Wow. This is the perfect place for a dinner on a summers day in Maine. We boated over from Portland and someone from the hotel drove us up! The views, the aesthetic, everything about this place is amazing! We dined downstairs and I got the chicken (the sauce was so good) and we got to see views of the sun setting. The Inn has old world charm and reminds one of a bygone era, when guests played croquet and badminton, sipped gin and tonics etc. However, our experience was marred by a few things. We had one of the nicest rooms...private bath and an ocean/golf course view...we paid $555 a night and stayed 3 nights...we reserved the room last year at the end of the season and paid a deposit...we noticed the rates this year were significantly cheaper...our bad luck...but we did think it possible to ask if they had a military discount since we are Veterans...we asked the front desk and they said they had to check with management who are not on site. We asked repeatedly over those 3 days and were told there was no response from management. We never did get an answer...meanwhile, the room had no heat...it was cold and stormy the day we arrived and we were freezing. The chest of drawers in the room had a broken drawer and in it were dirty socks from a previous occupant. The wind blew a screen out of the window...the place has serious maintenance issues. Housekeeping never came once. We planned to leave Sunday, on Father's Day, and the restaurant was having a brunch from 9-2. The evening prior we tried to reserve a table for 0900 so we could be done eating to catch the 1000 ferry back to the mainland. We were told brunch was fully booked already...the next morning we checked out of the hotel at 0915...as we checked out I saw that the dining room was completely empty...,only one couple in there. I asked the desk clerk about brunch and was told again that it had been overbooked. And I pointed to the dining room and pointed out that no one was in there. We could've had breakfast. The wait staff were great but upper management needs to improve their customer service. read more

When you walk up to this restaurant hotel, or better yet pedal up to it on a bicycle, you sense that you're in for a treat. The historic hotel is perfectly maintained and the grounds around it are really appealing and calming. You have to go through the hotel to get to the restaurant but it's worth your time. The Restaurant gets very busy because the entire island tend to rely on it as the go to meal spot during the months of July and August. I ate at this restaurant several times during my visit, and also visited the bar, but that's another story, and each time my meal did not disappoint. I would say my favorite dish is the scallops, which are perfectly seared and come with some peppers. The inn also does a very good hamburger, and every meal is preceded by small basket of biscuits that will knock your socks off. Oh yes-sample some of the cocktails. read more

The two stars are for the view from the Inn, which is lovely. The rest of the experience was zero stars. The room was old and the cover on the chair was in tatters. I had no idea this place was closed for two years and then reopened right before we arrived. One night was enough even though we paid a hefty sum for two nights. You could not pay me to stay here. Visiting for a meal might be fine but I don't think anyone really cares about this place any longer. It needs to be gutted and renovated. There were plumbing issues and just not a clean feel to anything. Really sad since this could be a really nice place if they could fine someone willing to invest money into a rehab. I hope someday it can be made beautiful and be worth the money. Until then I would avoid. Also, I don't know if this is an issue with yelp or the owners trying to manipulate the ratings but it appears that a number of negative reviews have magically disappeared on this place. Although I can't take an issue with the food, the entire experience is one for those who care about little else. The Inn is filthy. The furniture threadbare and repulsively dirty. The grounds unkept. The bathrooms revolting. Its a negative 5 star. Gross, gross, gross. Mainers will take a school bus to the ferry and claim the view is good so its worth it - only in Maine would any of it even exist. The view is no better than any other pedestrian view of low lying land across a small inlet. Gross bus, stupid logistics (totally Maine), totally inconvenient everything and all for for low quality product. I have had the fortune to stay at this Inn, and also spend time there. The Restaurant is excellent. The Executive Chef has done a wonderful job of putting together a menu, that will keep you coming back. The Inn is awesome. Its like stepping back in time. We played cards on the deck. A few games of scrabble. Bocce on the lawn. Croquet on the lawn. Watched the sun rise, and the sun set. Suffice to say it was wondeful. One thing you nee to be aware of. If you are planning on staying out late. Let the Inn know, or you might get locked out. I almost had this happen. Why they even feel they need to lock the doors is beyond me. A real treat. read more

