Had an amazing experience on Valentine's Day. Made a reservation two months prior, last year I wanted to go but it got booked up. The restaurant is very charming and the street with the local shops gives the same vibe. You definitely can feel like it's the past with the fireplace and wood smell. There's parking past the hotel if there's nome available on the street. Our waitress is extremely friendly and checked on us frequently. You get complementary fresh bread with butter. The tuna tartare is a must order and is a popular option, definitely request additional crispy wontons. It is fresh and packs a good flavor. The steak frites has addicting fries and the steak is cooked well. A nice touch is they give you a rose after your meal! read more

Ambiance is a bit dark but very much in the style of a classic tavern. They seemed to be well stocked with a variety of beverages. The bar area was clean. Easy street parking. Great ambiance - love sitting at the bar with the fireplace roaring. The food is impeccable- we have tried the burger, the tuna tartare and a few other dishes. Tonight had the Pork Chop and Sirloin - wow! The brussel sprouts were amazing- the whipped potatoes with roasted garlic to put in them were so good and my steak was cooked perfectly mid rare. The pork chop dish was also amazing- our only ding was the risotto needed a touch more time. Overall - another great meal here! read more

Skip their brunch! Seated at a wall table wedged between two doors. Home fries way overdone and dried out, poached egg overcooked and no yolk to mix with hash. The toast was done on some type of grill and soggy. Corned beef hash no taste and potatoes non-existent. Better go elsewhere if you want to enjoy a brunch! read more

I went to the Red Lion Inn for Thanksgiving 2025, and it was a monumental disgrace. The staff and manager were frantic, the food arrived cold and without utensils, and water glasses sat empty until guests finally got up to pour their own--only to discover the water was warm. We weren't told that desserts and other items were included in the fee, and the manager was running around frantically as if there was a state of emergency, which only underscored the chaos of the evening. The turkey dinner itself was skimpy and subpar. The stuffing, advertised as brioche, tasted absolutely flavorless and resembled nothing of holiday fare. The potatoes were watery, the turkey was dry and uninspired, and the plate included a grand total of four Brussels sprouts. For over $50 a plate, this was not a feast but a farce. Honestly, I would've been better off at a diner. For three people, the bill was over $300 and included only one drink. Walking out felt less like finishing a holiday meal and more like being swindled. It's such a beautiful space, but the owners cannot seem to get this place right. We would have liked to have a drink in the bar before dinner but unfortunately it was packed with wedding guests. This seems to be a regular occurrence there. We asked to be seated, and they put us near the bar which was not ideal as it was crowded and loud, so they agreed to move us to a quieter table. Our waitress was friendly although she seemed a bit overwhelmed. We had the delicious and fresh tomato salad and the tuna tartar which was a bit too heavy on the soy sauce. The mushroom flatbread had lots of fresh mushrooms, and cheese but the flavor was a bit off. We may give them another chance, but we wished there were a few more choices on the menu and that they would find another spot for the wedding crowds. read more

It is too bad when the food is fairly good and the venue is reasonably inviting that the entire dining experience is colored predominantly by the extreme inattentiveness of the waiter. I do not recall his name but will call him Halley, because like the namesake comet he passed by our table about once every 86 years, which is not to say that he actually stopped at the table every time he whipped by in a completely flustered state. I had to get up twice to visit the bar to get something we could have asked him to bring us but wanted to complete the dining experience before the date on my iPhone calendar cycled. Slow to serve is one thing but seeming not to give a rat's gluteus about your customer puts him in his own class. read more

What a treat! Date night! Great experience at one of the oldest restaurants in the Town of Cohasset. Wife and I decided to try the Red Lion Tavern since they advertised a new chef and a new menu plus $1 oysters special on Wednesdays starting August 28, 2024. Tried to make reservations the night before but the online reservations did not work. Decided to go anyway figuring if we were early enough as they opened, we'd get a table. As we walked in, right away we were greeted at the door by one of the (I think) manager who held the door opened for us. As we walked through the bar towards the hostess check in, we were pleasantly greeted by the staff and bartender. Checking in with the hostess with a cheerful conversation, we were escorted to a table. The restaurant maintained a colonial rustic charm as it did when we visited many years ago, BC (before children). Very clean, well lit and comfortable. Once seated, we were welcomed by Laura, our waitress for the evening. She made all the difference making the whole evening and experience perfect and excellent. She was friendly, professional, attentive, courteous and helpful. Absolutely 5 star service. Took the time to explain the menu including some of the popular, new and special items featured. Throughout the whole evening, the waitstaff and managers also checked on us. Perfect timing in bringing out our order, clearing dishes, replacing utensils and replenishing drinks. For appetizers, we ordered the Korean bbq ribs, cornbread lobster and a dozen oysters on the half shell. For entrees, wife ordered the Caesar salad with salmon and I ordered the steak tartar (it was listed on the appetizers but wanted it as my entree after devouring the other apps and 2 dozen oysters). For dessert, we shared an espresso on chocolate mousse. Delightful! All the dishes cooked and prepared perfectly. Awesome presentations and delicious. Highly recommend! Will definitely return to try the other items on the menu plus more $1 oysters. read more

