults, and not family with young kids or babies. Due to limited space, there is really no room to park a stroller and they don't have high chairs. Since their table arrangements are booth style, bar seat style with no backs, and picnic style tables. I would avoid bringing young kids since there is open flame readily available, which isn't safe for kids. I don't recommend large groups of 8 or more since the picnic tables hold less than that and it will be tight. Atmosphere 3.5/5 The place is dim, which can be romantic. There is a TV. It is interesting that the kitchen is at the front of the place, when you walk in and see what they are doing, where most kitchens are at the back of the place. One side of the dining area is all booths, the center area is all bar tables, and the other side are all picnic tables. Service 3.5/5 Friendly service and quick as well. Food 4/5 A lot of these skewer places are oily, but this place isn't. So the taste is a lot cleaner, which I really like. We ordered the following skewers: - chicken skin - omasum with spicy oil - beef - chicken - chicken joint - mushroom - cabbage - potato with tin foil We enjoyed all of them. The potato dish was garlicky which I really like and seasoned well. Overall definitely we will go back. As for food versus value, it is slightly more expensive than the other places. The skewers here are always so flavorful and juicy, and I love the cute little hot plates to keep them warm (not sure how effective it is but at least it looks nice!). The grilled scallops are a staple in our order along with some beef, lamb, and pork skewers. I've wanted to try chat bar for a long time and I finally got to go a few weeks ago! I ordered short ribs, chicken skewers, eggplant, cheese corn and oysters. The meat (ribs and chicken) were delicious and paired really nicely with the spicy seasoning on the side. The short ribs were a bit difficult to eat off the skewer though so I ended up needing to use my hands. The eggplant was good, but really big so make sure everyone is willing to share if you go for it. The cheese corn was really rich, and had a strong cheddar taste. Surprisingly it tasted really good sprinkled on top of the chicken skewers, but it was too rich to eat on its own. My only big complaint about this place is that there's a very limited drink selection (only beer?). Since this place is called chat BAR, I at least expected some soju or cocktails but the menu only seemed to have beer. I heard the pork at chatbar is supposed to be good, but I didn't get the chance to try it this time so I'll definitely need to try it next time. They also give white rabbit candy at the end of the meal which was a nice bonus. I will definitely be coming again in the future :) read more

I would love more variety... maybe a good dipping sauce to go along? The lamb and beef tasted exactly the same... just that the lamb was more tender. I'd come back just for the lamb skewers. Garfish was crispy, the meat was soft and tender... but I have had better ones at Oriental Gourmet. We did wait close to an hour from our first lamb skewers to the remaining orders. Now I understand why it is called Chat Bar. JW and I literally chatted for 45 mins to an hour before the food came lol. We almost refused to pay tips for the minimal service. The waitstaff were courteous and friendly... but we had to fetch our own drinks from the beer/pop fridge in the front counter and open it ourselves. They charge you after you consume. Bottled water is complimentary. It is a nice feature where it makes you feel like home... I might as well just fetch my food too? Unfortunately this place does not take any reservations. so its better to limit your part to probably 6 people or so. to make life easier. The food specialty is that it is a coal grill. so it goes back to the days when you have coal bbq and have that coal flavour in the food. This place is definitely pretty good. We had quite a bit of food, such as lamb skewers, oysters, beef skewers, as well as clam and lots of variety of veggies. the money wise it does add up. which is why it is better spent in this restaurant with more people.