I stayed here for several nights in May 2021. I was excited by the location and chance to stay on an island in a beautiful inn. I even thought if I liked the inn that maybe this would be a cool place to someday get married. I was not aware that the inn had been closed for 2 years (since summer of 2019, understandably not open in summer 2020 due to pandemic). I wasn't aware that I was staying there the opening night until a few days before, when I was called and notified that they were planning a party for the islanders at the inn the first night and therefore, the kitchen would not be open for dinner. This was a problem because there were no other places to eat on the island and the ferry does not come back in the late evening, so could not take a ferry to Portland for dinner and still get back to the island late. This left us with no good options for food. There were scant hors d'oeuvres served. We brought small snacks, but there is no fridge in the rooms so could not bring a meal with us. Not a great start. The room was very basic, small, no frills, no closet, less than I'd expect for the price but ok. The bathroom definitely needs updating - included a clawfoot tub shower, felt old, and the sink was small. Overall did not make me feel very clean. The most surprising thing was that we had no running water in the sink when we arrived! It definitely could have been tested before we got there as there are only about 20 rooms. They had one handyman who was supposed to be running around fixing everything (plumbing, bikes etc) and who said that if he could not get it fixed, they would get a plumber. It was unclear why they could not have just moved us since the bulk of rooms were unoccupied. Later on that evening though, they were able to get our water running. I have never had that happen at any hotel/motel/inn in my life. They have cruiser bicycles you can check out for free and ride around the island. These were very in demand, so they may be all being used when you want them. One of the bikes was in terrible shape, with the front handlebars and wheel turning 180 degrees when I tried to ride it. The main problem was that all of the tires were nearly flat and they were trying to fix them the first night and into the next morning as I saw numerous guests inquiring about them. I do not know why they didn't check these before opening. The bikes are also very cheap and one of the bikes' mudguard over the back tire was rubbing on the tire, so could not spin freely. The other thing I disliked was how they nickel-and-dime for things that should be included. It was chilly in the evening, as the inn is not well insulated (fine for summer and they were building a fire). We asked for some tea and were brought a lukewarm pot of water and a cheap teabag and the staff member asked if we wanted that "charged to the room." This probably cost under 50 cents and it was surprising they would plan to charge us for it - I did not see it on the final bill at least. The good parts: Staff was very friendly. We asked to make s'mores and they got us the supplies (I have no idea if we got charged for this or not). They drove us to the ferry dock so we could take the ferry around the different islands (this is definitely recommended!). They have bicycles to ride around the island - if working properly, this can be a plus but not during our stay. On arrival, I called and a driver and van were at the pier to meet us. There is a great porch to read and enjoy the views (views are good though do include a power plant) and they had corn hole sets to play. We took the ferry around the different islands and to Portland and ate most of our meals in Portland. We ate one dinner at the Inn, which was scallops and was good. Overall, I would NOT stay here again. I want inns to do well but this one needs a lot of work to be worth staying here and paying high prices. I wanted to be understanding that it had not been open for 2 years but it is still no excuse to not have the inn in good working order before opening. Even if they had taken a few days to test things out before opening, this probably could have avoided most of the problems. I would recommend staying in Portland and taking the ferry around to the different islands and if you're interested you can get off on the islands and walk around and eat at the Inn's restaurant. Not worth the high cost of staying on the island and you have no food options there besides the inn's restaurant. It's unfortunate, because the inn could be much better, with renovation of the rooms and bathrooms and making sure that everything is running well before guests arrive. If they want to focus on a having a rustic, camp vibe with limited amenities, that's fine but they should not charge high prices. read more

