Driver tonight going from Patton to Haywood in West Asheville almost caused an accident. You can't be a shitty driver if you drive a cab.

The gentleman was friendly on the surface - but he texts while he drives on the freeway! I was terrified. I let him know, politely, several times that I was uncomfortable and he didn't care - he just kept saying, "It's fine, it's fine" and ignored me while appearing angry. You put your life in another's hands when you get in their car and they don't take safety seriously. Texting while driving can be deadly. I was so relieved to step out of that car. i scheduled a cab ride to the Asheville Airport with this company the day before I needed to travel. A woman told me they could do it and took my information. The morning of the ride I called to confirm they would be in time and was told she was on the way to Henderson to get a van repaired. After telling me she would come get me I reiterated the time constraint so I asked her to call back with an arrival date. I won't bore you with what happened next. Suffice to say we drove to the airport and paid for 2 weeks of parking. Do not trust Checkers. Or, if you do, have a plan b. You will need it. jks read more

I used them for a trip from the Asheville airport to Lake Junaluska and Ben, the driver, was unbelievably kind, patient and competent in bringing me to and from my destination. I highly recommend this company- this was the ONLY taxi company willing to transport me back to Asheville from Lake Junaluska. I would use only this service in the future. read more

A group of 10 of us used Checker Cab extensively throughout our vacation weekend in Asheville. Checker Cab transported us everywhere from downtown to Highland Brewing Company to our cabin in Fairview. The rate was approximately $40+ (tip included) for about 5 passengers and a 14-mile, 20-minute drive between downtown Asheville and Fairview. We encountered a few different drivers during our visit, two I remember specifically: John and Ricky. They were both pleasant and friendly. They got us to where we needed to go safely and in a reasonable amount of time. John was a jokester and would tell our group funny jokes sometimes. Both drivers were knowledgeable about Asheville and were able to answer just about every question we threw at them. Since we had a big group, we'd often have to split into vans that seated about 6 people each. The vans were ordinary and not anything special. I believe their whole fleet is like this. One of the vans, while mostly clean, was in bad shape. For example, the rear view mirror was missing and the control panel for the rear vents looked like it had been ripped out or fallen off. The cup holders in the back needed to be cleaned. Throughout the weekend, Checker Cab proved to be reliable getting us from Point A to Point B. They were at our location usually within 30 minutes of calling dispatch. Specific drivers could be requested as well. read more

Ok so if you decide to come to Asheville to do a brewery tour, lesson # 1 is to book in advance. Nope I didn't do that so I decided to put my own tour together and this is where Checkers Cab & the now famous Uncle Snoopy came in! Uncle Snoopy was a gracious host on our tour to the Troy and Sons Distillery. Gee what a fun guy he was!!! With his stories of his past days with pork rinds and pizza eating contests, we thoroughly enjoyed the intriguing conversation. What I love most about my travels is meeting new people and Checker Cab met - no, exceeded - my expectations. Uncle Snoopy picked us up and dropped us off in a timely fashion and shared with us his expertise on living in Asheville for 36 years. He was smart, funny and truly charismatic. And, most importantly, he drove us safely to our desired locations. The cab rides with him have been one of the highlights of my trip so far. Calling Checker Cab was easy and convenient. We called and requested a pick up time and a vehicle large enough for 5 people. They arrived on time and with a van! Perfect! I have used this cab service several times during my stay in Asheville. Every time I called them they were 45 minutes late and on one occasion I had to call again because they forgot to send a cab for me. On one of my trips, the driver read the address I handed to him and drove me to the wrong side of town before realizing his mistake and brought me to my correct destination. I was charged an additional $40 for his mistake, resulting in a $70 cab fare. I was so frustrated I walked all the way back to my hotel. Use a different cab service. I regret ever calling these people. read more

Dispatch answered immediately, cab arrived promptly at 330 am (give or take 10). I'm happy with that. Cab wreaked of cigarette smoke and the driver's ashtray was full. I cannot stand being in a smoker's car! If the company owner reads this please update your policy on cigarette smoking inside of your vehicles - it's not 1950 anymore... I would have given more stars if it were not for the smoke and the dirty cab. Aside from that I had a very positive experience. read more

