Let me start by saying: don't judge a book by it's cover. That kind of fits here. The outsidesnot much to look at but boy oh boy does that change once inside. We were warmly greeted by the owner Jim. We sat at the bar and started our tasting. Jim was so knowledgeable, fun, and obviously excited to share his wines with us. That experience alone was worth the visit but the wines themselves were all excellent! They specialize in dry wines which is unusual for the Niagara region. I'm sure this winery is lovely from the inside and the owners do a great job hosting and selling wine. I will definitely try them end of the season into the fall. I drove up to this winery and it did not appear to have much seating outdoors, if at all. I really wanted to sit outside and enjoy the warm sunny day with my wine tasting. So I decided to skip this winery and move on down the Niagara Wine Trail. Next time! read more

The owner did a wine sampling with us. He was engaging, entertaining, and educated us on several aspects of wines in the region. He offers plenty of wines to sample. I don't tend to review or recommend wines because taste preferences are very personal and many factors affect tastings. At least one wine is made in the Hungarian style. The owner will gladly describe it for you. There's a dog on the premises, friendly and loves visitors. It's a quaint venue just 2 miles from Lake Ontario. This was such a great find! My husband and I enjoy visiting wineries and haven't been on the Niagara Wine Trail for several years. We stopped at 4 wineries, and this was by far the most educational and entertaining of the 4 stops. Jim spent a lot of time explaining the wines and the processes used for developing them. We had a hard time deciding which bottles to buy...so we bought a bunch! Love their dog! He was so friendly and gentle. Wow!! If you really enjoy wine and particularly enjoy varieties and flavors you can't find anywhere else locally, you absolutely need to do a tasting at Chateau Niagara! From Georgian Saperavi, to a Riesling that tastes "creamy", to a very well balanced Cabernet franc, to their Kagor dessert wine which if you let it savor on your tongue will take you on a WILD ride of flavor, you ABSOLUTELY need to stop by! We stopped by yesterday and had an educational and entertaining wine tasting experience with the owner, Jim. Just such a pleasure to listen to and share stories with. Jim and I both share a love for Georgia (the country), and its not every day I find someone else locally who does too. We also really appreciated that he took the time to help us better understand the wines we were drinking, and enjoyed the fun tasting activities he had us try. This was the third time I had visited the winery, but absolutely the best visit. It really makes a difference to come during the week when it's quieter so you can get a very personal tasting experience. I also suggest you check out their wine club, it's a great deal if you plan to buy a few bottles a year. This winery is a must on the Niagara (USA) wine trail! read more

The service was amazing! The owners (husband and wife) were extremely kind. She made the cheese and cracker plate. He walked us through each of the wines we'd be tasting. Another great tasting experience. I'm only recently getting into dryer reds and I liked all we tried today. Can't say enough about how great it is to see a local winery growing the Georgian grape saperavi. We signed up for the club on our last visit, it's free and I recommend it, so on this visit we bought some club exclusive releases and got a cork screw. We've been using this style screw for a while but had cheap ones, this one is solid and tight definitely well made. read more

Chateau Niagara consistently has excellent service, even during busy events. You'll learn about how the wines are made and receive tips on food pairings. They grow their own grapes, and releases change over the years, but they do have some constants like their dessert wines. Neither the A La Mode nor the Kagor are overwhelmingly sweet, and the Kagor has an almost smokey quality that makes me long for s'mores. Sometimes they have "orange" wines, which are made from white grapes in the skin and processed more like red wines. Yesterday I was able to try a batch in progress that was a blend of Riesling and Chardonnay. While they don't produce my favorite wines (not a comment on the quality of their wines, just my own distinct preferences) I know I will always have a great tasting experience here. read more

My Hubster and I enjoy wine and love visiting wineries where we find gems of wine. We visited this winery based on a recommendation of a friend and we were not disappointed. The owner/winemaker sat with us and explained each wine we tasted. We were most impressed with the wines he creates. This was our first stop on our wine and cheese tour of 10 tastings in 2 days. We could have stayed here for all of the tastings. We received our glasses here to start along with our stamp card. These glasses were very unique smaller than normal but perfect for a tasting. This wasn't a fancy place like some that we seen this weekend, but the owners are truly a wine scientist. The passion and love they out into their wines makes this time spent with them worth it. What i will tell you that each wine we tasted the owner gave us an explanation on what each fruit was included and why. Some he received consultation from people from out of the country to make sure their wines are perfection. He also taught us how to taste the wines along with what to look for including what foods to pair the wines with. Chateau Niagara isn't as fancy as some of the others on the Niagara Wine Trail, but what they do have is amazing wines and an owner with an immense passion for is products. Jim Baker is the owner and his presentation and discussion about their wines alone is worth the trip. My wife and I stopped in a few weeks ago and were totally enthralled and entertained by Jim's presentation. We found his wines to be exceptional and superior to wines I've paid 2 and 3 times the money for. We found his presentation to be educational and entertaining (humorous too). If you like their wine Chateau Niagara has an offer that you shouldn't pass up. Their wine club is free to join and provides free tastings and a discount on bottle purchases. You are just expected to buy 12 bottles throughout the year. We enjoyed their wines and Jim's presentation so much that this past weekend we took good friends back with us. They too loved the wines and presentation and joined the wine club. We are looking forward to returning and sharing the wines we've purchased with family and friends. I love the Niagara Wine Trail but this winery was not that impressive. All the wines were dry, which they advertised but they didn't taste good for being dry wines. The facility was large but the tasting bar was very tiny. It seemed lost in the room. Staff was friendly but didn't describe the wines much to us during our tasting. Just poured and let us talked. Their reds are exceptional here, which I think is a bit hard to come by on Niagara Wine Trail. They have a great option for a membership too! These are the best dry wines I've ever had. The owner is very knowledgeable and will tell you the best way to drink each wine and what foods to pair it with. While visiting our daughter at UB we decided to take an afternoon and drive up through wine country. We stopped at many nice vineyards before finding Chateau Niagara. "Hands down" our favorite!!! Cathy and Jim do a wonderful job as hosts and winemakers. They have a great variety wines and take pride and joy in explaining each one. Jim loves to give a good story as well. Tucked away on the escarpment this winery is a quaint little family run place. Wonderful and exciting wines like the Russian Kagor ( the only place you can get one nearby really). It's easy to see the passion this family has for their product. read more

Hey people, this is probably the best kept secret on the Niagara wine trail. Most of the wineries tend to have sweeter wines, which is fine if you like sweet wines BUT not this place. There is not a bad wine at Chateau Niagara. My wife if a white wine drinker and loves their Guiwertrameiner (I'm sure I butchered that spelling), but she's not necessarily a riesling fan . . . Yet she bought a bottle of this wine we call deliciousness! I, myself, LOVE their reds . . . especially the penot noir (which I usually find lacking in flavor elsewhere) and the bulls blood!