Driver and van were on pier upon arrival but unavailable for about 15 minutes of waiting around. He came from the dock area at end of the pier after ferry had arrived and we waited. (Shouldn't the arrival of our ferry alert the driver to our presence since they were waiting for us and only us??) So arrive st checkin, told we had just a few minutes til our room is ready, (and we will text you, verified phone number) wait for twenty minutes and decide to borrow bicycles. Drove the boat over...moored off the harbor. Picked up promptly by a pleasent and friendly young man in a little motor launch. So far so good with our daughter and her fiance visiting from Ohio. At the Inn I immediately went into the bar to order some mid day cocktails from the friendly bartender..Tyrone. We were then seated outside on the deck. Lovely views of the bay and occasional golfer hacking up the adjoining course in the 85f heat. After being seated in this wonderful setting, the 'service' now began. Oh dear. How sad. In the past we have enjoyed their home made deviled eggs. Sorry but because you are sitting in the dining area we can't order those as an appetizer with our cocktails. You could walk to the bar order them and then walk them back over to the table yourself? No thank you young man. We just boated, moored, shuttled and walked up here but I don't want to put anyone out. You have everyone and everything working for you and then get let down by a 17 year old robot. Nevermind, we'll just order lunch. 2 Burgers, 1 BLT and a Chicken Salad Sandwich. Ever order a BLT Sandwich and the chef forget the T? One burger had 3 slices of tomato and 1 had none. You like cold french fries? You'll love this place. No one came back to check on us for 10 minutes so we just shared out the three tomatoes in the one burger to augment the BL with some T. Cold fries not much you can do there. Pretty mediocre food. Local beers are good, Tyrone makes a good margarita. Is it worth the trouble of boating, mooring and taxing over? 50/50. I think you'd be better off going to Yarmouth and having lunch at The Dockside Grill...classy and very well prepared and presented. read more

Terrific place for a "dolce far niente" getaway (the sweetness of doing nothing). Great views, manicured lands, polite staff, and a super relaxing environment. Rooms are small but clean and simple, mostly white with just hints of Maine color. The lobby and fireplace room are quintessential Maine coast, with books to read and games to play alongside a crackling fire. The long patio overlooking the harbor is postcard-perfect. We lounged around, drinking ice tea (or cocktails in the evening) and watching the sunset. Read our books, even dozed off. Played some "corn hole" and walked and biked the island. No AC, but fans and a nice breeze made it decently comfy at night. For a mellow, chill couple of days, this is a great spot! read more

We stayed in an ocean-view room w/ private bath on the 3rd floor. The room was lovely. It was smaller than some hotel rooms, but very comfortable with great linens and amenities in the room. What was lacking on our stay was the customer service. They staff are friendly, but don't have the polish one expects when paying this much. We had to beg to be served at breakfast. I would have let this slide, as there were a lot of guests, and I only saw one server. Perhaps she was overwhelmed. However, the next day, we had to wait about an hour for our bruschetta on the porch. We weren't in a hurry on either occasion. However, they told us they would give us a ride to the ferry, and then forgot us, leaving us to run down to the ferry with our luggage just in time to catch it and make our flight. Overall, it was hard to get the staff to remember to take care of us, and this final detail was harder to overlook than the slow service. Also, the WiFi isn't the strongest / best. Just a warning for guests who want to be connected. Being disconnected can be great -- when it's a customer's choice. Beautiful location. Gorgeous grounds. Not enough stars for this place. This is one of those places that I almost hate reviewing so as to keep it a secret. I was a little taken back by the marginal reviews, but finally decided to book it and thank god I did! My mom and I went on a Maine coastal journey - with this being our first stop. This inn has everything. We spent nights playing games by the fire and days reading on the front porch. Every meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) was amazing. They have free bikes to use. We rode around the entire island. Not much else to see, but great exercise! Mornings have a coffee and tea bar. This is an old hotel - so the rooms are small - but oh so cute. We had an ocean view and it was beautiful. I don't think they have Ac - but we didn't need it one bit. The staff are from all over the world and were extremely pleasant! Loved talking with Tyrone at the bar. To say the least- it was all amazing. Ever bit of it!! I think those people with the dismal views may belong at a different place ;) read more

The most romantic weekend getaway! Overlooking a bay with the most beautiful sunsets, Chebeague Island Inn is perfect for escaping a busy life and getting back to basics: good food, good wine, and great company. Sitting under blankets on the porch or biking to the local Clam Shack, the Inn makes everything easy. The staff couldn't be nicer and although the rooms are small, the details are what make the hotel shine. Beds are extremely comfortable, shared bathrooms are spotless and not a hassle to use. The Frette bathrobes and l'Occitaine products made my girlfriend happy, too. All in all, an excellent inn that I'd highly recommend to anyone and everyone. read more

