We stopped here after a trip to Mesa Verde. I had a barbacoa chimichanga. The chimi itself was pretty good; the meat was tasty and the cheese and meat inside were good. I which it had some vegetables and salsa to break up the flavors. The beans were good, but the rice wasn't fully cooked. My family said similar things about their dishes; overall they were fine. Holy guacamole! We ordered a side of guacamole, and is the size of a small car (see photo). It was pretty good, though. The other good thing was the shrimp, ceviche/tostada, though there was not a lot of actual shrimp in it. Overall, the flavor was OK, but for example, I ordered the Colorado burro, and I asked for them to add cheese and sour cream, and they put it on the side instead of in the burro. Also, there just wasn't a lot of meat in it. My boyfriend got the chicken fajitas, and again, not a lot of meat. This place is fine. I live in Arizona, so I have tons of options for amazing Mexican food. Maybe it is relative, and maybe it is good for around here. However, we felt that it was just okay. read more

Camarones a la Crema: Wish I could give this dish seven stars it was so delightful. The shrimp were actually NOT overcooked and they were large and high quality - which is not very usual in a small town Mexican joint. Although I wouldn't really call this an "authentic" dish compared to the others, my white girl tongue likes spice but it also like fatty cream and this just really hit the spot. Honestly I would drive the 15 hours back there from LA to try this again... or at least next time I'm in the area I will go back for this dish in particular. 5/5 Camarones Diabla: Also a delightfulllll dish! Although we ordered it spicy they may not have believed that so pale a table could actually want it spicy - bc it had absolutely no kick to it. However, it was savory and intense tomato flavor that went very well with the superbly prepared shrimp. Comes with tasty refried beans and mexican rice that was also good - sticks to your bones after a long day of hiking. 5/5 Huevos Rancheros: These were actually picante but interestingly the overall was disappointing. The sauce had a lot of heat but not a lot of flavor - I ended up stealing my mom's Diabla sauce to go on it to add a little something something. I definitely would pass on this one. 2/5 Enchiladas: Left a lot to be desired. The driest enchiladas I have ever had in my entire life - the sauce was completely soaked into the tortilla and I had to request extra table salsa so I could make this palatable. Wish I hadn't ordered this a la carte - I had plenty of food otherwise. 2/5 Fresh warm chips with house made salsa at the table to start - complimentary and I gobbled it down. Even asked for the to-go Salsa that is $5. Be warned it comes in a 16 ounce coca-cola soft drink paper cup - so it doesn't travel well in a cooler when you're camping. This container spilled immediately so it was a waste of 5 bucks - had I known the container I would NOT have ordered. But as for flavor of salsa and chip: 5/5 We came in from our campground craving a margarita and their liquor license was pending until mid October. SADNESS. We were devastated bc the margaritas looked thirst and body ache-quenching. The service was also really nice and friendly - however, it was a LONG wait for the food. Literally came out 50 minutes after we ordered - which I generally don't mind if I have a drink, but with just water and chips I felt every minute of it. These two negatives almost had me knock it down to 3 instead of 4 star experience - pero todavia estoy sonando con esos camarones... asi que I think this restaurant merits the 4 stars it has received. While staying in Mancos, CO we needed our oil changed in our GMC truck and while we waited decided we needed a nice refreshing margarita at the Mexican restaurant next door. Never have eaten there but knew they must have margaritas. The food was pretty tasty, not loaded down with sauce or cheese on the chicken enchilada which was fine by me. The meat maybe could have been a little more juicy, but hey just add their very yummy salsa that comes with the corn chips. Our chicken taco came with two corn tortillas and not fried which again I thoroughly enjoyed. I tasted the rice as my husband added a bit to my taco and it was good. My husband ate the most along with the refried beans and said they were good. Our margaritas were brought in these very large heavy glasses and were super good, mine being blended and my husbands on the rocks. It was happy hour so they only cost $6 which for the size is GREAT!! Unfortunately there was only one server,Beto and quite a few customers. He worked and hard and as fast as he could. We weren't in any hurry as we are on vacay. It was nice to just sit, relax and be patient for our service and food. Beto was kind and appreciated our patience. So much he gave us comp watermelon shots which were very tasty. If you are in Mancos or driving by, Chavolos is a must try! read more

We had a long day taking down, driving from Durango, setting the trailer up, driving through Mesa Verde National Park, going through museums, gift shops and taking a strenuous tour (their words)...so sustenance and a big honkin' margarita was in order! I found Chavalo's on Yelp and the reviews looked very good! We followed the GPS and wound our way through a parking lot to right in front. We were greeted and picked a table by the window. We were given menus, ordered drinks and they brought warm chips and spicy salsa. The chips were delicious and the salsa had a nice kick. There was a salsa bar so I was able to get a couple salsas for my mild salsa loving guy. The fire roasted salsa was delicious and I was able to get a few limes. The margaritas were in the giant thick walled glasses that made me look like I had too much to drink when I picked it up with both hands. They definitely put plenty of tequila in them and the flavor was perfect, according to my spouse. I added a bit of lime and water to lighten mine up. The entrees came in all their hot and melty cheese glory. I had a shredded beef taco and a Chile Relleno. The taco was good but the Chile Relleno was delicious. The chili was cooked to soft and the sauce tasty. Hubs had two enchiladas-one with al pastor and one with shredded beef. He loved both of them. The al pastor had chunks of pork and pineapple in a tasty red sauce. I definitely would go back and do recommend Chavalo's. Our server was nice and had a great attitude, though he didn't come back and check on us after our food was delivered. Maybe the snarfing sounds told him we were ok. read more

