Cheseboro & Palo Comado Canyon Trail & Loop has amazing views that are absolutely stunning & scenic to hike especially during spring and is easily accessible. Hills are covered with greenery & lots of yellow & purple wild flowers can be seen blooming. We can hear birds chirping & can see colorful butterflies all along the trail. Lots of mountain bikers & horseback riders can be seen. Restrooms are clean & well maintained. Had a wonderful time & a Nice Place to Hike!! read more

This open space area recently took a big hit from the Woolsey Fire. Walking north along Cheeseboro Canyon Trail is like walking through a battlefield aftermath. The recent rains have transformed the charred rolling hillsides into a vibrant green color which shows us that, with time, the trees and vegetation will eventually rebound. Sadly, the historic Morison Ranch House, once occupied by Jim Morrison and his family in 1904, is gone forever and can never be replaced. What is left is a hole in the ground, an old rusted bathtub, and scraps of metal and nails. Fortunately, a number of other ranch artifacts, such as cisterns and corrals, still remain. They are a reminders of the past where, for 150 years, this land was used by ranchers for cattle grazing. There is a large network of over 20 different, well-maintained, trails that traverse the entire open space area. Some of the trails have quirky names like Suicide Trail and Dead Cow Trail. The trailheads are hidden throughout residential neighborhoods. This is one of those sites that require multiple visits, from different locations, in order to see it all. It was interesting to learn that this open space area also serves as a wildlife corridor connecting the Santa Susana Mountains with the Santa Monica Mountain ranges. This might explain the abundance of wildlife that I witnessed when I visited. I saw a number of deer, squirrels and beautifully colored birds everywhere. There are also interesting natural landmarks. The Baleen Wall is a geologic formation located along a cliff that resembles a Baleen Whale. You can view, and smell, the pools of Sulpher Springs. The terrain is versatile to suit your needs. If you are interested in cardio then you can climb to Simi Peak. If you are looking for a causal reflective walk, then you can stroll along the canyon floor that follows the creek and just appreciate the natural surroundings. It's a complete package and definitely worth a revisit. read more

I made a stop at Cheeseboro/Palo Comado Canyon yesterday. It was nice. I made my way up a trail for a short walk. I wasn't able to stay long because the time of day and the sun was about to set. I'd love to explore more on a return visit. I love that it's dog-friendly. read more

Wow, there are miles and miles of interconnected trails here! I really like the fact that all trails are labeled and have distances. We took the relatively flat Palo Comado and then turned right to another and continued another mile or so until we decided to turn around. There seemed to be more mountain bikers than hikers but the trails are wide enough to accommodate all modes of recreational transport be it by wheel or by foot. I do wish for trash cans at the trailheads. We brought our 3 dogs and had no where to throw the poopie bags. As we observed along the trail, everyone just seems to be on the same page regarding releasing the poop back into nature from whence it came. Luckily most of the animals on the trail are polite enough to take it to the side of the road. read more

Me and my mom walked this trail on one fine, hot weekday. It was so hot, so we only walked half of the trail and then walked back since it was so hot. The scenery was very nice, and there were many people riding bicycles. There were also many horse excrements along the way. I suggest wearing nice tight long-sleeved shirts and pants, for there are many tall grass and you are going to get touched by them. Also, bring lots of water, since you will get thirsty in hot weather. I did like this trail, so it's too bad that I didn't finish it. I recommend anyone who wants to get some workout done to try this trail out. read more

This is a great hiking place for a beginner :) and I am a beginner. We took to long route (for a beginner) and walked 2-3 hours. Maybe went uphill for 20-30 minutes but the rest was either downhill and flat. I really enjoyed it, it is beutiful here. You will see people mountainbiking or riding horses. The park map shows a picnic area, but it is very very small. I will go to this place again, and will take another route, I will recommend it everyone. read more

I love these trails during the spring and the views are spectacular. The drive is beautiful too on the way up to the parking spots. Many nice houses, people riding horses, and also lots of bikers. Well, the bikers are everywhere. I once took my mountain bike and it was lots of fun. Most of the trails are wide and it doesn't feel tight even with all the hikers and bikers around. There are flat and steep trails so it's good for all level hikers and bikers. Best advice I can give is to go way before 10 am during the summer because it gets really hot on some days. When I used to go back in March and April, it was really nice and lots of big gorgeous trees with shades. Most of the land dries up during the summer though. This is a must go especially for beginner mountain bikers because it's totally doable with lots of flat land. Initially, I gave it 4 stars because there were too many horse droppings, but now I changed my mind and I think it deserves 5 stars. It's beautiful and has wide trails. Who cares about the droppings I guess, as long as you don't step on them. The horses are so beautiful when they pass by so it is allllllll worth it :) read more