Had dinner here once last summer, undercooked fish and the lobster is not even a while lobster. What is this communist Russia? Staff are all work exchange students, no native Mainers, I'm sure the local island people love that. Rooms are tiny, no AC, no TV, no nothing. You get a nice view of a power plant on the deck. This place needs to be gutted and completely rethought. There are so many better places to stay in Maine. We came to Chebeague because my husband spent his childhood on Bustins Island and he loves Maine. Maine didn't disappoint but the Inn did. When we got off the ferry we had no idea thete was a shuttle that would pick us up because we WERE NEVER TOLD THST FACT AND THERE WAS NO SHUTTLE WAITING AT THE ferry when we arrived. So we shlepped uphill to the Inn with our bags. Upon entering our room I found no toilet bowl seat in the bathroom. Obviously Maintenance forgot to notify the front desk NOT to put anyone in there until he could get it fixed! We got another room next door over the exhaust for the kitchen.. The Inn is old and needs repair, but it was the staff that was wanting. The man on the last day chastised me for wondering where the shuttle was to take us to the ferry. He stuck his arm in my face with his watch on it to show me it was 9:45. I was paying $400 a night and felt he could have been nicer. All in all the staff is inexperienced and somewhat, if not downright RUDE. Whatever happened to "the customer is always right!" We will not be back. read more

This place was booked through the Amtrak Downeaster package and it was the last stop on our trip. We were super disappointed. Don't get me wrong. It's gorgeous here. And relaxing. But the Inn is old. With no elevator. A big problem for my mom who has arthritis in her knee. We were originally booked for the third floor but luckily they were able to move us to the second floor which didn't make the going up stairs too bad for mom. Though I do wish I would have been told upon booking. I didn't even see it on the Inn's website. No TV in the rooms too which is fine if you're looking to disconnect. (It does say no tvs on their website, FYI). The food was good (get the lobster bisque). Service was decent. (It did take a while to get out main course after the appetizer.) Overall, I don't think we'll be coming here again. read more

