LOVED going to this hidden gem, if you know you know you know this spot, if you don't you should. COFFE SNOB life is spoken for here. I was even given a tour to the back room where the beans are roasted and got to watch and learn how it is done. I truly hope they expand. We were drawn to the space for their Matcha Green Tea - we got it 2 different ways, mine was iced and basic, but amazing, the barista was a gem, she talked to us about the benefits of Matcha , its origins and how to properly prepare it. My partner got it hot and in a latte. They have a cute passport book of where all the Chezzano Coffee is sold - makes it a fun game to fill up the book of visitations. Chazzano Coffee is a wonderful little coffee spot outside of the heart of Ferndale; blink and you might miss it driving east on 9 Mile. The Owner, Frank, takes his business seriously but is personable; you may want to have that in mind as you step in the door. Every person that works at Chazzano is very kind and also friendly. The Coffee: Wow... the Coffee!!! Everything sold is freshly roasted, typically within the last 24 hours. Frank has put a lot of work into knowing how each different type of coffee roasts, what temperatures are used, how much time, and then it's carefully tasted so they bring -just the right- flavor notes out of the coffees. The coffee list is on the board, but if you don't know what you're looking for, take a look at their ever evolving handout of flavor profiles. You know what you want to taste, more then the person behind the counter! If you want berries, cherries, chocolate, nuts, or just an "earthy" cup, tell them, they'll be able to recommend something for you. The prices are on par with many "premium" big brand varieties per ounce. That bag you buy at the store is 12 ounces, not a 16 ounce pound. Keep that in mind when purchasing your coffee here. Also note that its all organic, fair trade, and as fresh as you can get it. Expectations: A perfectly roasted, fresh, hand crafted cup of coffee brewed with your choice of French Press, Pour Over, or Vacuum Siphon. Chazzano will change the way you drink coffee and make it at home (Don't expect syrups, there are none. Don't expect food, there is none). Try your coffee black, try it as it cools, slurp it up. If you think it needs something then add it after. Tips: Re-Use your bag for 10% off another bag of coffee. Free coffee grounds for your garden or compost. Check the Jewish Holiday Calendar before you visit, as they observe and close on some of these days including every Saturday, but they're open Sunday. If it's busy, have some patience. I was impressed the moment I stepped into this peppy coffee shop. Before the smell of freshly-ground coffee beans hit my nostrils, I was warmly (and loudly) greeted by the baristas. The air in the room was fun and welcoming and it was the folks behind the counter that made this place so special. Austin is definitely the life of the party (You won't miss him). The bean choices were endless (I had to ask for recommendations) and I ended up going with an Ethopian Mokasida french press. Very good. Visiting from Manhattan, this place was refreshing. I spent the better part of the early afternoon working on my laptop, tucked away in the corner. Everyone was chatty, energetic and friendly, more so than the typical coffee shop vibe. I love this place! The biggest attraction is that it is a small intimate coffee shop. The barista is extremely knowledgeable on all of the coffees they import from all over the world. There is a cute bar with stools so you almost feel like you are sitting at a real bar, but instead of alcohol you get coffee. I had the French press and it was very good. i'm not a coffee expert enough to taste "notes" or "hints" of flavor, but yet I love coffee...or am addicted, either way I appreciate good coffee shops. I like the intimacy as it was not overcrowded or loud and I got to hear a conversation the barista was having with a frequent customer regarding a new coffee that was brought in...and it peaked my interest so the barista gave me a shot of espresso to try it. needless to say I didn't taste the "hint of wine", but it was the thought that counted. :) I would definitely go back for a nice chat or meeting with a friend or even just to surf the web ...and I have internet at home so that speaks lots of this place. read more

