Today's review is for the cheese steak sandwich. A client of mine who also frequents the Sandwich Zone really put me on when he recommended the cheese steak. It is pretty damn good and everything I expect a cheese steak to be; cheesy, meaty, juicy, and rich. I can totally see why it's his favorite and I'll definitely be treating myself to one here and there. Note: There will be a small cheese pull when you open that sandwich up. A little cheese pull never hurts :)

This is a pretty good place to grab a quick bite for lunch. The people at the counter are nice and sandwiches are freshly made. Depending on the sandwich, they usually come out warm. The wait isn't too long, but it also depends on how many in-person and online orders are ahead of you. There are a bunch of options for sandwiches and a build-your-own option if that's of your liking. My go-to is always the chipotle chicken sandwich which is very tasty! The prices are reasonable and the portions are quite filling. Just be aware that there's a 3.99% credit card charge regardless of how much you spend, so try to bring cash if you're planning on coming here. Another note to add is that the UC Berkeley Perimeter Line bus stop is right in front of Sandwich Zone. If I was lucky I would just catch the bus to get to my next class after getting a sandwich.

Little hole in the wall when big delicious sammiches for dirt cheap! I paid only $5.49 for a roast beef on Dutch Crunch that looks and taste like something you get at Ike's for $15. If you're on a budget and want a solid sandwich, the Sandwich Zone is it. Happy Grubbin'!

Was feeling a hot chicken pesto sandwich, and this one was good enough. The sourdough was pleasant, the chicken was chicken, and the sauce was yummy. There's a nice upstairs seating area. It's affordable. Not much to say. It seems like the cold avocado ish sandwiches here are more popular. Maybe I'll check them out later. My mocha was pretty terrible - very watery. That's what I deserve for getting cheap coffee at a sandwich shop though, so don't let this deter you.

An acceptable place to get a sandwich. There's other stuff to buy here including drinks. Off the path of a lot of people, but you could go here anyway. The restaurant is darkly lit with limited space. read more

Best place ever. Super affordable for anyone on a budget and the owners are the sweetest people ever. I used to eat here almost every day when I was a Berkeley student. Locally owned small business and very filling sandwiches. I basically survived on this place for years due to my inability to cook lol give it a try for sure. Solid sandwich location. Good price to portion ratio. The staff slice the meat when ordered. The bread tasted fresh. It's right by the Cal campus. It has limited hours and close by 3 pm every day. They're closed on weekends. There are a few tables upstairs and two small ones in front. Definitely a quick bite to eat type place. Would not recommend large groups. They do have Wi-Fi so if you're alone it wouldn't be bad. Would come again for a sandwich read more

Not bad at all but definitely not as great as all these reviews show. It's an average sandwich place at best. I guess my expectations of a 5-star sandwich place is different than most of the folks who eat here. Or maybe it's because this is close to a high school and college campus and it was reviewed mostly by students. The staff is very nice and it's affordable. There are much better sandwich places close by but they are also more expensive. read more

Had the black bean breakfast burrito. It was perfect. I even liked the way they seared it. I had the chicken pesto sandwich before and that was so good... the pesto was good and it was basically on garlic bread. Yum. Prices are good too! read more

Had the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich. The sourdough bread wasn't very sour but nevertheless it tasted great. The avocado balanced out the spicy flavors of the sandwich. The owners were great and pleasant as usual. As usual I had the sandwich with Dirty Maui Onion chips. read more

I LOVE this mom-n-pop sandwich shop. First of all, the owners are the friendliest people, so kind and they really add a bright spot to my day when I stop in. They remember their regulars! And the sandwiches are SO good -- phat sandwiches bursting with tons of fresh crunchy veggies. All for under $10 bucks!! It's practically impossible to get lunch for under ten dollars these days, but this place is reliable for good food, plus fast and friendly service. Sandwich Zone is a hole in the wall sandwich shop a couple blocks from UC Berkeley campus. They are a family owned business serving up fresh, hot sandwiches. They have a wide arrange of sandwiches that were large and definitely tasty. The shop has two stores and great WiFi, so it is pretty good to get some studying or work done. read more

