This could be one of the most confusing groups of reviews I've read on a restaurant. Either people love it or hate it. I went with a friend for lunch yesterday (Thursday), and after trying pretty much all of the major restaurants in the Hingham/JNorwell/Cohasset area, this restaurant was clearly at the top of my list. We were served the Wagyu Beef Sliders and the Bacon & Carmelized Onion Arancini for appetizers, and the Pulitzer Short Rib Burger and Norwell Hot Chicken Sandwich for entrees. I say that we were "served" those things because we actually ordered the Bavarian Pretzels and not the Wagyu Beef Sliders, but because the sliders were so delicious, we figured that we'll try the pretzels on the next go around. All four of our dishes were absolutely fantastic. The sliders and arancini were absolutely top-notch. I've had so many average arancini that I forgot what it's like when cooked at a high-level. It's as good as any I've had anywhere. And the Pulitzer Burger is now my favorite burger ever. Just the right amount of char on the outside with the inside a perfect medium. The chicken was moist with fantastic seasoning. The unexpected surprise were the fries. The fries here are outstanding. And they achieve something that I've never seen anywhere else: their fries are "pillowy". They are crispy on the outside, but the inside is remarkably moist and fluffy. I'd have to categorize these as steak fries, but steak fries are usually a bit denser. Service was terrific, and the decor of the place is not "dated", as another reviewer commented. The place was clearly built to give off a classic and intimate vibe. I didn't try any of the fish offerings this time, but I plan on returning and checking them out. I had brunch here for the first time last Sunday. While the atmosphere was pleasant enough, the overall decor felt a bit dated. Unfortunately, the service felt rushed and somewhat impersonal. Our waitress was responsive when she was at the table, but she tended to disappear for long periods of time. As for the food, it was honestly just average. I ordered the Eggs Benedict, and I'm sad to report it was a disappointment. The hollandaise was cold, the eggs were over-poached, the English muffin only was toasted on one side and the hash browns lacked flavor. Even the coffee I ordered with my meal arrived lukewarm. Surprisingly, the best part of the experience was the Bloody Mary I had at the start of the meal. Maybe the the food would be better during lunch or dinner service. Dropped in out of curiosity and felt like having a nice dinner for two. At first glance the dining room looked very clean and comfortable. We were seated at a table for two but we could have sat at the bar since it was early. They also have a large outdoor seating area. The service was okay, the young waitress had a nice personality but was all business, no chit chat. We started with a nice bottle of wine and the tempura cauliflower which was delicious. I noticed everyone was enjoying it too. For my entree I had the salmon, it was a nice portion served with coconut rice and broccoli. It was very tasty. My wife had the baked Cod with mashed potatoes and green beans, she said it was also tasty. We plan to return soon to try the bar because it looks like the bartenders know what they're doing and the cocktails look well made too. I believe that the true personality of a restaurant comes from eating at the bar. You're up close and personal with the staff and who doesn't like dinner and a show? My husband and I were here on an early Saturday night dinner at 5pm. Called to make an outdoor reservation just 40 minutes prior to arrival and was accommodated by a nice hostess over the phone. Large parking lot out front, outdoor seating lovely with huge umbrellas and fire pit. Went inside to see friendly hostess who sat us outside. Inside was a great atmosphere too but on the loud side w lots of patrons watching sports and there was a nice bar. Overall kind tight inside, lots of seating for that space. Our waitress was excellent. Our drinks even better! The Alright Artichoke bourbon drink was one of the better bourbon drinks I've had in a while, not a standard but more citrus flavor which was balanced so well and outstanding, I could have downed a pitcher! Husband had Papis Punch which was great too and summery. Our wagyu slider app was awesome! There were 3 so we split the 3rd in half and there were no fights over it but wow they were so good, all the ingredients and flavors came together so well. Bun was fluffy and perfect. He had the peach mozzarella salad w grilled chicken and I had the spiced cauliflower chickpea salad w grilled shrimp. Wow on both. The cauliflower salad was incredible, the cauliflower had a yellow curry flavor, fresh maple bacon chopped throughout, crunchy chickpeas and cranberries w a vinaigrette-the shrimp was grilled w light char just right, it was also one of the best salads by far for me. Usually o go for the salads w cheese but I did not miss the fact at all that there wasn't any. He thoroughly enjoyed his