I have been coming to Portland since 1999. I have wanted to stay at the Inn for about the past 10 years, but I have never had the chance to do so. I follow them on Facebook and have read about them in Downeast magazine. I was so excited when my beau had the chance to come up with me to Portland. I immediately looked to see if the Inn had availability! I booked at 2am! I was so excited. I wrote to my beau and reminded him to pack sneakers so we could borrow the bikes and explore the island. We got a call from the Inn and they asked which ferry we would arrive on. We boarded the ferry, saw a gorgeous clipper in the bay, enjoyed ice cream from cliff island and were met on the landing by a driver. He mentioned several routes we could explore via bike and foot. The shuttle driver is really the only employee of the Inn who I can wholeheartedly recommend. When you first arrive at the Inn it's hard to know where the entrance is. If our driver had not gone through the green door I would have had no clue. The door has no indication that it is the entrance. If we had walked from the ferry I would have gone through the porch I suppose. Our driver carried our bag up to our room on the third floor. We signed the waivers for the bikes and went up to check our room. Our room was lovely. Very bright and and had views of the water and the side yard. So, we went back downstairs and decided to go for a bike ride. Well, gentle reader, there is a reason they have you sign a waiver. They really should not have people riding beach cruiser bikes on a hilly island. I wound up nearly plummeting to my death and unable to brake my bike and gave myself a concussion. We decided to turn back and perhaps have a cup of tea and celebrate that I was in fact not splattered on the rocks for seagulls to pick at. Once back at the Inn, we asked for hot water, which our host told us was hot, it was lukewarm, so he brought us two cups of piping hot water a few minutes later. We enjoyed these on the porch and watched the sunset. Yes, the sunset and the views are the only things this place has going for it. We then went inside to sit by the fire and warm up. It was nearly time for our reservation for dinner so we went over to the hostess stand and they told us we could sit wherever. Well the dining room was so cold that I kept my coat on and my beau brought me a lap blanket. It does not help that the tables are made of copper. I ordered an old-fashioned, to which our waiter asked if I wanted it made with bourbon or scotch, should have been the red flag, but I replied bourbon. He brought me a rather red/pink drink and demurred that they were out of cherries for the season. Reader, I don't know what he brought me, but it was not an old-fashioned. I have had many an old-fashioned sans cherry, and it did not taste like the dreck before me. I told him I did not want the drink nor did I want anything else in it's stead. If you can't make an old-fashioned, I doubt you can make a sazerac or a manhattan properly. On to the bread. Which would be the only thing I would really eat except for the ice cream on cliff island, a pilfered apple from someones front yard and bag of chips from cliff island. Praise to you cliff island! The bread was o-k. Not hot, not warm, but edible. Served with cold butter. Sustained me for 48hrs. Our clam chowder, had a 3 clams in it, 4 potatoes, a baby carrot, and a whole lot of cream. It really should be called cream with clams. It was good, but a stretch. Our lobster risotto was inedible and a complete waste of two beautiful lobsters. When we complain every, we can hear every word back in the kitchen. Extremely unprofessional. They doused it in pernod and you could only taste anise. I was freezing and my appetite had completely disappeared. We went upstairs and to bed by 9:30, so we were up at 555. My beau decided he would take a shower. Well two minutes in the shower and he shouts to me that there is no hot water. So, he must rinse off in freezing cold water. What do you do at 6am at an INN with NO Phones and NO hot water? Well call the front desk from your cell phone. The guy at the front desk was completely befuddled and there were moments of dead silence when he finally admitted he had no idea what to do. So, about 45 minutes later a man knocks on our door and asks if he we have any hot water. Boyfriend runs it again, after a minute it returns to cold. He gives us the key to a room 6 doors away incase we would like to shower there. He does tell us that this has happened before. So, breakfast is included in your stay and starts at 7:30. So there we are. Breakfast is even worse than dinner. Imagine burnt bacon, burnt undercooked oily pancakes. We decided to stay at the Chebeague Island Inn looking to get an amazing romantic getaway - while the island itself is beautiful, our experience at the Inn was nothing but terrible: Two words: Bed Bugs. We both woke up after the second night with a terrible rash, which was very obviously from bed bugs (having had the unfortunate experience of having bed bugs diagnosed by a dermatologist once before, I knew immediately what was causing the rash). While we were waiting to request a different room or a change of sheets, the couple in line in front of us was also complaining about the same issue. When we spoke to the manager/owner regarding the issue, she was very dismissive and rude. Needless to say we left early (and were not refunded for our last night). read more

Impeccable! Everything was lovely on our trip out to brunch. I had heard that the Inn had reopened recently so we decided to try brunch while on a trip to Portland. We enjoyed a leisurely ferry ride out to the island. Upon arrival we learned that the inn was 4 miles away from the wharf - oops. I hadn't expected that! When I called to let them know that we were going to be late, without waiting to learn why the woman immediately offered to send out a driver for us. What a luxurious and unexpected touch! We happily watched the ferry unload, then rode to the inn with a nice kid named Pete. Upon walking in, I fell in love with the great room, which was full of comfy, but not scruffy, furniture. There was a fire burning, which was perfect for the foggy weather. We ate on the veranda overlooking the water. The food was great! I took the opportunity to get a tour of some of the guest rooms, and they are all lovely and so clean! Next year we will stay here instead of in town. read more