Usually when people call cabs it's because they need one, and I was in that spot this morning after crashing on a friend's couch. Cab arrived within 15 minutes (as they said it would), and the driver was very friendly and talkative but not intrusive with conversation. She could use some new wheels though. It was creeky and the van's automatic doors were malfunctioning. Plus side: it was inexpensive. read more

Moon is amazing! Excellent driver but even better tour guide. Having never been to Asheville before I received the best possible orientation on my ride from the airport to my hotel. She knew incredible history, details and stories of the area, buildings and people. And gave me a "list" of must do activities, restaurants, bars, and how to make the most of the all around Asheville experience. I felt like I bought a personal tour and got the cab ride free. Called them up and they had no problem sending me a taxi ASAP and I wanted to make sure they accepted debit cards (they do), dispatcher was overall knowledgeable. The driver called me 15 minutes later and he had went to a similar named street across town, I gave him the proper directions (I had told the dispatcher what was close to my apartment, the mall, but I guess this information wasn't given to the driver which cost us both time) and he arrived after about another 15 minutes, so only a 30 minute wait total. Not bad! The driver was nice and the taxi was clean and didn't smell badly. I explained where I needed to go and he knew right where it was. He took a pretty direct route and didn't try to take the long way around for more money which I appreciated greatly. He drove like all taxi drivers, which isn't a negative or a positive if you're used to cabbies! I paid with my debit card and it wasn't a big deal (some cabs don't like to take cards) and he thanked me for his tip. Overall I was quite pleased with the service and speed. The only recommendation I can think of for improvement is better communication between dispatch and their drivers. I will gladly use them again! read more

Called the day before to arrange an airport transfer for an early flight to the Asheville airport. Was informed the charge would be higher for the early morning ride, which was fine. 15 minutes after the scheduled pick-up time, no car had arrived. We called, and were told someone was en route. Waited another 15 minutes, and no car arrived. Tried calling another 3 times and no one answered, and no car ever came. We live less than 15 minutes from downtown and less than 10 minutes from the airport, so any "airport shuttle" service should be able to easily service our address. Our traveler almost missed their flight--do not rely on Checker Cab. read more

After having horrible experiences with the cab companies in this town using checkered cab has been a relief. It not owned by the same shady people as the other companies and it does show. On time, polite, and a little less expensive (probably because they don't take the long way to jack up the fare). Nothing fancy, but everything a cab company should be. read more

My girlfriend and I ordered a checker cab after a show at the Orange Peel. We saw one, got in, and started driving up the street. After a stop light or two, the lady asked us if we were the ones that called a cab - to which we replied yes. She then said she was the wrong cab and promptly TURNED AROUND and went back to drop us off at the location she picked us up - so we could get in the OTHER CAB. It was like musical chairs. Never once has this happened to me. The other cab we got in smelled like vomit, which was a perfect cap to this whole experience. F+ for checker cab! read more

They are always LATE, and sometimes they forget to send the cab. There is one person in the phone that treated me very bad, he pretended he did not understand me a word (it seemed a racist attitude). I had occasion to use a cab service today and I was not familiar with the companies in this area. I called the first listed and they told me I was to far out, this based on their website was not true, they did not want a short fair. They did recommend Checker. I've rode in many different cabs in the Asheville area, but i have NEVER been so disgusted with this Company. The dispatcher was a complete Bitch, all i needed was a ride and she kept telling me that it was too late at night(11:30 p.m) to be asking for a ride, and for me to call someone else. So i waited for a little while and called back again and got a different dispatcher, he on the other hand provided me with a cab. When the cab arrived ten minutes later, the driver was high on marijuana (loud and proud) and the cab wreaked of cigarette smoke and was littered with trash. We had ordered a cab to pick us up at home and take us to the Asheville Airport. We called the company in the morning of the day of our pick up to confirm the time. No one showed up and no one called us. We tried calling the company numerous times and no one answered the phone. After waiting 20 min for them, we drove ourselves to the airport and now have to pay for parking for an extended period of time. I was very disappointed in this cab service. I called the phone number on the home page to schedule a pick-up for the next day to take me to the airport. The individual I spoke to got my address and telephone number. The next day, I called to confirm and got no answer. The voicemail box was full. I called 4 times with the same result. The driver never showed up. I have never had this problem with any other taxi company - ever. I can see why people would turn to Uber. read more
