My wife and I went last night, on a Friday night. The place wasn't too crowded, the service was fantastic, just wish I could remember our servers name, cause she was awesome! Our drinks were never empty, she was very attentive & friendly, couldn't have been better. As for the food, it was also very, very delicious. I had the 10 oz filet along with a salad. My wife had tuna also with a salad. My steak was cooked perfectly, the seasoning was spot on, my bride said her tuna was fantastic as well! We ordered a filet mignon but I don't think that was the cut of meat we were given. They were out of the grouper, so we also ordered the salmon, but it had some kind of sweet glaze which was not listed on the menu. Complimentary Bread was a bit salty as well. They were also out of chicken that night as well as Keylime pie. Very odd as all of these items are listed on the menu. read more

My wife, sister and I had dinner here the other night. The shrimp cocktail could have been chilled a bit more, but was delicious. The cocktail sauce was tasty and not overly spiced with horseradish or hot sauce, as can happen. My wife loved the calamari with the aoli instead of marinara. The filets and my ribeye were all cooked perfectly medium rare. I thought the asparagus was cooked right, my wife and sister could have had it cooked a bit longer. The gouda potatoes were delicious. A true gem. This restaurant has consistently remained my favorite in town since it opened. I absolutely love the crab-cakes they are the best I've ever eaten and hands dow n have turned me into somewhat of a crab-cake snob. The fillet is also delicious but it's hard for me to veer away from the crab. Last weekend, I also had a cup of the corn crab chowder, it did not disappoint! My wife and I had dinner here on a Sunday evening. We had no trouble getting reservations. Friday and Saturday evenings are much busier. The building is nothing special, but the tables are elegantly set with linens and a flower. We had the pimento cheese dip with pita appetizer. Both the dip and the pitas were excellent. I had the chef special, which was Chilean Seabass with a Cajun cream sauce over rice. It was fantastic. Best fish I've had in a restaurant in a long time. It was flaky and tender with no fishy taste. Located near a manufacturing area, the restaurant & bar appears to be in a building formerly occupied by an old-school diner. The fixtures are a cool mix of old school meets modern. There was a live torch singer the evening we dined belting out classics that really emphasized the old-school vibe. The wine selection is modest, but in an area where every other restaurant is either fast-food or a chain, this place is a hidden gem. Our steaks were perfectly cooked, and the veggies were excellent as well. The only negative was an overzealous light and fog system for the singer given the small size of the restaurant. We travel to Danville frequently, and we'll definitely return! read more

My partner and I were visiting Danville for the weekend and looked forward to a dinner at a local restaurant out of the "River District". The Schoolfiled seemed well-reviewed so we made reservations for 7:00 PM. We arrived a bit early and though there were a lot of open tables the waiter was directed by the manager to seat usd in a sectioin that was rather crowded. I asked for a table in the front section which was less crowded and the owner/manager rather begrudgingly allowed the waiter to give us a different table. Though the fried oysters were listed on the menu as an appetizer I asked the waiter if I could get them as a main course and he said "yes" so I ordered them, specifically asking that some melted butter be served with them. Nevertheless when the main course was brought to the table the serving was appetizer sized with no melted butter. It took the waiter about five minutes to bring a small dish of butter--not melted! My partner ordered a filet medium rare. It came to the table cooked rare--a red cool-to-warm center and when she sent it back it came back as though it had been stuck in the microwave for a minute. Everthing--even the potatoes--was too salty. I would have given two stars but my partner suggested three. In any case it was not a satisfactiory dining experience. read more

We popped in to The Schoolfield late on a Saturday evening while visiting out of town. The Yelp reviews were great and the photos looked amazing. Once again, Yelp did not disappoint! We had the pimento cheese dip, Caesar salad, and the chicken with fried green tomatoes, Gouda mashed potatoes, and broccoli. Everything was made to perfection. The pimento is served warm with deep fried pita. It is the best pimento that we have ever had and we have tried pimento at a lot of places. The Caesar salad was a great ratio of crisp romaine, Parmesan shavings, and dressing. We were almost full from the appetizer and salad but when the main course arrived we dug deep to finish it out. The blend of flavors from the sauce, perfectly seasoned and cooked chicken, the cheesiness from the Gouda mashed potatoes in conjunction with the crispy fried green tomatoes was nothing short of perfection! Added to that was perfectly cooked and seasoned broccoli. In addition, the atmosphere and service was top notch. The restaurant is small and intimate, complete with candlelight and fresh roses. We will be making the drive just to come and visit this great spot! If you are in the area, we highly recommended! You will not leave disappointed! read more