salad as well. As for the strawberry shortcake dessert. That was a huge miss for us. We didn't know it was served warm, which to us was odd. We were hoping for the traditional. This was not enjoyable, Not for us. We had friends visiting from New Jersey and on their last night with us we decided to go to Cheever Tavern. As we pulled into the parking lot it looked lovely with many guests dining on the pretty outside patio. We hadn't made reservations but were able to be seated indoors right away. The wait for an outside table was estimated to be 25-30 minutes. As it was muggy out we were better off indoors. Our waiter was very nice and ultimately quite efficient. However another waitperson had apparently called out sick and our poor waiter was extremely busy resulting in a bit of delay in service. But it was fine. The menu had lots of options with I'd say something for everyone. I appreciated that the beverage list included mocktails and non-alcohol wines. I opted for a non-alcohol wine and it was quite good. My husband had ice water and our friends had two different kinds of wines. We skipped the appetizers. I ordered the French dip sandwich Tom had the spicy fried chicken sandwich. One of our friends had chicken piccata and the other had a salad with halloumi and peaches. My sandwich was tasty enough but the steak although thinly sliced had gristle. The fries which were interestingly cut like potato chips were dry and bland and in need of salt. I would not order this dish again. Disappointing. Everyone else seemed to thoroughly enjoy their meals. We were seated at a high top table which was fine, but I would have preferred a regular table. All and all a good first visit. I would return, and in fact would like to while it is still good weather so we can sit outside. The outside dining seating options are compelling. This was a 3 star experience for me based on my gristly meat but a 4 star it seems for everyone else. read more

Went with some friends for a dinner out. We had a friendly waitress, and we enjoyed some delicious cocktails before dinner. Finally got the chance to try Cheever tavern and it was wonderful! We sat inside just due to the heat, but the outdoor space is lovely and I think it would be so nice in late August-September. The indoor space is cozy and there are both tables and bar seating! The Brussel sprout app was so yummy and definitely could feed 2-4 people. The ribs were delicious and perfectly cooked. I love how they make their own sauces, I really think it makes their dishes more unique! I didn't get any of their drinks but the ones at tables around looked good! We ordered the crab cakes, fried calamari n maple roasted Brussels. Both Crab cakes were good size n good n the Brussels sprouts were crisp n tasty. The fried calamari was good too. Generous portions. For entrees we had the Pulitzer burgher, bourbon steak tips, scallops w seafood risotto n beet salad. The scallops were yummy n moist perfectly cooked. Seafood risotto tasted good. When I ordered, my server assured me it would be gluten-free and that she would even let the kitchen know. Half hour after I left I knew I had been given gluten. Sat inside in the dining room, when we arrived only one other table was taken and we were surprised that we were led the the table right next to the occupied one. I asked for a different table (party of 4) and was told that I could not have the one I was next to but could have the table in the corner (which was perfect as it had two windows). When we left the three tables which I was told were not available had not been occupied. (what a surprise....) Second issue - when we went to order a flight of margaritas listed as $18.00 on the menu we were told that the flight costs $25.00. How about manually updating the menus??? Have been here 3x. 2x for dinner and once for lunch. Very nice ambience and the food is very good. The service could use some improvement, once they take your order you are left alone. Need to flag down someone for water or whatever you may need. Dishes were whipped up without any question of asking if we were done or would it be ok to take our dishes. Last time we were there ( about 6 mos previous) for dinner, they added on a charge for kitchen staff and taxed the whole bill. Did not see this charge at lunchtime. How cozy is this place?? I loved the vibes the minute I drove into the parking lot and saw the beautiful cemetery (I love cemeteries!) next to the restaurant. My husband and I came here for lunch and sat outside on the deck overlooking the cemetery. It was so calming, peaceful and relaxing. My husband ordered the Norwell chicken sandwich and I got the fish & chips. The chicken sandwich looked amazing; a giant piece of fried chicken topped with a very appealing-looking sauce. My husband inhaled the sandwich before I could ask to try a bite! My fish was fried in a very unique and very thick batter. I wasn't sure what to make of it - I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either. But what I did love were those fries!! Susan and I had a