This was my first visit to Checked Pig and it was a pleasant experience. The moment you open the door to the entrance, the smell of smoke teases your nostrils! Respectable BBQ, but getting expensive... We generally stop by The Checkered Pig when in town to visit family... Dropped in again for lunch - Pretty tasty. I got the 2 meat platter (chicken and ribs), green beans, and mac n' cheese; my wife got the chopped pork sandwich and green beans. All in all, the food and service was good (as usual)... I'd give it an Ole Dave Portnoy 6.8 - Respectable, but nothing to write home about. But for Martinsville, VA where good quality food is hard to come by, I can see why they're always busy (plus, they're the only BBQ joint in town, so they have a monopoly going on). Side Note: I really like their hot BBQ sauce - It's got a nice kick with a good vinegar-based bite; not a fan of their competition sauce however (the cumin completely ruins the sauce IMO). While The Checkered Pig was pretty good, I gave them 3 stars for the price (and the restaurant cleanliness - it was really dirty in there)... $95 for 4 people for lunch; that's downright ridiculous. We were in STL last month and ate at Pappy's Smoke House, which is arguably the best BBQ joint in the city and has been featured all over the Food Network, and it was only $35 w/ tip for lunch (2 people). The Checkered Pig is not even in the same stratosphere as Pappy's, and they're quite a bit more expensive... Unacceptable IMO, especially for Martinsville, VA, where the median income is well below the country average. Restaurants need to stop the customer price gouging, regardless of how bad Brandon has jacked-up the US economy. If a restaurant like Pacific Bay can charge fair and reasonable prices, so can others - Food for thought. read more

Learned about this place from the museum worker, as a local bbq favorite! I'm a Kansas City native so I know good BBQ when I taste it. This was ok. Not the best, not the worst. Food came fast, people were so nice! Unfortunately my brisket was cold, but my son said the chicken tenders were the best he's ever had! Price was reasonable for a sit down restaurant experience. The sandwich is on a plain burger bun and doesn't come with anything but the sliced meat. It's unlike any brisket I've ever had being it's thick and chunky like pork belly. The meat didn't fall apart which makes me believe it wasn't smoked for a long time or may have been cooked in an oven. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't my cup of tea. It had no seasoning and I couldn't taste any smokiness. It was a grey color and not the pink I usually see on brisket so I've concluded not everyone makes it the same and to go with the flow. Will I come back? Probably not for the brisket. For $13 a plate, I would have hoped for more than just the bun and sliced meat. It did come with a small portion of sauce. Drove by this restaurant, decided to take a chance and turned around. Oh my it was the right thing to do. The staff are friendly and attentive. The food was super. I got their smoked wings. They had a wonderful rub and a great smoke on them. The onion rings were on point. Nothing frozen, you could tell they made them themselves. My drink was refilled, didn't have to ask. The sliced pork was absolutely delicious and moist. Don't care for watery thin BBQ sauce and though I gave it a try, I found it added no help to the flavour. The potato salad was dismal in my opinion. Could have picked up mustard potato salad at Publix and done better. I was equally disappointed by the baked beans. Now, I will tell you, I love hush puppies. They should be crunchy on outside and never soggy!! These hush puppies were the worst I have had in a long time. They tasted like they've sat out a while. The four of us got here around 6:00 Saturday evening and the place was not busy and we sat right down. It was hard to understand the waitress because of her rough voice, but she was nice. She took our order and in a few minutes our food arrived. I had such a hard time cutting my ribs that she noticed and asked if I wanted a plate instead of the basket it came in. That helped, but I have never had such over-cooked ribs. The hushpuppies were like rocks and my Mac and cheese was like just out of the box. My wife's brisket was dry and tough. We were hungry for bbq Saturday and were in Martinsville for a NASCAR race. I would have given 2.5 rating if I knew how to rate half star. Reason for lower rating was the brisket. We have travel all across US and had brisket everywhere. Even though everyone has there own recipe and seasoning brisket is and should be TENDER. No need for knife. This brisket was so tuff we had hard time cutting it with a knife and then had to chew chew chew. Very disappointing. The flavor wasn't bad but it was ruined because it was prepared incorrectly. Yoooooo, this place is !!! Honestly, my friend and I had the best time here! The staff was efficient and friendly and the food was great! We got a few different things to try, our main favorites were the ribs and the bbq chopped pork. The ribs were tender and fall off the bone good! Both times we went I -had- to get their collard greens, they reminded me of my grandma's greens and were absolutely divine. The coleslaw, mac salad, and potato salad were flavored perfectly, we recommend those as well ^-^ ALSO for dessert we snagged some of their apple cobbler with ice cream, and it was phenomenal! They also make their own pork rinds (which were so kindly gifted to us, I was so excited, I mcfreakin' LOVE pork rinds, and they were perfection!). Honestly, I'd like to make my way back to Martinsville specifically to take my husband to this restaurant, we're obsessed with good BBQ and this place is it.