I cannot praise this restaurant enough. We decided to take a day an go to the Casino and spend the night. For dinner we chose The Schoolfield Restaurant. What a great choice, started with a house salad which was fantastic contained walnuts and dried cranberries. Was served with homemade vinaigrette dressing and was one of the tastiest salads I have ever had. For entrees my wife had scallops in a mushroom and smoked bacon sauce. The sauce was a perfect complement to the delicious scallops. The side of broccolini and orzo were just as tasty. I opted for the Ribeye, done perfectly. When ordering I saw it came with smoked Gouda mashed potatoes and was not sure about that but these turned out to be the highlight of the meal. The garlic asparagus was also quite tasty. Finding this hidden gem in this nice little town was a great ending to our weekend away. It could compete with any 4 star restaurant in any major city of the US. When ordering steak, a REAL steakhouse does not deliberately undercook the meat. If I ask for medium to medium-well, I certainly do not want RARE. When I had to send it back to the kitchen, I was told they cook it less than desired on purpose! The owner was fussing out the help, and generally being a jerk to work for, so I will not go back. The best thing I got was the lemon cello cake. Husband's filet was good so there was one redeeming meal out of three. Danville needs a good steakhouse. read more

The service was outstanding! We truly appreciated the attention, even the little things like filling our water glasses. The food- well, outstanding as well! We went for the first time tonight. We had reservations but they weren't busy, so the reservations weren't necessary. That's a shame because it was an amazing experience. It was quiet and romantic. Our server, Samantha, was great. She had recommendations and they were spot on. We had a bottle of wine and it was wonderful. The food was beautifully plated and delicious. We went last night for the first time to celebrate my husband's birthday. I had the crab cake starter and a 6 oz filet. My husband had the Schoolfield deviled eggs and a rib eye. My father-in-law also had a rib eye. Our friends had shrimp cocktail, shrimp & grits, and orange salmon. The crab cake was out of this world, something straight from heaven! The Schoolfield deviled eggs were also very good. The steaks were outstanding, cooked to perfection. My filet was one of the best steaks I've ever had! Our friend enjoyed his shrimp & grits, and considering that we have all lived in the Low Country, that's a compliment. Our other friend said that his orange salmon had excellent flavor, but the salmon was so dry that he didn't finish it. For dessert, my husband chose Key Lime Pie and our friend chose chocolate cheesecake. The Key Lime Pie had a great flavor, and the cheesecake was good as well. I gave 5 stars in spite of the salmon because overall, we could not have asked for a better experience. The ambience was nice, but just a little dark and we had to use cell phones to read the menu. Was in town for Alumni Weekend at Hargrave Military Academy looking for something different that I can't get back home... you know, no chain restaurants, etc. Found this gem on YELP, and called in for reservations which were promptly taken and confirmed. We arrived at our scheduled time and were promptly seated by the staff. It's a quaint little establishment across from the old industrial areas of the Dan - it's quite a contrast but it's the old past and the new renascence of Danville, so it works. Anna took our orders while answering our obscure questions about the menu. Very polite, helpful, and knowledgeable. My son is a picky 11 year old - so in absence of a kids menu, we settled on the meatball appetizer which he absolutely loved. We opt'd for the pimento cheese and pita bread appetizer which is not on the menu but was a special that night. It too, did not disappoint - plenty of flavor and just something we couldn't stop eating. As a matter of fact, when Anna checked on us to see how things were going, I said "horrible", which drew a hush immediately - but I followed up with "I can't stop eating this, it's evil!" I ordered up the 8 oz filet, Pittsburgh rare with sauteed mushrooms and a crab cake (Oscar) on top. It was melt in your mouth perfection. Everything was spot on. I have eaten here at least 10 times in thr last 4 months. The food is of an excellent quality, tastes fantastic , wonderfully prepared and presented and makes dining a great experience. Excellent food. The meats are delectable. This is the only place distant from the Chesapeake Bay where you can get a REAL crab cake. The lamb and pork dishes are always to perfection. The wine list is constantly getting better. You really can't beat this place -- even if you drive 100 miles. This is really a phenomenal restaurant. (Only the ice cream is mediocre. My wife and I were in Danville for the night and wanted a good dinner that was not a chain restaurant. Did some research and found the Shoolfield Restaurant. We got crab cakes for an appetizer and it was great; tasted a lot like the ones I grew up with in Maryland. The fresh baked bread and oil was perfect and we ate too much of it. For dinner we got filet's; I got the 10 ounce, my wife the 6 ounce. They were cooked on a grill to perfection, seasoned just right, and came out just the way we ordered. The cuts of meat were tender, and better than most steaks from a high-end steakhouse in a large city. The mashed potatoes, and old bay fries were probably more carbs than I needed but couldn't stop eating them. Great customer service, waitstaff, and all around worth 5 stars.