It's simply the best coffee around. They have a phenomenal choice of beans and the employees know about each one. Ask about a coffee bean and you will get an answer - never a blank stare. It's clear everyone is passionate about coffee here. They offer a variety of brewing methods, but to me, nothing is better than sharing a french press with a friend. If you like coffee, you will be very hard pressed to find a better place for it. I find it easy for someone who says "it's just coffee" to label this place as a coffee snob's heaven, but they are most likely very insecure with their own ignorance. The owner is very gentle and honest to his patrons about the quality of his coffee. He can explain the ins and outs of any of the beans, roasts, or flavors, which can seem overwhelming for someone who may be used to getting their coffee from Dunkin' Donuts. It doesn't matter. He has the heart of a teacher, is very kind, and has an infectious passion for good coffee. I only wish it were IN Detroit, but it's well worth the drive out to 9 mile, still. It's the kind of place that when you see the owner's care that he takes with his product, it makes you appreciate life just a little bit more. This place has great coffee! Which is why I give it 4 Stars. I would have given it 3 Star rating due to them never being open when I want a delicious Pick me Up, but I just have to learn their hours of operation, I guess. The staff is very informative. It's almost criminal, they keep you at that counter forever listing the subtle flavor differences between each brew, but it is damn good coffee. And although they condemn cream in the coffee. I came across Chazzano Coffee early this year in a quest to find some freshly roasted beans in the Detroit area. I walked in for the first time not really knowing what to expect, and was surprised by the cool interior and friendly employees. I picked out a press of Ethiopian Harrar, and after enjoying the cup, I brought a pound home for the Chemex. I've since only bought Chazzano beans, and have converted anyone who's tried it to seek out the local quality coffee that Frank and company provide. Every time I've walked in with Frank around, he makes sure to greet me and say hello. I might be a coffee snob. There it is. So-when out of town and looking for great coffee, I look for places that have good reviews and an atmosphere that draws me to want to stay. This is just that! (We visited the Ferndale location). The coffee is all pour overs-don't expect a quick dump-into-a-cup-and-out-you-go visit. The baristas make sure it is done right, and you will be evermore thankful for it. We sat there for over an hour, contemplating great coffee and life. They do have a variety of espresso drinks that they can make, but I really recommend them for their French Pressed coffee. It is commendable for a coffee place to respect the craft so much. Wanted to try this place out after all the press it's been getting in the area. Tried to visit on Saturday, but apparently they only have evening hours so we tried again the next morning - Success! The coffee is very good. Honestly, I'm not big on the whole french press thing - it seems little hoighty-toighty to me, but I can't argue with the results as far as coffee flavor. Fitting in with the hoighty-toighty theme was the negative reaction I got (and I'm pretty sure it was the owner or manager) when I asked for cream. "Cream? What kind of coffee did you have? Is everything ok?" Uh, yeah, I just like a little cream with my coffee... Oh, and for you latte fans, don't even think of asking for flavored syrup - they have none. Chazzano's is small, without a lot of table tops and a big negative for me was the lack of any kind of food options. I understand they're doing coffee, but not to have any kind of food at all makes it a very inconvenient morning option. It's not conveniently located near much of anything. So in summary, they do make a great cup of joe, but they need to lose the attitude and expand the menu options a bit. I'm not opposed to returning, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so and I certainly wouldn't unless all I'm looking for is a plain (black) cup of coffee. read more

Ok I just Yelped on Teavana and the prices that damn near put me into Bankruptcy. So I needed to complement the great folks at Chazzanos for not price gouging me out of drinking tea. I had to go to the Apple store in Sommerset Mall in Troy to look at new power mac's now that expensive. Well after visiting the Apple store I stopped in at Teavana to look at the teas. Big mistake $50 buck later and two small bags of tea. "Golden Monkey" they call it and now I know why! We"ll after I got to my office and came to my senses I realized how much I just wasted, I wanted to thank Frank at Chazzanos for allowing me to buy coffee and not have to hawk my car to pay for it. The coffee is excellent (personally I would suggest the siphon), the surroundings is a little off beat with a wide selection of music playing, Frank (the owner and master roaster) has a true passion for the coffee he roasts, and his staff is knowledgeable. I love the Chazzano! High end quality coffee, especially Ethiopian Harrar, in Ferndale - how can you NOT love this? Yes my love for them has been established, so now please let me vent on what they could do better. Emily P. definitely has a point. Their menu is intimidating and some people there including the owner can be awkward. I had a very similar conversation and experience during my first visit, and I just get the feeling that he was trying too hard. But I guess it didn't bother me as much as it did Emily P. Shy foodies with slight snob shame like me should definitely check out their website and read about the beans before going. The idea of coffee coming from all these "exotic" places is amazing, but when only 1 of the many choices says fair trade, I do have to wonder where my money is going, especially with such reasonable prices. Direct trade would have been nice to see. Lastly the iced coffee is sorely disappointing. This is no cold press - it's hot coffee dumped in ice that immediately melts and dilutes your coffee, and then dumped with more ice so it actually looks like an iced coffee. Ugh - there goes the quality. Now that it's officially spring, I'm not sure I'll want to go to Chazzano if there's no good iced coffee. But good coffee (hot) is good coffee. This review is only for the online store. I grew up in Michigan but do not live there now. After the last roaster I used to order from closed shop, I had 3 friends Chazzano to me. About 1-2 years later I am very happy with every single cup I've made using Frank's coffee beans. I order 2 pounds every ~6 weeks and the shipping is fast and the price is nice. If there is ever an issue, I always am sent an email quickly. If you are a fan of fresh roasted beans, try this place. Everything I've ever ordered has been great with my french press. I haven't found a place local to me that is as good. I'm just looking forward to the next time I fly home to head to the store! read more

With so many varieties of beans and roasts, I always have a little trouble making up my mind about what to order. But when I do order, I am never disappointed. And it is one of the cleanest coffee shops I have ever stepped foot in. My only disappointments are the location and the Solo cups from Costco. If this were in downtown Ferndale, I would go a lot more often. Small parking lot + little street parking = frustration. And if it were downtown, it would be a big contribution to an already fun, walkable district. And the cups, I get they are inexpensive. But really, Michigan Green Safe won't add that much to the bottom line and help make this local place even more local. Complaints aside, this is in my top 2 of coffee places in Detroit. Frank does cupping parties (coffee tastings people, get your minds out of the gutter!) and I know I need to attend one soon. read more

This is hands-down the absolute best coffee in Metro Detroit. I buy all of my beans here. Coffee from other shops just doesn't taste good after experiencing Chazzano. The owner is friendly and passionate about the experience. He wants to forge friendships and relationships with and among his customers. He's become a friend. The staff is also outstanding. Frank is nearly as selective about staffing as he is about beans. I highly recommend drinking for the cycle. Choose a bean and have it brewed a variety of different ways.