I hosted a family holiday meal at the Red Lion Inn Tavern. We had 14 in the private Garden room and what a memorable experience! We started out with a round of drinks, imperative for any family gathering! They were amazing, especially my smoked old fashion. We were able to sample ALL of the appetizers, which we shared. It was hard to pick favorites but the bay scallops and crap/artichoke dip with homemade chips were mine. Then came the main dishes . Steaks, chicken , chef Rich's homemade pasta dishes, duck, fish and vegan options ,all received rave reviews. The service was handled effortlessly (we had 5 children under 5). Not only did the food take forever to come, I mean I'm talking 40 minutes for a plate of sausage and eggs, but the sausage was so unbelievably tough that I couldn't eat it. This was one of the worst meals I've ever had. I actually asked for my money back. I feel bad that I had to do this and never do, but it was that bad. I could not chew my meal. We had Tuna Crudo and Wagyu Beef Carpaccio to start, moved onto Leg of Lamb, Herb Tagliatelle, Ribeye, and Halibut for entrees, and finished the meal off with the famous ricotta donuts and white chocolate tart. Everything from appearance to flavors to portions was perfect. We've been looking for a spot in the area with high-caliber plates and this was it! If you'd like a healthy dose of mansplaining from the manager served along with your raw salmon, this is the place for you. Everything was great until we got our entrees and my salmon was raw. I quickly sent it back with my waiter and watched my friends enjoy their meals while I waited. Finally the manager came over to me to tell me they were plating my meal and then condescendingly explain to me that in restaurants that is how it's served - if I wanted it well done then I need to tell them. We've normally had very good experiences at The Red Lion Tavern, which is why I've given them 3 stars. I ordered pick up from them tonight and they told me it would take 20 minutes. I waited 15 extra minutes in the restaurant. Staff seemed overwhelmed, as it was a busy night. This is understandable. However, this is the side dish we ended up with. It cost an extra $12. It looks like they just tossed a very small handful of whatever was left and charged us Capital Grille prices for it. Disappointing. read more

Was really looking forward to trying this place under new management! Well I was wrong!! Food was mediocre but not up to par for the south shore price. Service was terrible. Mainly a two star review for management and service. Asked the server about certain gin and had no idea what their bar was stocked with, ended up ordering a wine by the glass but he also knew nothing in regards to the drink menu for the other two I was with. Dinner was okay but steak was over cooked, halibut came out cold and one person in our party ordered the kale salad and it was romaine, when asking the manager if this was the correct salad he said it is supposed to be a romaine and kale salad however the menu doesn't state that. It had no kale! The worst part was before we were finished eating the server asked if we could close out ( mind you one girl had her entire dinner in front of still) it was only 8:30 and the restaurant/bar closes at 11. When asking for the manager (again) before paying our bill, he didn't seem to care to acknowledge our concerns. We definitely won't be back unless it's for drinks at the bar on a snowy or cold night. We chose the newly reopened Red Lion Tavern for our first post-vaccination dinner out indoors since pre-COVID - and we were not disappointed whatsoever, the food and the service were absolutely top notch. Loved the crab dip and broccoli & cheese pretzel buns to start; I got the day boat scallops which were cooked perfectly and carrot speatzle was a unique but delightful accompaniment. My husband raved about his bucatini. Desserts were excellent as well. All in all, can't say enough good things about the food, ambience, and attentiveness of the service. We can't wait to go back and are so glad Red Lion Tavern has returned better than ever! read more

You'll never find me returning to the Red Lion Inn! We just stopped by at 5:00 PM on a Saturday and approached the host stand. We asked the host if we could get a table for two outside, and he immediately stated that if we didn't have a reservation we couldn't get a table. I then said we would just have a cocktail and would be quick. I would have understood if the restaurant was busy, but we were the only two there. Inside and outside empty! He wouldn't budge. Instead of being friendly he was rude and condescending. I believe that service and food go hand and hand. I don't care how good the food is, service is just as important. the employee, who was acting as the host was rude! The bartender asked why we were leaving, and I told them we didn't have a reservation. He then walked over, in our defense, to try and find out why he wouldn't give us a table. The commotion was too much for us, so we walked away. After about 1/2 hour we walked by and there were only 3 people seated outside. I hope this wasn't an act of prejudice. The fish was dried out and crumbling and the asparagus well just say they looked like they were freeze dried. :( Mentioned this to the waiter when we were given the bill and he just looked at us. As newbies in Cohasset, my husband and I walked into the RL Tavern without the benefit of having read reviews. Went there strictly on the charm of the Red Lion- where it truly oozes with history/charm. Tucking into one of the rooms with a roaring inviting fireplace, we knew that we were likely in for something special. When we saw ricotta gnudi on the menu, fiddlehead ferns and other non-run-of-the-mill dishes, we figured that the chef was well-trained, creative, and clearly James Beard quality. Sure enough - Barbara Lynch (9 Park was where my husband and I met) and Ken Oringer were his gurus and the menu and the execution confirmed his chops. Fantastic. Since then we've been there a half-dozen times, and have yet to be disappointed. Staff/service is mostly excellent as is the cocktail/wine program. We were reticent to write such positive feedback as we kinda wanted to keep this a secret, but the word will likely get out. read more
