I wasn't looking for anything fancy when I did some last minute holiday shopping for the kids this past weekend. But wow, I was impressed by this toy store. The place is larger than it seems from the outside, with multiple rooms and aisles of toys and gifts for all ages. This includes blocks and wobblers for toddlers, dolls and figures, dress up and jewelry items, miniature cars and vehicles, dinosaur themed products, board games, card games, mad libs, stickers, arts and crafts, science activity sets (like Rainbow Unicorns STEAM fun project), sports items and bike accessories, and so much more. Everything well organized into different sections, and even each section thoughtfully organized too. Such as the jigsaw puzzles labeled by number of pieces and age appropriate, making it easy for customers to find what they need. The selection of games and puzzles was extraordinary, with so many unique options, I wanted to get something for myself! But I have self-control. I ended up just buying an origami plane kit for one of the kids. The stuff here is on the pricey side, and I wasn't trying to splurge. A nice local toy store for with a good selection of toys. I've been going here every few weeks for the past year to get new toys for my toddler. The prices are market value, which is fine. The problem is they don't take returns on opened items, so don't buy anything big that you could regret getting. Even if you have all the parts, the box isn't damaged, etc. The sales people there hyped up this $70 item my child seemed to love at the store and I felt obligated to buy it. But then once we brought it home, my kid tried it once and stopped playing with it. I tried bringing it back and was told a resounding "no." Now I'm stuck with a giant and expensive toy my kid doesn't want. Major buyer's remorse. Guess I will no longer be buying anything of large value here. Be extra careful if you decide to open anything you buy here!! And don't listen to the store staff if they tell you something is popular -- trust your own gut. read more

I love small toy stores and this place is one of my favorites it offers all the nostalgic toys I used to grow up with like calico critters. There are also current Melissa and Doug toys and stickers and slimes. If you don't want to spend a lot there's is a $1-$5 bargain bin in the front. Very cute shop. Shop small! read more

Several weeks ago, our family strolled at Los Altos downtown, entered this toy store, I bought a very cute buzz bee toy for my baby granddaughter. Days later, toy paints peeled off and my son called store to inquire the safety issue and return process. I really like this shop! I was clueless about what to get my sons for the holidays and came in on a weeknight at 6 pm. I was greeted and helped by a great sales associate who introduced me to a lot of excellent toys, and the wrapped them all for me to boot! My kids liked the presents they've gotten so far and I feel like if you need a birthday gift, this is a solid place to go because they really have a little bit of everything. read more

Cheeky Monkey on Main Street in downtown Los Altos has a huge selection of all sorts of toys. It is wonderful to support this small independent business. The sales people are beyond compare. Specifically, Mariah spent about 45 minutes with me in the store and my goddaughter on the phone getting an idea of what her son would like as a present. Mariah pulled various items off the shelf describing them to see if they would work for her son. I also texted some pictures of them. Mariah took painstakingly care with patience and concern to find just the right gifts. Once they were decided upon she proceeded to wrap all of them with my choice of wrapping paper. This was a favorite of the honeys during our Los Altos visit! I enjoyed the selection of items and cute Halloween costumes but I found the organization lacking a bit for me. The honey loved the selection of games and ended up purchasing one of the electric walking toys - I tried to convince him to buy a mini cowboy hat and bandana to no avail. No no no no no... I'm gonna try to keep this short. Adventure Toys & Teachers' Supplies seems all friendly and great but we were in the other night, shopping in their train section before the Festival of Lights parade, and we saw a different side. At first they were nice while they were trying to help me find the product I'd come in looking for (which they didn't have). Then, I was so surprised when they refused to let my 2.5 year old use their bathroom, when he was jumping around saying 'potty potty, momma'. Instead, they told me it was not a public restroom on that night and sent us down the street towards a porta-potty that had been set-up somewhere for the festival. NO JOKE. What 2-year old can hold their bladder?! A store that focuses on children should know this and make an allowance for a newly potty-trained child. It's not like they don't have a bathroom, they just chose to not let my lil guy use it. It could have been an unnecessarily embarrassing night for my son, had Lisa's Tea Treasures not graciously let us use their facilities. I can never thank them enough and they have a new, loyal patron. I will never spend my money at Adventure Toys now... no matter how much my son loved their trains. Won't see ya there. read more

I ran to Cheeky Monkey to get a last minute birthday gift. I was happily surprised to see that Cheeky Monkey has so many Brio trains and train sets. I thought I found the best place for children's gifts, but then waited at the check out counter for nearly 5 minutes while the girls behind the counter were chatting with with another guest (there were 3-4 employees behind the counter). I finally waved and someone helped me. I also had another issue with my checkout where one of the girls called Menlo Park to verify a coupon I had brought in (my apologies that I brought the wrong coupon in), and I didn't like how they approached the situation or how they handled it. Overall it doesn't seem like they take customer service seriously. I left with a sour taste in my mouth and probably won't go back. read more