Still: Mountain bikers. Many of you have crappy trail etiquette. If you come screaming around a corner, scaring the crap out of the unwary hiker who is trying to enjoy the oak woodland or the rolling hills in peace, then don't be too miffed when that same hiker laughs at you when you eat buttclods after bailing on your bike. So my friend and I signed up for a Tuesday Evening hike in Woodland Hills. We met at the post office only to find the two trail leaders. They were "hiking snobs"...really questioning our experience and giving us the look over. Then instead of "carpooling" to the trail they had us caravan and lost us at the first left. We went back home only to find ourselves needing a hike, so we walked to the Chesebro Trails which are about a 10 minute walk from our townhouse. It was exactly what I needed!! There was a moment when there were two still currents of air, a warm and cool one...nature embraced me. I couldn't believe that less than a mile away the 101 highway sat...I couldn't here a thing. The noise STOPPED and I was able to really think about things. Because we didn't start our hike until 7 pm it got pretty dark on our way back home. There wasn't anyone on the trail except us, the deer, the rabbit, and the owls, but that's also because it was like I mentioned late. I definitely will be running up here every now and then to just escape from the "noise". read more

One of my all-time favorite trails to run on. It has great trail running options from 1 mile to 20+miles (starting in Old Agoura). Only problem with this trail is that there are no major climbs until you are at least 8-9 miles in, so if you are looking for some short, climb heavy runs, this isn't the trail for you. But it is great for some medium to long steady runs with slight changes in elevation, fantastic for beginners. List of wildlife I have encountered during my runs: Coyotes Deer Rattlesnakes Billions of Squirrels Bee Hives Lots of Horses I try to run this trail at least once a month (harder to do now that I don't live near it) because it such a nice run. It is absolutely perfect for beginner hikers or trail runners. Would highly recommend! read more

If I owned a Mountain bike I'd be here everyday and not too many people come to it. On foot hikers would not enjoy this one as much as the other trails in the Thousand Oaks area. read more

For 20 years I lived across the street from Chesebro park. I grew up riding mountain bikes and horses all throughout the many trails. The trails range from beginner to advanced. If you go many many miles back you end up at China Flats. The western scene in Back To The Future 3 was shot here. In the summer it can get very hot. Make sure you bring plenty of water. read more

Chesebro Canyon is a great place for mountain biking especially for beginners. The canyon bottom is relatively flat with a dirt fire road running through it. You can hop over to Palo Verde Canyon and bike all the way up to Simi Peak if you're feeling ambitious. I used to come out here for runs after work when I was out in Agoura. I used to either loop up the east or west (easier and shorter) ridges and then drop back down into the canyon and back to the parking lot. This isn't the best place for hiking with the wide trails and the bikes nor is the terrain all that interesting. For a quick workout spot right near Agoura it is excellent even though my preference would be to drive five more minutes further and go to Malibu Creek State Park. read more

It helps that I can jog from my house to the trails and then take time to enjoy what's left of this earth before we destroy every last fucking part of it. Just the quiet, meditative inner peace radiating off of the chaparral habitat unique to Southern California, beautifully splayed out beneath a breathtaking, endless blue sky. Local species thriving in the undisturbed glory of their home. Totally sucks, don't go here. I never even got the beer I tried to order either. The waiters should wear uniforms or something. Hidden away in the hillsides of Old Agoura is a small hiking/horse trail, winding its way through nooks and crannys of hillsides connecting the Conejo Valley to the San Fernando Valley. The trails veining through Chesebro will take the venturer on a journey through lush green hillsides during the cooler seasons, and golden ones during the warmer/dryer ones. Old Oak trees surround the area, along with tall grass, wild flowers, and fluffy white clouds. An easy stroll along the main drag is nice for just looking at the beauty of nature, or narrower trails will lead to hillside climbs, over and through the valleys, connecting itself to the Victory Blvd trails. read more