delicious late brunch at Cheever today -- mine was the West & River sandwich, Susan had the Basil Pad Thai with chicken, and we split the Caesar salad. All were perfect, and generously portioned. Teddy, who took care of us, was attentive without being intrusive, and just a delight to talk with. This is our second time. We love the ambiance, sitting outside. (The partner really loves that it is next to a cemetery.). The bartender was helpful with the drinks, but the food was a bit hit and miss this time. The Brussel sprouts had wonderful spice and flavor but they looked like an unappetizing darkened mess. The Mediterranean pizza was really a flatbread, tasteless, and light on toppings. The cauliflower however with sweet chili and ranch dressing was excellent. This is a 4.5 star review. A few weeks ago, I dropped by this place for lunch. I had a bit of trouble in finding the restaurant but finally I was able to locate it. The restaurant was situated right next to the cemetery which kind of gave a weird vibe. Fortunately, it was during the daytime. The outdoor seating was very nice and there were heated lamps and a fire pit as well. I got the smoked brisket tacos as an appetizer and the Italian pork sandwich for my entree. The tacos had smoked brisket with an apple cranberry almond slaw and barbecue sauce in a corn tortilla. It tasted really good but I preferred that the tortilla was warm. The pork sandwich was phenomenal! It had roast pork loin with broccolini, provolone cheese and roasted red peppers on a brioche bun. It was delicious and the au jus wasn't really needed. The side of truffle fries was awesome as well. The potatoes were sliced thin and were crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. For dessert, I got the chocolate fudge cake which came with whipped cream, salted caramel sauce and a side of almond joy ice cream. The cake was surprisingly good and wasn't too sweet. Service was prompt and friendly and the food was surprisingly great! The only thing that bothered me were the number of bees and flies flying around the outdoor patio. We arrived on the earlier aside, (about 4:30) and the place was busier than I'd expected but we found two seats at the bar without issue and there looked to be a good amount of open tables in the dinner room and outside seating. Servers at the bar were friendly and attentive. Food was good, prices on par with most restaurants of its type. Ordered the maple chili Brussel sprouts app which was fine but not particularly sweet or spicy, so slightly underwhelming. My wife ordered the orange salmon and when they dropped it, which was probably one of the largest portion I've ever seen out, easily 6-8oz. That being said, it was very good. Sometimes you see portions like that, especially on something like salmon and it's a red flag that it's not going to be good or fresh, that wasn't the case. I got a salad with blackened chicken which was good, pretty standard. For me, the lemon blueberry cake was the highlight of the evening, whipped lemon cream cheese frosting , need I say more? I'd definitely go back on a warmer night and sit outside, not that inside was bad, it's a lovely building but the fire pit and patio look like a must try. read more

First night, take-out only. Have seen photos of the interior, bar and exterior fire pit and patio - can't wait to get inside for the full experience. Take-out ordering was a traditional call, parking lot has signage posted with parking space numbers and the phone number. I was able to put in a future time for the food, but was initially quoted 20-30 min. I waited less than 4 minutes, and the food came out early. Had two field greens salads both with steak tips, the Norwell hot chicken, kids pasta with red sauce, kids hotdog, and kids chicken fingers. Every kid was happy so every parent was happy! Steak tips were great, loved the marinade. Norwell (Nashville) chicken was a balance of tangy and spicy. Good spin on the sandwich. But the fries... oh the fries. I could eat all the potatoes in Idaho if they were prepared like that! This is exactly what Norwell needs. Cheever has made me a believer. Quiet, scenic outdoor patio, and a menu that'll have you down with a case of FOMO: fear of misordering. Nashville hot chicken, short rib burgers (free if you've won a Pulitzer), grilled octopus, pappardelle bolognese, street corn, fish & chips, mojo steak tacos, tips, tomahawk pork chops, chowders and chicken l'orange... you'll be planning your next trip while finalizing your choice. I went togarashi crusted ahi tuna, served over cukes, watermelon radish and pickled ginger, and drizzled with a soy-lime vinaigrette. Sided by seaweed salad and cold soba noodles - it's an excellent dish that won't sit heavy when you lick clean your plate. I have had a few missteps, but they were rectified when addressed, and overall the execution is really fantastic. Kids dishes are $6-7 and right portioned. Not sure why so many spots charge $12 and serve 2lb of buttery pasta to a toddler, but Cheever's got the formula down. The true find?
