I don't eat fast food very often, but when I do... Checkers is usually a go-to for me. Two main draws are those seasoned fries and their milkshakes. This location is conveniently located across from Beltway Plaza amongst many other things. They have a drive-thru, but you can also walk up to the window and order... your choice! In the summer, I do the latter, but the colder months call for the drive-thru so I don't have to stand outside. What fun is that?? As I said, it's a rare occasion... but luckily I've never found myself waiting longer than 10 minutes for my orders. I used to go way more when I regularly got coupons from them, but it's been a while. The craving still occasionally emerges though! It's been years since I went to Checkers. I used to love this place. Sadly, my most recent experience will probably be my last. The burgers were nothing like I remembered. Let me first say, the delivery experience was great. My food arrived hot, fresh, and accurate. The fries were good, albeit greasy. The grease soaked bag sitting on my porch waiting for me wasn't exactly appetizing. The soft drinks were typical. The funnel cake fries were a delicious surprise. But the burgers... My main reason for choosing Checkers that night... Highly disappointing. The burgers were way smaller than I remembered. I guess that's the climate we live in now. The was even more of a let down. What happened to the beefy burger patty I used to enjoy? My husband and I were not impressed by the lackluster taste of beef flavored fillers. This left me slightly embarrassed because earlier I hyped it up to my husband who'd never experienced Checkers before. We don't get take out much. Here's one more reason why. I was a huge Checkers/Rallys fan as a child and teenager but I think Chick-fil-A has replaced Checkers for me, and I think this location should be converted into the latter honestly. This location had gone down hill whether it is the staff, the smell after pulling into the driveway and heading up to the window, the accuracy of the orders, and to the food quality and portions themselves, it is just a lot to be desired, where I rarely if ever come here. Something just seems so dated about Checkers. Now if this was 15-20 years ago, then my opinion would be much different, but the excessive grease and poor quality over the years not just with this location but with others has Checkers punching below its weight and being phased out by better quality fast-food chains. Sure, Checkers can still get somewhat of a food crowd, but my favorite Checkers location off of H-Street and Maryland Ave. in NE DC had been replaced many years ago by Chick-fil-A, and I can see this one too, since we don't have a legit full-fledged Chick-fil-A in Greenbelt. Placed an order online for delivery. Selected a few ingredients to have left off my burger, as those are ingredients i highly despise. Upon delivery of my order, I found out that whoever made my food was either too lazy to read order, to stupid to read in general, or decided to be a burger diva with a "how dare this customer ask for a customized burger, even though we provide the option to customize. I'll show them!" Merely unwrapping the burger made me gag from the smell. Hence why I chose to remove those ingredients. The mystery is was the person inept, illiterate, or petty. My friends burger meal was almost $8.00 and my meal was $13.77. I was charged 50 cents for each ranch when I ordered wings. I asked did any come with the wings and she said no. When I was in college, I had a 92 Corolla that had Built-In Speeding Ticket Avoidance Technology - when I would hit 65mph, the car would shake like my abs when I'm holding that stupid 300-inspired plank position for a minute, which is a whole 58 seconds longer than I'd prefer to hold it. Another awesome feature of this car was that it was part car, part Arm Exercising Device, i.e., manual windows. So coming to this Checker's was a scary proposition. You see, Checker's has 2 drive thru lanes and I had to use the one on the right due to my Corolla's AED. Conveniently, this was located right by the dumpster, and since this Checker's has been around the block longer than Jenny, the stench can best be described as the offspring of Sewage and Bile's son and Dog Poop and Durian's daughter. And last time I checked, you kind of need your windows rolled down if you're gonna order from the drive thru, so I faced a dilemna every time I went to this drive thru: breathe through my nose, which allows for filtering of the sewage/bile/dog poop/durian particles but makes me wish I didn't have the sense of smell, or breathe through my mouth, which smells like nothing but results in me eating sweage/bile/dog poop/durian particles. And no. Getting my big booty out of the car and walking to order was not an option. But who's laughing now?! Now I gots me a car with power windows and I can use the left drive thru window.Baller! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Food - I for one like the Champ Burger and fries here, largely due to my youth when we would skip school to pick up 2 champ burgers and 2 small fries for $2.22. Well, from 1985-95, I boycotted going there because of having to send my food back three times one trip, so for that period I don't know. Last week (3/15/14) they got me again! When I was a teen I loved going to Giffords for ice cream. They served great dishes w/ an attitude. They took no guff but gave it freely. It was part of the show. Intentional. Sadly getting the order right here may be viewed as entertainment but it isn't meant intentionally. Through the years, everyone's been nice. I suspect the issue is high employment turnover coupled w/ inexperience. Watch the road sign. When it shows the weekly special and the words "help wanted" you can get a foreboding on your order's accuracy. Yeah, you can frequently smell the place. Last night I wanted to ask for straws for our drinks (they didnt give us any) and ketchup but after giving me my food the lady quickly closed the window and turned her back to us. This was without a doubt the worst fast food experience I have ever had. Our food took at least 15 minutes to get which made us late for our son's lacrosse game. The burger I ordered was razor thin and absolutely smothered with mayonnaise that I am pretty sure was rancid (either that or it was Miracle Whip).