There are very few options for dining in Mancos, and this seems like one of the more popular ones. Enchiladas and tostadas were very good, as was the free chips and salsa (salsa has a nice little spicy kick to it). There is also a salsa bar, which was a nice surprise. I did not enjoy the rice and beans (something I rarely say at a Mexican restaurant). Service was very friendly and food was prompt. The interior space was lacking. Price was reasonable. Overall, if you're in Mancos and need to eat a quick and convenient bite, would recommend. However, if you've got the time/energy to drive a little farther, would consider the 30 min drive to Durango. read more

Service was excellent. Very friendly and efficient waitress. Having eaten at Chavolos on Bayfield 2 times, we felt the food here was not nearly as good. Flavors not the same. Table next to us had a similar experience and complained to waitress about the food. Ate outside because floor cleaning inside had left a strong Lysol smell. Where do I start... lady gave us menus then brought us waters and a sprite, asked if we were ready to order i said we needed another minute. We decided on what we wanted and it took me asking some guy to let her know we were ready. She came over and said she forgot about us. Went in around 6:30pm on a Sunday night for takeout. They were closing early because they ran out of ice (I heard the whole county was running low). They prepped our meal in about 20 minutes, which matched their estimate. Their tamales are amazing. You know how tamales can sometimes be kind of dry? No problems with that here! Fantastic texture and flavor, I could have eaten 20 of them. 5/5 stars. Their enchiladas el pastor were 4/5: great flavor, a little lacking in sauce for me. Good rice and beans, pretty standard. The Barbacoa chimichanga was also 5/5, great all around. The barbacoa burrito was 5/5, picky child loved it. The Chile relleno was not good at all. Way too eggy on the batter and something odd with the sauce--too much oregano maybe? We didn't even finish it. Unfortunately we didn't get to try their tacos--they forgot to put them in the to-go bag. Very disappointing, My youngest was looking forward to them. Luckily the portions were large enough that we were able to get her fed by sharing with her. So overall what we loved we really loved and our problems will not stop us from trying them again. Over the last year I've eaten here about five times. Every single time it's been awful. The servers are rude and like a million other reviews on here no one takes drink orders, brings menus, and it takes forever to get genuinely awful food to the table. I've brought people to the restaurant that couldn't believe how bad it was on more than one occasion. Unfortunately, it's the only Mexican place for thirty minutes in any direction so you might end up going back for more punishment. Last time I ordered enchiladas with beans and rice. Came out with no beans, and the waitress says "oh we're out of beans". The enchiladas and rice were literally cold, but the enchiladas were so tough that you had to use a knife to cut them. I asked them to heat them up and it took twenty minutes to get them back. By then everyone else was done eating. If you look at some other recent reviews you'll see the bad service and cold/dry food mentioned. I seriously wonder if they're properly handling food if it's not even being heated up, and clearly has been sitting around long enough to get dry and hard to chew/cut. This is just a typical example of how it goes. If there was any competition in town this place would go out of business in a week. AVOID. read more

I wanted to give them more stars because the Carnitas is very good, but twice now, once last year and again this year, we have found plastic in our food. Last year was a piece of hard, white plastic. The waiter apologized but didn't take it off the bill. I didn't finish it but still he was incensed that I insisted he remove it from our bill. This year, we enjoyed our meal and took home what we didn't finish. Back home, when we began to prepare the leftovers, I found two pieces of cellophane in the mix. I wonder if we had eaten any more of the cellophane at the restaurant? Never Again. Chavolo's is OFF LIMITS. When we want good Mexican food, we'll make the drive to Delores. read more

We love, love Mexican food and Margaritas- this place deserves 10 but unfortunately we could only give five stars. Loved the cheese enchiladas but the asada tacos were absolutely awesome! They're not careful with COVID19 precautions -- loose masks, masks dropping below noses, staff not wearing masks around each other & out in the community. Another criticism is all of the styrofoam & plastic used for takeout; we'd gladly pay a surcharge for compostable packaging. We were pre-pandemic, weekly regulars here for years, and I'd rate the restaurant a solid 4 to 4.5 stars back then. If the staff were obviously careful, I'd give a 5-star rating for that consideration & be here weekly with generous tips for takeout. The 3 stars now are for decent, affordable food; tasty margaritas; & efficient service. That's more than generous for staff & owners who aren't as rigorous about pandemic precautions as they should be, so caveat emptor. We & family members won't be back until after the pandemic, if then. read more
