We most often would drive out here in the winter months and even with the snow on the ground the streets are very well-maintained; so much more so than South of the Tappan Zee. There are cute little shops in town and the residential parts have some beautiful farm-like homes, nestled into the wilderness. With each visit, we feel like we've transported ourselves to some other place because it is so tranquil. Definitely one of our favourite drives.

With its bumpy, sometimes one lane roads, its deer herds, and its silent pond in the center of town, it calls to mind mystical experiences. Monroe, for all its serenity, is where Velveeta and Liederkranz (recently revived by a Wisconsin dairy in 2010) were invented- http://www.hvmag.com/Hudson-Valley-Magazine/April-2013/Where-Does-Velveeta-and-Liederkranz-Cheese-Come-From-Monroe-NY-Of-Course/ It says so on their town sign, enshrining cheese. A cheesy place (ironically, the oldest continuously operating dairy/cheesemaker is Marin French, west of Petaluma, the Rockies&the Mississippi) Velveeta, in which perishable dairy becomes imperishable- http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/there-is-no-shortage-history-when-it-comes-velveeta-180949312/?no-ist Monroe is also a religious place. There are Hasidic Jews from nearby Kiryas Joel&missionary sisters in full habits meeting at the local post office. It's no wonder upstate New York was part of the Second Great Awakening of the 1800s. Though NYC is the Big Apple, Monroe is its heart in Orange County.
