Mmmm Sam's notoriously tasty and cheap sandwiches. You can basically get whatever combination of meats, chicken salad, tuna salad, even crab salad. You get your choice of bread, cheese, and all the fixings. All this for $3.50? Hot damn. You can even ask for extra meat and what not! They also have this Aram sandwich, which is basically a wrap, for $2.95. It's made fresh that day and is a real bargain for how big it is. It's basically a sandwich in a tortilla, and it's just as a big as a Chipotle burrito in terms of filling. These sandwiches are so simple and tasty and the people work really fast. Cheap and strangely addictive. Once you try this place you'll be going back. It's not necessarily remarkable in any way but it's reliable and portable -- sometimes that's your top priority. I had a funny run-in with the guy that runs the shop. I accidentally dropped a nickel or something in the garbage can and it turned out that the can was empty and he'd just washed it. He implored me to get my change back. "Don't worry, it's clean," he said. "Sometimes you gotta let the hard ones go," I replied. He got really upset that I would just throw money away like that. Hooray for a sandwich shop that is tastier, faster, bigger AND cheaper than the local university dining commons. I ordered a pastrami w/provolone on sour french bread - deluxe: only $3.50. I turned around to talk to a friend as I walked over to the register and the guy was already there ringing up my sandwich - it was amazing. At the DC, I'd wait at least 5 minutes for the guy to slowly put my sandwich together, put it through the slow toaster, and then slowly wrap it up, to receive an okay sandwich - and that's with no line. Got the Turkey delight for $4.75, and it was delicious (especially for the price I paid)! I had eaten 2 or 3 hours before getting the sandwich, so just half a sandwich filled me up for the next few hours. Oh and did I mention that they use real turkey and not the sliced turkey ham? I've only been here twice, and yet when I knew I was going the second time I was anticipating my delicious roast beef sandwich with everything but the onions. Yum yum yum! Their sandwiches may be smaller in length than Subway, but boy do they make up for it with flavor and quantity of ingredients! For the price, you're not getting a gourmet meal, but you are definitely getting a something quick and easy, which makes it one of my go-to places for a cheap student lunch. I'm actually not a huge fan of the crowd favorite Dutch Crunch Roll just because it tends to be TOO crunchy and hurts the roof of my mouth, though it is delicious. One of the great things about Cheese "N" Stuff though is that you can pretty much customize your sandwich in any way you see fit. I like: Turkey Delight with turkey, avocado, and cranberry sauce. It's rather juicy, but so very very tasty. Deluxe Falafel Wrap that is bigger than any other item on the menu and great if you love falafels. Paninis! They actually make very decent ones here and though pricier and smaller than the rest of the menu, they're a good choice if you want to splurge. Journey into the depths of the beast to have a sandwich from cheese 'n' stuff. It's delicious. The bread is always fresh, as are the ingredients. The staff is fast and friendly, and there is a wide variety of chips, drinks and baked goods. Updating after going there pretty much everyday for a week. Gotta five star this place, their sandwiches are on point. One of my favorite things is that (I'm pretty sure) they soak their lettuce in pickle juice. This gives their sandwiches a distinctive taste and also assures that the sandwich is never dry! Cheap, quick, and friendly service. 4.25 for a deluxe sandwich with the works and 5.25 for most of their specialty sandwiches. Great sandwiches at great prices. The anti-Subway solution that provides students with affordable, tasty options for lunch. The Dutch Crunch bread is a must try for newbies. Add sprouts and other vegetable options if you'd like or order some of the Mediterranean food options that are available daily. Everything is at least good if not great. The service is fast and friendly and it's location is close to campus. My personal favorite is the chicken pesto panini. And at $5, it's a steal. I went to Cheese N Stuff on a pretty regular basis during my Freshman year of college (regular means about once every other week when I just couldn't stomach the dorms or on-campus cafes anymore but wanted something cheap). I used to get their pastrami sandwiches or roast beef, which were all filling, delicious and insanely cheap. $3.50 for a great sized sandwich that would fill me the rest of the day. I moved to the other side of campus and try to cook most of my meals at home now. I haven't been to Cheese N Stuff in over a year, but I decided to go back just to try it and see if it was as good as I remembered. It was the same people working there as before, same line and same efficient service. I had the turkey delight on wheat, which is oven roasted turkey, lettuce, avacado and cranberry sauce. The sandwich had lots of cranberry (which I love) but the avacado was texture-less. Not slices with substance but smooth guac paste that didn't really have flavor and didn't add much to the sandwich except extra calories. The turkey was more dry than I remembered but I was starving and devoured that sandwich at a rate that's almost embarassing. Was Cheese N Stuff as good as I remembered? No. I would certainly choose it over a subway any day of the week, but I feel there are much better choices for sandwiches in the surrounding area for just a little bit more (the little deli supermarket next door to Walgreens is surprisingly very good and makes a GREAT Reuben). Granted, those are all going to be in the $6 range instead of $3.50, so I suppose Cheese N Stuff is amazing for its price point. -1 because the sandwich is still 4 stars but not 5 as I would have rated it 2 years ago. -1 because they nickle and dime you to death for sodas and chips (luckily I don't eat either of those). read more