1 star is too much for this place. I have gotten food poisoning here 3 times this summer. The management is rude, and does not handle the restaurant well. The lack of islanders working there or eating truly drives home the point of division that the inn has created. By trying to appeal to wealthy clientele they have alienated the local population. Staying at the Chebeague Island Inn really made for a magical weekend getaway from the busy city. The staff was nice and helpful, the rooms were absolutely beautiful, and the location was perfect fora nice relaxing weekend. The shared bathrooms (which are standard for a portion of the rooms) were very clean and very nice, with private stalls and clean towels available. We also had a sink in the room, so the only thing "shared" turned out to be the shower. Either way, it was a pleasant surprise to have it be so easy and clean. The staff was also helpful in directing us to a nice place to go have a bottle of wine while sitting by the water, as well as finding us kayaks to rent and paddle around (highly recommended! It was a blast! Absolutely beautiful). When finding us kayaks, things seemed a little hectic and ill informed (They forgot to quote us a price, but what can you do? It was reasonable anyways). That being said, this was the only time over the weekend that the staff was anything less than very professional, so we can overlook that. The only thing that was totally out of place amongst this beautiful, professionally run resort, seemed to be the manager (or owner?). As we were checking out, she took the time to rudely address the staff member helping us with a condescending tone of voice and a look of exasperation when the staff member asked her a quick question. Furthermore, she was dismissive of the staff member's attempt to get us a receipt, without asking whether we had requested one (Which we had, but apparently you don't get a receipt if you book through a website. But we should get one, in order to absolve us of unexpected room charged post-checkout). Her scoffing noises, sighs, and rolling eyes were so distasteful when compared to the professionalism that her staff had exhibited. Perhaps she only behaves this way out of frustration with her foreign staff (they participate in a foreign student summer work program), but that almost makes her behavior worse, as she should expect these workers to need a little more patience and help. Her behavior was the single tarnish on an otherwise great experience. While I typically hate reviews that severely punish a businesses ranking because of a single, poor service experience, the fact that such poor behavior and service came from the woman in charge compels me to do exactly that. So, in summary: Pros: Everything, this place was awesome. Cons: The main manager woman acted completely unprofessionally and was unnecessarily rude to her staff in a way that isn't acceptable in any situation whatsoever. read more

My boyfriend and I attended the Amy's Treat Auction and were lucky enough to be the highest bidder on an overnight stay at Chebeaque Island Inn. So on June 18th we parked our car at the Rt1 lot in Cumberland and took the shuttle to the ferry. Once on the ferry it was a quick 15 min ride and it dropped us off at the base of the inn where we were picked up and brought up to the Inn. From beginning to end everything was amazing!!! We had a comfortable room overlooking the bay with a private bath. We played golf, went bike riding, relaxed on the porch drinking cocktails, we had a delicious dinner on the porch while watching the amazing sunset.and we ended the night relaxing by the fireplace in the Great Room. A big Thank You to everyone that made our getaway a memorable one. We are really hoping they donate another overnight stay to the Amy Treat Auction we would definitely bid on it for sure. Quintenessential Maine Coast. It doesn't get better than this. The food is excellent, service attentive and setting to die for. I dined here with my parents and aunt and we enjoyed every minute of it. The hotel, under new ownership, is a diamond in the ruff and I have no doubt is about to take off. I can't wait to go back for another delicious meal while watching the Maine sun set. The Lobster Risotto w/ Marscapone was perfectly creamy and decadent with tons of lobster. My families meals of the swordfish and hanger steak were also exceptional. The trip out there requires some logistical planning, but the Ferry ride either from Portland or Yarmouth is well worth the trip. Can't wait to see what the new owners have done by next summer! read more

Very, very disappointing due to terrible service and poor value. We are normally huge supporters of local businesses and dine out frequently. This was our go-to place via boat for dinner with out of town guests; however, it is now under new management and we won't be back. The dinng room service is terrible. Dinner took two hours and we didn't even have time for dessert as their launch service was shutting down, something we had to ask since no one was going to bother to tell us. One of the many servers did come by to say that the wait was because kitchen was backed up and that our meals were being plated and it took another 20 minutes for the food to arrive. While the food was good, the portions were laughably small, especially relative to the price point. You can't charge $30 for lobster and then serve only the tail. Furthermore, none of the entrees were served with sides, nor were sides available separately on the menu. In summary, when Chebeague Island Inn was initially sold and renovated, it had a terrific views friendly service and great food at reasonable prices. It now appears to be left with only the views. I strongly recommend waiting until the next management change before we go back. read more