I adore this place. My partner and I found it by complete accident wandering around in downtown Los Altos on a sunny day. I am a sucker for toys (plushies especially) and this store is packed from floor to ceiling with bright and colorful toys and plush. They also have a good selection of educational toys and materials, and I've bought a few journals from here as well. The staff is also fairly friendly; I inquired about the price of one of the large plush sitting on the top shelf and the employee happily got the ladder to check and even carried it to the register for me so I could check out. The store has a nice ambiance with plenty of natural lighting. I think you'll find a little something new each and every time you go. :) read more

This is a local toy store, I wouldn't call it small since it always seems to have everything and then some; but if you want to compare with Toys R Us, then yes it's a small intimate toy store. I come here every year before Christmas and I always get my whole list done! The staff here are all so amazing and knowledgeable. You can be at the board game aisle and the staff can tell you how all the game works (how to play). You can tell them what you are looking for and they will have a few different options for you to choose from. I needed stocking stuffers and voila, they have a list of different options for me! This toy store is equipped with unique items that you will not be able to find at the big box stores. The price, one would assume that the boutique store is more expensive, but you are wrong! Most of their items are in line with Amazon's price. Lastly, they will wrap your gift for you for free!! This is my one stop shop for my kids' Christina gifts every year!!! read more

This toy store is super well-curated and the staff are helpful and knowledgeable. I've come in many times looking for gifts for kids, and although many times I'm unsure about what I'm looking for, I always find great options here. They have stuff like raincoats that change color when they get wet, princess/dress-up dresses, sand toys, lunch bags, gifts for infants, sports stuff, little stocking stuffer type trinkets, and even a nice selection of books and workbooks. With many people trying to buy local these days to help keep our retail businesses going strong, one would think Adventure Toys would learn that it's all about the customer. It's unfortunate that a store with such potential could have such horrific service. This is a recipe for disaster. I HAD to visit Adventure Toys last week, after promising myself NEVER to go back, to find the owner (woman with short curly hair yelling at one of her employees). I felt so bad for the young woman who was getting blasted...I could see her eyes welling with what looked like a tears. As we had three bday parties to attend that weekend and had just returned from our vacation and were short on time, I wasn't able to leave without a purchase. A purchase that was nearly $175.00 was barely given a "thank you." I will be planning ahead and doing my shopping online for now on...it will be a much more pleasant experience. This visit was MY LAST. I wish them luck, but if the bad service continues....my guess is there will be many more like me boycotting her bad attitude. read more

I'm really grateful to have Adventure Toys in the neighborhood. Twice during covid, I needed a last minute gift. I called them up and gave them a description of the recipient. They went around the store and called back with possible gift ideas. Within a couple hrs, I have wrapped gifts delivered to my car. What great service! Can't get that from online and big box stores. I spent a good decade and a half growing up in a culture-starved country that loved to emulate the best of the West and its surrounding neighbors (and in many ways blatant copying and cloning), and the toy shops of yesteryear while quickly fading from memory and already out of existence, were absolutely nothing like Adventure Toys in Los Altos. Instead of going back to basics like what Adventure Toys does, the ones I grew up with overstreched one or two dimensions of the alternate and unrealistic (yet heaps of fun) imagination, and flooded the senses with imported metal. No I don't mean Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, Venom, Judas Priest, Angel Wtich, or Swedish band Cat Rapes Dog. The key word of the 80s with the coolest import toys was DIE CAST METAL Aka robots from the 70s and 80s era of Japanese animation (when it was cool and all about the science fiction, and of course, robots). I'm talking about the robots that transform (not Transformers), had cool weapons like flying ejaculatory....FISTS and missiles that shot from any imagineable orifice (robot I mean). This video clip at 3:34 might demonstrate an example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1btL1mh_nKE If it was shown on TV, dubbed for the local market and imported from Japan, it did also make its way in 3D form and prepackaged with a huge markup at the toy shop. Star Wars 5" figures were but a minor distraction. I suppose the only cool thing about these Japanese toy robots made by the likes of Takatoku or Bandai, was that they were produced in significantly less quantities back in the day, were of higher quality as a result, and were mostly abused or thrown away by their owners (the kids). Some us did roundhouse kicking to the Godzilla toy, or threw Ultraman and Astroboy out the window thinking they could fly in real life while watching gravity kick its butt. And maybe someone spray painted a Gundam model black and blue, set fire to it, to make it look like it was a war damaged robot. Now try finding one of these types of old school toys on ebay or Kimono My House in Emeryville now, they are literally worth their weight in gold if in like new condition, while grown men weep (for throwing away and physically abusing toys that are now worth a bundle). But looking back, what good did these robots do, other than re-act out what was seen on the cartoons? Same can be said with the original Kenner Star Wars figures (that are now also worth a small fortune). Heaps of fun, but oh well, a good mind is a terrible thing to waste. And here's where Adventure Toys comes in. They offer a niche of product that caters to the development of young minds, which is something that parents of today pay a lot more attention to than 20+ years ago. Rather than stretching the limits of alternate imagination, the store offer things that are a lot more grounded, like perhaps a plastic tool kit set, doctor kit, kitchen kit with plastic fruit and knife as a way of real life simulation, and of course numerous puzzles and "thinker" type toys. This might also be a great place to stock up on exploration type home based preschool learning material and toys, if you have something like that. No die cast metal robots here. read more