This is my go-to place for lunch between class. Always in and out within 5-10 minutes with my wallet just a little lighter and with a large, delicious sandwich. The sandwich makers are quite fast and there's usually a line out the door but you can be out really quickly. This is one store with character, there's loads of posters with funny jokes and cal pride. The owner Sam has been in business for a long time and you can definitely see that he genuinely tries to create a rapport with the customer! The sandwiches are cheaper than anywhere else around campus and they are loaded with anything you want. Definitely suggest the vegetarian sandwich, haven't been able to find a sandwich this good anywhere around campus! There's no seating so everything has to be to-go. Overall, their food tasted like something I could make at home in between classes, but at $4.50, they deliver good value over Subway. Okay, so there's this widely known sandwich place on the corner of Bancroft & Telegraph (that can practically be found on every block in America, aka Subway)-- but why not walk a block further and enter a real sandwich deli at Cheese 'N' Stuff? I've seen this place with a huge line out the door and other times have walked right in, but either way it's fast and wonderful service. They give a great amount of meat and fresh bread that always fills my hungry student appetite. Best of all, the reasonable price makes the sandwich that much more enjoyable, knowing that walking that extra bit from campus not only supported an independent owner, but it didn't hurt my pocket any more than if I would have went to the franchised alternative. Memories of not being able to eat my Cheese 'N' Stuff sandwich while I had my braces on because the bread was too hard prevents me from giving it the 5 stars! As if having braces wasn't torture enough, I had to eat my sandwich without the bread after multiple painful tries. Ordered the hot pastrami sandwich for $4.75 with dutch crunch bread. The sandwich was absolutely delicious! Flavorful, satisfyingly salty, and nice and warm. Best sandwich shop for a college student, hands down. Sam and his crew are probably the most fun people to serve you. They all have character and enjoy joking with you when you come all too often. Normally I would of given this place 3 stars because its simply just a deli sandwich, nothing fancy about this places flavor profiles. However, three things put them in a 5 star category: 1, they are consistent in their offerings, if you've ordered a salami for instance, you can count on it being the exact same the next time and this includes the size and taste; 2, they remember me and my order when I walk in, a lost art in most cases; 3; it's literally $3.95 with tax, out the door, for a sandwich with everything! That's a crazy good price, cheaper than anywhere I've found, better by a thousand than a gross subway sandwich, and a pretty big sandwich to boot. Cheese 'N' Stuff is a nice lil sandwich shop close to the UC Berkeley campus that is perfect for grabbing a quick and affordable student lunch to go! This place is hidden away in an alleyway between campus and some of the student dormitories. It has a nice simple charm to it with friendly workers and an assortment of deli goods to choose from. I don't recall there being any seating in here so it's really only for take out. My favorite has to be the turkey delight on dutch crunch which comes with cranberry sauce and stuffing on the inside which gives it a unique Thanksgiving feel and taste to it. The best sandwich I've had in a while, and their prices are awesome. I love that their sandwiches are big but not to the point where you can't fit if in your mouth. They don't skimp on the meat and all ingredients used were primo! I had a hot pastrami, which was basically a pastrami Reuben. Meat was super tender and thinly sliced, cheese was melted, Dutch crunch was delicious and a good ratio of sauce to meat (not too much not too little). Their selection of chips is way better than your average subway with Maui Onion, jalapeño and other specialty flavors. To be honest the sandwiches were kind of dry. The portions were extremely generous; the sandwiches were overstuffed with meet. My boyfriend got the turkey delight. It was decent, especially the cranberry sauce part. I got the chicken pesto panini which was also alright but like i said both were pretty dry. I've been at Berkeley for over three years now, and Cheese N' Stuff is still my favorite sandwich stop for lunch. With it being ridiculously cheap, you could get a filling sandwich for less than 4$! The location is convenient also, as I've found it possible to stop for a quick bite to eat within a 20-minute time frame and be back on campus in time for class. Although I have read the reviews before and some people comment upon the immediate stomach pain after eating one of these sandwiches, I can say that happened to me a couple times also. However, the majority of the times have been good, and its pretty much one of the cheapest meals for broke college students that you can find in Berkeley. read more