Between the food and the Inn itself, you really can't beat this place. We were on the water with friends and decided to go here for lunch. Called the Inn and they told us to hook up to a mooring. They sent a nice college kid in a small tender to get us. He then drove us up to the Inn. They took our names for lunch and we waited in the nicest waiting room ever - a few Adirondack chairs on the lawn overlooking the golf course and Casco Bay. A round of drinks here and then to our table on the screened in porch. To be honest, they could have then served us McDonald's and I would have been happy. Instead, we had some excellent food. Oyster Po'Boy was filling, crispy, and done perfectly. One had the mussels which he loved and two had very nice steak salads. If you have a boat, or a friend with a boat - go here! Or... take the ferry for a wonderful experience. Oh yeah, another round back on the lawn. Decided to walk back to the dock. Just let the owner know we'd be ready for the ride back to the mooring in 10 minutes. The kid met us as we got to the landing and took us back out to our boat. Life really is good. read more

Except for our waitress who was cheerful and responsive I sadly have nothing good to say about the Chebeague Inn and I am quite familiar with Chebeague Island and the Inn. From the moment our launch arrived we encountered an attitude reminiscent of Eastern Europe in the 60's where no one cared about quality of life or food. The quality of the food was nothing to write home about although menu prices would have you expect otherwise. There was no bread, only mediocre, sweet biscuits. With all our wonderful bakeries in Portland what could be so difficult in bringing them to Chebeague? Our drinks and first courses arrived in time, my beet salad was ok but my daughter's salad was doused in dressing. After that we had at least a 45 minute wait before dinner arrived. Again, our waitress was apologetic and our food finally did arrive. The hamburgers were fine but my scallops were seared but raw and I had to send them back. Minutes later my plate was put back in front of me without comment and whatever was already on my plate pushed in a small pile around the scallops, not refreshed. We declined dessert since it was getting late and we had a boatride back home. To top off the evening we got a ride back to the dock and a launch ride to our boat without a cheerful word from the staff person. Other than visiting the Inn for the view and a sunset cocktail I suggest returning to Portland for dinner. Here's to hoping for improvement in 2017! I have never had a worse experience. Came off our boat to dine at the Inn on a Thursday in the summer 2014. Was asked if we had a reservation, and when we said "no," were told it was not likely we could be seated (it was 5:30 and the dining room was empty) because the chef required a certain amount of time per reservation and they had people coming in at 7. What? We were told we could eat on the porch with a "porch menu." It was about 60 degrees and windy, but we decided to try. They sat us around the corner and apparently forgot to tell anyone we were there because we had to get up and go in search of a server. When we tried to order at the bar, we were told we had to be seated and wait for the server to come. When we expressed that the server hadn't come and told him that we were told we couldn't sit in the dining room but were still not being served on the porch, he said: "Well, maybe next time you'll make a reservation." As we headed back to the porch in hope of finding a server, I overheard a short woman with dark hair (I believe she's the owner) saying: "well, they aren't dressed for dinner anyway." We sat back on the porch and debated our options, but we were tired and hungry. We finally got the attention of a server and ordered something that sounded like lobster tacos. The came two to a plate, were about the size of my pinky finger, and consisted of a thin sweet "taco" shell that was more like waffle, some way-too-hot harissa paste, and little else. We both ate our tacos and almost $60 later (with drinks and tip), we left there feeling abused and unsatisfied. I peaked around the corner, now at almost 7 p.m., and there was still no one in that dining room. As we were walking back to the dock and debating our empty stomachs, an islander asked if we wanted a ride. We got in and chatted for a minute and she said the islanders never eat at the Inn. What a wise bunch. She said they eat at the Clam Shack down the road. Long and short of it is that she gave us a ride to the Shack, where we were welcomed, given a satisfying meal of full-belly clams in crumbs, housemade tartar, handcut onion rings, fresh coleslaw, a lobster roll and crisp fries, and two huge Gifford's ice cream cones for just under $40, and left with huge smiles. We will come back to Chebeague, travel there as often as we can, because we love the place. The people are wonderful, the island charming, and the trip a dream. What we will NEVER do again, though, is eat at the Inn. If you ever have the chance to visit the island, avoid the looming yellow nightmare that overlooks the Stone Wharf, and walk about 3/4 of a mile down the road to the Clam Shack.