This review is for their breakfast burritos which are really delicious for just 5$! It's near the bart station and really fills me up for so cheap. They have avocado, bacon and sausage options. My vegetarian friends love them with the avocado. They have a great ratio of scrambled eggs, hasbrown, salsa, and avocado. It's fast and they make it within 5 minutes. You can even order online and just pick it up in 30 seconds on the way to class or work. read more

Good basic sandwiches. They also have a flour wrap as an option if needed. I really dont have anything negative to say about this little sandwich shop. If you're looking for a quick basix sandwich with some options, a salad or a cookie, this is your place. Nothing to spectacular or special about the options at the same time. Mom & pop shop making affordable (less than $10!) sandwiches that I like to support. However a couple things: 1. Sandwiches are pretty good. I usually get the chipotle dagwood or dagwood. They correctly put the cheese on the bottom. However, they put the tomato right above the cheese! Whaaaat? Not sure if this is the first time or if I just hadn't noticed past times. It was in this order: top - lettuce middle - meat next - tomato bottom - cheese The tomato should be with the lettuce!!!!! 2. I really hope they invest in remodeling the interior to make the place comfortable to dine in. They need to update the entire interior. Especially in light of the hotel project on the corner being built, if they want all those potential customers. I wouldn't mind a small price increase so they can make the place nice, comfortable, and modern. Currently, I always pick up the sandwich and eat it elsewhere. - Redesign the staircase/storage area so that boxes under the stairs won't be visible to everyone - Play actual music instead of the radio. Every time I come in, the radio is playing a long commercial block. Ugh and I second another reviewer's suspicion about items in the display case. You should probably stick with fresh-made sandwiches. read more

Fresh, filling portions. Somehow able to make a pretty basic sandwich taste phenomenal. Quick service. Fresh bread and produce. Best takeout sandwich that I've ever had! I submitted a large order of 700 sandwiches for a campus event and Sandwich Zone knocked it out of the park! They were able to commodate our vegan and vegetarian requests as well. The bagels feel as if someone read a description of a New York bagel and did their best to recreate it without being totally sure they'd hit the mark. Crisp crust? Dense crumb? Malty flavor? It brings its own flavor with a noticeable tang, and it is dense. You need a bagel that will hold up under the pressure of a knife while spreading the thick schmear. I love that Saul's is making bagels in house now, but I think I will look elsewhere on their menu for the real comfort foods.

My friend got a Buffalo Ranch Fried Chicken sandwich, and we decided to swap halves to try more things. I love spicy food, so if I had to choose a favorite, I'd pick my sandwich over hers, but both sandwiches were fantastic! The potato salad was good, but kind of bland for my taste. The rocky road was so yummy, and like last time, the mozzarella sticks did not disappoint. I love supporting fully vegan restaurants and will definitely go back to try more items on the menu. Maybe brunch next time I'm in the area? Not sure, but I highly recommend dropping by. Whether you're vegan or not, they have something tasty for everyone. I felt like I had to stand there forever before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Each person would be busy doing something, but there was no "I'll be with you in 2 minutes." Finally, I went one day and there were 3 workers behind the counter chatting with each other. I was the only customer and was standing around 6 feet away from them, looking right at them. They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.

The bagel ticks all the boxes. Yet, each aspect is slightly off. The crust was almost comically thick and took a serious bite to break through. (I guess the bakers got too enthusiastic with the water bath.) The crumb was tight but came off more as dry than chewy. And the malt syrup was poured with a liberal hand -- there is no subtlety to the flavor. To their credit, the cream cheese is well paired. It brings its own flavor with a noticeable tang, and it is dense. You need a bagel that will hold up under the pressure of a knife while spreading the thick schmear. I love that Saul's is making bagels in house now, but I think I will look elsewhere on their menu for the real comfort foods.

Used to live in the apartments right above, and the second floor always smelled like bacon. I guess I would give 4 stars for that alone, but I would actually go in from time to time as well. Usually my gf and I would both get breakfast bagel sandwiches, and snack on each others. Highly recommended. Having frequented most of the sandwich shops south, west, and north of the UC Berkeley campus over several decades, my three clear winners are Sandwich Zone (downtown), Stuffed Inn (northside), and Mezzo (southside). Try the Chipotle Dagwood at Sandwich Zone. read more