Not a lot of cover from the sun, a bit dusty, but good for a morning hike before the temperatures start to climb. Make sure you bring water! I was probably 12 when I discovered this trail living in Agoura. Soon me and my mountain bike found it and have ridden it dozens of times. Only now in my elder age of 33 am I able to finish this with only stopping a couple times. But an overall flat and tame trail with an anti-climatic ending (T in the road). But at the same time, now that the valley to the east is open, there are a lot more possibilities. Bring water. read more

Mountain Bike Perspective: This place has great beginner type trails with open fire roads and not too steep in most places. There isn't much shade offered so go early. Also, if you go later in the morning (after 9am) you wind up getting tangled with hikers and horses albeit you see the latter mostly in the early morning. I had bookmarked this place because it was somewhere new and seemed awesome. I was a little let down because it wasn't that great. First of all, the address on yelp is wrong, you just need to go down the road until you see all the cars parked in a lot and if you drive into the lot and further up, there's more parking right next to the entrance of the trail. The trail itself is mostly flat lands, a few uphill battles but nothing notable. It was hot day so it was pleasant outside but as it got closer to nighttime, it became extremely cold. I wouldn't come back because it was boring - nothing too challenging and the views are nothing amazing. It is nice though to be in a more friendly, slow paced setting. read more

Ok first of all, look up the exact address on Cheseboro Road. It's Cheseboro, not Cheeseboro (but any GPS will probably fix that) and it's at the very end of a long one-lane road. Once you finally find it though, parking is free. There's two lots, one a little farther down, in case the first one is full. I like the fact that you have a lot of options on this trail. There is a bike trail, a hiking trail, and a horseback riding trail, and all three intersect at certain points. I took to the hiking trail, as quickly realized that I had a lot of options there too. The trails branch off several times and all are marked with names and distances. The only reason I didn't give a full 5 stars is that the views are less than spectacular. If you make it to the top of the hills, you can see rolling hills for miles...with nothing on them...like not even nature...just kind of barren. And from the other side you can see the city...I mean some houses...in the valley... read more

I like coming here with my boyfriend and our dog for easy hikes/walks I can do without huffing and puffing and hating life (I'm a crappy hiker). It's mostly flat which is excellent if you're needing to take it easy or just lazy like me. Downside is that it's always quite crowded and right in a neighborhood. read more

Before posting, I read many of the previous reviews. I think some reviewers think that the Cheeseboro/Palo Comado Canyons area is only one easy trail..... LOOK at your map, this is a much larger area. There are many challenging trails with a lot of vertical. This area is unspoiled and serene. You will share the trails with mountain bikes and a few horses. The horses all seem to plod along, but the mountain bikers are a different story. They are speeding down trail, and you have to watch out. Most bikers are considerate, but a few are a bit aggressive, but not in an angry way. I hike here 3-4 times a week, and thoroughly enjoy it! Nature at it's best, no concession stands, no tour busses! Only serenity and a few horse droppings... PS Bring lots of water! read more

I have been hiking this area for a while now. Great place to walk and get lost in your thoughts. Chesebro Trail goes all the way to the Valley and even to Simi Valley. Its not a very busy trail but sometimes there will be a group of people from schools running on the trail. Some of the reviews here complaining about horses. HELLOO THIS IS HORSE TRAILS. BEFORE YOU STARTED RIDING YOUR BIKE AND HIKING THIS USED TO BE HORSE TRAILS. Its surrounded by Farm and this is a huge horse community and the trails are connected to the farms so riders can use the trails. Pros, Very nice and calm. No big hills, easy and well defined trails. Sometimes you can find yourself on the trail which is nice. If you want you can take one trail all the way down to the valley and end up in Valley Circle. The birds and animals you see. Very very nice and peaceful. Cons, Mountain bikers that don't know trail etiquette. I cant stress this enough, MOUNTAIN BIKES DON'T HAVE RIGHT OF WAY. YOU HAVE TO YIELD TO HIKERS AND HORSE RIDERS AND EVERYONE NEEDS TO YIELD TO HORSE RIDERS. I was almost run over three times from bikers that come in so fast around the corners. They expect you to move for them when they ride in a pack. Then you find poor creatures run over by them. If you are new to riding trails learn the rules. They are there so you don't run over someone or scare a horse and have a major accident out in the middle of no where. I would recommend this trail for easy hiking and biking but please remember to learn the rules. If you bike learn that you are the lowest the in the totem pole here and if you hit someone its going to be your fault. So ride slower around the corners. Also bug spray.