You will probably not find a bargain here- although there have been times I did. But...you will probably find what you're looking for and a staff that knows that they're talking about. I work near here- I work with kids. This is almost always my first stop when I'm looking for something specific. The staff almost always knows what I'm talking about and if they have it. If they don't have it they make good suggestions for alternative. The extra dollar or so I spend over the big box store is well worth the time I save and knowledge I gain. read more

Love this local toy store. It's clean, bright, and full of toy/game/craft/art items, both new/popular and classic, sporty and educational. We prefer coming here to buy gifts for friends who live locally (they're happy to do exchanges - any kid could find something they love here). They also have a newborn/infant section in the front; it is small but packed with high quality items that are great for gifts. During the pandemic closures, they were wonderful - stayed open for local delivery or contactless pick-up. We were happy to be able to get some sports equipment and art materials that brought some much-needed entertainment to my kids. I love that the staff are also really helpful: if you give them a call they will look into what they have in stock, and they've also given me really good advice about gift ideas ("what's popular now for a __-year old who's into __?") I'm not completely opposed to using that online-marketplace-that-will-go-unnamed, and we do lots of online shopping for other things... but this is one of those brick-and-mortar local stores that is crucial to keep open and where we truly enjoy browsing/buying. There's something special about kids saving up money to buy that one toy they saw, or wandering the aisles in excitement and wonder, or choosing a gift for their friend/sibling by seeing it and holding it in their hands. The staff here are truly helpful and kind, and the prices are not unreasonable. Go here! read more

HABA is a european toy maker that has great quality wooden toys. just watch out, the cloth things are made in china, but all else should be safe b/c of Euro standards Usborne is THE best book/sticker series!! they have the books and they have sticker things by Usborne. any toy you want, you can find here! i like the fact that they focus on the educational/learning aspect of toys vs just plain old toys for kids to play with. the items in this store are appropriate for all ages, from infant to teenager. there are many puzzles here, old-fashioned jigsaw puzzles as well as wooden and metallic brainteaser puzzles to work on. they also have faux baking ware, so kids can learn to bake. there is a large assortment of reading and math oriented activity books and sets to keep the young brains sharp, especially during summer vacation. during the summertime, it gets very crowded here since kids are on summer break, and they all want to play with (and sometimes buy) new toys. very friendly staff and store layout is conducive to children. read more

I went here to buy some presents for my boyfriend's nieces just a few days before Christmas. I'm not exactly rollin' in dough, but I managed to put together some really nice gifts here, I think, and the girls seem to like them! They layout isn't exactly intuitive, so I asked an employee for some gift suggestions to point me in the right direction. He ended up kind of just taking me on a tour around the store pointing out some popular products. He must have spent 10 minutes with me. It was great to have such attentive service! It seems like some of the items are really marked up while others are not. In the end, though, I walked out with two fantastic and age-appropriate coloring books, oil pastels, a wooden puzzle toy, a sticker game book, and a toy keyboard for 39 dollars. Maybe one other thing too, can't remember. So, it's not cheap, but the toys are high-quality and wonderful, the staff is knowledgeable, and it's local! read more

They wrap for free so great for harried moms who are on the way to a kid birthday with kids in tow. I've purchased several birthday presents here. My only complaint - no public restroom. This is a good place to find high-quality toys and gifts for children. There is a wide variety of merchandise ranging from small, pocket trinkets to large items such as bikes. If you are not familiar with buying gifts for kids, this is a good place to go. The clerks will happily help you out. It is expensive, although it should be noted that they carry the fancy-brand stuff that is expensive anywhere. I don't ever feel that I've gotten a "deal" here, but I am always pleased with the quality of the item that I have sunk my money into. read more
