I used them a couple times, no problems. One of those times they were five minutes late. But I'm a reasonable guy, that's fine. And then the third time: I called earlier in the day to get to a 4:00pm train. Asked them to come at 3:30. I live less than two miles from the train station. That gives them ample time to get me there, right? They never showed up. I called at 3:40 to get an update: "He's on his way. Hit a bit of traffic." I called at 3:50: "He's about two minutes away." I then called at 4:00 to cancel the cab because I missed my train. Sorry guys. You were doing pretty good up until then. But if you can't get a cab over, at least be honest with me so I can investigate other options. read more

I created a bit of a crisis (not their problem I know) for my daughter who needed to catch a 6am flight. Ok, Ok I've been slammed at work and forgot to send/transfer(theres so many options, anyway) my child traveling money. I saw they took credit cards so I called. The phone rang at least 7x's. Yeah it was 2:30a but the only business hours I saw posted on YP are Sun 11:00 pm - 12:00 pm. The driver informed me they would only take a credit card if I was in the car. (I'm in Indiana) Ok I'll buy that I guess. Even though my daughter was being picked up from her dorm. She has a student & state ID same last name. So I explained to the guy I will Western Union my daughter cash does he mind waiting with the meter running while she runs in and pick it up to pay for her cab fare to the airport. I mean she will be leaving her luggage in the cab. "No, I won't do that" So I sorta pleaded a little bit. "No" was his response I have to be honest...out of frustration and disbelief (I've never met a cabbie who doesn't mind that meter running while they're parked) I said your cab service sucks and just laid the phone down to sigh with out hanging up (I never hang up anymore, whats the use? That click is long gone lol). He said somethings( I don't know what) before he hung up. I wrote this review to say THANKS GONZALEZ CAB INC.!!!!! YOU GUYS ROCK!!!! Will use you on all her returns and departures going forward. Gonzalez had no problem with my request. He simply confirmed the pick up, stop over address, destination and phone numbers and wah la. My daughter is in the air on her way home. I am pleased with checker cabs. The dispatchers are usually nice & the drivers are often nice (maybe quiet on occasion, but that doesn't bother me). However, it is hard, (if not impossible) to get a cab at certain busy hours. I recommend scheduling your ride well in advance of going out. read more

We had a dishonest driver last Saturday from Al Forno to the Biltmore Hotel. He drove us all around on Rt 95 to get to the hotel. When I told him he was going the wrong way, he said he was avoiding traffic. It was 8:30PM with no traffic. Fare was double what it should be. read more

After being extremely disappointed with big daddy taxi's inability to do anything correct I called checker cab. They were pleasant on the phone, arrived almost exactly when they said they would, and the driver was great. I believe his name is Walter. He is friendly, chatty, and fun to ride with. Friendly driver but was 15 minutes late. In my book the main thing a cab company has to do to win me over is to arrive on time.

On a rainy Monday afternoon two days before Christmas I ordered a taxi for 3:30pm to go to the airport. He came at 3:44pm, and was a really nice, down to earth guy. I prefer rideshare services like Lyft to cabs, but when I have a redeye flight I need to catch early morning, Checker Cab has been my default cab service the past few trips. A lot of the cars are older/beat up, but I've had good luck with Checker getting to me on time or ahead of schedule, which is the most important thing. Bonus tip: The Checker cabbies I've rode with have had the funniest stories of all the cab companies I've rode with in Providence, so don't forget to ask the cabbie about his/her most memorable fare. read more

I had an awful experience with this cab company. I was verbally assaulted by one of their drivers, by the name of Jay, and the company refused to rectify the situation. I took a cab from Thayer Street down to Kennedy Plaza to catch a bus. When we arrived at Kennedy Plaza the ride was $8.00. I gave the driver a $20 and asked for $10 back. He said that he had no change and as I took the $20 back he started screaming at me for not having smaller bills. When I said that I would not pay $20 for an $8 cab ride, he started cursing and screaming at me to give him the $20. He then snatched my bag with my laptop/wallet etc. into the front seat with him and said he wouldn't give it back to me until i gave him the $20. He threw five $1 bills at my face, so he did in fact have change. I gave him the $20 in order to get my stuff back--he threw the bag at me and sped off. I was shaking/crying and when I called the company they refused to apologize/rectiy the situation. I do not recommend using this company. read more

Absurdly late and incompetent. Ordered a cab for 9:50am to catch a bus at 10:20am. At 9:55 I called Checker Cab to ask where the cab was and the man on the line responded "uh, oh, a cab, yeah. I'll send one right away. It'll be there in 7 minutes." Ten minutes later I called again. "1 to 2 minutes." Same thing happened again and then finally at 10:20, the same time I needed to be on the bus, the cab slowly rolls up to the door. If you are desperate and absolutely need to use this company, make sure you get them to come early enough so that you still have time to call a different company and make it to wherever you're going on time. read more

The cab situation is dire in Providence. With that in mind, I was ready to be disappointed when calling Checker Cab. I'm happy to say that all my fears were unnecessary. The driver showed up right on the dot for a 5AM pickup, the cab was clean, and the driver super pleasant! My trip wasn't very far, but Checker cab was happy to pick me up, and the dispatcher that I called to book the night before, was very professional and nice. I am also a former Big Daddy customer, and I will be using Checker Cab from now on. read more

Based on the last reviewer's review, I called Checker Cab 5 hrs ahead of time to request a pick-up from the East Side to the Providence train station and they grumpily told me that they do not and will not book ahead of time (just 10 minutes before I need a cab, not reassuring, based on the otter reviews for their lateness) and that I should call some other taxi company instead, which I ended up doing. I mentioned that this was for business travel and that I would like to find a regular taxi company for ongoing corporate travel needs (new company I'm working at). I called Corporate Taxi (based on the other Yelp reviews) whose dispatcher was kind, courteous, and professional. We'll see if they show up at the scheduled time or not. read more

I called two hours in advance to get picked up at 11:30. The cab was thirty minutes late, causing me to miss my train. I wouldn't complain about delays had I called the cab at 11:30, but since I scheduled it in advance I would have expected them to be there within a reasonable amount of time. That being said, I don't think it was the driver's fault, but rather bad planning/over booking by whoever is in charge. The driver was very friendly and helpful. read more

Worst freakin taxi service ever. They are terrible and have horrible communications skill. I called at 9:07 because I was in a terrible strain and needed to be at another location within a small time frame. I was hoping to get there by 9:30. Driving it takes 10 minutes TOPS to get there. So I call them and a pretty decent clerk answers the phone and I get connected to a driver who says he'll be there within 10 minutes. I make it very clear to him that I'm in a hurry and he say's ok. 10 minutes go by and no word from him, then another 10 so I call and I'm informed that he's on his way. Then another 10 and I'm getting furious so I call again and get the same response. Finally at 9:52 I call and tell them to cancel the cab, I didn't even care if he was two blocks away or not. You don't so that, if you knew you were going to be late at least have the decency to inform me. I ended up being super late to probably one of the most important meetings of my career. If you're a taxi service you should at least have communication skills and understand how valuable time is to your customer. Never going with them again and I wouldn't even recommend them to my worst enemy. I'd give 0 stars if it were an option. read more
